Dear Gen X:
You're already rolling your eyes, but that's okay. Hey, I'm from the Gen X/Millennial cusp and I think I speak for a lot of us X-lennials when I say "thanks."
You're our elder siblings, elder cousins, the older kids from around the neighborhood, and we all thought you were cool. And you taught us what it is to be "cool" whether you knew it or not.
You taught us was good music actually was--hat you can listen to the radio, sure, but you have to look harder for the good shit. You took us to record stores before they all closed. You taught us that punk was not dead. We learned about music because you played it and we overheard it. We learned about punk and New Wave and goth rock from you. It was because of you that we knew who Curt Kobain was and why it was so sad that he died. We stole your band shirts a lot. We wore your hand-me-downs but we stole your band shirts too (sorry).
You made skateboarding cool. Lots of broken arms thanks to you guys. You made not caring what other people thought of you okay. You made self-expression something worthwhile--probably because everyone had written you off, so who's going to fucking stop you screaming into the void?
You fucking scared adults--how cool was that? As a kid who was always being told what to do, to see someone who could say "Nah" or "Whatever" without fear was amazing. Like, holy shit, you guys are creative as fuck.
You fed us when we were latchkey kids together. Mom trusted you with the key so you'd be there when we got home. You taught us how to fend for ourselves in the kitchen when Mom and Dad wouldn't be home until late. You had to babysit us whether you liked it or not and we put you through a lot of shit, but thanks for only making our lives a little shitty.
We learned sarcasm and dark humor and deadpan deliveries from you. We learned from you that the key is under the mat and the pain is under the smirk. You're how we got Daria and "meh."
In the 90s, when some of Gen X was getting rich off the dot-com boom, most of you weren't. So you understood us and the rest of the Millennials in 2008 when the economy went tits up. You'd already taught a lot of us to be cynical and skeptical about wealth and money anyway.
So, listen: thanks. The world's so fucked up. We know it now. The problems you had before are problems you have again, somehow. The Boomers don't even acknowledge the anxiety you lived with when you were young. And you knew how fucked up things were back then but you just told us that we were playing with that unplugged player 2 controller instead of freaking us out. You already knew that the world was fucked and things had to change. Thanks for taking care of us like that.
What I'm trying to say is that I've got your metaphorical generational back. I'm not that much younger than the youngest cohort of Gen X. And a lot of us are in similar situations as you. They told your generation that you were worthless they sold my generation a store's worth of lies.
Hey least you taught us how to flip it all a middle finger without changing our expression.
Love(?),
Some X-lennial
Gen x: the loser do nothing generation
Pfft, says you.
I mean, yeah, we did sit on our assess and get intoxicated every weekend, but what else were we supposed to do? Our parents weren't around and were too stressed to comfort us. The authority figures just saw us as trouble. I'm a loser baby so why don't you kill me.
Apathy. Ennui. Our friends dying overseas in pointless military action. Our friends dying close to home because typical abled people didn't like how they lived.
The songs Illusion and Beloved by VNV Nation, dedicated to a Goth teen in the UK who was murdered literally just for being Goth. The murders of people who were different, on the edge fringe, beyond, other, divergent.
A small generation growing smaller. The Offspring wrote songs about it.
We were losers who could do nothing. The government, the cops, they were never on our side. We lost. They made us stop caring enough about losing. And we did nothing.
So now it's time to rise up, and help the generation of our children take back what we lost.
I've got my lighter and my leather jacket. I smoke weed and I know things.

So ok yeah we don't know each other IRL. It's unlikely we'd just bump into each other. And full disclosure, yep, I've been here long enough to have first seen you on a Spicy Gifset from SexySexAndSuch (RIP old Tumblr). But you've caused me to rethink my privilege as a cishet, to learn about gender, and to explore kink safely. My timeline is always brightened by you and I'm very VERY glad to "have met" you. Your upcoming 30th is fucking rad & makes this fossil of a X-lennial happy too.
I'm wicked glad to hear that you've enjoyed my online presence for so long and that it's instigated some good self learning and explorations!
I'm looking forward to my 30's and am hoping they bring positive change and more mental stability.

My Z-Lennial sibling-in-law is downstairs getting introduce to The Old Memes by my partner and their big sister. They were on 'End of Ze World' when I went by. Now the strains of "Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny" are floating upstairs.
This is adorable.

In the manga he was wearing the fuck out of those 1970s fuckin pants and silk scarves and suit jackets and in the ovas he was wearing the fuck out of the trench coat and the high waisted pleated pants and he had those lash extensions and the whole time with the bob/mullet hybrid and pencil sharpened sideburns and THIS is where they went from there?
Tumblr media
I mean I’ve only read the manga and watched the 90/80s ovas so maybe there was some kind of natural progression but who is that. Who is this. That is not my Ryo Asuka. That is some insufferable z-lennial tiktokker. Googling “ryo asuka” gives you hundreds of images of this bowlcutted ersatz motherfucker instead of the real one. You can tell just looking at him that it’s satan himself. And every picture I see of this thing is wearing the same coat and lbr it’s more like it’s wearing him they just removed all the swag. Every last drop. And really the biggest crime of it all is that they didn’t even have the courage to rock with the sideburns. You have to rock with the sideburns. Is nothing sacred
I can't really pass any kind of real judgement on crybaby because I have not watched it myself but I can definitively say that what they did to ryo just visually is a fucking tragedy on the scale of the ending of the actual story

i was supposed to describe my research in thirty seconds in lay terms and went with "so you know the fish transport tube that's been a meme lately? so imagine some guy jumps into the river and stabs the person who's loading the fish into the tube—i'm studying what kind of knife he used and where he stabbed them"
in totally unrelated news i'm the favourite researcher for the work study kids to follow around

