What if I just...

George drove a brilliant race; keeping his lead through all fifty-five laps without a single mistake. He knew it was yet another flawless race to add to his ever growing collection—another trophy to make room for on his shelf—but he knew it wasn’t enough. No matter how great of a race he achieved that day, his World Championship rested on the faults of his teammate. And his teammate was virtually faultless. 

George led Nico past the checkered flag, ahead by only half of a second. As the two Mercedes crossed the line, fireworks erupted above the Yas Marina Circuit, bringing them home beneath sparks of pyrotechnics. As George slowed into his cool down lap, all he could hear was the roar of his car and the raggedness of his breathing, grounded by his racing heart thudding in his ears and an evil pit of disappointment churning in his stomach. 

On his left, the identical car of his teammate met his pace and George raised a gloved hand out of his cockpit in a congratulatory thumbs up. Nico offered the same sentiment in return; and his hand was almost quivering with adrenaline. Just as Max Verstappen’s Red Bull and Sebastian Vettel’s Ferrari pulled up on either side of Nico for their own congratulations, George looked back to the road ahead to bring his car safely back to the team.

The radio in his earpiece crackled to life and his engineer spoke to him, “Amazing drive, amazing season, George. We’ll get ‘em next year.”

George pressed the button on his steering wheel to reply, keeping his answer polite and genuine and as void of the storm of emotions within him as he could manage, “Yep. Thanks, guys. The whole team…everyone at the factory…everyone watching at home. What a season. Congrats to Nico. Onto 2017.”

Hhmmm 5 things that make me happy right now are:

1. My brother and my sister in law are visiting! I usually see them once a year, since they live in another part of the country, and that time for 2024 has come. My mom has also made some incredible baked goods for their visit, which I am also enjoying LMAO. Last night my brother, who has a fancy business boy job but is also in a couple bands, one of his friends who is also in those bands, and a family friend who is a folk musician played music together. It’s been lovely so far!

2. Makin’ stuff! I got some new brushes and textures to use in Procreate, and I’ve been having a lot of fun experimenting with them. I’ve also been working on the Dimension 20 Zine Jam again this July, and it’ll be coming out soon in early August! And in between all this, I’ve been making little sketches for AU ideas with friends. I was in a funk for a while, and everything I was making felt like torture. But I’m getting back into the swing of things! Here’s one of the things I drew last night. :3

3. Speaking of D20: I finished The Unsleeping City’s second season! If anyone is unfamiliar, it’s a D&D actual play on Dropout (and some seasons are free on YouTube!) TUC is about a magical, dream-fueled secret borough of New York City and the people who can see and interact with it. I think it’s my favourite D20 series. The first season (which is up on YouTube) had some elements I didn’t love, there was some Iron Fist stuff in there. But the second season rectifies some of that, which I appreciated. Really hoping they bring the second season to YouTube, too. Both seasons have some truly incredible improv in them. Lou and Brennan going at each other as a divorced couple, Brennan’s “You know that kindness is incredibly real. And the realness of that kindness makes it hurt even more that these people are not going to lie down in bed with you to keep you warm at night for the rest of your life.” KILLS MEEEE. It’s also so stupidly funny. In season 2 they get shrunk down so they can go to a monastery inside a hot dog cart that’s run by cockroach monks. They have to fight an army of centurion ants with ballista mustard and ketchup bottles. The absurd creativity of the seasons is so good, and being helmed by Brennan Lee Mulligan who was born and raised in NYC, it does make the place sound and feel magical.

4. Just good ol art in general! For one of the zines I worked on for the jam, I was looking into a bunch of different artists for inspiration. Here’s a little list of some of the artists I looked into: David Blackwood, Mary Pratt, Alex Coleville, Bo Bartlett, Edward Hopper, Maude Lewis, and Wayne Theibaud! Some of their works:

5. Dessert! I’m circling back around to my first point lmao, but my mom made a peanut butter cream cheese pie with Oreo crust… it’s one of the best things I’ve ever tasted. I love sweet treats and if you’re a fellow sweet treat enjoyer, go get yourself a sweet treat right now. I’m gonna go get a slice of that pie now myself, I think.

1. i'm pretty sure everyone does this, read. not just fics here, but also books. yk what i mean right? like,,, books yk, harry potter, percy jackson series, rainbow rowell books. oh, try reading classics, too. c.s. lewis books (soecifically, yes. narnia.), sonnets of elizabeth barret browning, etc. oh, lang leav. yes. how can i forget her? reading improves not only your writing, your comprehension, too. your vocabulary would widen. also, don't stick with only one author. read varieties of books from different authors, compare their writing styles, and then you'd find your own style. one you're confident with.

2. don't force yourself to write, okay? if you don't have a motivation, but you have the idea, don't force it. if you really don't want to write as of the moment, then dont. i swear, you wont be satisfied with your work. it will come to you naturally, okay? <3

3. if you're going to write a long fic like 5k beyond words or series, write down the flow of the story. like what happens,,, like this.

yes, it's wob. i dont mean to shove a promo down your throat, this is just rlly an example. 😭 it's not impossible that you would get random ideas for the fic in the most random times, if you feel the urge to write that part only, go ahead. when you get to that part, you can always rewrite it, that is if you want to rewrite it. but seriously, you don't have to write it in order. like, you're still in part three, but you want to write part seven, go ahead. write part seven, put it aside until you get to that part, reread it if ever there are some parts that dont make sense, edit it. yk? tbh most of my fics are like,,,, endings first 😭

4. proofread 😭 i swear, do it. i don't do it and i regret it most of the times because there are some little details that i forgot to put, and yknow, i really believe that even the smallest details can make a big change in the whole story. so, proofread it before posting, really.

