So my parents when I was young, decided that the church was not adhering to the doctrine set up by the bible and Joseph Smith, came to the conclusion that the LDS church was apostate and decided to take us out of regular church and give us an absolutely insane homeschool version of Mormanism

This is a non comprehensive list of Stuff I Was Taught As Fact

-That back in biblical times, instead of the sun we had a configuration of planets close to earth (Saturn, Venus and Mars) that gave the earth it light and heat. Additionally this changed the gravity and that's why Adam And Eve lived for so long

-Also that the new star that appeared when Jesus was born was the Sun replacing the Configuration of Planets

-Speaking of Jesus they also believed he was a Rich Scholar Not a Poor Carpenter

-That the Second Coming was going to be cause by this configuration of planets coming back into Earth's proximity and shooting cosmic lightning at us

-They also taught us that the grand canyon was caused by cosmic lightning not erosion

- That every living thing, plants and animals were all undergoing a test on earth just like humans albeit with different requirements and commandments

-That the Planet Earth was Also Alive and was also undergoing a similar test. Also the Noah's flood was the Earth getting baptized

-There are no Laws of Nature, only Habits of Nature

- That if the Church were being run properly, God through the Leadership would pick everybody's spouse

-That the reason people were Gay/Trans were because they were possessed

redesigns of some old ocs! still kinda WIP but i like the direction they're heading. i don't really have in-depth lore/backstories yet but here's what ive got so far:

The Group:

A bunch of Serpentine who -through means unknown at this time- can shapeshift into humans... mostly. There's still some snake features but they can blend in well enough.

Each left or were banished from their respective tribes for one reason or another. Depending on timelines, the Merge may have further disconnected them from their tribes.

"Found family" but the family they found is a bunch of lunatics.

They all fall under that category of "is hundreds of years old, but look in their 20s" lmfao.

Dunno what they're up to in their day to day life besides eating and sleeping and avoiding arrest.

Xyla:

Anacondrai

Likes to toy with people, and LOVES messing with her friends but they're used to it for the most part.

Conveniently, uh, wasn't eaten by Pythor lmao. Maybe she was banished from the tribe before they were entombed.

Likes to hunt and eat people, but hates when it's called cannibalism cuz she's "technically a snake, sooo 😒"

Can turn invisible, which is very useful for the aforementioned hunting.

Not really into "normal" food can still consume it if necessary.

Most likely to get arrested, or would be if she couldn't turn invisible.

Bek (Honorable Mention):

Whatever species the Great Devourer was lmfao.

Peak emo boy vibes except he's legit insane. Was never part of a tribe.

Besties with Xyla. Might be besties with benefits, either way they're really close.

They're both wanted in at least 4 realms for an assortment of crimes (kidnapping people and eating them).

More of strict carnivore, gets sick if he has to eat non-meat too often.

2nd Most likely to get arrested.

Arabella:

Fangpyre

Not as openly antagonistic as Xyla, but can be a bitch when she wants to be.

Basically a vampire-idol LARPer, has an umbrella whenever the sun is out and can sing fairly well.

Is kinda frail/sickly. Not in the best physical condition. Likely abandoned by the other Fangpyre due to this.

Can turn people/objects into snakes via bite. Likes to threaten people with this to scare 'em off.

Likes ordering Goro around lmao, though it's usually simple stuff like errands or chores. They're best friends but...... complicated.

Picky eater, but likes candy and finger foods.

Least likely to get arrested 'cause she can just turn the cops into snakes lmfao.

Goro:

Constrictai

Left the tribe to be with Arabella. She helped him when they were kids and he latched onto her.

He's a little bit... extremely obsessed with everything about her in every way. They're inseparable (they should be separated).

Big puppy vibes but also rabid dog in certain scenarios (if something bad happened to Arabella). Clingly/Simpy/Spineless/you get the idea.

Would be shy/introverted otherwise.

Can burrow or constrict people.

Can and will eat trash, he doesn't give a shit.

Hasn't been arrested..... yet.

If you know him well a tell that he has is he will make a point to NOT fidget with his glasses because he feels like that WOULD be a tell but. He always fidgets with his glasses so it is actually notable when he doesn’t for an extended period of time. He also def does the thing where his eyes look up while he is thinking of the lie. -

🌙 MOON - what is your oc's greatest wish? how far are they willing to go for it? Mark wants a lot of things right now. His greatest wish though… hmm. IDK I’m indecisive. Have a bunch: -To be free of Julius -To make Sampson happy - which means he has to let him go. -To be able to let Sampson go - he is kind of worried how he’s gonna react when he actually gets to that point. He’s trying not to think about it. -Someone, just one person, to both know him very deeply and love him deeply. Someone who also believes he is good, and someone he believes is good as well. He does not want to stop caring.

