Late night thoughts about fandom and shipping:

I’m really into emotionally convoluted and tragic characters, which in My Hero Academia terms unfortunately also means male characters because you couldn’t get Horikoshi to give a girl the level of characterization his male characters get to save his life. This frequently means that I’m wading hip-deep in character and ship appreciation, and then just...

Get reminded that a large proportion of the people wading through the pool with me are thirsty as fuck, and I’m not? Because I’m gay as shit and have zero interest in men? Which: Nothing wrong with that, I’d be thirsty af as well if DabiHawks was a wlw ship. It just ends up feeling like I’m walking down the stairs and miss a step on the way down because it turns out that it does, in fact, make a difference in people’s priorities and what they’re looking for when they create and consume content.

Nothing beats the level of incredulity I got from one person when they realized that ‘The Sword of Damocles is Swinging’ doesn’t have any main ships, though. Like, the sheer bafflement. That was genuinely really funny.

i came across this post just now, and i wanted to know your opinion since you write a lot of great metas and i love reading your opinions on this topic! :D

if you’re asking abt the original op’s opinions i have to laugh, bc as the most recent addition said there’s like. absolutely no chance any gay ship will be canon in a shonen jump series unless it’s between 2 super side characters and strictly implicit (rather than explicit). we may get a gay character, but they will undoubtedly be a male side character and probably turned into a spectacle for readers to point fingers at.

internal fandom politics aside, kr//bks’ bloated idolization of kr//bk is actually harmful in that it is genuinely misleading. this is why it reminds me of the dreaded kl*nce dumpsterfire--the ship’s actual canonical foundations are loose, at best there’s a vague shape of structure in place that could be expanded on but is still a ghost of potential rather than anything corporeal, but yet the ship is overbearingly popular in the fandom and ppl break their backs trying to validate it. subsequently, other slash fans not in the fandom see the popularity and mistakenly assume it must be a legit thing in canon and go experience the series. then they either have an incredibly disappointed awakening or their rose-colored glasses are so powerful they continue to be misled and fall into the rabid fandom cesspool.

this is harmful bc obviously misleading ppl abt smth that makes them so passionate--such as the fleeting rush of serotonin seeing a queer-coded or canon gay ship brings for young lgb ppl starved of representation--can lead to real disenchantment and emotional lows. but it is also Very Bad bc it’s not as simple as voltron’s scenario began, where having major gay characters was actually on the table. shonen jump is actively homophobic and regularly queerbaits by exploiting fujin and slash fans with things like merch and non-canon content (the movies, bnha smash, filler eps, ovas, ect) to get their money, while not letting their ships touch canon in any meaningful way. this has been going on as far back as dragon ball z, and as far as i can tell as a westerner, really exploded with naruto and the rise of naruto/sasuke in the late 90s/2000s.

as much as i’m sure shonen jump and all the shonen megafauna probably despise it in the most heteropatriarchal way possible, they are not stupid. they know that slash is an immensely popular fan culture both in japan and internationally (especially in the west). they know they can make money off of us. but they don’t want to actually give us what we want, because that means endorsing our weird queer interests that are obviously unfounded ravings of social pariahs. so they use merch and filler and movies and everything shy of actual canonization to string our interests along without actually listening to or indulging them. the shonen rival trope we know (born via naruto & sasuke) itself even reflects this, as they know this trope is popular among fujin and that any story containing it will garner some attention from slash communities for them to line their pockets with. their willingness to flesh out the relationships between characters like naruto and sasuke, and even include homoeroticism in canon sometimes to stoke the flames with the most milquetoast fire poker ever, is not queer-coding or endgame hinting or some peripheral acknowledgement of queerness and certainly not a romantic subplot. it’s queerbaiting, and if it’s not it’s the blatantly homophobic mindset that men can only like women and thus can’t be gay Ever, born of the rampant misogyny in shonen culture that op of the addition mentioned. this is the shitty reality of gay ships in shonen, and it doesn’t change just bc it's a ship you like.

