Shift Change

CW: Food, macaron cafe, ghost behaviors, shift changes

After his boss lost a worker, the remaining cafe workers had to juggle shifts around, with Lia joining them for a few. When his other co-worker was unable to do the mornings this week, Hyunjin agreed to swap his normal nightshift and take Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday mornings. In order to prepare himself and to avoid a high volume of stares, he made sure to eat enough and get a good night’s sleep to ensure he had enough energy to maintain a more solid-looking appearance.

He was touched that Lia looked beyond his ghostly physical appearance and asked if he wanted a job at her macaron cafe. It was nice having a purpose, other than hanging out in an abandoned dorm or the university library frequently. Yet he knew people couldn’t help but stare whenever he waited on them during his regular nighttime shifts.

The ghost pocketed his phone in his apron, before walking to the door to turn the sign on the door from Closed to Open and unlocking the door. He made sure all of the lights were turned on in the cafe and he headed behind the counter.

The line at his usual place was long – almost blocking the entrance to a restaurant next door. Seunghun stared at the line and decided it was smarter to find another cafe to grab something to drink. He scrolled through Yelp and searched for local businesses that sold coffee and tea, along with desserts or baked goods. His finger scrolled past a few of the chains and he backed up when he saw a newer option with high ratings.

The listing showed a picture of a clear case with rows of neatly stacked macaron cookies in various colors. He clicked on the listing and saw it was within walking distance – a few blocks ahead, then turn right to cross the street. A quick look at the reviews made him decide on going there, as it seemed like reviews were glowing. Drinks were made quickly and tasted good, the macarons were beautiful, fresh, and delicious...

“Excuse me, are you in line?” a man asked Seunghun as he gestured to his regular cafe.

Seunghun shook his head and decided to start walking toward the macaron cafe. He pocketed his phone and walked up the street, until he reached the intersection where he needed to turn right and cross the street. He pressed the button for the crosswalk and tried to see if he could gauge a line at the new place he was trying out.

There was a little bit of a line, but it was all inside the cafe. Judging from the look of it, it seemed like it was moving quickly.

“WALK SIGN IS ON,” the robotic voice blared.

The voice made him jump slightly and the young man crossed the street quickly. He headed for the line and slipped inside the cafe.

“Good morning!” a voice called out from the counter.

He lifted his head and looked in the direction of the voice, his eyes falling on the clerk who was addressing him, while packing up someone’s order. Seunghun flashed a smile and thanked the young man, before moving through the queue.

“Good morning Hun, how are you? I think I normally see you later in the day, isn’t that right?” the older customer asked the clerk.

The young man nodded and greeted the customer as Ms. Koo. “I’m doing well, how are you? I had to trade shifts with Felix, but it’s kind of nice to change it up a little. What may I get started for you?”

Ms. Koo tapped her chin and she selected a couple of flavors, ordering enough to fill two large to-go containers. The clerk quickly assembled the carriers and plucked the cookies delicately from the display to place in the boxes. He closed them up and carried them to the register, greeting the next set of customers who came in behind Seunghun.

Realizing he was next, Seunghun stepped up to the display to take a closer look at the macaron flavors. He scanned the rows, reading each flavor tag in front of each row. Then his eyes jerked up to look at the drink menus overhead, the main reason he came here today. Pricing was pretty comparable to where he normally went, plus they had some unique drinks like sea salt foam coffee and tea. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw the clerk finish with the older customer and return to the display.

“Good morning, is this your first time with us?” the clerk asked.

Seunghun focused on the clerk and almost did a double take when he saw the young man had a pale, no that wasn’t right...sheer? Light? Well he couldn’t think of the right word to describe this guy, but he looked a little different from other clerks or really, any person he encountered. But maybe his mind was playing tricks on him and this was it’s way of saying he needed to get his drink of choice and some macarons now.

“Um hello,” he greeted the young man. “Yes it is. Am I that obvious?”

The clerk shook his head and explained that he always asked if it was someone’s first visit. He waited for Seunghun to reply and when he saw a head nod from the other male, the clerk gestured to the display and explained that the cookies were made fresh each day, they had regular flavors and some seasonal ones, and then talked about drinks.

“Are you ready to order?”

That Late Night Shift Guy (Er Ghost?)

CW: Macaron cafe, late night shifts, vampire behaviors, ghost behaviors, mention of pregnancy, mention of being high off drugs

Note: This is a part 2 to the first drabble – it isn’t necessary to read the first part, but it may help set things up.

“You know that cafe does live up to its hype,” Jennie confessed weeks later. She played with a clean napkin that she grabbed that night from the macaron cafe. It reminded her that she had something bothering her since their initial visit. “Hey, did you notice the clerk seemed a little...I don’t know? Off? Not weird, but something didn’t seem human about him. Please don’t take that as an offense – it’s just–”

“What those girls were saying?” Momo interrupted. She sighed as she cupped her chin under her hand and rested her elbow on the table. “I thought maybe they were young or for all we know, they were high on some drug, but I did see that glow they were talking about.”

Jennie nodded and she brushed a few strands out of her face. “I thought I was just tired or something, but I’m pretty sure I saw his apron through his neck. But it was late and we were the only ones in there, so...”

Momo leaned forward and she noticed the napkin that Jennie was playing with. She caught her friend’s hand and looked her in the eye.

“What do you say about doing another late night macaron run?”

“I’ll buy this time, as long as you promise not to buy out the whole case,” Jennie offered once they arrived. “How mad was Minho when he saw the charge?”

