Christian Liberté Boltanski
Christian Liberté Boltanski (6 September 1944 – 14 July 2021) was a French sculptor, photographer, painter, and film maker. He is best known for his photography installations and contemporary French conceptual style.
Early life
Boltanski was born in Paris on 6 September 1944. His father, Étienne Alexandre Boltanski, a physician, was Jewish and had come to France from Russia, while Marie-Elise Ilari-Guérin, his Roman Catholic mother originated from Corsica, descended from Ukrainian Jews. His Jewish heritage was a large influence in Boltanski's household. During World War II, while living in Paris, his father escaped deportation by hiding in a space under the floorboards of the family apartment for a year and a half. Christian grew up with this knowledge, and his early experiences with wartime affairs deeply affected him. These experiences would influence his artwork later on. He dropped out of school at age 12.
Early career
Boltanski began creating art in the late 1950s, but did not rise to prominence until almost a decade later through a few short, avant-garde films and some published notebooks in which he referenced his childhood. He had his first one-man exhibition at the Théâtre Le Ranelagh in May 1968. His earliest works included imagery of ideal families and imaginary lifestyles (something Boltanski always lacked), made to display as if they were in museums.
Installation art
Le Lycée Chases (1986-1987) at the Rubell Museum DC in 2022
Boltanski began creating mixed media/materials installations in 1986 with light as essential concept. Tin boxes, altar-like construction of framed and manipulated photographs (e.g. Le Lycée Chases, 1986–1987), photographs of Jewish schoolchildren taken in Vienna in 1931, used as a forceful reminder of mass murder of Jews by the Nazis, all those elements and materials used in his work are used in order to represent deep contemplation regarding reconstruction of past. While creating Reserve (exhibition at Museum für Gegenwartskunst in Basel in 1989), Boltanski filled rooms and corridors with worn clothing items as a way of inciting profound sensation of human tragedy at concentration camps. As in his previous works, objects serve as relentless reminders of human experience and suffering. His piece, Monument (Odessa), uses six photographs of Jewish students in 1939 and lights to resemble Yahrzeit candles to honor and remember the dead. "My work is about the fact of dying, but it's not about the Holocaust itself." In 1971 Boltanski produced his installation, L' Album de la famille D. 1939-1964.
Additionally, his enormous installation titled "No Man's Land" (2010) at the Park Avenue Armory in New York City, is a great example of how his constructions and installations trace the lives of the lost and forgotten.

Fantastic planet (1973)
In a world where the Draags reign supreme; humans are enslaved for the entertainment of the Draag children while those who manage to survive in the wild are ruthlessly hunted and culled.
Damn what a movie. It's quite a simple story with easy to follow themes but it's done without shoving it in your face. The open-endedness of it all really got me invested in the world. If anything I wish fantastic planet was longer so I could see more, it is only 70 minutes long so it doesn't have much time to breathe after an event before the next one starts. Our protagonist isn't too three dimensional but he works as an audience surrogate since we see both the domesticated and wild aspects of human life.
While the animation is a bit limited the art itself is absolutely gorgeous. I love how textured everything is. Every creature has such amazing designs, the Draags' perfectly round eyes make them look super uncanny and the other non-human animals look so interesting that it made me want to see more wildlife in this universe. I'm not a big fan of surrealism but it fits so well with this. You can tell how much love went into each frame.
Probably my favourite animated movie of the 70s so far. It makes perfect sense that it became a sort of cult classic.

