Aziraphale, forever misunderstood
In light of a month passing since the release of Good Omens 2, I’d like to speak on something I find quite alarming.
*spolier warning*
When it comes to Crowley and Aziraphale’s final confrontation, sort of speak, at the end of season two, I feel that the sheer amount of hatred being levied against one of them is particularly unjustified.
That being our resident fluffy angel, Aziraphale.
Now this isn’t to say that Crowley is the one who deserves more criticism, but that people need to put forth the same effort in understanding Aziraphale’s character as they so effortlessly do with Crowley’s.
Just because Crowley is an angsty bad boy dressed in black, and Aziraphale is a well meaning white wearing goody two shoes, doesn’t mean he is devoid of his share of trauma.
In fact, they reason for that plastered smile on Azi’s face at the end of this season, is the direct result of the millions of years of heavens brainwashing at work.
Just as Crowley was different from the other angels so is Aziraphale.
Aziraphale’s love for humanity is very unlike that of your typical angel.
Heaven, god, the other angels all “love” humanity at arm’s length, in a very cold and calculated manner. Just as sterile as the empty white halls they reside in.
Whereas Aziraphale’s love for humanity is much deeper, it is in the records he hums to, the tea he savors, the books he collects, and in the sincerity of the bonds he forms with the people around him.
He isn’t looking down on these comparatively small creatures from his ivory tower in the sky. Aziraphale is right there with humanity side by side.
But the struggle is still there. The struggle to separate himself from the humans he adores, to step back from the side of humanity and “love” them the way he’s “meant” to. The way the almighty wishes him to.
Through his time with Crowley, this battle waging in the back of his mind has grown steadily louder just as another catastrophic feeling has, alongside it. A great suppressed longing that, if let loose, would destroy everything Aziraphale has come to know.
So instead of, “ I love you” we get, “ I need you” and the ever disheartening, “ I forgive you”. After all, the will of the almighty is ineffable. He mustn’t question the will of God, even at the expense of his own love.

2019 in books
So. Hi.
I’ve been thinking about doing something like this for a while, now that I started reading a lot again (commuting to and from work takes up 1.5 to 2 hours every day and books are the only saving grace of spending all that time on trains). I decided to make a post every time I finish a book and write a tiny bit about how I felt about it and what I look forward to reading from the same author and so on.
The first book I began and finished in 2019 is Cash Plays by Cordelia Kingsbridge - and I fully intend on blaming @thefirstmrshummel for getting me obsessed with these books by talking so well of the series and author in her posts.
Language: English
I. Am. Obsessed.
I can’t wait to start One-Eyed Royals and see where the story goes and how long it takes Levi and Dominic to get back together.
I’ll admit I shamelessly spoiled myself by a) reading the blurb for OER despite the big giant spolier alert at the beginning, so I knew that Levi and Dominic would break up in this, and b) reading the reviews for the 5th installment to know whether Dominic managed to break out of his relapse in gambling and manage to get back with Levi. So. I know a couple of plot points for OER. But! That never stopped me enjoying a book, so no worries.
I loved a lot of things about CP.
First of all, even though it is the thing that most upsets me in the plot, even more than the creepy serial killer tableaux/messages, I really like that way Dominic’s gambling addiction is written in his POV. It’s very easy to be alternately hopeful that he’ll bounce back at the beginning of the fall and in total despair one chapter later because of the way he’s shown casually gambling at work. At work! I think it really communicates well the way he gets so completely absorbed by the gambling that one moment he’s deep in his investigative work and the next he’s completely focused on the cards in his hands/sport stats on the phone/the difference of gambling online as opposed to in casinos - and makes it feel so casual that he’s gambling away his life. And of course every time he realizes he’s lost time or neglected Rebel or his family or disappointed Levi (in his mind) it’s absolutely crushing. So, what I mean is, I love the way it’s written and completely despise this plot point. Um, well done?
Also the way he started justifying gambling to mix with the crowd at the underground casinos was completely devastating to read.
