SUBLIME CINEMA #654 - LE RAYON VERT

Eric Rohmer is my favorite among New Wave directors; for France what Mike Leigh is for England. They share styles: Rohmer would corral his actors beforehand and they would all work together formulating the dialog. The result is a constant, fresh stream of naturalism. His lead actress, Marie Rivière, was given top billing here, not just for her acting, but for her creation of character, dialog and writing. Everybody acted off her, not off the director.

The scope of his films were really narrow. He explored only a few themes, obsessively. But he did it so well. Le Rayon Vert (The Green Ray) captures something really perfect about internal solitude - it's one of the best late night lonely time movies.