He’s willing to go quite far because they are all interrelated and, the only things he has to lose are the hope for those wishes. So, so long as it won’t ruin one of the above, he would do a lot and risk a lot. He has a lot of resolve and will certainly push himself beyond his limits. -

🙊 SPEAK-NO-EVIL - what is something your oc will refuse to stay quiet about? Uhm. He’s quite willing to stay quiet for his own safety buuuuuuut probably someone wantonly attempting to kill innocent humans he could not stand for, he would HAVE to try to do something to stop it, and also his hatred of Sabbat - he would not accept someone saying the Sabbat aren’t so bad. Which sucks, but that was his experience.

Other than being informed of stuff that would mean he’s fucked (‘Julius knows you want to kill him” for example), it would be someone he cares about and trusts telling him that Sampson was right, he’s just pretending to care and there isn’t hope for him, that he’s not capable of really loving anyone anymore. :( He’s holding on to hope of true love, ok??? -

All of the above and more. Mark has become kind of arrogant - his sire makes him close to untouchable politically, and he’s also just arrogant due to his Beast’s influence + Julius’s influence (Julius’s fatal flaw is his arrogance). And he is also desperate. Teehee. -

I think i had actually answered this one before but I can’t be bothered to find it and my answer wasn’t that good… because it’s still not good. I DONT KNOW. Mark’s situation is so tough and I’m doing my best to RP him accurately while making the best decisions for survival. I think I would tell him that he’s gotta keep his hunger managed, dammit, do NOT let yourself get hungry or it’s going to go really bad. I would also give him the advice that he should be really, really careful about the nosferatu on his territory cause while he’s being careful already i OOC know it is even more dangerous than he realizes. Otherwise. IDK. -

💔 BROKEN HEART - what could their partner do that would absolutely break their heart? HEEEEEEEEHEEEEEEEEEEEEEE Yeas. this is a funn question. Okay. So Mark is gonna have a lot of baggage that his next boyfriend would have to navigate. Other than something like I wrote above about the worst thing he could hear from someone, which would of course break his heart… a partner saying that he took advantage of Mark opening up would break his heart too - sharing his secrets with someone else for gain. Or really just sharing things about Mark that he keeps private without his consent would really hurt his trust due to what he’s been through. Or his partner beginning to stop caring about humanity/think little of kine, cause then Mark would really struggle with which conviction he should follow…

i am an insane person and have been doing it all via carrd pages even tho thats a horrible idea.

it's a work in progress still, but the most complicated one (love and war) is nearly done! i just need to add the raiders and farmers to the people tab, and draw icons. its best viewed on desktop! my favorite part is that on places, theres an actual map, and you can click on the labels to learn more about the place - i recommend following the trail from the cabin, it tells some of the story.

extra-normal: almost everyone has a third eye on their forehead which allows them to see into a physical manifestation of their mind called the "second sight." vonnie is a nurse who works in a hospital ward dedicated to third eye injuries, and is particularly attached to a patient named avalon who is blinded and trapped in her second sight. she also works with a few regular volunteers, a trio of young friends (or perhaps lovers???) - daisy, who has no third eye; august, who is blinded in one of his normal eyes and thus has hallucinations and seizures related to his second sight; and tripp, who believes she's able to see into other people's minds.

living dead: the plot on this one is still not really my focus right now. theres a cool tv head oc named jacob, though. and a currently unnamed mad scientist.

pressed flowers: currently remaking this whole concept so anything ive posted here before is pretty much outdated!! now the story is this: theodora and oliver were childhood sweethearts, until teddie washed up dead on the beach. oliver still saw her ghost for a few years, but now that he's grown up and finally healing and dating a new girl named jessica - teddie shows up again and reveals that she was actually murdered. and the killer is on the loose, hunting again.

the mermaid's blade: this one i'm not gonna go into because i'm literally gonna try and film a lot of it next semester so y'all will hopefully be seeing it in that format soon enough 👁👁

so fun story, I'm a synesthete. I have a couple of forms of synesthesia (number form, auditory-tactile), but one allows to me to pick up on micro behaviors of people and perceive a color based off of it. Put simply- people have 'color' in my eyes. And I see them! Hence, colorseeingchick.

U: Share three of your favorite fic writers and why you like them so much. oh fuck yeah well i got to rave about three homies here but i will gladly do three more !!!!

