Today’s curiosity: many people know that the Takumars’ “dreaded,” radioactive lens element is the glued pair in the back block, but few have it that only one of these elements is actually radioactive. The picture below shows the rear pair of S-M-C Takumar 1.4/50 waiting to be re-glued. The image is not colored, the thorium lens element really has that color compared to the thorium-free one. Close up everything is more interesting. 🔍 I used to have an article about re-gluing glued lens elements (hispan.hu/lencsetag-ragasztas), and since then I have encountered numerous such errors. One typical case is when the factory glue gets air pretty slowly from the outside. This may appear "from afar" to opalescent at the edges of the lens element, but on closer inspection the tiny bubbles making their way are clearly visible. This affects not only vintage but also modern lenses. The case of Altix bayonet optics is troublesome because it is a fairly rare connection for which no adapters are produced at all. In a previous article I showed you how to make an Altix adapter for Sony NEX at home (➡️ hispan.hu/altix-nex-konverter), but if you are looking for a more specific solution and the optics themselves are worth the effort, then you can change the Altix mount to something more popular. I did the same with this 3.5/90 MOG Telefogar, which has an amazingly beautiful image. The three small tabs of the Altix bayonet must be removed and a simple M39-M42 adapter ring can be placed on the back of the optics (and in this case can be fitted precisely and permanently with epoxy). The flange focal distance allowes the infinite focus and the lens now has a standard M42 connection. Zeiss Kipronars are the most expensive projection lenses nowadays because of their the extreme swirly backgrounds and large image circles. This 1.9/140 Kipronar got a complete overhaul. The aluminium part is polished, the glasses are cleaned and get new anti-reflective coating on the sides, and the inner side of the lens body also get a non-reflective dark paiting.
