"Thank you," she signs. She keeps her movements tight, returns her gaze to her chessboard.

Long ago she had stopped trying to speak to others. She'd known enough people who understood her signing to discard her voice entirely, and in years of disuse it had rusted over almost completely. Silent tactician, indeed.

"I won't be late," she signs next. Her days of overrest were long gone, left with the fading memory of the first war, the first time she'd stood on the battlefield with trembling hands and voice.

She feels the compassion, buried under their words. She hears the care they bring, the thought of her, even when she never leaves her tent. It pains her, with the thought of who had been there to care for her in the past. How she'd always needed to be cared for.

She leans her head against her hand and takes a long breath. The chess pieces before her wait, nervous, for her next command.

She pushes a bishop forward, and the opponent's rank shatters.