I just realized that I've never actually listened to a Taylor Swift album, and the most exposure I've had to her songs were them popping up on a music channel and me going "meh, why not" and then doing something else while the songs played.
Makes me think about songs and singers that you just interact with briefly because you wouldn't otherwise care that much.
This post brought to you by my casually watching MTV Live and every so often getting a video that I don't realize is Taylor Swift and just "Sure, why not, might be fun" which is a fairly Xennial mindset. Or is it X-lennial now?

Hearing a teenager say “Gosh I wish I’d lived in the 80s; I would have loved Reagan!” is sort of like hearing someone of my generation say, “Gosh I wish I’d lived in the 70s; I would have loved Nixon!”

Gen X: the key is under the mat and the pain is under the smirk.
soooo today i learned that back in the early 90s, coca cola tried making this thing called “ok soda” as a marketing stunt to beat out pepsi since they had way more of a hold on the “younger/rebellious” generation at the time, and their way of doing that was naming it “ok soda” so that they could copyright the word “ok”, the most popular word in the world, and at the same time brand it as an…ironic soda??? like the whole thing with it was that they tried to brand ok soda as a counterculture soda but instead of making it about typical 90s RADICAL EXTREME!!! fodder the theme of it was uh. unsettling capitalist brutalist dystopia. instead of being bright and colorful the color scheme was only stark whites, grays and reds and the cans looked like this. bold shapes and labels stating ominous, robotic things with a figure always staring dead into you on the front, no coca cola branding on it at all.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
sometimes there would be “prize cans” of this stuff where instead of having soda inside it there would be hats. and they didn’t sell this option in boxes by the way they just put prize cans in random vending machines. and put like 25 cents in it so hey. you could get an actual soda that isn’t just hats. maybe.
Tumblr media
did i mention that this soda also had a fucking MANIFESTO??? because yeah it sure had that printed on some cans and it goes as follows
Tumblr media
and there’s these things called “coincidences”, which… yeah it doesn’t make it sound any less ominous
Tumblr media
and you might be wondering how the soda itself tastes like does it taste good? ok? well apparently it was just a regular “citric” tasting soda but somehow they fucked it up so bad that it was compared to “carbonated tree sap”, and instead of trying to make the drink taste better they included that it tasted like shit, INTO THE ADVERTISING SCHEME ITSELF. they would literally advertise that it tasted like ass as a part of the ironic marketing, no i am not kidding.
but if you thought that’s where it ended there’s one more curveball and without any exaggeration, you will not expect what i am about to tell you.
take a look at this guy.
Tumblr media
this guy is the “face” of ok soda, as in he was printed on the most cans and technically served as a mascot of sorts for the entire thing. his face was a major part of the branding, and this design for the cans was one of if not the most common.
okay. cool. no issue there right?
take a guess on who this guy is based off of.
the artist’s coworker? a generic guy? the artist himself? a relative? some random reference model they hired?
CHARLES MANSON. YES, THIS IS REAL. MEANING FOR A BRIEF MOMENT IN TIME, CHARLES MANSON’S FACE WAS USED AS A MEANS TO SELL COCA COLA.
Tumblr media
the lead artist himself has even come forward to say this is the case. and now you may be asking wait. how’d he do this? how’d he possibly get away with this, years after the crimes had been committed?
well according to him, it was simple. apparently none of the contracts he signed said anything against putting a mass murderer on the can. so. there’s THAT.
unfortunately or fortunately depending on how you look at it, ok soda never really caught on since *surprise surprise!* teens really don’t want to buy soda that looks like a brutalist art museum, and it never had a wide release so it was only a thing for like two years between 1993 and 1995. but from what i’ve heard there’s still people who are giving this soda a small modern following, collecting all the cans and merchandise and even coming up with stand in recipes for the soda formula itself.
so yeah! that was ok soda.
what the fuck

i kinda think it depends on where in gen z you fall too. i see ideas like that more prevalently in like later half of gen z. the older gen z and z-lennials arent immune to it, but i dont see it as much with them. also i unfortunately am seeing gen alpha kids doing it too (theyre only abt 13 now but ive seen some say some dumb stuff) which i guess kinda correlates to the whole coming out during the pandemic
oh for sure

The true Z-lennial experience is being knowledgeable on all the millennial things and 90’s kids things because of out of touch teachers and parents that still show all the movies/books/shows/songs/references that were popular 5 years prior and having 17 year olds be “nostalgic” over Kim possible and that’s so raven.