“Actually he didn’t have a chance to get upset,” Momo confessed as she closed her car door. “I kind of pushed one into his mouth and said they were amazing. We kind of fought over the rest of them, like who was going to eat chocolate or strawberry, but it was fine in the end. He might want some too, so maybe we should do two transactions this time.” She reached for the door handle and held the door open for Jennie.

“Good evening ladies, how are you?” the young man greeted them.

“Pretty good, yourself?” Jennie asked. She took note of the fact that no one else was around and thought it was better this way. If they asked the young man about his identity, it would be less embarrassing or awkward for everyone.

The young man nodded and said it was a fair day. “My colleagues said it was crazier this morning – they had to rush a last minute order for someone, but it’s been quiet during my shift.”

As the ladies approached the display, the clerk turned his head as he heard a female voice call out from the back. He excused himself for a moment and encouraged the ladies to look in the case.

The pair heard the female voice call out the name ‘Hyunjin’ and mention something about locking up the cafe once it was closing time or if they sold out of macarons. Now they had a name for the young man who they encountered twice.

“Don’t worry, I’ll do that,” Hyunjin promised as he emerged from the back. “Would you like me to drop the keys off tomorrow morning?”

“I have a spare – enjoy your days off,” the female voice replied. “Have a good night!”

“Thank you!” he called over his shoulder. He returned to the display and thanked the pair for their patience. “What may I get for you tonight?”

Jennie pointed to some of the classic flavors and said she’d take them and a decaf coffee to go. When Hyunjin looked over at Momo, Jennie spoke up and explained they were doing separate orders tonight.

Hyunjin nodded and quickly packaged up Jennie’s macarons in a box. He placed the container near the register and grabbed a to-go cup from the stack to fill it with decaf coffee. Once it was close to full, he asked if Jennie wanted room for cream and sugar. She declined and he put a lid on it, then slipped the cup into a sleeve.

Momo watched as Hyunjin rung up her friend and commented that Hyunjin must be a night owl to work this shift.

“Oh? Um kind of,” he replied. “I live not too far from here, so it works out.” He pushed Jennie’s container and cup closer to her and returned to the display to serve Momo. “And what may I get for you?”

“The strawberry, Napoleon, coffee, and rest of the salted caramel macaron,” Momo said. “I think my husband got hooked on these too. We’re going to share them when I get home.”

Hyunjin smiled and he thanked Momo for her support. “I’ll let my boss know – she started this on a whim and every bit of feedback helps.” He got to work packaging up Momo’s order and she moved to the register to pay.

Jennie removed a macaron from her container and bit into it. She chewed slowly as she watched Hyunjin work and she noticed that she could see through him – not just the neck area, but his whole body. He seemed a little more faint or pale compared to the last visit and she couldn’t help but ask, “Are you some kind of supernatural being?”

The young man paused from packing Momo’s order and he jerked his head up. Momo threw her a look and started to apologize for the abrupt question.

“It’s fine ladies,” he reassured them. He sighed and tilted his head to the side. “I’m actually a ghost. No I didn’t die in the business that was here before this shop and I’m not haunting the owner of the macaron cafe. We met a while back and she was nice enough to offer me some homemade macarons. I asked if she thought about starting a business and she asked me to work for her. I tend to take the night shifts though – you get less stares during the night.”

The pair stared at him and he busied himself with finishing Momo’s order. As he closed the box, he passed it to her and read off her total. This made Momo snap out of her trance and she quickly paid for her macarons.

“You look a little...lighter? I’m not sure what’s the right way to phrase this, but when we first came here, you weren’t quite so–”

“Whenever I’m low energy-wise, I become less visible and I can sometimes struggle to maintain that,” he explained. “Often that’s a sign I need to eat or take a break. I’ll often isolate myself at home and recharge for a bit, then I’m fine. My boss knows about my condition and that’s why I’m taking the next few days off.” He glanced over at the back and let out a soft chuckle. “Although, I think my co-workers will be glad to see me go on a break. One of them is determined to beat my record for Employee of the Month and she’s frustrated that she can’t seem to get it.”

Jennie snickered as she pictured a girl, hellbent on trying to sell as many cookies as possible, only to learn the charming, ghostly clerk was outselling her once again. “Bet she hates that you get a chance to sell the remaining cookies at the end of the day, huh?”

Hyunjin nodded and shared that Momo’s previous purchase of the whole case boosted his numbers for the friendly employee competition significantly. “Actually, that reminds me – I should ask our boss if we can consider doing some kind of loyalty program for customers like you. It would be a nice incentive since you are choosing to come here and buy local.”

Momo hummed as she picked up her container and remarked that it was a great idea. “I would be interested in something like that. Although, that might be dangerous for me and my husband’s bank account.” Her eyes fell on the clock, which showed it was a couple of minutes before closing time. “We don’t want to keep you. Thank you for being so helpful and kind.”

“Also sorry for the questions,” Jennie added. “We heard some girls guessing if you were an angel or a sparkly vampire last time and thought they were crazy.”

Hyunjin winced and rubbed the back of his neck. “Yes I remember them. I think they’d be disappointed to learn I’m taken, if you can believe it. Not another ghost, but I’ll tell you another time. It is late and I’m sure you ladies would rather enjoy your macaron, versus hearing me talk.”

Momo pointed to the rest of the case and noted that he could take some home this time. Hyunjin stared at the display and smiled softly.

“Oh...I’ll share them. I know someone who will really enjoy them.”

“Even though I’m not alive anymore, I still like to remember my birthday when it happens. I was so surprised when I saw these balloons – apparently someone asked my boss @lia-macaronshop if they could bring them in before I clocked in for my shift.