“…I HAVE COME TO THE PERSONAL CONCLUSION THAT WHILE ALL ARTISTS ARE NOT CHESS PLAYERS, ALL CHESS PLAYERS ARE ARTISTS.” MARCEL DUCHAMPBIOGRAPHY OF MARCEL DUCHAMP 1887-1968:Henri-Robert-Marcel Duchamp was born July 28, 1887, near Blainville, France. In 1904, he joined his artist brothers, Jacques Villon and Raymond Duchamp-Villon, in Paris, where he studied painting at the Academie Julian until 1905.Duchamps early works were Post-Impressionist in style. He exhibited for the first time in 1909 at the Salon des Independants and the Salon d’ Automne in Paris. His paintings of 1911 were directly related to Cubism but emphasized successive images of a single body in motion. In 1912, he painted the definitive version of Nude Descending a Staircase; this was shown at the Salon de la Section d’Or of that same year and subsequently created great controversy at the Armory Show in New York in 1913.Duchamps radical and iconoclastic ideas predated the founding of the Dada movement in Zurich in 1916.By 1913, he had abandoned traditional painting and drawing for various experimental forms, including mechanical drawings, studies, and notations that would be incorporated in a major work, The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even (1915-23; also known as The Large Glass). In 1914, Duchamp introduced his ready made common objects, sometimes altered, presented as works of art, which had a revolutionary impact upon many painters and sculptors. In 1915, Duchamp traveled to New York, where his circle included Katherine Dreier and Man Ray, with whom he founded the Societe Anonyme in 1920, as well as Louise and Walter Arensberg, Francis Picabia, and other avant-garde figures. After playing chess avidly for nine months in Buenos Aires, Duchamp returned to France in the summer of 1919 and associated with the Dada group in Paris.
In New York in 1920, he made his first motor-driven constructions and invented Rrose Slavy, his feminine alter ego.Duchamp moved back to Paris in 1923 and seemed to have abandoned art for chess but in fact continued his artistic experiments. From the mid-1930s, he collaborated with the Surrealists and participated in their exhibitions.Duchamp settled permanently in New York in 1942 and became a United States citizen in 1955.During the 1940s, he associated and exhibited with the Surrealist migrs in New York, and in 1946 began Etant donnes: 1. la chute d’eau 2. le gaz d’clairage, a major assemblage on which he worked secretly for the next 20 years. He died October 2, 1968, in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France.A PASSION FOR CHESS:Marcel Duchamp had a lifelong passion for chess. He once said “I am still a victim of chess. It has all the beauty of art – and much more. It cannot be commercialized. Chess is much purer than art in its social position.”March 1952, Duchamp had given up painting in favor of chess thirty years before.Marcel Duchamp played thousands of chess games, and he was known as a very strong Chess Master.Duchamp’s creativity had a significant impact in art. One wonders how chess influenced his way of thinking and his views about art and creativity.
Duchamp once said:“The chess pieces are the block alphabet which shapes thoughts; and these thoughts, although making a visual design on the chess-board, express their beauty abstractly, like a poem…. I have come to the personal conclusion that while all artists are not chess players, all chess players are artists.” Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968), French artist, address, Aug. 30, 1952, New York State Chess Association.Duchamp was not only an avid chessplayer; he was also an active member of the chess community and made multiple contributions to chess, which will also made him a chess philanthropist.
THE MOVIE – PORTRAIT OF AN ARTIST: MARCEL DUCHAMP – A GAME OF CHESS (1963):This movie is an interview segment with the French artist. Filmed in black-and-white, this interview was held at the Pasadena Art Museum in 1963. Duchamp discusses his theories on the game of chess, his expatriate status in America, and his decision to stop working after 1923.Article is by Francis M. Naumann Fine Art, LLC

Looking back on 2019 I decided to list a handful of political / alternative news websites rather than films, albums or books. In the UK the corporate media stooped to shocking new lows during our recent General Election campaign. Such dirty tactics are to be expected of conglomerates owned by the likes of Rupert Murdoch and his fellow right wing billionaires but this time around, previously ‘liberal’ outlets such as the BBC and Guardian also fully participated in the outrageous lies, smears and character assassination against the leader of the opposition Labour Party. The British population were now being forced fed the Establishment’s propaganda du jour from every possible direction. Personally I try to gather my information from as many alternative outlets as possible to contrast with the 24 hour corporate brainwashing we’re subjected to these days. I’ve listed just five sites from the dozens I regularly visit and although I certainly don’t agree with everything expressed on these sites I do feel that it essential that in supposed free and democratic societies we are at least exposed to a variety of viewpoints and opinions - rather than being trapped inside social media echo chambers in an Internet that is increasingly controlled and censored by sophisticated algorithms and where politically correct digital lynch mobs accuse anyone with an opinion that contradicts the official narrative of being a Russian agent! Anyway, a Happy New Year to you all and here’s hoping 2020 sets the new decade off in roaring style!