also for the record the ship that gets the most queerbaiting in canon and canon-adjacent content is not actually kr//bk, it’s bkdk. kr//bk tends to be pretty removed from canon with its queerbaiting tactics (mostly merch and spoofs, w a few exceptions), meanwhile they used a whole ass sex metaphor for deku vs kacchan 2 in canon. so while i don’t want to undermine kr//bks being manipulated & i honestly think it’s even more slimy that they do fanservice for smth that has no foundations in the story, it is important to acknowledge the ship that is actually used to queerbait within canon. even if the queerbaiting is unfortunately kinda complicated and could have a whole essay of its own.

Hmmm I like it but I also like to head canon Shinsou actually has good fashion sense in like a gothic/punk sort of ways. It’s honestly more of a defence for Shinsou to dress nicely cause like then people would ignore him, so a fem!Shinsou would dress nicely to for the same reasons.

I also want to say we make it TodoShinDeku because imagine two sassy ladies flirting with Todoroki and the utter mess he’d become. These girls get together and then it’s ‘lock on sight’ because they both love how deadpan Todoroki is, and Izumi thinks he needs some self love.

Todoroki has no idea how he ended up where he is, with two beautiful girls on either side of him, and frankly- he’s a bit overwhelmed.

I don't have sexuality headcanons for every bnha character so if I don't name them, that just means that anything goes and I don't really "see" anything in particular

Bakugou - look either he's ace or gay. I just. Don't see him being attracted to a woman ever. I prolly over identify with how private he is as a person but hey

Deku - personally, when I first started watching, I really saw him as just an overly polite young gay man. Like, homie is easily flustered by everything and everyone and is too nice to outright turn someone down so like, everyone assumes he's straight. Now I see the bi headcanons a lil bit better although gay deku has a place in my heart 💕

Mina - bi 💙 bi 💜 bi ❤

Jirou - i feel like she, similar to Bakubabe, is a pretty private person & thus doesn't enjoy putting labels on it, but her crushing on both Kaminari & Yaoyarozu? Canon

Aoyama - this man is obviously written to be gay, so it probably doesn't need to be said, but 🌈✨🌈 -- also gonna plug iiyama here for a sec

Kaminari - I know you specifically said sexuality headcanons but something about nonbinary Kaminari warms my soul

okay so i like to think dabi was close to jin & magne bc he was the older brother for so long it felt nice to have someone else play that role towards him

tomura is autistic that’s final. his stim is the neck scratching which is bad but fellow autisms dabi and spinner stopped that eventually and helped him find better ones!

toga is super into scenecore! she made kanji bracelets for everyone in the LoV (after the training camp mess obvi) and she once saw that dabi carried his in his pocket and she got all happy

I like to think Keigo’s parents were actually sweet people but his dad committed theft so he could sell stuff and get money to keep his family afloat since they were poor and neither he or kei’s mom could get work that easy due to kei’s young age. he was in a (bad) foster home for a year after they were caught and then he was found by the commission. one of his main goals is to find his parents again and it’s one of the few reasons he hasn’t left the HPSC.

momo and kaminari are really good friends! they hang out all the time and gush over their s/os allllll the time together like the soft gays they are

rumi is really good with little kids! she loves doing school visits and letting them pet her ears and play make-believe games! she’s super dedicated to her hero work but she also wouldn’t mind settling down and being a mom.

rumi gives everyone she meets a dumb nickname. it’s her personal rule to never call anyone by their actual name. the ONE exception is kei when he’s sad. otherwise she calls him robin or pigeon.

compress had a son who passed and that’s why he’s such a dad to the younger members of the LoV and he cares abt them a lot and protects them <3

and last but not least: no one in the LoV is cishet. not in the slightest. in fact they are all trans! and in some way lgb! nice!

I have 2 types, really. I like pretty, subby boys with gorgeous eyes and fat asses, like Luke and Calum. And then my other type is toppy or verse lads who look like they might secretly be a werewolf and could definitely beat me up, like Bressie, Liam and Ashton.

