Prom Night (1980) is one of six horror films in which Jamie Lee Curtis appeared over a three-year span from 1978 to 1981 and the last covered by the Grue-Crew. Three John Carpenter films (Halloween, The Fog, Halloween II) and Prom Night are joined by Road Games and Terror Train. 

Prom Night is not the best of Curtis’s 1978-1981 six-pack of horror movies (does that go without saying?), but is it the worst? Leslie Nielsen, soon to go through his transformation to a standout comedic actor, has little to do as Curtis’s character’s father and the school’s principal. There’s also the student body providing fodder for the killer, the creepy kids that set the whole thing in motion fifteen years earlier, and athe disco music and dancing. Don’t worry. The Grue Crew will give you the straight poop.

At the time of this writing, Prom Night is available to stream from Shudder, Amazon Prime, Peacock, Hoopla, Kanopy, Tubi, PlutoTV, and Freevee. It is also available on physical media as a Blu-ray formatted disc from Synapse Films. 

Every two weeks, Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror 1980s podcast will cover another horror film from the 1980s. The next episode’s film, chosen by Chad, will be Ghost Story (1981), based on Peter Straub’s 1979 novel! The Grue-Crew has been wanting to do this one for a long time! My quest to watch 80 x 80s movies continues with Prom Night!

Being a big fan of the Scream movies, I had to give Prom Night a viewing, and, I guess, it's okay. If you have seen any movies in the Slasher genre, then you know where this movie is going from the off and there will be fewĺ surprises for you. However, that doesn't mean you should give Prom Night a watch, and that it is not and enjoyable movie.

It has everything you expect from a Slasher movie, lots of build-up with a few killings before the big ending where there is murder galore and the classic killer reveal.

Jamie Lee Curtis is great as the female lead, she always is. The rest of the cast are fine, and I was even surprised to see Leslie Nielsen putting in an appearance as well.

Prom Night, it's not going to change your world, but if you are a fan of Slasher movies and you haven't yet seen Prom Night, you should give it a go.

that’s a hard question, i’m a big fan of a lot of the actors…..if i had to choose it would probably be the original for both! i really love the essence of the 1931 movie, both Dwight Frye and Bela Lugosi were amazing actors for them!

though that doesn’t change the fact i absolutely adore how Nicholas Hoult and Cage both played in renfield!

(i am also a big loser for how Leslie Nielsen and Peter MacNicol played in dracula dead and loving it - so really i just love all the actors! Honestly they all have their own take on the characters so it’s hard to choose!)

I didn’t make a pride post yesterday after the festival because we took a nap as soon as we got home

It was a blast tho, I got to be in the parade with the rest of the local mens chorus as well as my handsome partner then performed on the main stage with the guys and we had a great fucking time

I don’t talk about it on here that often but the fact that I, an afab masc nb who doesn’t pass that well, can fit so well into this group of guys and be easily and enthusiastically accepted into the chorus makes me teary if I think about it too hard. They’ve been nothing but accepting and kind to me when I could have been such a freak, even making sure I’m okay with dressing room arrangements n such. I hope other transmasc people saw me in the group and are encouraged to join, since I was so nervous about not being allowed in or being an outcast when I first tried out. I love being a part of this group so much. These guys are so great.

The last movie I watched was Airplane! (1980). While some of the humour is outdated, and definitely from a different time, the absurdism stands up SO well. I've lost count of how many times I've watched it, it's one of my all-time favourites. Leslie Nielsen's straight faced delivery of his lines gets me every time, so does the girl scout bar fight scene, and the part where a war vet performs an Ethel Merman song.

If you're a fan of seeing really silly jokes and gags portrayed in a serious situation, then I think you'd enjoy Airplane! (Just do keep in mind, there's some outdated humour in there).

(I was completely and totally boggled by the concept.