2019 was far from my favorite year. Regardless, I managed to release not one, but two new double albums by The Flying Luttenbachers (as well as two European tours with the unit) in addition to the usual slew of improvised music gigs and releases, and co-ordinating and producing an archival release of vintage NYC weirdness (Ozone). I also rocked Mexico City with Lydia Lunch Retrovirus, played a ridiculous gig with Encenathrakh, and disbanded Cellular Chaos (for now, at least).
When I become obsessed (or re-obsessed with something), it usually leads to a ton of proselytizing Facebook status posts. Combing my 2019 posts, it seems that my musical obsessions this year weren't very highbrow. Ha ha ha. Yes, I'm super into Xenakis, Cecil Taylor and whatever else, but dumber music can supply great creature comfort, and I guess I needed that in large amounts, so that's what it was. Sometimes badass modernists have to take time out to stay in bed all day and read comics because it's a hard cold world out there.
Weasel Walter top 10 musical obsessions of 2019 1. Kid Creole and the Coconuts (1980-1985 era) 2. Redd Kross 3. The Saints "I'm Stranded" 4. Jane Aire and the Belvederes 5. Miles Davis 1972-1975 6. 217. La Planete Sauvage (Fantastic Planet) (1973)
8/10
On the planet Ygam, in the far future, giant blue natives ("Draags") keep the imported humans ("Oms") as exotic pets. However, many humans escape captivity and live in parks as an invasive species. Terr, a pet Om, learns to read the Draag's language, and must find a way to bring human intelligence to the Draag's attention, or else escape the planet altogether, before they exterminate all wild Oms.
By portraying humans as animals, it turns the tables on us in terms of cruelty and so, like Bambi, it is very successful at teaching kids to feel bad for tormenting animals - that is, if you can get a kid to watch this crazy shit. (My brother and I liked this movie when we were children, so it's not impossible.) Based on a French novel, Oms en Serie by Stefan Wul, the alien landscape and animals Fantastic Planet contains are strange without surcease, and the music sounds like late Pink Floyd. The art is extremely unusual, and appears to be drawn with pen and ink or graphite, rather than painted on cels. This movie is very easily available in English, and for some reason it played on TV a lot in the 70's and 80's. I highly recommend guilt-tripping your favorite children in your life by making them watch this movie.