1. @reveriesofawriter aka meghna. i think that meghna is just inside the HEADS of the characters she writes. this woman’s jalex is a threat to my personal wellbeing (no surprise there since meghna is hell bent on destroying me). truly i think there is something EXTREMELY essential to be said for the way meghna writes which is like, witty realistic compelling dialogue followed by short lines of description that literally punch you in the face. i can’t actually think about the starlight fic because i will cry but wow. also i know this is a question about fic but i have to add that meghna is a phenomenal poet and in general she wrangles the english language like no one else. she can create these stunning images and pull PRIMAL emotions out of you that you didn’t even think you were capable of experiencing. she will really just express the most beautiful sentiments in the world and we are all lucky enough to exist alongside her!!!! and have you SEEN the pictures she takes this is just a love letter to meghna i need to move on but wow i love meghna

2. @kaleidoscopeminds aka meg. ohhhhh my goodness. maybe i’m a LITTLE biased because meg has written not one but TWO fics specifically for me and the love i feel for her would flood oceans. but wow meg’s writing. it is INFUSED with love. it’s just got this sparkle! this glimmer!!! this !!! i don’t know how to explain it other than it’s just full of love!!! NOT just the fics she wrote for me but her writing in general it’s so sweet and so clever and CHARMING it’s charming that was the word i needed. yes. meg’s writing is absolutely charming i mean have you READ the flatmate arrangement. it just feels so good. it’s like someone sprinkled fairy dust over real life so like? it’s still decidedly real life but it has this extra something. now i will admit i think i’ve only ever read fluff by meg YES i know it’s criminal and insane i haven’t read ballet fic i’m getting to it okay but man she is so good at it. so in conclusion i love meg and would die for her

3. @allsassnoclass aka hazel. i don’t think i’ve ever met anyone who is as thoughtful and intentional with her words as hazel is!! and i really REALLY really admire that about her because if anything i write ever has any kind of symbolism or subtext it is always a happy accident but hazel, man, she is so smart with it. (LIE TO ME FIC ANYONE?????) also her writing is just full of emotion which, again, highly admire. and!!! she’s got all these BRILLIANT ideas and then she actually writes them which!!!! i don’t know i just feel like hazel represents so many things about writing that i’ve never thought were my particular strengths which im NOT trying to say as a way of being like woe is me i just mean like......she makes me want to be a better writer. because she is so good at it. and she explores all these different universes and these different iterations of characters and she’s always like diving into their psyches and being like Alright What Seems To Be The Problem Here and it’s just !!! it’s amazing. she’s amazing. so yeah. i love hazel have i mentioned that i love hazel

what should i read 4 arthurian legend idk where to start

i think the best two starting options involve the same strategy of “pick a knight you like the most and consume all the content you can find on them until you get bored/think of another knight and repeat” and its as simple as “do you want to start with sir gawain or do you not know who you want to start with.”

sir gawain i think is the best starting knight if you wanna go the route of reading as much as u can about one and moving on, since theres a LOT of varied content and hes just in a lot. hes important! anyways the first recommendation i have to start with is Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. its a wonderful piece of poetry about a homoerotic beheading game, getting a movie this summer! its fucking gorgeous and a really good introduction if youve never read this old of texts before. i have a few different links so you can take your pick of what you prefer :-)

heres it in the original middle english, its beautiful and if you get the beat down sounds fucking gorgeous but i understand how hard it is to get through if youve never read through it before.

lou recomends Raffels translation above all others which i kinda have to agree with. heres part one and heres part two of that.

and the other link i have directly on hand atm is tolkiens translation which ive skimmed before and it seems really solid.

if you dont want to start with a short and tender christmas party, consider another text most arthuriana fans will consider a must read. its a bit more intimidating than sgatgks poetry but like. hey. its Sir Malory’s Le Morte D’arthur.

this is more on the level of most of the story things youll find for arthuriana and a good starting point to get an overview of a lot of major plot points and characters that show up time and time again in the legends, all of the major knights are covered through malory’s own spin on them and he tries to cover a lot of older tales in his weird fanfiction.

the text can be weird ESPECIALLY if you arent used to middle english since he …. used some weird as fuck words? even for the time. but thats malory.

