Target #0001 | Charles Vane
Chapter 5: ~A Private Matter~
For Chapter 4: ~Change The Future~ click here.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
She smiled and took his hand which he kissed like he did back on the jetty. "When do we start?"
"Today."
~~~
A new woman walking side by side with the most fearless captain in Nassau definitely caught people's attention, but she couldn't care less. At least her once blue hair couldn't give her away anymore. She honestly had never thought so far back people were already coloring their hair, but she thought wrong as Vane had helped her use different plant extracts to cover up her genetic white/blue color. There wasn't much option yet so all she could pull off was black, but it looked cute and subtle so she went with it.
Besides changing her hair to black, he had also let Anne cut it to a more wild wolf-cut style so the uneven parts were out before changing her clothes to more practical ones for work as well.
She was currently wearing simple black leather pants and a white blouse on top of it tucked into her small corset since a dress wasn't helpful in a fight and he was expecting to get into a lot of them before anyone would believe them. People for sure would see the news as a threat rather than take it as advice and help.
"So what now?" She looked up at the tall man and he looked back at her as they walked over the hot sand into Nassau's alleys.
"We try to make the people believe us." He smirked a bit, leading the woman to the tavern with him.
"How are we supposed to do that?" She walked inside while the captain held the door open for her, scanning the place carefully.
"Find Flint." He growled lowly, his face changing to a more grumpy expression and she nodded a bit. She didn't wanna push it any further cause it was clear he still held some hatred towards the red-haired man. Thankfully he did know it was necessary to get him involved for the future of Nassau and so that's why he mentioned Flint.
"What do you need me for?" Another deep voice growled in response from behind the two and Levana slowly turned her head to the side.
"A private matter." Vane narrowed his eyes, moving his head to the side too so he could side-eye both men behind them.
"You think I'm going to talk to you in private again after the last time you screwed us over?" Flint hissed coldly, but Gates cut the man off before he could go on bitching any longer to the other captain. Gates' attention was more so focused on the woman next to Vane. She had changed her hair, yes, but he was trained in recognising faces. He was a quartermaster after all, he was supposed to remember who was on their crew and what their names were.
"Miss Blue?" The bald man spoke up, recognising the soft, but also yet sharp, facial features the woman had.
"I think you have the wrong woman in mind." She reacted casually, but her accent gave it away.
"No, it's unquestionably you. Didn't I tell you I was planning on making an arrangement and you would be safe, ma'am? Didn't I tell you not to do anything stupid while I was gone too?" He crossed his arms, kinda disappointed yet another young woman fell into Vane's arms even though that wasn't the case at all.
"Yes, but I found myself better protection. It was necessary." She plainly explained and crossed her arms too.
"Necessary for what? You're walking around with the most dangerous captain on this island-...."
"Exactly." She interrupted Gates and he watched her in shock. Where was her sweet attitude? "I'm not safe and I need protection from someone that is feared, someone people can't get close to. That way people won't question me and that's one of the reasons why we need to discuss some things in private." She shrugged and watched down on the two pirates, back straightened hoping they would take her seriously.
If they weren't up to talking to the captain, she had to make sure to get them curious enough to be willing to talk to her instead.
"What is possibly so urgent a foreign woman has to find protection from a man like him? No one knows you, you aren't in any danger and you surely won't have my protection anymore. Now get out of my way." The red-bearded man scoffed and shook his head, walking past the two to find Eleanor. He wasn't going to accept the arrangement Gates proposed to someone who was 'fucking' around with his rival.
"Levana.... what's going on?" Gates stepped closer to the woman, noticing the concern behind her attitude and wanting to hear her out despite his captain's reaction. Flint was only busy with himself, but Gates could poke through every attitude to figure out what was really going on with someone.
"The end of piracy." She whispered, appreciating that at least he wanted to listen to her.
"The end of piracy? How do you know that, dear?"
"I think Captain Vane here can explain it better than I can since he's no stranger, but either way we can only do so in private. People will bring chaos if they hear and we can't afford that in these times right now." She sighed, watching her feet for a second. "They need to hear it from a beloved or feared pirate captain when the time is right, and I'm no such thing."
Vane listened to the woman's calm voice, snatching a rum bottle from the bar he could drink from as he leaned against it. Even though he knew about what was about to come, even he had trouble settling with the idea of some civilized douchebag coming to take his home.
"I perhaps can persuade Captain Flint into participating in the meeting, but I think it would be a better idea to try and gather more captains to do so."
"Captains like who?" Vane furrowed his brows, swinging around with the bottle before taking another sip. "They're all too stupid to even understand the importance of Nassau's ford and defending the island."
"Edward Teach."

Once Upon a Dream
TLC // Sleeping Beauty AU
Princess Winter has been cursed the moment her father rejected the advances of the evil fairy Levana, destined to die on her seventeenth birthday when the third scar marks her face.
To protect her, Winter is raised away from court by three kind fairies, unaware of her royal lineage. Surrounded by her godmothers and her childhood companion Jacin, Winter grows up to be the fairest of them all.
