Right Wing Online Feminism: TERF(Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminism)

SUMMARY OF RESEARCH:

We first came up with the idea of observing online feminist movements on opposite sides of the spectrum.

I choose to study the TERF movement on the right, and my partner choose the left side pro-sex movement

We set up a shared Tumblr blog to document our research.

I started my first post by defining the term TERF and I used Oxford English Dictionary as a trustworthy source to prove the term is a prevalent word in current political culture as it was added with terms like ’vaxxer’ (The NewStatesman,2022)

I found a petition from 2015 that was of TERF origins to show that TERFs existed before their more public appearance in the 2020s. The organization that started it is also no longer available to view but through the Wayback Machine, I was able to find an essay dealing with the original petitioner's manifesto. Other than that, I tried to use recent movements in the ideology and keep up to date with the recent happenings

While observing the ideologist, I managed to notice some terms constantly used by them as an identifier. I created a mini dictionary on their nomenclature and I crosschecked with proof from running TERF online accounts and a campaign run by Cambridge SU

I found the site the majority of TERF ideologists congregate and confirmed if this is true by basing on the most recent discussions on the site in the space of an hour on the board and marking every topic that: Blatantly states the term TERF, Mentions trans woman negatively, Uses common TERF speaking points( Bathrooms, Women's Sports, etc.), Discusses Gender critically

I observed how TERFs react to the support of Trans women and used awarded feminist Malala Yousouf as a case study for this and found that those who support this online ideology consider any form of supporting Trans women as a betrayal to the whole feminist movement and see it as a "threat" to women as a whole.

I used Twitter as the main landscape to keep up to date with TERF discussions in the public online world and would post on my blog the most popular discussion. TERFs would use content that has been misinterpreted to spread their ideology and I would post the actual content where the post originated from.

I tried to find out how TERFs view trans men and found that they frame Trans men to be equally oppressed by trans women like they claim women are. I used Google accurate Search I used 'Mumsnet.com' to observe the way TERF ideology views Trans Men and the majority of the post included were positive

My main goal was to observe how this ideology affects real-life legislation and found that they’re very apparent in modern politics at the moment. Such as anti-trans bills in the USA I found a website set up by trans activists that track anti-trans bills being processed in the USA. As well, TERF real-life protests were spotted in Scottish parliaments showing they're not only found in American politics ut seem to be a global Western ideology(LGBTQnation, 2022)

I wanted to make a case study on a prominent TERF and was originally going to focus on the bigger names in the ideology(e.g JK Rowling or Graham Linehan) but I decided to focus on a recently radicalized figure: A feminist artist and writer Laetitia Ky. I had reached out to them on Instagram for an interview but unfortunately, I did not get a response back.

To find how the general population is aware of TERF ideology I sent out a non-obligatory survey to my school as neutral testing grounds. In total, 28 participants responded back. There are two sections to the survey: 1st section was to grasp the demographic, what is their presence online and how aware they are of terf ideology, feminism or the LGBTQ community and the second section was an amateurish ideology test simply to gauge whether the general population would have any sympathies to TERF talking points by rating their agreement with certain phrases by rating on a scale of 1-5 whether they agree or disagree to it(5 being agreed)

I had hoped for a more diverse age demographic but none of my respondees was over the age of 24

In total, I made 13 posts (excluding my final post summarising my research) to my blog.

Sources used were mostly news articles from trustworthy companies and academic papers used to back up my post. As well, as my own primary research.
