After well over a year of trying to see my fav opera live again and about two consecutively cancelled performances, I finally saw Don Giovanni again at the Slovak National Theatre. This was my 4th time seeing this production and even though I saw a lot of the cast for the first time in their roles, all of them were splendid.
Highlights of this show were:
• Leporello dragging in a super drunk and passed out Giovanni will always be a highlight of the overture, but this time, instead of the Don being kinda concious and just leaning onto Leperello, Leporello had Giovanni fully passed out on his back with Giovanni's legs around Leporello's waist
• Giovanni had a manbun.
• Because of said manbun, his wig for the disguise as Ottavio in act 1 kept on falling off constantly, so he had to literally hold it on his head with one hand until he started to make out with Anna. Then, he just yeeted it to the floor
• The same as above went for the hat that was part of the disguise in act 2
• Donna Elvira beating up Giovanni with the veil and buquet she brought as a proof of him trying to marry to her
• Elvira very angrily tearing out all the pages in Leporello's catalogue during the catalogue aria, tearing up individual pages, throwing the small torn up bits into the air like confetti and then sobbing
• Elvira in general just was amazing
• Before La ci darem la mano, a nook in one of the walls opens up into a library and Giovanni is supposed to say his proposal to Zerlina from there. Giovanni tonight was very excited to be in this nook, because he flailed his arms around so much that he ended up knocking down something out of metal, that gave a very loud bang when it landed on the ground
• Zerlina handing Masetto a whip to beat her up during Batti batti o bel Masetto and then proceeding to tie her own wrists to ties from some drapes.
• Masetto hiding behind a changing screen during the short scene before the act 1 finale. He was constantly peeking out at Giovanni trying to seduce Zerlina, so while being polite to Giovanni, Zerlina was frantiaclly gesturing for Masetto to hide
• Ottavio visibly being socially awkward, especially when responding to Leporello to coming to Giovanni's party. Poor dude literally looked at Anna and Elvira like ",out of the three of us, why am I supposed to be the one talking?"
• Giovanni beating up Leporello with Zerlina's whip while trying to blame him for copping a feel on Zerlina
• Leporello carrying a small suitcase with his clothes with him throughout act 2, being ready to leave whenever necessary
• Giovanni calling Leporello back by pretending to have stabbed himself in anguish and when Leporello went to inspect the wound, Giovanni handed him the four ducats to stay
• Zerlina hitting Leporello with the whip from act 1 for beating up Masetto
• Elvira hitting Leporello with the coat he used as a gisguise as Giovanni
• Giovanni practicing his sword moves in front of a mirror during the Graveyard scene
• During the finale feast, Giovanni got himself a bunch of grapes to snack on, but instead he kept on giving grapes to the dancers. Then, he almost deepthroated the whole bunch, but stopped because he had to sing his lines
• Leporello stole himself an entire chicken leg and went to eat it to the edge of the stage, his legs dangling into the orchestra pit. I think a piece of the chicken ended up falling onto some poor musician that was sitting underneath him
• They made the statue for the finale taller and added more draping by which Giovanni can get dragged to hell

