🚨 New Noodle Alert 🚨
Meet Nishi! Told myself I wouldn’t get another ball python, but couldn’t resist her. Snakes need to stop coming in such pretty colors.

Wasn't even looking at ball pythons that day I was interested in hognoses or blue tongue skink but we passed this guy who had really pretty morphs and this one baby was smooshing up against the lock and I made the comment rather fondly that she wanted to get out and he proceeds to take her out and hand her right to me and I absolutely fell in love with her, she even nuzzled into my hand and parascoped and didn't once ball up or look nervous although she did give me the massage squeezies which I've been told means they're trying to grip so they can more better but
I didn't have an enclosure set up so I couldn't take her home I'm praying she's still available next month at the next expo the guy said he'd be there and he hopes she's still there for me too.....
I already want to call her Sallie May.

Hey reptile community, I need YOUR help!
Hello Reptiblr,
I am creating a searchable database of all reptile morphs that have some type of medical issue associated with them. Birth defects, an increased rate of a specific issue happening, neurological problems, skeletal deformities; you name it and I want to document it. The problem is; the reptile community is very decentralized and information is hard to find. This is especially true for newer/less well known morph projects and morphs that are not stateside.
Right now: I have already got the more common issues like the base spider ball python, enigma morph leopard gecko, lemon frost leopard gecko, and sunkissed corn snake. Cinnamon ball python and super black pastel have also been documented. i have also managed to track down some lesser known combos like the Lichen leopard gecko (contains the enigma morph) and Meteor (also contains enigma) but there is still a LOT more ground to cover.
i have been combing through forums and morphmarket but I still need your help.
if you have a picture of:
An abyss morph (not Abyssian) leopard gecko
A Smaug Morph leopard gecko
please reblog this post or shoot me an ask with the picture.
And if anyone knows:
problematic frog morphs (any species)
Problematic burmese, reticulated, or carpet python morphs
Problematic axolotl morphs involving grafting (or genetic issues)
Problematic corn snake morphs
problematic gecko morphs (any species)
lesser-known morph combos containing the enigma, lemon frost, or spider morph
Please reblog this post or shoot me an ask with the name of the morph, a description of the issues the morph has, and a link to a picture.
i am going to continue forum deep-diving but any help will be greatly appreciated.

I felt the same way about blue-eyed lucy bp's! They come in hundreds of color combos and patterns, why no color OR pattern??? I am curious though, do those blue eyes appear for any other morph, or is it strictly for the white snakes? Because those eyes ARE gorgeous.
Blue is a super rare eye color in ball pythons, and blue-eyed leucistics are pretty much the only ones who have them (to my knowledge, at least)! We usually only get blue eyes in ball pythons that both are completely leucistic (lacking all pigmentation in their scales) AND have light pigmentation in their eyes exclusively (causing the blue color). If both of those conditions aren't met, you'll either get a snake with dark eyes (too much melanin in the eyes) or red eyes (no pignmentation in the eyes at all).
But other ball python morphs can have beautiful, light-colored eyes! Light-colored eyes can pop up in any morph that alters pigmentation, and they're often light yellow or green.
The lesser complex usually causes yellows and dark greens:
And the pastel complex can give you astonishingly light green eyes:

#I totally understand why someone breeding exclusively for show tricolor mice wouldn't want this#But coming from a background of reptile breeding it always seems to me that new colors are more desirable#Especially if they're pretty! (via @wingstothesun)
So, you kind of answered half of it even if you didn't know it. The chances are pretty good that anywhere you found online that is talking about quad colors is talking about them for show purposes. Quadcolor is not a recognized show pattern (and it's a pattern, not a color even though... color is in the name... I'll get to that in a sec), and had no standards. So when you get one out of a tricolor line, it's undesirable for show because it cannot be shown.
The other half is that quadcolor isn't a new color or a new pattern on its own. Tricolor isn't one single morph, it's not one single gene. It's a poor quality tricolor, where tricolor also isn't a single gene. To liken tricolor to reptile breeding, it's more like a queen bee ball python. For anyone reading along that doesn't know, Queen Bee isn't a mutation, it's the phenotype of genetic combination of the spider + pastel + lesser genes. Tricolor is the same, it's the phenotype of several genes being combined, except with tricolor, there's at least three ways to make it depending on which genes you combine together (usually splash + pied, these days, with another gene that causes clumping like chinchilla or the himalayan gene). Because of the need to carefully maintain the balance of the genes, you're pretty much not going to find tricolors outside of show breeders, or at least people who know enough about the genetics to know they don't want quadcolors.
Which is to say again, quadcolor mouse is not a new mutation or even a new combination; it's just a badly marked tricolor. Usually the fourth color is showing because the splash gene is of a poor quality or the color isn't clumping the way it should. Sometimes the himalayan gene causes different coloration because of temperature or pointing. What ends up happening on them is the colors muddy up and you end up with a mouse that looks like it's just having a harsh molt. I have a couple of splashes from a line that the breeder was not paying attention to (she didn't even know they were splash, I only noticed because I was handling one for a bit, they're extremely muddy), but I got them more because the does are 1 copy fox 1 copy tan bellied and with the splash gene that did weird things I wanted to test.
So, in the end, no one's purposely producing quadcolor mice because they aren't really a morph of their own. Because they're a poor quality tricolor, you can't improve the quality of a quadcolor without making them tricolors again and you can't even maintain the four colors without it eventually muddying out into nothing attractive. Since most people that ever see quadcolors in the first place are breeding tricolors, and maintaining a tricolor line is a pain in the ass on a good day, keeping the poor quality ones to breed would be a waste of time, money, and space.
They do make a nice one-off pet mouse, when you get an individual from a tricolor line! Just not something anyone wants for breeding.
Same litter, a couple of days later! They are coloring up REALLY NICELY.