I somehow feel more grounded when I read Levi’s POV - and I don’t mean just in this book, but in the previous two, as well. It’s like riding in a car and knowing that the driver knows the way or, if they get lost, will act rationally and find a way to get back on track. Not that Levi’s all that rational, sometimes, but he still gives me the feeling that I won’t be emotionally compromised when I read his side of the story. Which might be a bit of a paradox, seeing as he’s deeply affected by the events of the plot and the killer clearly is someone close to him (boy, will it be heartbreakig when their identity is revealed).
One of the things I love about this series is the continuity and the way relationships are built and deepened across various books. I get this feeling more in Levi’s POV than in Dominic’s because of the procedural show vibe you can’t help but feel when you read his scenes in the bullpen or during interrogation/crime scenes. Every little side character that’s introduced managed to have a bit of development and is not just abandoned in the corner - I especially like the feeling that Leila and Rohan, despite their limited ‘screen time’ will get a chance to show more of themselves and be actively involved in the plot. That’s one of the things that procedural shows tend to fail at - the forensics expert only appears for half a scene and is then set aside for the next two episodes, the blooming romance between characters A and B remains in stasis for 3 seasons without any resolution in sight, things like that - whereas I really appreciate the care that the author is taking in showing the personal sides (both good and bad) of the minor characters throughout the books. It makes them feel as alive and realistic as the main characters.
Rebel had better survive the whole series unscathed. And have lots of chicken.
I thoroughly enjoyed the way both Dominic’s and Levi’s families are introduced and loved their scenes.
I love Silvia to pieces both for the way she tried to feed waffles to Levi and for how she calmly listened to Dominic when he explained the dangers he and Levi were in because of the SOS - that was interesting, actually, and gave me the impression that a) Dominic knew she’d be unfazed by the description of the murders and threats given up to that point by the killer, and b) there has to be a valid reason for that. It feels like there is something that happened in her past that would make her such a trustworthy confidante for Dominic. La nonna ha le palle quadrate.
Levi’s family are a joy! :D I especially liked the way Nancy calls Levi bubbeleh and refuses to refer to any of his boyfriends by their given name unless they are his soulmate. Which Dominic is. AAAAAAH!! I LOVE HER. Also, the totally embarassing way she and her husband deal with each other is so endearing.
What else? Hmm, I do have a suspect for the killer, which hasn’t changed since book 1, even though every time some little new clue comes up I have a second of “Might it be [character]?” But not knowing is the best part of these books, so I’m happy to find out when the time comes.
I hope I get to see more of Carlos and Jasmine in the next couple of books - it feels like they’ve been set a bit aside, now that the SOS and investigative work in general is such a consuming part of Dominic’s plot. The sheer amount of time spent with Levi in some sort of investigation setting with Martine and other police force-related characters makes it feel like characters in the know got a bit more of focus than ‘the civilians’ in the personal/relationship side of the story. Which makes sense, but I’d still like to see Carlos and Jasmine interact more with Dominic.
So.. is the cute tech boy with a crush on Dominic appearing again or..? His scene was so adorable.
Rohan’s reaction to meeting Dominic for the first time gave me the giggles for five minutes, as did Leila’s ‘who wouldn’t?’ comment when Levi complained to her about Rohan offering himself on a platter. Pity he had that you-could-have-me-instead moment in the diner with Dominic.. and that Dominic was a complete jerk to him when he felt threatened about his gambling. Was that an insight based on his profiler abilities? I can’t think of any other way he’d know. Anyway, I still kinda like him, I hope he gets a good subplot for himself with the cute tech boy mayhaps?
I’m a shipper at heart, you can’t stop me!
Hmm, what else can I say? I like the way the settings are described, they have a good balance of descriptions to give a sense of the environment without being too detailed.
I cry every time Levi ruins one of his suits with blood/other substances. I like imagining him in perfect suits, so sue me!
I’m very relieved nobody in this series is saddled with the name ‘Rocco’. *shudders*
Now excuse me while I go and pretend I’m not dying to start OER right this very moment. ^__^