I love the walldrawings by contemporary artists. First in a long line of artists, there is Sol LeWitt. I witnessed the execution of several of his drawings in the rooms and staircases of the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag and they fascinated me all.
Then there is Niele Toroni who makes his wall drawings with a single brush and color
and now there is another artist who i admire who have executed a permanent walldrawing, this time at the National Gallery. Yes,…this is permanent and a part of their collection. The last time i had seen  a large walldrawing by Bridget Riley is when she executed one at the Gemeentemuseum in 2012 when she was presented the Sikkens prijs.
An excellent Leperello catalogue was published on that occasion
This beautiful leperello catalogue is available at www.ftn-books.com
Location: Annenberg Court
Spanning a vast 10 x 20 metres, the work comprises coloured discs painted directly onto the surface of the Gallery’s Annenberg Court.
The title, ‘Messengers’, is inspired by a phrase Constable used when referring to clouds, and might also be an allusion to the numerous angels, bearers of news, that we see in the skies of so many National Gallery pictures.
Painted directly onto the wall of the Annenberg Court, this abstract work carries influences from our historic collection over into the 21st century. Throughout art history, harmonies of colour have played a large part in pictorial composition.Taking as a point of departure the paintings of George Seurat, in particular Bathers at Asnières, Bridget Riley’s ‘Messengers’ transforms the Annenberg Court into a great white space in which coloured discs float as clouds drift in the lanes of the sky. By leaving after-images on the viewer’s retina that suggest volume and movement the longer it is perceived, the work becomes a tribute to its artistic predecessors and to the process of looking at art itself.
Bridget Riley (born 1931) has a long-standing relationship with the Gallery; she made copies of paintings in the collection including Jan van Eyck’s Portrait of a Man (Self Portrait?), 1433, as a teenager as part of her portfolio when applying to Goldsmiths College, London, just after the end of the Second World War, and Georges Seurat’s Bathers at Asnières while training as an artist.
Bridget Riley (1931) now a permanent part of the National Gallery building. I love the walldrawings by contemporary artists. First in a long line of artists, there is Sol LeWitt.

“Artist and writer Etel Adnan was born in Beirut, Lebanon, and has lived most of her life in Paris and California. Her paintings, poetry, and accordion books (leperellos), like this one, reflect on the Lebanese Civil War, language, and landscape.” (source: MoMA)

to quote phil collins, “I don’t care anymore”
this faceless host is gonna grab you by the arm and shake your sonatas into the bin and right there and then
the mask the smile the hospitality congeniality find their way back to my skin
it’s a desaturated headshot, it’s a
line of defense a pretense of pretense but the air that, I’ll handle with care
dulcamara in the mirror figaro but queerer commendatore haunting every dream
a shadow creeping up behind me waiting there to bind me gotta have a leperello to hear the screams
les noces but even more discordant*
he’s done with th’asides and the winks now he’ll scream his lungs out and leave no doubt
fake my way through the dance don’t leave shit to chance there’s no choice I’m a lousy performer at best that, I’ll confess
*with apologies to stravinsky, because I enjoy his work, but I have some trauma related to that particular ballet

It fits!! Whew! In my last post I shared pics of making a #slipcase to hold my #leperello #concertina book "How the cow went over the moon" ... I measured a jillion times before I cut the book boards and paper but still I worried because folds and glue add up. The slipcase is 4.5 x 6.5 x 1 and the #concertina is 4.25 inches x 6.25 inches x .75 inches when closed and the book opens out to 4 feet in length. I am so relieved it fits so nicely and slides in and out of the slipcase easily!! Whew! Behind these scenes I've been working on the #printedbook version of "How the cow..." which also includes a second #wordless #poem ... I'm making a print version to amuse my friends and have something they can share with kids if they want to. If you can't amuse friends and entertain kids what's the point?🤷‍♀️ - - #authorartist #artistbook #whimsicalart #wordlessbook #childrensbook #picturebook #householdsurrealism #mentalhealth #wip (at Vancouver, Washington) https://www.instagram.com/p/CZAMuKWvMyV/?utm_medium=tumblr

Made a #slipcase to hold my "How the cow went over the moon" #leperello #concertina #artistbook - if you didn't see my other posts containing my wordless book contents - a cow floats over the moon in a gas bubble... so it's fitting to have a blue bubble pattern #paper covering on the slipcase! 🤣 Yes, I laugh at my own visual jokes...🤣 I constructed the slipcase by hand with book binders board, archival glue and paper. It's 4.5 x 6.5 x 1.5 inches ... will see how it fits the #foldedbook after the case has dried... by my calculations it'll fit but there's always a risk so...wish me luck 🤞 A wonderful #referencebook I use often when #handmaking #books and #boxes is "Books, boxes and portfolios" by Franz Zeier (at Vancouver, Washington) https://www.instagram.com/p/CY9uY6QvhX0/?utm_medium=tumblr