I highly recommend, if you can get a copy, Kieth Baines modern retelling of Le Morte, it rewords things to make more sense to those used to a more modern prose and while it takes out some of the nuance of some scenes, its way easier to pick up and read. were working on a full scan of it atm actually but the book of arthur is up in our shared drive :-) ill shove a link down here for u

heres the first bit of baines rendition. honestly if u can find a copy for cheap grab it is a fun time

heres the pdf i use for the full text, warning for how weird its structured? its long paragraphs with no quotes around text but if you have no problems with that go for it. heres book one and heres book two.

from there, theres a ton of different options you can follow, but again i think the least overwhelming way to go about it is pick a knight you like and read whatever seems fun that has them in it !

best choices include gawain again, the marriage of sir gawain and dame ragnelle is fun, l’atre perilleux is so fucking wild and just a fun time, the turke and sir gawain has gawain playing tennis? like what more do you need

lancelot has a decent collection of old stories including the entire vulgate cycle (my favorite piece of arthurian lit, im working on scanning the entire english translation ;-)), lancelot and the hart with the white foot, though i havent been able to find a FULL translation, is wonderful and with that the lancelot collection of old stories is a lot of fun the dutch loved him, if you have like 10 bucks to spare, Lancelot and the lord of the distant isles is on amazon for cheap and retells the book of galehaut section of the vulgate and its . so good. please care about galehaut.

tristan as wild as he is is also a really good choice for how popular the Tristan and Isolde legend was in europe. you can find a ton of versions of it, though i prefer the german one by gottfried von strassburg, another amazing one is the povest o’tryschane which is a slavic take on the legend that weirdly throws sections of the vulgate and some italian romances in? i adore it either way.

uhmmm some more off the cuff recommendations include Troyes four romances and also Perceval. as much as i bully troyes knight of the cart, knight of the lion, and knight of the grail are some of my favorite words. skip cliges if youre doing that though it sucks so bad. troyes hated his version of tristan and isolde so much he wrote cliges. that alone should keep you from it. eric and enide is ok but eric sucks SO HARD. i hate that bitch.

more modern but tennysons Idylls of the king? fucking stellar. i recently got a copy and its really gorgeous poetry. kinda like le morte in having a good overview of key events in the texts and some notable characters so this works as a good jumping off point

and finally one i cant really speak on much due to my preference of the romances, but i have many good friends who say the welsh sources are REALLY REALLY good and worth checking out :-) the mabinogion mainly, but a lot of the scattered poetry is really fun!

Emile Sanders (formerly Picani):

Curly medium golden mahogany brown hair and sky blue eyes, subtly tanned skin covered in freckles, red framed rounded glasses, likes dressing like a cartoon character or just wearing cartoon merch (his prized possession is his Mabel pines jumper) but wears a brown cardigan over a white button down shirt with a pink necktie when he goes to work

A big goofball that has a lot of love to give, but he still knows when to be more subdued and calm and when to activate “serious picani”. He’s always loved helping people work through their issues which is why he’s a therapist

Especially adores Remy and respects that they’re discovering themself and exploring new possibilities. He knows from experience how tough that is and how much of a challenge it can be

Was adopted at age three after his parents were busted for child abuse and heavy drug addiction. It took quite some time for him to come out of his shell but Emile and Thomas were nothing but patient and loving and kind. He still has a lot of trust issues but he knows he can trust his family

Will never admit it now but became insanely jealous when remy was adopted into the family. He did not want a brother because he knew that meant he was being replaced and he wasn’t loved anymore

Eventually Thomas and Emile sat him down and they all talked through it and assured Anton that he was still loved and he was not being replaced

It still took a very long time for Anton to trust Remy, even if he was only a baby

His heart was won over when Remy said his first word to him

All he said was “no” but Anton admired his defiant spirit

Shoulder length hair dyed dark purple at the roots that fades into magenta at the ends (hair colour changes periodically depending on what it feels like having), chocolate brown eyes, fairly dark skinned but not heavily so, gender expression changes at the drop of a hat but it often wears leather, skirts, beanies, and a heck ton of earrings (when it turns eighteen it starts getting a lot of different piercings like angel bites, nostril, and industrial piercings, etc) (that’s worth noting)

Almost always sarcastic but that’s its way of showing love really. It’s a helluva punk that can and will fight anyone to the death if they deserve it (or if they hurt someone Remy likes). It’s actually a huge nerd but doesnt usually show that side of itself. It loves reading, watching shows like doctor who, and doing puzzles with Logan

Was diagnosed with adhd after Emile noticed it experienced similar symptoms for quite a while

Was adopted by Thomas and Emile when it was a baby (and Anton was four), having been found by Emile when it was left in a box in an alleyway, which was a long and complicated process but one hundred percent worth it