5. describe the cutest date you’ve ever been on

I’ve been with my husband for so long that I can barely remember my dating life before him, but our first date was- Something. We went on a group date with his friends (several of whom hated me), and we went to a restaurant that I don’t like, and then went to see literally the worst movie I’ve ever seen in my life. It was amazing. I look back on it fondly, because the worst dates are always going to be the ones you laugh at down the line.

Night time gay, for sure. Morning is not the time for me.

13. what is a misconception you had about lgb people before you realized you were one?

Honestly, I had my first crush on a boy at 6, so I’ve pretty much always known, but I did think for a longer time than I’d like to admit that gay guys had to dye their hair bleach blond.

Letting go is going to take a long time, but it’s going to feel so much better once it happens.

27. what is a piece of advice you have for young / baby gays

Find something to do that makes you happy, no matter what it is, and make sure that you always find time for yourself to do it. Life is stressful for everyone, of course, but we definitely have it a bit harder than most people. Finding something that makes you happy, even when the world feels like it’s on fire, is what helps make it easier to get to the times when life isn’t as hard or as bad.

28. are you out? if so how did you come out

I didn’t get to come out on my own terms, honestly. My mother found some evidence that I had been seeing a boy and confronted me about it. WE had a conversation in which she told me that she wished she had had an abortion, and then got my father on the phone, even though he was living 500 miles away at the time (my parents aren’t divorced, he was just living in the place that we were moving to while my sister and I finished our school year), and that was the last time he talked to me for literally a year. It wasn’t peaceful or easy or calm. It broke me in ways that still hurt to this day. But it is a part of my story, and a piece of the history that made me who I am today. It also isn’t nearly as bad as what happens to so many people, and I’m both grateful and sorry for that.

30. what is a piece of advice for people who may not be in a safe place to express their sexuality

Safety is more important than honesty. It just is. As much as it hurts to repress yourself or lie about who you are, the day will come when you can be honest and free. But you have to get there first. You have to do whatever you can to protect yourself until your time comes. Don’t let tv shows and movies and fanfiction and books or whatever else pressure you into feeling like coming out is something that you have to do when it’s not a safe option.

I agree w/ bnha and lgbt rep, horikashi needs to be a little more respectful in writing his characters. it's kind of the same in tg where mutsuki was canonically a trans man but he ends up being a fetish for a serial killer who loves scars (and there's one scene where the ghoul rips open her shirt and makes some comment like 'oh see i knew you were a woman' (after looking at her surgery scars

while i do dislike the way horikoshi writes his women in general, and while i think he could definitely improve his trans rep and other lgb rep, he’s definitely not as bad as ishida.

i’d already stopped reading tgre before this point, but iirc ishida later retconned mutsuki being a trans man and had mutsuki be a “psycho woman” who pretended to be a man/was so mentally ill that they “believed they were a man” because they had a tragic past (i.e. mutsuki was raped.) and then they suddenly became so in love/infatuated with kaneki that they tried to kill touka (or something)

turning a legitimate good guy well-introduced trans protag/character into a ~crazy mentally ill yandere chick who was raped~ just for the sake of being edgy was a huge slap in the face. 

tldr ishida was fucking shit at writing and blatantly showed his transphobia amongst other things with how he handled mutsuki as a character. while horikoshi’s writing of trans characters is dubious at best and utterly transmisogynistic at worst, it is still far better than ishida and most other shounen mangaka.

ok but if i may get a little serious for my blog, please be careful about who you headcanon as lgbt. endeavor is a terrible person. he completely neglected his children who didn't have the quirk he wanted. after sho's quirk showed up he started training him until he puked. he also abused rei until she poured boiling water on her child. we dont even KNOW what he did to touya yet, and you want him to be lgb representation? i sure as hell don't. if you want to headcanon some bnha characters as lgbt, fine, but dont headcanon the people who abuse their families, dont headcanon the people who are going to give us bad rep, dont headcanon characters like endeavor.