Robert Rauschenberg, Open Score
Performance (a) presented as part of 9 Evenings: Theatre and Engineering, The 69th Regiment Armory, New York, N.Y., United States, October 14-23, 1966. Technological design: Jim McGee Racquet design and construction: Bill Kaminski Performers: Mimi Kanarek, Frank Stella (tennis players), Simone Forti, Christopher Rauschenberg, Robert Rauschenberg, Christine Williams, a group of 500 people gathered together for the two performances Direction of the performers: Elaine Sturtevant, Susan Hartnett, Clark Poling Technical assistance for the closed-circuit video broadcast: Bill Hartig Sound mixing: Steve Paxton Camera operators: Robert Breer, Les Levine Projectionist: John Giorno Lighting design: Jennifer Tipton, Beverly Emmons (assistant) Doorkeepers: Alex Hay, Deborah Hay In Open Score, Robert Rauschenberg derived the content of his performance from the characteristics of the performance venue. The tennis racquet suggested both the idea of the ready-made (at other times tennis was played at the Armory) and that of a dance improvised in accordance with specific rules. The lighting, however, which dimmed each time a racquet hit a ball, conferred on the player’s actions a function bound up with a complex technological system. During the second part of the performance, which took place in total darkness, a crowd on stage, which was filmed with infrared cameras, appeared to mirror the viewers assembled on the bleachers that served as seats. As close as the onstage crowd was, it could be seen, paradoxically, only on the screens (1). First moment: Two tennis players (Mimi Kanarek and Frank Stella) took up positions on the tennis court set up at centre stage. Contact microphones fitted onto the racquets picked up the reverberations produced by the sound of the balls (b), (c). These data were relayed by short wave (FM) to two receivers/transistors and from there to the Armory speakers. At the same time, the reverberations of the balls hitting the racquet strings triggered an automatic mechanism that shut off the 36 lights on the Armory ceiling one by one. Thus the stage and auditorium were gradually plunged into darkness. During the performance of October 14, the mechanism did not function properly; in order to simulate the effect of simultaneity, the engineer Jim McGee had to manually operate the apparatus in order to cut the power to the lights. The match ended once all the lights were out (d), (e), (f), (g), (h), (i), (j). During this first performance, the sound of the tennis balls hitting the racquets was recorded on six reel to reel tape recorders. The transition to the second moment was facilitated by playing these sounds in the dark. Second moment: Nearly 500 people then assembled on the stage, where they were filmed by infrared cameras that had been set up on the balcony. Each participant was required to move around in accordance with 10 memorized instructions provided by Rauschenberg. The sequence of the instructions, and hence that of the participants’ actions, was signaled by numbered panels and flashes of light. The instructions were as follows: “1. Touch someone who is not touching you. 2. Touch two places on your body where you are ticklish (don’t laugh). 3. Hug someone quickly then move to someone else. Continue this until next cue (do this seriously, quickly and smoothly). 4. Draw a rectangle in the air as high as you can reach. 5. Take out a handkerchief and wipe your nose (do not blow). 6. Women brush hair 7. Move close together. 8. Move apart. 9. Men take off jackets; replace them; repeat. 10. Sing one of the 10 songs being sung (loudly), or sing a song of your choice.” (2) The image of this crowd appeared on three screens hung in front of the audience (k), (l), (m), (n), (o), (p), (q), (r), (s), (t), (u), (v), (x). During the performance of October 14, Rauschenberg played a pre-recorded soundtrack on which individuals gave their names one by one. This recording was not used during the performance of October 23. On the other hand, an additional element was added: Rauschenberg walked across the stage carrying the swaddled body of Simone Forti, putting her down from time to time; she, for her part, sang an Italian ballad (y), (z). The length of the performances is not mentioned in the documents that were consulted when writing these notes.

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 23
Opening: “Posing Modernity: The Black Model from Manet and Matisse to Today” at Wallach Art Gallery This exhibition, which will travel to the Musée d’Orsay in Paris in March 2019, focuses on various representations of the black figure throughout the development of modern art. Photographs, correspondence, and films reveal details about the models’ interactions with painters, sculptors, and photographers. The New York presentation, which is curated by Denise Murrell, will center on the black female figure and takes Édouard Manet’s depictions of Laure—who posed as the maid in the famed painting Olympia—as a point of departure. Both stagings will feature work by Frédéric Bazille, Edgar Degas, Henri Matisse, Charles Alston, Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, and others, along with pieces by modern and contemporary artists who consider the legacy of these portrayals. Wallach Art Gallery, 615 West 129th Street, 6–8 p.m.
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 25
Performance: Liliana Porter at the Kitchen The new play THEM, co-directed by the artists Liliana Porter and Ana Tiscornia, is composed of a series of short scenes that deal with one of the oft-recurring themes in Porter’s work: the divide between comedy and drama. (Porter is currently the subject of a survey at El Museo del Barrio.) The two artists created a glass windscreen and mosaic seating area for the Scarborough train station in upstate New York in 2010, and though details about the new work’s plot are sparse, THEM is being teased with an image of a masked man staring at a duck. The Kitchen, 512 West 19th Street, 6 p.m. Tickets $20/25