It has a trio of male rats named Holmes, Watson, and Splinter. Thomas was a bit reluctant to let it adopt rats but they all went to a rat breeder and when Thomas saw them all and even held one he realised it wasn’t so bad and they were actually kinda cute

When it was nine years old, it nearly died in a nasty hit and run. A truck had swerved into it when it was by the side of the road. It was fine after a lengthy recovery except it had to use a wheelchair after some spinal cord damage left it immobilised from the waist down. The driver was never identified

It probably wasn’t a coincidence that this event occurred not long after remy started talking about how much it loved boys just as much as it loved girls, but that teas a bit too hot for this post

She met warren at a pride event with Logan and Patton, and it was actually Patton who met him first (although at the time he went by a different name and didnt know he was trans yet) and then introduced him to the others

They actually talked about adopting a child long before even considering marriage. Although they realised it would look better to adoption agencies if they were married, and that was the main reason they even went through all of that

Has been dealing with OCD her whole life, and sometimes it gets particularly bad (especially the intrusive thoughts) but she has a therapist and psychiatrist she sees somewhat regularly

She runs her own coffee shop called Real Bean Café and it does fairly well. She’s always thinking about how she can improve her business

chess grew up in her native community outside of arizona.

when she was eleven, her aunt, uncle, and cousin moved away after getting promoted, and chess’ parents followed suit and moved to phoenix to try and make it.

unfortunately, after only a year, they lost their jobs and were forced to trade their small apartment for a caravan in a trailer park outside the city.

chess was mocked and bullied at school for this, as well as the fact that she had an incredible memory and was able to outshine most of her classmates

when she turned fourteen, her parents simply gave up, and turned to drugs and alcohol, constantly ignoring and dismissing chess

one day in november, chess returned home to an entirely empty trailer, with a note on the fridge simply reading ‘there’s food in the freezer, back soon.’ 

they never came back.

in the three months of waiting for them and fending for herself, she began pickpocketing in central phoenix to make money

she discovered a talent for it, and in turn, a love for the adrenaline rush it brought her

this escalated to the point of snatching watches and jewelry

this unfortunately brought attention to her, and combined with the fact the trailer park manager hadn’t seen her parents in months, the police showed up at her doorstep

this forced her to go on the run and live on the streets of phoenix as a 16yr old girl

at some point, she got too cocky, and landed herself a two month stint in juvie when she broke the nose of the cop who tried to arrest her

when she was released, she ran again, this time to sedona

while there, she met aspen ( @aspenpalmer​ ) and it was seemingly love at first sight

the two of them travelled the country together, eventually ending up in new york

new york:

they ran into a gang of grifters and through them joined an underground fight club

she loved it, loved the thrill of it, and was happy with her life and her friends and her girlfriend

unfortunately, this is when things went south -

one night when chess was practicing alone, the police raided the place

chess was able to alert the others and they got away on time

when they brought chess in for questioning, she was offered a lighter sentence in exchange for the others’ names

chess, used to fending for herself and only having herself to rely on, gave them up to avoid a heavy sentence

once released from her month long sentence, she found another fight club from her old contacts and rejoined

this time, she pushed herself too hard, guilty for giving up her friends, and ending up seriously injuring herself

enter chess’ aunt, who managed to track her down when she was admitted to a hospital - her aunt turned out to be a successful ny lawyer, and also part time spy recruiter for agencies 

she brought chess back to her home in richmond and trained her alongside her cousin to get into gallagher

now:

at 22, chess’ aunt pulls some strings and gets chess enrolled at gallagher.

she’s not incredibly happy about it - hates the idea of it all, the uniforms, the end goal of working for the government, the classes, but she does it for her aunt

and it’s also her only prospect for the future

she also, unfortunately, will come face to face with aspen for the first time since the betrayal, so that’ll mess stuff up for her a little.

she’s a very abrasive person - she’s blunt, standoffish, and generally rather aggressive

this is a result of her fending for herself since she was 14

if you’re nice to her, she’ll def try to figure out what you want from her

she has an insanely accurate memory, and excels in recollection-based classes, but in other things she’s not so great

she’s a skilled fighter from her days in the ring, so be warned if you piss her off

she has undiagnosed ADHD so she struggles with focusing in classes

she really likes vintage things, like film photography and records, but that’s a recent discovery since living with her aunt

her style could be described as an edgier stevie nicks? think dark florals, ripped jeans, lots of chunky jewelry ( most of which is stolen, lbr ) and heavy boots

loves her music and her playlists, and if ur super close to her she’ll make u one :)

wanted connections.

