Queer Book Recommendations
It's pride season in Wellington, New Zealand and my local library has published its second "Teen Staff Picks" zine! In that spirit, I bring you, a collection of lesser-known queer books featured in the two that have been released so far! I've narrowed the lists down to books that have 1000 or fewer reviews on Goodreads as of posting (though I actually use Storygraph personally). I haven't read most of these, they're new to me as well but looking forward to getting into them.

So, someone tweeted something complimentary about this guy鈥檚 book and this was his genius response. In the age where libraries are struggling to stay open, this douchebag decided to be the anti-Neil Gaiman.
What a jackass.

Libraries are important
My Silent Gen grandparents like to write me long emails and letters about everything going on in their lives. Today my grandma sent me an email and told me about how she negotiated for a lower internet/phone bill and got free cell service for a year, and she traded in her old cell phone (I think it was a flip phone, my grandparents didn't get a cell phone until 2013 and that was because when I was visiting, the car broke down and I had a phone that we used to call AAA) for a new one (a Samsung 14G? idk, I don't think she knows either)
ANYWAY. Grandma signed up for classes at the library so she can learn to use the phone because she's afraid of doing something that makes it not-work. She goes to the library to check out books and has taken classes there before.
SO: this is a reminder that public libraries are critically important. They're social centres, they teach important community-based classes to people (esp older people), they provide resources...I could keep going.
Libraries are so much more than just Book Castles. Support your local library. Protect it from those who seek to destroy it and the treasures stored within.
#books & libraries#public libraries#support libraries#libraries are the best#book castles#FUND ALL THE LIBRARIES#stop banning books#book bans are foolish#PROTECT LIBRARIES#libraries are cool#librarians are great#i love libraries#silent gen is pre-Boomer btw#they were born during the Depression#i've learned a lot from my Depression-era-born grandparents#it's actually really nice to exchange cards/letters with them#my grandma is always telling me ways to scrimp and save. i low-key love it but my family makes fun of me for it#joke's on them#i should start a list of all the advice my grandma has given me#her aunt taught her to always keep $1000 in cash on hand and back then that was a LOT of money#you can 100% negotiate your cable/internet bill i've done that often you just have to make a phone call#so many useful tips i have to start writing them down. next post maybe.

talking about librarians: please let's support the librarians of our towns and neighborhoods, they fight to keep information and reading accessible and free. Unfortunately, they receive very little and are constantly overworked and undervalued. I had access to extremely expensive academic books (which are rare to even find on the internet) completely free in local libraries, as well as help because I'm autistic and the librarian helped me find really cool films (i watched it for free too!). I study at university and my studies are cheaper thanks to librarians.
hey thanks for this!!! I am very lucky that I've gotten to work with a school librarian as a TA when I was in high school and she was just amazing I loved her so much. Please please please check out your local library and sign up at least to use their libby and hoopla resources (they're apps that just require a library card to get ebooks and audiobooks to use. So like think of kindle and audiophile but free)!

Libraries are so freaking cool. Yesterday the library where I work had a concert of dueling pianos. And it was free!
Next week I鈥檓 going to a local school鈥檚 STEM fair to show off some of our cool tech for kids.
But we also have cool tech for adults: a laser cutter, a 3D printer, a die-cut machine, sewing machines, even an EMP reader for those folks who want to go ghost hunting.
In short: libraries are cool & you should be using yours.

ALL of this + if you're trying to organise events, esp community outreach events, reach out to your local library! See if they do something similar that you can help with! Establish a partnership if possible! Like the post says, libraries are community hubs. Librarians have connections EVERYWHERE. And all the librarians I've ever worked with have been SO EXCITED to partner up bring programming in to the community. Our grad student flipped science fair was MASSIVELY successful because we worked with our local librarians. They gave us a (free!) venue, helped with advertising, helped with getting supplies, and most importantly: helped establish relationships with leadership at the elementary schools whose kids were the target audience. This event was only possible because of our library partners. Kids who wouldn't have otherwise had the opportunity got to meet scientists, learn about their work, and get excited about STEM. Because of our local library.

Reblogging to add that Overdrive is an insanely good app, I've used it for a long time back when I was still reading a lot of books.
Basically, if your library purchased E-book copies of books (which they tend to do these days) you can rent and read those copies through Overdrive! Plus other forms of content like audiobooks obviously. So go check if your library of choice is connected to Overdrive and if not, check if you can become a member of a library who does!
How to Ditch Amazon
Support your local libraries and the small businesses that are actually making the products you want.聽 Fuck Jeff Bezos and the systemic, universal worker abuse, gaslighting, and brutality they live off of.

My library has a bunch of things this summer with activities geared towards adults/all ages. One of which was a sketchbook challenge, you're suppose to post to fb, tw or insta or something. I've got tumblr. I've done every day, but I'm just going to post my favs. It's been fun. GO TO YOUR LIBRARY, THEY TOO MAY BE DOING COOL THINGS.