©LORRAINE O’GRADY AND ARTISTS RIGHTS SOCIETY (ARS), NEW YORK/COURTESY ALEXANDER GRAY ASSOCIATES, NEW YORK
Opening: Lorraine O’Grady at Alexander Gray Associates The title of this new exhibition from Lorraine O’Grady—“Cutting out CONYT”—is a reference to the longstanding conceptual artist’s 1977 text-based work Cutting Out The New York Times. That piece, in which poems were created out of collaged Sunday Times editions, is revisited here in new works that deploy her 1977 verses as source material for a series of modified “haiku diptychs.” In a statement, O’Grady said, “Produced with 40 more years of life and aesthetic experience, I feel that [the “Cutting Out CONYT” work] embraces the mysterious intertwinings of narrative and politics, post-blackness and blackness in a way that Cutting Out The New York Times could not accomplish or even imagine.” Alexander Gray Associates, 510 West 26 Street, 6–8 p.m.
Opening: Al Loving at Garth Greenan Gallery The first exhibition since the late artist’s 2017 solo outing at Art + Practice in Los Angeles, this show, titled “Space, Time, Light,” showcases paintings and mixed media works produced by Al Loving between 1976 and 1993. Spotlighting the abstractionist’s experimentations with geometry and color, the show features Loving’s collages and fabric wall-hangings made from torn canvas, which were often made in mind of work by Romare Bearden, Henri Matisse, and Hans Hofmann. Garth Greenan Gallery, 545 West 20th Street, 6–8 p.m.

COURTESY ACA GALLERIES, NEW YORK
Opening: Faith Ringgold at ACA Galleries This exhibition takes a look at some of Faith Ringgold’s lesser-shown works, including political posters, a series of figurative soft sculptures, and abstract pieces made with acrylic on canvas. Among the pieces featured are 1971’s People’s Flag Show Poster, which is lined with text written by Ringgold, part of which reads, “ARTISTS, WORKERS, STUDENTS, WOMEN, THIRD WORLD PEOPLES. WHAT DOES THE FLAG MEAN TO YOU?” ACA Galleries, 529 West 20th Street, 7–9 p.m.
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 26
Opening: Michael Krebber at Greene Naftali A contemporary of Cosima von Bonin and Albert Oehlen, the painter Michael Krebber has often resisted espousing a single aesthetic throughout his decades-long career—and sometimes has even appeared to resist painting altogether. His works are minimal and drily humorous, and often evoke pared down images and motifs using just a few paint strokes. According to a release for his new exhibition, Krebber’s latest works feature “transcriptions of anonymous vitriolic blogs and a snail motif appropriated from Duchess Kate Middleton,” among other subjects. Greene Naftali, 508 West 26th Street, 6–8 p.m.
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 27
Opening: TEFAF New York at Park Avenue Armory The fall edition of the TEFAF art fair in New York will convene 93 exhibitors to show antiquities, decorative works, and more. Alongside the fair’s booths will be a series of discussions: one talk, for example, will focus on the legacy of Eugène Delacroix. Another will focus on “Retrieving Lost Identities: The Black Figure in Art, Past and Present.” Park Avenue Armory, 643 Park Avenue, 12–8 p.m. Tickets $25/$55/$75

A Caroline in Salzburg
The last destination of my “Eastern Europe” trip was Salzburg, Austria. A city very close to the German border, surrounded by the Alps. Salzburg, is known for being used in the popular 1965 film The Sound of Music, starring Julie Andrews, which tells the story of the Von Trapp family singers. Salzburg, is also the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the most prolific and influential composer of the Classical era.
DAY ONE
One my first day in Salzburg, I took a Bavarian Salt Mines tour recommended to me by my friend Kiersten. This was probably one of the coolest things I have ever experienced. On the tour, you get to put on a protective miner’s suit (mine fit so cozy, I didn’t want to take it off) (Photo A). Then you board a tiny train to ride through the tunnels. At the end of the train ride, you get to slide down a wooden slide. What an adrenaline rush! With a tour guide, you wander around the mines learning about the excavation techniques and technology to remove the salt. Towards the end of the tour, you get to see this 6 foot deep underground lake, that is crystal clear. In the lake, they soak the rock and extract the salt from it (Photo B). We rode a little boat across the lake, then boarded the train to exit the tunnels. Honestly, it was one of the best experiences I’ve had, 10/10 would recommend it, especially to families with kids.

