Hey give me Winnie origin backstory please. I love that queen.

HELL YEAH I HAVE SO MUCH LORE ON MY STUPID FUR BABY!!!! I CAN AND WILL DIE FOR HER.

So a few things right off the bat: Winnie is not a canon character in TAZ Amnesty. I came up with her on my own. That’s just the name I gave her in TMWCIFTC. I completely pulled that name out of my ass - I heard that Duck had a cat, and I immediately went 

and decided to turn her into a character. I have no clue what her name actually in canon or what she looks like, but boy howdy I came up with some STUFF. I’ll put in a read more, the backstory on Winnie and how I fleshed her out is pretty long. What can I say, I like cats. There are lots of cat pictures under the read more!!!

First: Winnie is short for Eowyn. I have a cat whose nickname is Winnie, but her full name is Arwen, so - Lord of the Rings association, that’s basically it. I have a headcanon that Duck was a fan of the movies growing up, but Brain Word Machine Broke, so he never got around to reading the books. But he was a big enough fan that he named his cat after one of the characters when he found her. (Yes, found. More on that later.)

Then I got to thinking about what kind of cat Winnie was. I didn’t want to make her a point-blank insert of my own cat, so I got to thinking. I used to volunteer at a cage free no-kill cat shelter (if any of y’all reading this live in the Denver area, go to Cat Care Society on 6th Avenue and Sheridan one of these days if you haven’t by now, it’s heavenly), and there was this one big big big BIG boy who I loved with all my heart. 

His name is Indica; he’s a flame point ragdoll/siamese mix, with huge beautiful blue eyes. His head is as big as one of my hands. Those tiles in the picture are twelve inches wide. He’s a fucking huge boy. He was a temporary care cat, meaning his owners were out of town or moving or something and they needed a place for him to stay, so they let him stay at the shelter until their vacation was over or whatever. 

Problem is, they never came back. His owners dropped him off at the shelter before Thanksgiving, and he was still hanging around by MLK day last year. Shelter policy is that temporary care cats can stay at the shelter for one month, before they’re put up for adoption. Thankfully, he got adopted last March, and he went to a good loving home with lots of stairs so he would have a chance to lose some weight. You could put your hand on his belly and press down, and it’d be fucking engulfed. 

Engulfed, I say. He was such a good good soft boy.

But anyway - this cat has been in my heart, mind and soul for over a year now, and when i started thinking about what kind of cat Duck would have, Indica was the first to come to mind. I went and looked up flame point ragdolls and oh boy howdy, they’re the best. They’re so good.

They’re the best. So soft, so sweet. I did more research and found out that cats like flame point ragdolls, Maine Coons, etc etc, are really good therapy cats, because of how sweet and affectionate they can be. They’re incredible animals and I love them to pieces.

But then. I did more research. And these cats are like. Relatively fancy and expensive purebred cats, like holy fucking shit they’re hard to get a hold of. So how did Duck find this beautiful girl? 

The answer: stupid rich people. 

About four or five years ago, Winnie was but a wee kitten, maybe a year old or so. She belonged to some really bougie snobs who took her up to the Kepler Ski Resort on vacation. (Maybe she belonged to Muffy and Winthrop. Who knows.) Problem is, she saw this strange new world to explore, took one look outside, and - as curious kittens are wont to do - fucking bolted. Leo Tarkesian found her scrounging around in the dumpster out back of his store and brought her back to the apartment complex. When nobody came to claim her, he planned on going around town and telling people she was up for adoption, but she immediately escaped Leo’s apartment and ran over to Duck’s. 

When Leo tried to take her back to his apartment, this little baby kitten sunk her teeth and claws into Duck’s shoe and held on for dear life. Duck agreed that maybe she was better off staying with him. Leo cracked a couple jokes about Duck being chosen by her, which Duck wasn’t so amused about. But he fell in love with the cat, and she was already really attached to him, and the rest is history. She and Beacon have a relationship of mutual distrust. At this point, she’s so attuned to Minerva appearing at precisely 6:14 every night that she can tell exactly when Minerva’s around and where she is, even though she can’t see her.

So yeah! That’s everything I have on Winnie at the moment. This was a fun post to write, Vannie, thanks for sending this in!!

hmmmmmmmmmmm I think....leo is more openly romantic. i feel like he’s so unafraid to live his life n shit that he could just not give a damn what people think about him/his relationship. like, he’s in love, and he’ll be damned if he doesn’t show the world with the many photos of him and thacker he has tacked on the wall behind the register!! privately, though, i think thacker is more romantic. like, he’s definitely a little afraid of public opinion (only bc he’s the home-town native who suddenly started hanging around the weirdos at Amnesty Lodge and is now dating the loud, aggressively-himself New Yorker who also is hanging around the weirdos at the Lodge), so when he’s alone with leo the more likely he is to be a little...bolder. he tries to sweep leo off his feet with romantic dinners, movie nights, gifts, etc. it works every time. 

also that whole thing is what i’d consider their relationship pre-canon. post-canon, i think neither of them give a fuck because monsters are real, minerva is In Kepler, and the day is saved so who is honestly gonna give a fuck about the two old men going on romantic walks through the woods or having their fifth dinner date of this week. 

💙: who is more protective? 

once again, pre-canon i think it’s thacker. now, that may sound surprising, given leo canonically can kick ass and has a giant broadsword. but i think the way i view “protective” for their relationship is less about who can save the other’s butt from an abomination. again, in my mind, thacker is the kepler native. people know him, and they trust him. people don’t know leo, when he first shows up. they know he took over the general store and made it look a little nicer and stock better food, sure, but they don’t know much else about him besides that and his city of origin. so the town is a little wary around leo, and rumors probably spark up quickly about his sudden arrival in town, which thacker is very quick to shut down. he doesn’t want leo to feel unwelcome (especially before their relationship gets serious, since he’d like for leo to stay thank you very much), and so when gossip sparks about his beau he very quietly inserts himself into the conversation and assures everyone that leo is a good guy. 

post-canon, i think leo is a little more protective, only because he is terrified of thacker running off again. in the beginning, it manifests as him being overbearing (asking where thacker is, going with thacker to outings he wasn’t necessarily invited too, things like that). but after a very long, very heartfelt conversation, leo backs off. but he’s still trying to help thacker to adjust back to life in kepler, and so he’s careful to make sure thacker’s comfortable and doesn’t feel threatened by anything.

And that’s a wrap! I can’t believe it’s finished! Writing this thing has been such a  journey and I’ve loved doing it. It’s really helped me gain confidence that I can handle this level of writing and really sparked something in me that reminded me just how much I want to be a writer!

This forest is like the Monongahela, only bigger.

The trees are impossible giants—Minerva has to tilt her head back to see where they end, those crowns of branches stretching out to catch the sun.  These trees have a monopoly on sunlight, she thinks.  Barely anything trickles down for the shrubs and ferns, but even those are larger than the plants she remembers in West Virginia—these feathery green leaves are as wide as her palms.

And these trees, they’re wide, too: if Minerva stretched her arms out around one, she would only encompass maybe one-tenth of the circumference.  She knows this, because she tried it this morning at the cottage where she and Duck Newton are staying.  The bark was wet and rough beneath her palms, loose, stringy pieces of bark growing around and around and around each other until they form a wall, history pressed between each layer.  Minerva pressed her face into the trunk, closed her eyes, and breathed the tree in—let her world narrow to the texture and the smell, ancient yet new.

Duck took a picture.  Leo Tarkesian and Sarah Drake have voted it top five best images ever sent in the Chosen Club Group Chat.