family friend ― this person would have ties with chess’ aunt, and would have been asked to help chess integrate with the school and figure out her classes. could be excited to help her or angry about being saddled with a babysitting job, we can figure it out!

ray of sunshine ― since chess is a very quiet/reserved person, i can imagine someone trying to befriend and get to know her - chess is probably uncomfortable, but doesn’t want to hurt their feelings, so she tolerates them. possibly make chess open up to them over time?

instant dislike ― something happens where they just instantly don’t like each other. maybe your character is a bit of a snob and not happy that a thief/runaway is being trained at gallagher, maybe they got into a fight with her in the first few weeks.

misery loves company ― chess doesn’t want to be here, and can often be found sulking somewhere about it. maybe your character doesn’t either, or simply has their own issues and likes having someone to be grumpy with.

tutor ― chess needs help in her classes. while she’s generally really smart and has a great memory, she’s pretty undisciplined and needs help training. this connection could also help her figure out what major she wants to be.

ex’s friend ― so chess majorly betrayed aspen by giving her up to the cops, and if your character is close with aspen, they probably know what chess did and hate her for it. give me angst!

new york connections ― in a world of thieves and spies, there are bound to be a few crossed wires, so if your character was in new york (and potentially a criminal) roughly three/four years ago and would have known chess, lemme know!

arizona connections ― less likely, but if your character grew up/spent time in phoenix/sedona growing up/as a teenager, let me know!!

CHAPTER 35: Power Cut

 As the line clicked, the lights flickered again. As if on cue, Pearl's phone buzzed, warning her that she only had 5% battery left.

"Oh boy," she said, more to herself, and got her charger. She plugged it in and then awkwardly sat on the floor next to the plug, since she wasn't really going to abandon her phone.

Hope Rose is okay.

She decided to text Amethyst.

Hey, you up to much?

  Amethyst took a couple of minutes to respond.

Ya, just finished up looking over notes. I'm free now, tho

  Awesome! Proud of you! Do you want to call? The lights over here keep flickering and I'm a bit spooked, wouldn't mind some company.

  Aw, yea, sure. I'm here for you. Just lemme know when.         

  About now, if that's okay?

 Amethyst called her then, "Hey," she said as Pearl picked up. "You'll never guess where I've actually been all day."

 "Hey! So, where have you been all day? At home, studying, by any chance?"

 "Well, I spent half of it at school. Lazuli ran some English revision session thing she emailed me about, and no one else showed up. It was actually... really good? I was even sober for it. She's caught me high before."

 "Oh hey, that's really good! Was it productive? Who knew Lazuli had it in her to be actually helpful," Pearl said, laughing, slightly embarrassed - since it was a studying session she'd missed, and in fact, hadn't even known about.

 "Yeah! It was insane! She even rapped at me in iambic parameter, which was weird as hell but surprisingly... helpful? Anyway, I was real surprised you didn't show up."

 "Yeah, I... must've missed the email," Pearl said, putting the phone on speaker and navigating to the email app. "Wait, I can't even see if I got it at all. Could be in spam? I don't know." Her phone flashed another warning at her as the lights went out. Pearl gasped, but a split second later, the lights came on again. "Oh god. The lights are doing the thing again. There isn't gonna be actual demons here, is there? Also, my phone is running low on battery, so that's fun."

 "NOOO! You said! What's happening over there? Is Quartz's place haunted?"

 "I don't know." Pearl shuddered. "I hope not. Like, I don't really... believe in ghosts and all that supernatural shit. And this didn't happen yesterday."

 "Huh. Maybe something is up with your lightbulb. Get that guy you're living with to take a look if he's good with that kinda stuff?"

 Pearl hesitated for a long moment.

"Uh. I haven't... really talked to Greg yet. It's kinda really awkward."

 "What? But, dude! You live with him. He's okay. Quartz likes him so he's got to be safe and everything, right?"

 Pearl's shoulders slumped. "I guess," she said. "It's just... weird, ya know? I mean, me and Rose used to be... dating, I guess."

 "So? That doesn't mean you can't try and get along. I get along with Quartz, don't I? And we... did things, I guess?"

 "Well, yeah, but she's your teacher! Our teacher. I don't know. Ugh." Pearl sighed. "Are you suggesting I should go talk to him about my superstitions?"

 "Or ask him to look at the fuse box. Dude, how are you planning to survive living at uni?"

 "Well, hopefully by not sharing a place with someone who's involved with someone I got history with."

 "Hm. You never know. But seriously. Just go talk to him. The man looks like a living teddy bear."