5. as long as you're happy with how your work is, you're more than just good to post your work. but ofc pls likes comments and rbs wont hurt pls dont just like, also leave comment and rb it with feedbacks, we love hearing from you. also, if you have anyone you rlly trust to read your work and critique for you, go ahead. but it's also totally fine if you're more than satisfied <3

since no one else seems into it: would you try lip/lew? its okay if that isn't your cup of tea either though

 when i first got this, i was a little uncertain because i couldnt really remember any times when the two of them interacted one-to-one (which! Im pretty sure they must do a couple of times i just have a really really terrible memory), and so since im a very musically driven person, well, this naturally kind of came about, and as a result so did these (which are all set in highschool- the setting of which ive tried to keep as vague as possible because i couldnt decide if i wanted these to be in the 80s or modern times because im hugely indecisive in nature):

When Lipton first lays eyes on Nix, he thinks he might be one of the coolest people he’s ever seen in his entire life. Lip’s new in school- in town, in fact, he and his Ma having just moved into the area not long ago- but he’s seen this kind of boy before. Wealthy and entitled, yet effortlessly charming- with a swagger about him that borders on cocky. He’s an absolute asshole, Lip’s sure of it, but there’s something about him that keeps dragging Lip’s gaze back over in his direction. He is cool, Lip will give him that.

Lip doesn’t realise it, but Lew’s noticed him too. The new kid, soft around the edges. Definitely a mama’s boy. But there’s a toughness there too, he can see it in Lip’s shoulders (which are waay more defined than a 17-18 year old’s shoulders have any right to be), the way he’s jammed his headphones all the way into his ears and shut himself off from the others around him. He’s someone Lew wants to get to know, wants to understand. He wonders idly how easy it would be to charm him, the way he’d charmed all of the others. He’s bored of his current group, anyways. Even Katherine.

He decides he’s going to make his move on the fifth day of Lip being around. Sidles up to him and leans against some nearby lockers in an attempt at staying suave. Runs his fingers through his thick dark curls a few times, thinks he’s got this in the bag. Lip’s polite, but not quite receptive enough. He’s not going to ignore Lew, but he’s met guys like him before. Knows he’s only going to be a good time until he gets bored and finds someone else. He doesn’t call him out on it, but he thinks maybe Lew gets the message, if his crestfallen “what do you MEAN you’re not swept off of your feet already?” look is anything to go by.

Lew persists nonetheless. He isn’t one to give up TOO easily. He needs to keep himself entertained, people are entertaining. Lip’s entertaining. Fuck that, he thinks, Lip’s enthralling. Lip lives in his own little world, so wrapped up in plaid shirts and Blondie and New Order that he’s almost untouchable, and Lew’s never been good at keeping his hands to himself.

There’s a party, and Lew invites Lip. Invites him because he ‘seems cool’- at least that’s what he tells his friends and Katherine. Doesn’t tell them it’s because he’s a little sure that he might actually kind of be falling for him. Mostly because that’s something he doesn’t even really like admitting to himself. Lip was never really planning on going, but his Ma tells him it might be a good idea. Helps him pick out a nicer shirt to wear, remind him that it’s okay to have fun sometimes and that she’ll be okay on her own for one damn night, and that she’ll leave a key under the doormat for him so he can come home whenever he pleases.

Katherine dumps Lew at the party. He saw it coming from miles off, and didn’t even really like her all that much, but that doesn’t make it sting any less. She leaves early with the rest of his friends, and he deals with it the best way he knows how- getting Too Drunk and making an ass out of himself. He’s not sure who’s hands are on his sides and helping him outside for some air, but he’s grateful for them. Grateful for them even moreso when they stay near by him and rub circles into his back while he throws up all over the host’s flowerbeds.

When he wakes the next day, Lew has no idea where he is. He’s never been here before, he knows that much. He hasn’t slept in a single bed in years, and he’s never been a fan of Blondie- the only poster on his wall is Bowie, tyvm. He’s never worn a plaid shirt either, though there’s a whole bunch of them strewn across the back of a chair and the tops of the wardrobe doors. Lip. This must be Lip’s house. Oh god, had they slept together? Lip didn’t seem the type, but they’d both been drunk, at least Lew assumes Lip had been drunk, he doesn’t really remember much and he’s-

“Hey,” it’s Lip, leaning against the doorframe and clutching two mugs of steaming hot coffee. “Sorry, I- I should have taken you back to yours but you weren’t making any sense and I didn’t want to leave you just out on the streets. Coffee?”

Lew can’t manage anything other than a grunt in reply, making grabby hands towards the mug in the other’s hand. Lip hands him it with a sympathetic smile. Asks if he’s okay after what happened, and Lew just kind of shrugs because not many people stick around all that much. Lip asks if it’s because he’s an asshole, which startles a laugh and “well fuck, maybe it is” out of him. His headache subsides a little when the other also begins to laugh, and he wonders briefly if the charm offensive might work a little better this time around.

“Don’t even bother,” Lip grins before Lew can even open his mouth. “You still think you can charm me after throwing up on my shoes on the way home?”

Well fuck, Lew didn’t remember that. But nevertheless, he found himself grinning in return.

“I’m going to try.”

 (this plays on my headcanons that lew was really cocky and cool when he was younger but then had to face up to realities about things and that’s how he became who he is today. Like, he was cocky in a sense that he figured he was smart enough to get by without doing much work, and he was- barely. His last exams and the end of highschool hit him really hard and so he began to study more as a result because like- man i got by on natural intelligence for a little while but once you hit A levels over here [don’t know what your equivalent is sorry!!] it’s a real shock to your system and that’s kind of how i picture him as well) (im not wording this as well as id like to be but i hope you get what i mean sort of)
