So anyway, I’ve been doing some research on the authors and have learned A LOT! First of all, my assumptions about their ages was incorrect. They’re both only 5 years older than I am, which makes us generationally similar, but they’re Wellesley grads from that East Coast milieu, which makes them culturally a long way from my country fried experiences.

Also! I learned they’re now both Law professors! Martha Ertman has written extensively about contract law and especially its role in lgbt families. Jennifer Hertz (a hot butch, sorry not sorry) does a lot of legal work with respect to trans rights. Additionally she was top-ranked women’s rugby player and a member of the 1991 team that won the first ever women’s rugby world championship!! WHO KNEW?!?

So far neither of them has returned my emails, but we shall see. Martha doesn’t list Lesbian Queries on her publications page, let’s hope she’s not trying to hide this gem!

LGBTQ+ people who have kids with their spouse: adopt your kids. Don’t assume that marriage-related parentage statutes will protect you.

This is an issue I routinely deal with in divorces happening right now.

I recall saying this before, but it bears repeating:

There could be a billion trans people in the world and it still wouldn't be a bad thing because being trans is not a bad thing. Even if the rate of people discovering they are trans is "disproportionate" to trends from decades ago, that is not a bad thing. In fact, it's a natural consequence for there being more trans people being able to stay alive, and, overall, being able to live in a slightly more tolerant world. You'd only see that as a bad thing if you actively didn't want trans people to either live or live a life that facilitates wellness.