 "Hmpf. Maybe later. What are you up to now?"

 "Oh, just chilling out now I'm done studying. And talking to you, obviously," Amethyst said. "Really looking forward to that party that's coming up, been feeling like a total recluse."

 "Oh yeah! It'll be great! Have you heard much from everyone?"

 "Nothing more than the group chat. I'll have to try and pay Ruby back since they're gonna get us that pizza."

 "Oh, pizza sounds nice. That reminds me, I should think about dinner quite soon."

 "That's a good idea. You've been eating enough, right?"

 "Yeah," Pearl said. It wasn't even a lie. "I've been making sure I don't fall into old patterns again."

 "Oh, P! You're doing good, you've been looking better recently, too. We should meet up soon."

 "Please," Pearl said. "Are you around tomorrow?"

 "Should be, after the exam?"

 "Yeah, deffo! Though I might want to see Lazuli at some point as well," Amethyst replied. "You could tag along and get lunch after?"

 "Yeah, that sounds good! I should probably go, though. I'll text you?"

 "Sure thing!" Amethyst seemed jubilant at the prospect. "It would be nice to go with you somewhere a little more classy at some point."

 "Oh... that can be arranged." Pearl smiled. "I'll have a look and pick a place. See you tomorrow!"

 "Alright! See ya!"

 Pearl hung up, and checked her phone: 4% - it was charging, but the phone call had drained more battery than could be regained in this short a time.

She sighed and put down the phone. Probably time to do something that didn't require her phone. Hey, hadn't Rose mentioned something about books?

Pearl had a look at the shelves, examining Rose's extensive collection of books - not just school books and non-fiction, but a load of fiction as well. Heavy books. Pearl frowned, reached out to grab one of the books.

And then, the lights went out.

Pearl gasped, froze in place for several seconds, expecting the light to go back on, like it had before.

It didn't.

"Okay," she said, "well, shit. Uh."

Her phone was emitting a small amount of light, so Pearl went towards it, and saw that it wasn't charging anymore. So it was all the electricity, not just the lights.

And her best bet was that the entire house was affected, not just her room.

 Meanwhile, Greg had been preparing himself dinner in the kitchen below. Soup was simmering in the hob in a small soup pan. He made a noise of surprise as the lights all switched off, noticing that the gas in the oven was still lighting the room. He glanced out of the window but couldn't see if the neighbours had also been affected.

He clumsily waded to the staircase, tripping over a chair. "Pearl?"

 Pearl heard. "Fuck!" she whispered under her breath.

Well, this wasn't really how she would have wanted to encounter Greg.

She opened the door to the corridor, carefully made her way to the stairs. "I'm here," she said. "You ok?"

 "Yeah, I was just making sure you weren't too freaked out! Power outage, huh? I can go and check if the block is affected."

 Pearl clutched her phone, hesitant to use it for light since the battery was so low. "Yeah, sounds like a plan," she said. "Uh, Rose said you know where the fuse box is? I can,  er, check that out?"

 "The basement." Greg swallowed, awkward. "It's down there. I, uh, should do it..." There was an odd pang of anxiety in his voice.

 Pearl picked up on it. "I can do it," she said, "I've got my phone. Do you know if there's any torches or candles around?"

 "Uh, I can look. I think Rose keeps scented ones in her bedroom." Greg rubbed his chin. "Oh yeah! she got them out when-" He looked at Pearl, pausing as his eyes widened.

 Pearl caught his drift, and her shoulders slumped a little bit. “Well, I guess if they’re good enough for that, they’re good enough for lighting the house during an outage,” she said, trying not to let her bitterness bleed into her voice. “You can get those if you want, I’ll try to find the switchboard in the basement.”

 "I have no idea where she keeps the matches. You don't happen to smoke, do ya?" He scratched his head. "If you had a light, it would be ideal."

 Pearl glanced at him, feeling caught out. “I... should have a lighter here somewhere,” she muttered, and then handed it over. Her zippo. “I want it back, though,” she said. “Uh, good luck?”

 "Oh, bad girl." Greg chucked. "Thanks, I'll join ya when I get the candles going."

 Pearl turned wordlessly and tried to navigate her way through the dark house. She didn’t dare touch her phone in case she needed it more later.

She felt her way around the hallway, and ran into a solid mass. “Ow! Shit!”

 Greg heard the cursing as he waded to Rose's room, hands carefully outstretched to guide him. "You okay?" He yelled, hoping to be heard.

 “Yeah, I’m good, just ran into a... thing,” she called back. It looked like a small cabinet, positioned just next to a door.