But on her seventeenth birthday, the curse strikes and all seems lost. There’s only one hope: Armed and aided by the three fairies, Jacin sets out to defeat Levana and break the spell - but will courage and love be enough against the dark powers of Levana?

Who do you use for your references for lunar chronicles characters? Thanks 🤍
hmm to be honest i dont have all 9 main character references yet, bc im so particular about how i imagine them to look,, so far i have everyone apart from kai and wolf😭 i havent seen someone that looks how i imagine them on my pinterest yet :( but as for the others, i think ive posted a lot of them before but this is who i have so far :
oh also some of these characters have tweaks i make to the references when i draw them
cinder:
tweaks: metal limbs, bangs, lighter brown hair, bangs, more tan
scarlet:
tweaks: cut off pinkie finger if im drawing her post book 4 (if i remember loll) , fuller cheeks, hair more curly, eyebrow slit because its fun idc that its not canon😩
cress:
tweaks: freckles in the rare occasion that i remember, wavy hair, tan if im drawing her after she leaves the satellite, looooong tangled hair if shes still on the sattelite
winter :
i dont have an exact winter match so i use these two and kinda merge them
tweaks: 3 face scars, very curly hair
iko:
tweaks: blue eyebrows and braids, colour changing eyes depending on vibes ig, i tend to default to gold
kai:
STILL PENDING😓 i imagine him to look like that one laura hollingsworth drawing of him but i havent find an irl person that looks similar enough to him yet :(
thorne:
tweaks: metal fingers if its post winter, darker brown hair, stubble if he's in prison or in the desert ^ honestly this one is all in theory, i dont even remember the last time i drew him loll
wolf:
ALSO STILL PENDING😓😓😓😓😓 its kinda difficult with him bc i have to figure out his usual design and his post- wolf surgery look😩 hes so so so hard to draw
jacin:
tweaks : literally none, this is the most jacin looking person ive ever seen
lollll actually this has made me realise how unoften i draw most of these characters😭
bonus because i have more references for people who arent in the main 9
evret:
tweaks: nothing major, i think that in fairest his hair is described as coily so theres that
torin:
tweaks: torins like in his 50s or 60s,,, so older looking, some grey hairs
i had ones for sybil and aimery but upon rethinking, i actually dont think they look like the references i picked out so i'll leave them off here
#i have far too many thoughts about hypothetical character designs for someone who posts only once in a blue moon#im actually soooo stressed trying to find references for wolf and levana specifically#wolf because hes the one person who i dont have a clear mental image for#i think maybe how eerna draws him is how i would imagine him the most?#and levana bc her descriptions are so contradictory#shes simultaneiously supposed to look like winters mum. a south asian woman. while also being white (in appearance) ... like ?????#how does one draw her..#asks#anon#thanks for the ask this was really fun#tlc#the lunar chronicles#cba to tag all the characters over here#mine

How would you describe the face shapes and facial features of The Lunar Chronicles girls? (Since you draw them so beautifully, I wanna know how you figured out what features to give them based off the info the books give us. Plus I began to imagine cinder's face looking exactly like your art).
Also what undertones do you give them (you don't gotta be specific, just list whether they're cool or warm). oh! You can info-dump if you want. I find it really helpful.
Yayyy thanks for the compliments and for asking this, I love talking about why I draw faces the way I do!! :D
Ok so first off here's an explanation of my general book character design process which I will base these descriptions on. For TLC specifically the canon descriptions are based not only on the books, but also this guide from MM's website.
CINDER
The starting canon point was ambiguously mixed (but definitely Asian), tan, brown upturned eyes, mousy brown hair in a ponytail, tall, all angles, boyish build and clothes. I HC her as specifically Cambodian (based on her family names and general description), so I based her features on it. She is characterized as brave and decisive ina protagonist way, so I gave her an oval face shape because ovals are serious and constant, and thick eyebrows to intensify her expressions. She sees herself as unfeminine, so I gave her thin lips and short, brown eyelashes. She is always messy and unkempt because of her work, so I gave her an uneven, shaggy haircut to match (inspired by Link LoZ for absolutely no reason). But she is also an awkward nerd, which I integrated through her big, goofy ears. I give her a warm undertone to match her eyes and offset her desaturated hair.
SCARLET
The starting canon point was white skin, curly ginger hair, super freckled, very feminine build, full lips, farmer girl vibes. Her color scheme is very low contrast with hair, eyebrows and eyes that are all within the same value range, because at one point she is described as soft curve shaped as opposed to Cinder's sharp angles, and I wanted to bring out that softness not only in shapes but colors too. She is also brave and decisive, but in a mean old lady way, so I gave her a long, pointy face to match it. I should def give her more defined curls than I usually do. I don't often color her so I thinkkkk I mostly give her a cool undertone, but it's inconsistent.
CRESS
The starting canon point was super pale white skin, nose freckles, heart shaped face, extremely messy wavy honey blond hair, sky blue eyes, super tiny. Everything about her is supposed to scream "pure sweet innocent little baby who never did anything wrong in her life" (even if it isn't the exact truth), and her face is based on a girl I saw at school when I was a teen. Her eyebrows and eye shape are anime inspired because I was an anime fan and so was MM. I give her a cold undertone.