The tour continued, and we rode through the Bavarian Alps. Technically, we were in Germany, and not Austria for this trip. We saw the Eagle’s Nest, which was Hitler’s second headquarters located on top of Kehlstein. It was a very expensive structure to build and a few people lost their lives in the process. Hitler only visited the site a total of 14 times, because he was afraid of heights.
We stopped for lunch in Berchtesgaden, I went and got the best schnitzel and potatoes ever for lunch, while admiring the amazing view of the alps. I think, one of the places I will miss the most is Germany, especially Bavaria (Photo C).

The bus returned to Salzburg, and after a quick nap to recharge, I explored the city. I walked through the Mirabelle Gardens, to Mozart’s Birth House (Photo D). Albeit a little pricey, I visited the museum, which had some artifacts from his life, including his violin and a model of his piano (the original is in the other Mozart museum in Salzburg) (Photos E & F). After the museum, I visited the cathedral that was built in 1614 (Photo G). It’s a very beautiful cathedral, especially the ceilings (Photo H). It’s crazy how the ceilings are so detailed; maybe it’s because people look up to pray? The cathedral also has four organs total; that’s a lot of organs. I wonder if they play them all simultaneously?; how would that sound? It had been cold and rainy outside, so I warmed up with some goulash and strudel for dinner, before heading back to my hostel for the night.

DAY TWO
On my second day and last full day in Salzburg, I began my day with The Sound of Music tour. If you’re a fan of the movie, then this is the tour for you! We drove around Salzburg, and the surrounding area visiting sites that were used in the movies, all while learning some behind the scenes secrets (Photos I & J). Did you know that little Gretel almost drowned in the canoel scene? After this incident, Kym Karath (the actress) immediately wanted to go home. So, the directors started to bribe her with candies and cookies so she would stay. She ate so much that when it was time to film the final scene, Christopher Plummer refused to carry her up the mountain because she was “too fat”. So, they ended up using a doll.
Photo I: the back of the Von Trapp house was entirely different from the front; they filmed in two different locations. The lake with the canoe scene, where Gretel almost drowned!
Photo J: The Gazebo, where Something Good was filmed
The second part of the tour, we drove around the Bavarian Alps, which were covered in snow, singing along to songs from the movie. Our tour guide was so nice, and energetic. it was a ton of fun. We stopped in Mondsee, which is home to the church where the wedding scene between Maria and the Captain was filmed (Photos K & L).The last stop on our trip was Mirabelle Gardens, I ran around the gardens with my new friends, I met from the tour, playing around like the Von Trapp children (Photos M & N).

Afterwards, I went up to Hohensalzburg Castle (Photo O). The weather was bad on and off, it was very windy, cold and snowy. When I was outside, enjoying the amazing view from the castle, thankfully the weather was cooperative and I got amazing photos (Photo P). When I was inside enjoying the exhibits, I’d look out the window and see a snow storm. The exhibits in the castle were cool, you had your typical rooms full of china and cutlery, refurbished rooms and armory. There was even a small marionette museum too (Photo Q)!

The weather was getting really bad in Salzburg, so I called it a day and went back to my hostel and had dinner then watched The Sound of Music for the second time in a row, to see if I could point out the secrets I learned from the tour. It’s such a good movie, but it’s also VERY long!
This “Eastern Europe” trip was great, I’m so glad I found the time to explore these Germanic and Slavic countries. Even though I was by myself, I met some great people in my hostel and got to explore the cities at my own pace and see things that interested me. I’m going to miss Europe in general, so much once I’m back in the states; I’m going to miss the spontaneity, freedom and adventuring.