“Oh, I guess I found it,” Pearl muttered to herself as she opened the door to face an impossibly even darker basement.

She felt her way forward, felt for a handrail on the stairs.

 Greg shuffled around the room, opening shelves beside the bed. He closed his eyes, muttering. "Think... Universe, think. Where were they when she tied you u- Oh!" He glanced beside him, and opened a small cabinet door, with an array of familiar candles inside. "Gotcha!"

 Just then there was an almighty crash as Pearl tripped and fell down the last remaining steps.

“Fuck!”

Okay, her knee had been a bit sore after she ran into the cabinet. But now it was really hurting, and Pearl wasn’t sure she was going to be able to move.

 Greg didn't quite hear it as he lit the candle, allowing a sharp yelp as the flame hit his thumb. But, he was successful in his venture, the warm glow licking his face.

"I'm coming! Got the candles!" He yelled as he made his way to the stairs.

 “Careful on the stairs,” Pearl called out, shifting. “Ow. Fuck.”

 He heard Pearl's cursing this time, but frowned as he slowed down. He glanced to the bottom of the stairwell. "Hey, you alright there, Pearl?"

 “Uh, I may have fallen down the stairs,” she said through her teeth. “My knee fucking hurts.”

 Greg treaded down, carefully peering over her. He gave a little gasp. "Oh geeze, oh man, are you gonna need to go to see someone? Here, can you hold a candle?"

 Pearl was grateful for the light. She took the candle from Greg and put it down next to her. “Just don’t stumble over it,” she said. “Uh.” She touched her knee, pulled a face, and tried to move it. “Ow, ow, ow,” she said, but found that it was not impossible. “On the plus side, I don’t think anything’s broken.”

 "Alright." Greg nodded. "Do you want me to take a look?"

 Pearl turned her face. “No, it should be okay, but thanks. Uh, you could find the fusebox?”

 "Sure thing. I think I can see it over there." He tried to make it over, holding his own candle out. "I'll see if any of the switches are down."

 “Okay.” Pearl held her knee. “Ugh, I hope I haven’t busted my knee again.”

 "Me too. It was real bad last time, right?" Greg opened the box and glanced inside, frowning. "That's not good."

 Pearl looked at him. “Did Rose... tell you about all that?” She then frowned. “What’s up with the fusebox?”

 "Well, yeah, I asked. I was interested in her relationship with you." Greg shrugged as he turned around. "None of the switches are down like I thought they'd be. It might be a bigger problem we might need to wait out." He fiddled with the switches. "Nope. Shit."

 Pearl watched, frowned. "You sure you're not breaking anything over there?"

She wasn't quite sure how to feel about the fact that Rose and Greg had talked about her. About their relationship.

 "Yeah, this is how I usually do it. I think it might be better if we got upstairs and I went to check out the rest of the street."

 "Okay. Well." Pearl tried to move her leg, grimaced. "I don't know if I'll be able to move. I, uh, I can stay here while you check what's going on outside?"

 "You sure? I could try calling an ambulance, too."

 “No!” Pearl said reflexively. “I – I mean,” she hastily added, “I’m sure it’s okay, I’ll be fine, this is more important.”

 "I don't want to leave you here all alone, Pearl." Greg rubbed at his neck. "Not in the basement."

 Pearl found her shoulders slumping a bit. “You don’t need to be worried about me.”

 "Yeah? Well I am. Do you really want to be stuck down here with barely any light?"

 Pearl sighed. “I’ll be okay! I’m sure it’s just a temporary thing. And there’s candles here, and you could, I don’t know, leave the lighter just in case? We need to know what’s going on, surely that’s more important than me being in the basement.”

 "Alright." Greg swallowed. "If you're sure."

 “Yeah I’m sure. I’ve still got my phone as well.” Pearl finally looked at him and tried to give him a reassuring smile. “It’s fine, go on.”

 Greg carried himself to the stairs, nervously looking over his candle. "Text me if anything goes wrong, okay?"

 “Sure.” Pearl was fairly sure she didn’t have his number, but she probably wouldn’t need it. “It’s fine.”

 "Alrighty." He began to ascend, "I'll see you in ten and let you know if there's any news."

 “Okay! Uh, have fun!” She didn’t really know why she said that.

A gust of air came from the door to the basement as Greg left, and the candle next to Pearl flickered.

   Greg swiftly made it out of the house, grabbing a brown jacket and closing the door after giving the direction of the basement a small look. "Hope you'll be okay, bud." She had to be, right?