WINTER
The starting canon point was very dark skin, Black, three scars on her right cheek, and a ton of other descriptions because she is the most beautiful girl in the galaxy and the epitome of soft, gentle, princessy femininity. We're talking full lips, gently curving features, insane eyelashes, etc. Her scars should realistically be darker, but the description of them resembling tears and their symbolism of Winter choosing to stick out like a sore thumb stuck so far into my brain that I simply gotta make use of artistic license in this case. I went for 3C type hair and its shape fits the cloud-like dreamy vibe she embodies while keeping to the glossy corkscrew description. Her eyes and lips are her mother's, and thus bear resemblance to Levana's. I give her a warm undertone.
IKO
The starting canon point was light brown skin, golden eyes, button nose, blue braids with golden accessories, and capitalist-made beauty. She is fun, fashionable, and flirty, so her color palette is braver and more expressive than the other girls'. Her beauty is noticeable, but man-made as a product instead of Winter's natural appeal. Her undertone is sometimes cold and sometimes warm because it makes the various color combos easier to execute, and also she is an android so I bet it is possible to do it anyway.
Hope this was interesting~

Star Patrol rocket Piccard-5 encounters an artifact of the incredibly powerful White Marble Civilization. circa 2169, colorized & shipgirlified.
Commission for @foxgirlchorix, based on a render by Holly for @torchship-rpg
This is some of my best rendering work ever! These commissions do have a knack for putting me out of my comfort zone enough to continue developing my technical skills and style.
Image ID: Digital art of two ship girls in a black and blue nebula background. One girl is a very large solid white marble statue with a naked feminine form, pitted and cratered with meteoric impacts, drifting belly-down though space. Instead of a face, her head has a large hole which glows yellow-orange, with a white marble sphere held in space outside of it. A green tractor beam is being emitted towards the second girl, a Torchship named Piccard-5. She is a silver girl with her body resembling a star patrol jumpsuit. Warp drive rings circle her waist like a hula hoop. She is wearing a spherical ball helmet. She is wearing white rocket boots. She has glowing red-orange radiator panels as wings on her back. The white marble sphere's tractor beam is slowly disassembling her into individual hull sections, disconnecting her radiator wings, removing her boots to reveal the rocket propellant inside her legs, and taking her body apart. Piccard-5 is reacting with a worried or confused expression. End Image ID.
Artist's notes and concept sketches in the read more:
When this render was posted Levana immediately had the idea to make it one of a series she was planning on commissioning me for, of shipgirls based on Torchship's Star Patrol (and alien) rockets. So we quickly brainstormed how it would go down and what she could afford price-wise.
When I do big commissions with new characters where I'm creating the design without an existing OC reference, I charge extra for character design. That doesn't just go to waste! Here's the concept art page:
The White Marble shipgirl is inspired by the Eerie and Enigmatic Empty Vessels by @murmurlilies, which Levana really likes--if you look at her blog you might see one of those posts reblogged multiple times. I wanted to pay homage to the eerie and enigmatic empty vessels without directly ripping them off! The first sketch on the upper left is imagining the girl poses by breaking her arms into segments and moving them around, but that never looked quite right to me. The second is basically just a direct study of the empty vessels (with a ball head). The third is after a little more refinement--I liked the cute hair on the empty vessels so I wanted to keep the head mostly intact, and I found a way of keeping the silhouette of the jagged angular hips on the empty vessels but in a very different way! Meteoric impact damage, just like on the original Torchship render. I also used an edited version of one of the Empty Vessels drawings for the thumbnail sketch in the lower right out of laziness.
There's also a sketch of what Piccard-5 looks like when she's not being disassembled. Piccard-5 has a rounded main hull, so it looks much more like a regular space suit helmet than the frustum-shaped helmet on the Newton-2 shipgirl I sketched a while back. The Newton-2 shipgirl had heat radiators as wing shapes on her boots, but making them actual wings on her back makes the disassembly image all the more unsettling.
I changed the hairstyle on the white marble girl when I drew the main drawing because I wanted to evoke like, greco-roman marble statues, and so a curlier/braided look worked better than the cute pixie cut of the empty vessels. I'm really happy with how the final product looks. I knew I wasn't gonna be able to half-ass it with the rendering, you know, just a little shading along the edge; this required a lot of careful thought and it was a lot of fun to do! Especially where the craters interact with the terminator (line between light and dark), just like on the Moon, which I have a lot of experience sketching (see below--the following sketches were made while looking through telescopes at the Moon at night)
Here's a WIP of just the line-art:
and with the basic shading done on the marblegirl
I started with like, a cel-shaded look (?), and then went in and softened the edges, then went over it again to fix the craters. I also added the marble texture to the unshaded base layer.
For the Piccard-5 girl, I spent a lot of time trying to get the pose right. I wanted it to be a little stiff, she's in a suspension beam after all, but not too stiff? And I had to decide like, what pieces should be detached, and where should they be going. In the render, hull pieces are often displaced towards the side, but when doing that to a humanoid, it ruined the pose too much, so i avoided doing too much weird stuff to the torso and kept the disassembled pieces largely to one axis. The cross sections are hollow because they're ship decks. She's a spaceship, not a robot girl. The warp ring was suspiciously untouched by the dissassembly beam in the original render, but i had the marble girl pull a few pieces off of it in my drawing.
