so there's a sexually implicit levihan illustration making the rounds on twitter. to my concern i recognized hansi's glasses bridge, which is the style acwnr illustrator drew them with

the illustration is currently on display in a restaurant and dated from 2014 with the signature "T. KimuRa.". people are posting about it like it's an official illustration, so i immediately got concerned about who drew this

the acwnr illustrator is named hikaru suruga, and is hilariously an ereri doujinshi artist, so despite this similarity it's not her

so i went to see whose signature that is and it's apparently takahiro kimura's, who never had anything to do with snk. not sure why he drew levihan but this whole situation of "drawing spread without context treated as official" is annoying to me

According to her Instagram, her name is Sophie. Her Tumblr page full of illustrations from as early as 2015.

It had to get 4x a reprint due to high demand. And every time a new reprint was for sale out and ready in 30-40mins the whole stock was again sold out. I myself barely got a copy for my collection. It took me 4 tries and only on the last reprint run I got one. The release is August for this last reprint sale so I don´t even have it yet.

It was high ranked in the doujin search results for ALL series, ALL Doujins. Levi Hanji was ranked 2 highest search result and this doujin especially rank 14 at that time. People in Japan went crazy to obtain one of it.

"up to interpretation" is exclusively an english speaking fandom myth because of kodansha usa, not a single japanese fan uses these words. the consensus was overwhelmingly ハンジの性別はハンジ "hansi's gender is hansi" all the way back in 2012 because of the lack of commonplace terminology to describe genderqueer people and i think adopted to this day based on how hita exhibit substitutes english pronouns with their name. because of this exact lack of precedent fanwork depicting hansi as female or male sexed but genderqueer was nonexistent and also not relevant to fans' desires; doujinshi added disclaimers for if they were depicting hansi as male or female, and there were much more "male hansi" doujinshi at the time, here are such covers, even levihan BL

and notice how they're actually depicted more or less canon accurately here, it's the same in any one of these doujinshi that depicted hansi as male. there is no making them shorter or equal height to levi, there is no hair lengthening or prettifying, no chest enlargement, no makeup or dresses. so hansi's sex (and gender, viewed as the same) may have been "up to interpretation" to japanese fans in the sense of that's literally how fanworks were made at the time; like isayama said it was "decided based on reading", some readers interpreted hansi as male and some as female. but if asked about canon these same fans despite making such fanwork would provide the answer 分からない "unknown", as in the canon never "confirmed it one way or the other". and we really have to critically examine the culture this emerged in, because of course hansi has their own body and gender identity!! there was much less of them in the story at the time so i can forgive it somewhat but in considering them as a character how can you look at this immense amount of "nobody can tell what gender they are" and depiction as "either" by a culture that only believes there are two possibilities decided by your biological sex and not understand that hansi is fundamentally nonconforming. yet all it took for this society to forget that was to see hansi with easily-discernable breasts, because the question is always "which one are you", indeterminate until proven, and the acceptable answer is never "neither".

Levihan Headcanon

I'm the last person to think of anything this cheesy but I'm feeling shitty about the end of Attack on Titan coming soon and my brain spat out this crap. Sorry, I am complete and utter trash. I normally hate it when people change characters from how they appear in canon but I can't help being a hypocrit. Ah, kill me.

I think Levi and Hange are both romantically inept people and, if they were in a relationship, would be content to live together without going down the route of marriage etc for tradition's sake. Neither of them are conventional, so their relationship wouldn't be either.

Saying this, I read a beautiful doujinshi (posted to Tumblr here) which tells the story of Levi's failed attempts to convince Hange for some form of commitment. Hange is constantly away travelling and Levi feels that their long-term relationship isn't moving forward as it should be. Eventually, after a minor ordeal, she decides she's ready and poses the question to Levi. What I can't stop thinking about is:

Hange being the one to propose

Levi taking Miche and Erwin out for a drink (which he never instigates). They assume he's asking them to be groomsmen but he actually needs consoling/advice after Hange's first rejection.

And (biggest piece of trash) - once it's finally happened, Levi goes out and chooses a ring simply because he wants Hange to have it. Nothing to do with tradition, no stone, just something that has symbolic meaning for the both of them (and she was never expecting it because neither are into traditions like this)

I died about 5 times thinking all of this up. I'mma see myself out.
