Unwind by Neal Shusterman is criminally underrated, and rereading it again now as an adult just makes me mad... but also, smh, I had a favorite character type since I was a kid, and it has always been the brainwashed wealthy child.

It’s a very rare thing that a clapper doesn’t clap, because by the time one gets to the stage of being willing to make one’s own blood explosive enough to take out a whole building, that soul is far beyond the point of no return.
There had still been a spark of light in Levi Jedediah Calder, however. Enough to ignite a powerful change of heart.
The clapper who didn’t clap.

Unwind Challenge Day 2
DAY 2: Your favorite character
Without a doubt, Levi Jedediah Calder is my favorite character. Even though Hayden is a close second. When I first read Lev's character, I totally hated him. He was such a smug little self-righteous prick. And I kind of wanted Conner to deck him, especially in that whole scene where they first escape from the traffic accident. But I love how he changed throughout the book. I love that he realized that he doesn't have to be like his family to be a Christian or to believe in God. I love that he accepted life's adventures. Even though all the kids are trying to survive, Lev was the only one who seemed to kind of go on his own odyssey. Seeing him with CyFi was great because we saw that he wasn't afraid to get his hands dirty to survive and he even went further than CyFi expected sometimes. I always remember how it was when he finally left Cy. He just realized that part of his journey was over and it was time for him to go on in a new direction. And that fact that he just went so far as to actually become a clapper kind of blew my mind. But through it all he still showed that he was very smart. Because even though he ultimately didn't detonate, the clappers' plans depended greatly on Lev pretending that he was still the innocent evangelical boy that we meet in the beginning of the story, even though sometimes he let on that he wasn't (like when he corrected the Happy Jack priest about the bible verse when they were in the forest). So basically, he went from being my least favorite to my favorite.

He runs away, feeling more helpless than a storked baby. He doesn't know who to blame for this: Pastor Dan for cutting him loose? Himself for betraying the only two kids willing to help him? Or should he blame God for allowing his life to reach this bitter moment? You can be anyone you want to be now, Pastor Dan had said. But right now, Lev feels like no one.
This is the true meaning of alone: Levi Jedediah Calder suddenly realizing he no longer exists.