Probably the one thing that isn't based on something happening in the render is the belt. Like, rockets don't have belts, cosmonauts do! So that was a fun little touch.

Kill The Emperor!
Inspired by @kaixiety 's fabulous headcanon
“You can’t take me, Cinder!”
“Mama.”
Kai suppressed a smirk. “You can’t take me, Mama!”
“We’re gonna save you from Levana and you can’t stop us!”
Peony shoved a blue doll shoe into Cinder’s hand, aiming it at Kai. Well, the Emperor Kai action figure who was grasped in her father’s hand, under assault from the Linh Cinder “Revolutionary Princess” doll that she was holding.
The dolls were both a blessing and a curse. It was harrowing to see his sweet, pig-tailed daughter dangle him over a viper den, or have a shark tear off his arm so he could become a cyborg “like Mummy.” Not once did he envisage when he held that precious, innocent, downy baby in his arms that she would become a gore-obsessed four-year-old.
Nevertheless, all was forgiven when she had her Cinder and Kai dolls tuck doll Peony into her wooden bed and kiss her goodnight.
“Bang!” Peony shouted, firing the ‘gun.’ The Kai doll stayed upright. “Daddy,” she whispered, “I shot you.”
“Oh!” Kai flung his inanimate counterpart to the floor. “Mama tranquilized me! Now you can escape!”
“You’re asleep. You shouldn’t be talking,” she scolded.
“Right. Sorry.”
Kai heard a chuckle from across the room. While they sat crossed-legged on the living room rug, Cinder was at the dining table pecking away at her port. She was out here ostensibly to work, needing a break away from her office. That was most likely an excuse to spend time with them, as he knew it was impossible to concentrate on low-income benefit schemes with a daughter’s trilling and frolicking in one’s periphery.
But he knew he would do the same. He wouldn’t give up time with Peony even if it could undo every bad thing that had happened to him. Maybe that was why he happily reenacted his own kidnapping as per the little princess’ request. The scornful feelings he’d had at the time of the incident had aged like a bitter wine—stinging as a whole, but pleasant in small sips.
“Let’s go to the Rampion!” Peony announced cheerily as she dragged Kai’s prone body by the hair as any loving daughter would. What was left of it, anyway. Still, the bald patches were comparably better than the markers graffitiing his face. “There’s the ship! And Termaturge Mira is ther—”
“Wait,” Kai interrupted. “How did we get to the roof?”
Peony frowned. “We just…did.”
His eyes narrowed. “So no one tried to stop us on the way?”
“They’re stopping us now!”
Kai feigned agreement, folding his arms. “Okay, okay. If you insist.”
Peony crossed her arms in turn, petulant but sufficiently challenged. She was both stubborn and competitive, so an obstacle was sometimes the only thing that helped her learn. “Wait!” she exclaimed, gleaming in her copper brown eyes with a lightbulb moment. “We took the elevator and Mummy had to stop the guards!”
Kai nodded approvingly. He didn’t actually remember this part, having been the damsel under duress. Peony’s extensive scene-by-scene knowledge was thanks to endless probing of Mummy and her aunts and uncles.
Peony shuffled over to the couch, setting the dolls on her hand and lifting them up to the seat. Kai’s hands acted as the opening elevator doors. At its destination were three teddy bears in traditional imperial guard uniform—gifts from a certain adviser.
“There’s guards on the other side!” she cried.
Kai gasped. “What are we going to do?”
“You’re doing nothing,” she corrected. “But Mama always has a plan.”
A snort came from the dining table.
“You will protect us,” Princess Revolution declared to the guards in a soothingly sweet voice. Peony’s eyes scrunched tightly, casting her gift over the defenceless bears. “You will take us to our ship—”
In fact, Kai thought with a crinkling heart, it was a rather good impression of Cinder using her gift. She was near identical to her mother in the motion, and it was moments like these that floored Kai. Despite Peony looking so much like him, he saw Cinder in her anger and compassion and—
“—or I will kill the emperor!”
Kai startled. “What? That never happened.”
“Yes it did.”
Kai turned his figure’s head, speaking through him: “Cinder, you wouldn’t try to kill me.”
Revolutionary Princess faced the limp emperor. “I will if I have to!”
“Peony,” said Kai, breaking the farce. “Mama wouldn’t do that.”
She emphatically rolled her eyes. “No Daddy, Uncle Thorne told me that Mama putted the gun on your head ‘wike this.” She jabbed the doll shoe into one of his bald patches. “She said she would kill you! And Mama didn’t shoot, but if you don’t stop talking, I will!!!”
In a swift instant, in a flash, with chubby, grabby four-year-old fingers, Peony seized the doll from his hands with a war cry and slammed it into the couch.
“Whoa! Peony!”
The screeching continued. Emperor Kai got multiple knocks to the head.
