I love this because her Alycia MIGHT be showing but you have to stop and think about the character. Lexa has spent her entire life training to be the Commander. She didn't have a normal childhood with her parents or anything. She had to learn how to fight from a young age. There were lessons she was constantly in if she wasn't fighting. Lexa probably only rarely got the chance to even take a moment to look at the world like that. What seems such a childish thing to do- play with a leaf- is such a telling thing that she never got to do that as a child. It seems like something she would have done a thousand times but think about it. When I was a child, we got the biggest or smallest leaf we could find and we looked at it. Looked at the way the veins were inside it. Looked at the stem and the way the leaf had ridges and patterns. Lexa instead was learning how best to make a kill shot with an arrow. Which part of the body is the best to plunge a sword into for a quick kill. Looking for patterns in fighting styles and how best to apprehend your opponent. Lexa never got the chance to sit and play with a leaf. She's from Trikru. Doesn't mean that she has studied the trees at length. A lot of people view the world but don't really get the chance to see it. Lexa is probably one of the characters on TV now to do that. She sees the world around her but she pays attention to how she can better herself- how her people are- what she could be doing to help them. She probably never thought about just sitting down and seeing the world around her- watching the clouds, seeing the falling leaves of autumn, how the grass becomes dewy in the morning. And that's one of the saddest things about Lexa. Her inexperience with everything that we would have experienced as a child. Clarke may not have experienced the world either- but she had the freedom to study her world around her in the ark, Lexa was too busy with what she had to do to survive and become Commander.

So yes, our smol fragile Commander Lexa is playing with 'a fucking leaf' but I think she's 'seeing' one for the first time and studying it, while she's listening to the men. She's allowing herself in the guise of a shy girl- to have an experience she never got- even if it's as simple as studying a leaf.