A strangled laugh caught in his throat. He looked to his wife with a loose grin, expecting giggling over this blatant mischaracterisation.
Cinder was not paying attention to her port, as predicted. But she wasn’t laughing. Her face was indeed scrunched like Peony’s in thought. Then recollection.
“Cinder,” Kai called as the cries died down. “Tell her that didn’t happen.”
She tucked hair behind her ear, returning to her work. A quick swallow.
“Love?”
Peony hauled the emperor’s body to the rooftop, evidently having glamoured the guards into compliance. She hadn’t shot him.
Cinder’s nose pinched guiltily.
Memories poured back into him like long draughts of that bitter old wound wine. Those very guards whom Cinder had manipulated questioning whether she had good intent in marrying their emperor. Thorne often reminding him that he had been completely at their mercy when they’d knocked him out. Her ability to jokingly threaten him without a hint of remorse or hesitancy.
“Love.”
She avoided his gaze.
Never mind. He wasn’t over the kidnapping.

I like the sketch you made! You should try a dark blue and white colour for a lunar look with moons and wispy parts and twinkle stars
Ah!! I can picture that exactly. I started one like that when I was trying to draw Levana in a Wires and Nerve style, but trashed it because she didn’t deserve it and I didn’t have the motivation to spend time on her.
I’m currently working on a blue and purple modified cloud collar design for Cinder, but I’m going to add in some Lunar elements now!
I’m going to keep this specific idea in mind for the future. I no longer need an AU as an excuse to exaggerate the whimsicalness.

It's me again! Hi! Sorry for the absence, lots of family stuff :(
Anyway I had more Aemond's little sister/Daemon's youngest niece (remember her, the one who was reluctant to accept the incestuous nature of her family so Daemon, Aemond, and Nyra fucked her, then married her, then knocked her up) well her name is Levana. She's a spitfire, loves her dragon who's named Moonbryre, she rides everyday, her weapon of choice is a scythe and chain, her eyes are light lilac with flecks of silver. I want her face claim to be Lily James.
I think you have most of Kehlani's info but let me do this again. Long burgundy hair, a tail that's shades of blue and purple with gold accents, blue eyes with flecks of gold, and a secret tattoo. She uses a trident as her main weapon, can control the elements and belongs to Rhaenys and Corlys. I think Zendaya should be used as Kehlani's face claim (also work has resumed on Tail of Tides)
Ooo I'm sorry about the family stuff but it's exciting that you're working on your stories again!

Hello Earthens, I am Princess Levana Blackburn. My tutor tells me that in order to understand the blue planet more I must understand the culture as well. In my opinion there is no better way to understand culture than to converse and consume media. I am looking forward to enjoying my time here.

Summary: Six years after the Lunar Revolution, everything has changed for Crescent Moon Darnel. Now a top notch Lunar government official, Cress spends her time sifting through Lunar databases identifying the millions of people who went missing during Levana's reign, when she comes across a glitch that holds the fate of the entire country in its code. With the help of former lunar guard (and current recluse) Jacin Clay, Cress races against time to uncover a dangerous plot that could change the increasingly volatile tensions between Earth and Luna forever.
“UNFORTUNATELY THIS UNIT IS UNABLE TO PERMIT VISITORS AT THE MOMENT—“
Cress pressed the buzzer by the door for the fifteenth time and resisted the urge to swear into it.
Anyone who didn’t know better would assume that the occupants of the unit were merely out for the night, but she couldn’t be fooled that easily. She’d tracked down the IP address of his port-screen which had led her to this motel at the outskirts of the capital city, Artemisia, and remained unchanged for a week.
He hadn’t left his unit in a week.
“UNIT NUMBER TWO-FOUR-TWO—” The automated voice was cold and unfeeling, as was the sudden breeze that swooped in out of nowhere and stung the back of her neck.
“Jacin— let me in!” She nearly squeaked into the built-in microphone by the buzzer, as another gust of wind ran right through her flimsy apparel. Today was not a good day for yoga pants.
“—STATE YOUR NAME AND PURPOSE OF VISIT TO CONTINUE.”
“Crescent Moon Darnel” she repeated, “Here on official Government business”
“UNFORTUNATELY THIS UNIT IS UNABLE TO PERMIT VISITORS AT THE MOMENT. PLEASE LEAVE YOUR LUNAR ID NUMBER TO BE NOTIFIED OF THE EARLIEST AVAILABLE APPOINTMENT DATE TO SCHEDULE YOUR VISIT.“
“Jacin Clay, I swear to All the Stars I will break this—”
“It’s hard to take you seriously when you say things like Government business”
Cress blinked and stepped back as the door beeped and slid outward to reveal a fraction of a scruffy blonde beard and one blue-gray eye that somehow managed to look both disapproving and exasperated at the same time.
“What do you want, Cress?”
She crossed her arms.
“A ‘Hello Cress, haven’t seen you in a while. Sorry for leaving you outside to freeze off your ass’ would be nice to hear.”
“Hello Cress,” Jacin said through gritted teeth, “What do you want?”
“Did you get my email about the job-“
“Yes, and I clearly stated in that email, that I don’t want it.”
“But the-“
“No.”
“But we’ll be-“
“No.”
“Just give me five-“
“No.”
Cress pinched the bridge of her nose and released a breath to keep from losing her temper. If she’d known Jacin would be this uncooperative she probably would’ve been better off risking her luck alone. Or with the state approved guard she’d been so quick to refuse, Liam something… Caine? Kinney?
“If that’s all you wanted, then you should leave.”
Cress scrambled for a solution as the door began to slide shut once more.
“It’s about Princess Winter,” she blurted, and the beeping stopped. A long silence seemed to stretch between them and she had the strange urge to hold her breath.
Everyone knew that the lunar princess and her bodyguard had broken up almost half a year ago; it was plastered across all the tabloids and net-zines, creating quite the scandal. Nobody knew why, of course, but Jacin quit working at the palace soon after. Cress had heard the news from one of the team members in her department and commed Jacin immediately. He never opened it.
“You said it wasn’t about Winter” Jacin said finally. She could hear the frown in his voice and realised she’d written herself into a corner; automatically reaching out to tug on a lock of her hair for comfort.
The job had nothing to do with Princess Winter really, but she’d finally gotten the council to approve her solo mission under the condition that she be accompanied by a trained agent, i.e., former lunar guard Jacin Clay, who’d been missing for the past six months. So she’d chased him down with a single lead, stood outside his unit all evening and probably acquired some kind of new moon-frostbite in doing so and wasn’t about to give up without him at least hearing her out.
“Right,” she began as the door slid open a little farther, now revealing a faded white t shirt, “Yes, right, I did say that it wasn’t about Princess Winter in the email.. because I didn’t want.. it to.. um, get compromised?”
Not her best execution but it seemed to do the trick. The door slid open completely and Cress stepped into the unit, warmth flooding her from all sides and seeping right into her skin. She released a shudder as Jacin typed a few buttons on the touchpad by the doorframe which automatically lit up the room.
Cress immediately wished it hadn’t.
Calling the unit messy would be an understatement of massive proportions. She smelt the alcohol before she saw it. Rows and rows of reusable cans were scattered around the unit in a weirdly precise manner; some were stacked up against one another, some were carefully placed beside one another in a semicircular pattern, under and over the furniture and some were simply unopened.
It was a controlled sort of chaos and she didn’t know wether or not to bring it up as Jacin walked past her and plopped down on the grey sofa. At least now Cress knew what he’d been doing all week.
Wisely, she chose not to bring up the room and simply sat down on the closest thing she could find— a coffee table adjacent to the sofa. Jacin winced as she accidentally displaced a can and rubbed his face irritatedly. Now that she could see him better in the light, it was clear that he hadn’t slept in a while. The bags under his eyes were rubbed raw, his eyelids were puffy and he was still in his boxers.
Cress would’ve normally been embarrassed; he was so different from the polished, professional lunar guard she’d met a few years ago, but now she couldn’t bring herself to feel anything but pity. The breakup really did a number on him.
“Would you quit it.”
“Quit what?”
“Stop it. Stop looking at me like I’m some kind of charity case.”
But still the same snarky Jacin.
“I’m not!”
“Look, Cress, your face is an open book alright? Just cut it out. I’m completely fine.”
Cress rolled her eyes. He did not look fine. He had never looked less fine in all the time she’d seen him and she’d seen him nearly die multiple times— but she pursed her lips and turned away.
It’s not your business, It’s not your business, she repeated the words her therapist had her memorise, in her head. Jacin and you might’ve been friends once but a lot has changed now and it. is. not. your. business.
“So,” she said out loud, “Cans huh?”
Jacin looked at her in disbelief.
“If you ever need to talk,” she tried again much to Jacin’s chagrin, “I know someone that can—”
“The only thing I need to talk about is how this job has anything to do with Winter” he snapped.
‘You idiot.’ Cress mentally scolded herself, Dr. Miriam would be disappointed in her. She really should’ve minded her own business.
“Well, it’s about that glitch I found in one of the databases regarding Lunar immigration—”
“I read the email Cress,” he sighed, “You think it’s some kind of encryption.”
“Exactly, and just last week one of the council members received a notification with the same base code as the glitch—“
“Wait— council members?” Jacin looked at her, surprised, “The Lunar Council’s behind all this?”
“Yes, but just the surface level stuff—” Cress opened her mouth to backtrack but his eyebrows narrowed immediately.
“Is that why you contacted me? Because you needed someone to advocate for the council again?”
Jacin’s relationship with the newly appointed Lunar Council was precarious on a good day, but after everything that happened at their last Annual General Meeting it had derailed into outright hostility.
Cress chewed the inside of her cheek guiltily; she was partly to blame for that debacle, after all.
“Jacin, this wasn’t Nova’s call—“
But he wasn’t listening to her anymore– Jacin had risen to his feet and begun pacing around the room in brisk, controlled strides, keeping well within his can-stacked path. She watched him walk into the kitchen and walk back out, somehow not upsetting a single aluminium-alloy can from its position despite his animated monologue.
“I knew it! I knew leaving the council to her was a bad move. Let me guess, she wants me to grovel at her feet again. I bet she would just love it if if I came crawling back—”
The ‘she’ in reference to Jacin’s tirade was, of course, the newly instated Lunar Head of the Biochemical Research Wing, Sybil Nova. Daughter of the late Sybil Mira (Head Thaumaturge and Cress’s personal tormentor), and having established a fairly positive reputation within the Lunar community for being a shell herself, Nova was, on paper, the perfect candidate for the job.
Except for the fact that she opposed the existence of lunar guards.
Jacin was on a roll.
“Whose stupid idea was it to nominate the daughter of Levana’s old lapdog as the face of the new Lunar Democracy anyway, they’re the real idiots here–”
“Public vote,” Cress chimed in, but he steamrolled right through her, talking to himself now.
“And why appoint ME of all people, with such a futile mission– oh, I know damn well why. She just wants me to come back empty handed so she can rub it in my face; ‘see this is why the lunar guard is so outdated.. now if we sent a mecCorp to do his job’–“
“IT WAS ME, ALRIGHT?!” Cress yelled finally, unable to take much more of his ranting.
“What?”
She swallowed slowly, nails biting into her palms as she curled her fists.
“It was me. I asked for you to be assigned to the mission.”
Jacin sat back down.
An awkward silence shuffled between them until Jacin finally leaned forward to try to meet her eyes. Cress’s gaze, however, was stubbornly affixed to the floor.
“Cress..” He trailed away, unable to find the words.
“I know you’re still mad at me for what happened.”
“I’m not—“
“And,” she pressed on, “That’s fine if you are. I won’t apologise for what I did that day. But this could be bigger than the both of us.”
Jacin shook his head and looked up to his white-grey ceiling.
“What are you doing, Cress.”
It almost felt like a rhetorical statement when he said it but Cress bristled all the same.
She considered kicking one of the can dominoes out of pure spite but refrained after seeing Jacin’s expression.
“I’m trying to save my country, Jacin, our country— and I need your help.”
This finally got his attention.
Jacin rose and helped her up; Cress took his hand confusedly but before she could say anything he’d already guided her to the door and slid it open.
“Goodbye, Cress.” he said with a note of finality, and locked her out.
______________________________________________________________
Ah.
Cress debated punching the metal but decided that she wasn’t going to go back with both broken knuckles and a broken promise. They’d just have to settle for one.
Sighing, she trudged back to her hover and pulled up the notifications on her portscreen. It read: 3 unopened comms.
Wow. Three already? Carol must be in a bad mood if she sent her three comms within the hour, Cress frowned as she held out her arm, scanning her wrist to open the hover doors. Usually her stringent supervisor refused to go over one, extremely long vidlink that often involved public scolding for a rise in budget costs, even though Cress was sure that they were paying hourly and not per comm. She’d held her tongue anyway, she didn’t need to give Carol yet another reason to hate her.
The hover beeped and deducted 50 univs from her chip but before the doors could flick open, Cress felt something hard and cold press into the back of her head. She didn’t need to turn to know it was a gun.
She slowly raised her arms in surrender.
Stay calm, she thought to herself, you’ve been trained for this. But her heart was beating so loud that Cress might have completely missed what her assailant said if they had not punctured each word with a jab to her head.
“Get. Down. Now.”
Cress obediently dropped to her knees. Unfortunately, the hover was shielding both her and her attacker from the windows of the apartment complex so even if someone had conveniently managed to look outside, they wouldn’t be able to see her.
“What—” She began.
“Be quiet.”
Cress tried to steady her breathing and focus.
This must be a robbery, and seeing as her attacker didn’t attempt to use any glamour, they were most likely a shell. The voice sounded muffled, so the attacker was probably wearing a mask— an escaped convict maybe? Someone who didn’t want to be immediately caught and handed in to the guard. Her fingers twitched; it would take all of four seconds to reach into her hover and pull out the standard-issue taser she’d left in the front seat.
Cress knew she should’ve had it on her at all times, but she didn’t want Jacin to think she’d taser him into submission if he didn’t agree.
The attacker seemed to be rummaging around for something behind her and swearing quietly, giving her enough time to discreetly flick her wrist. Nothing happened for one second, two and then the hover doors clicked open smoothly, opening outwards like insect wings, blinding the attacker for two infinitely precious seconds and Cress quickly lunged to the side just as the gunshot resounded all around her.
“Shit— Shit!”
She rose quickly. Now that she had a clearer view of the perpetrator she was taken aback by how young they seemed to look.
Big brown eyes were their only visible features, with both their hair and the lower half of their face, as Cress had guessed, concealed under a black hood and mask. They were clothed in an inconspicuous outfit, with pale, freckled arms jutting out of an oversized vest, grey pants and hiking boots. She ducked behind the hover again as another gunshot ripped through the night.
Cress just had to reach into the hover for her weapon and it would all be over, but this kid was making it way more difficult than it needed to be.
“Hey!” She called out, trying to distract the attacker, “You don’t want to do this.”
“Shut up, Ungifted.” The attacker spat.
Well, okay then. Cress scooted closer to the unlocked hover and blindly reached inside, mentally cursing her lack of foresight. She should’ve expected that someone would’ve recognised her, even though it’d been nearly six years since the Lunar Revolution.
Their faces had been broadcast over and over like celebrities and there was even a time where she couldn’t walk to her hover without getting ambushed by paparazzi. This was probably some kind of ransom situation.
Her fingers closed around a hard, box like device just as the attacker turned and pointed the gun right between her eyes.
Cress held her breath. She would’ve been scared if she hadn’t noticed the slight tremor in the attacker’s hand. Her hands had shook the same way when she’d first held a gun.
“Get up.”
She quickly scanned the area around her for a distraction but found nothing. She was facing the units directly now. Frowning she tried to discreetly pull the taser out but the attacker narrowed their eyes in suspicion and brought the gun closer. Just as she was about to consider conceding the taser in favour of a well-timed kick, the door to a unit slid open and the last person she’d expected to see walked out.
Jacin?
Noticing the sudden shock in her eyes, her attacker turned quickly giving Cress enough time to pull her hand out of the hover and pull the trigger on the taser. Two thin silver wires shot out of the device and caught the attacker right in the neck, immobilising them and causing them to drop the gun.
Cress quickly kicked it away as they crumpled to the ground, and it slid across the paved road, spinning and spinning until it came to rest at Jacin’s feet.
Cress waved at him awkwardly— he looked too shocked to wave back, before she pressed the trigger again and the wires reeled back into her weapon.
A small part of her was grateful that he’d walked out at just the right time but an even smaller part of her was proud he’d seen her fight and win. It probably wouldn’t change his mind about the job but it would change his mind about her. See, she wanted to say, I’m not weak, I can take care of myself.
“Cress! Move! ”
She dropped the taser, alarmed and looked up to see Jacin clutching the gun tightly, pointing it right beside her head.
“What—“ she began but never finished her sentence.
The last thing Cress remembered was the sound of glass shattering as the hover door beside her exploded and feeling a tiny needle prick the back of her neck, before her world turned dark and she passed out.

Nomic has announced that it is taking Bitcoin live in the ecosystem of Cosmos, making it accessible for applications and other platforms to leverage the digital capabilities of the native token. Users can deposit Bitcoin in applications like Levana and Kujira, to name a few. The announcement was made during Cosmoverse 2023, informing the community that the upgrade will support the IBC transfer of nBTC. nBTC is an IBC-compatible token that users can utilize without undergoing cryptocurrency conversion at any point. The only criterion is that the blockchain has to be based on Cosmos. Users deciding to make full use of this opportunity will experience minimal steps of integration. The interchain upgrade will start on October 27, 2023, and will be operational by October 30, 2023. Benefits will be spread across Nomic and Bitcoiners. For instance, Nomic will be able to tap into the supply of $500+ billion worth of Bitcoin. For Bitcoiners, it means that they will have access to exciting DeFi products in the days to come. Nomic created nBTC to solve the problem of insufficient decentralization and seamlessness. This pertains to the integration of BTC into the Cosmos ecosystem. nBTC eliminates this obstacle by allowing users to transfer their holdings across the Cosmos-based blockchain. With this development, Nomic is now the first non-Cosmos SDK blockchain to implement IBC. Moving forward, Nomic has committed to work for an increase in the efficiency and security of the bridge. One change that the community can expect is a change in the Nomic Reserve script. The bridge will run with a limited capacity in its earlier stages. The limit has been set to 21 BTC for slower growth of reserves. Users cannot deposit more funds once the bridge reaches its full capacity. Also, applications cannot generate more deposit addresses following the full-capacity mark. The first to adopt the milestone is Kujira. It has integrated Interchain Deposits, allowing its vibrant community to access nBTC in the upcoming upgrade. Users will be able to deposit BTC through the BLUE Web application. Other functions that users can perform are minting USK by keeping nBTC as collateral, lending nBTC, borrowing nBTC, and placing a bid on nBTC that has been liquidated. Needless to say, there are more functions that users can explore. Osmosis will follow the trend, empowering users to provide liquidity for nBTC while also buying and selling the token. They can deposit BTC through the Osmosis Zone UI. Levana will mirror these steps for its users. The announcement comes days after Nomic shared that mainnet Bitcoin was live on Nomic. This dates back to June 30, 2023, when it evaluated how the Nomic Bitcoin Bridge was helping the ecosystem bring Bitcoin into it. Bitcoin goes live in Cosmos with nBTC on October 27, 2023; however, the mechanism will only be activated on October 30, 2023.

@kaixiety apologies I have no self-control.
She seized the doll from his hands with a war cry and slammed it into the couch.
“Whoa!
Kai and Peony playing together
I like to imagine that Kai doesn’t find out about this part of the kidnapping until several years later when he hears his kid repeat it after being told a story by another member of the rampion crew

So, @nightofthelark and I fell down a hole last night and made some Lunar Chronicles ladies with Love Nikki, and here are my results!
There were a lot of aspects that were tricky to replicate with the pre-existing options I had available, but I think they came out pretty well.
