Day 27: Fairytale!AU

There was a princess, a tower, a dragon, a knight.

There was also a spy, and that changed things up a bit.

The knight issued his challenge, the dragon roared in response, and Cassian rolled his eyes. If the knight was so eager for a toasted death, Cassian was going to take advantage of the distraction.

Cassian carefully scaled the outside of the tower. His fingers were shredded by the rough stone but he pressed through the ache, eventually reaching the window. Cassian tumbled through it, eyes darting around as he came to his feet. He needed to know where—

There was a blade at his throat, whisper-bright line of pain as it bit against the skin.

“Well if it isn’t the fairweather Captain Andor?”

“Princess Leia,” Cassian answered carefully. She could kill him.

She had every right to kill him.

(Continued past cut)

“Oh come off it, Andor, we both know you’re no loyalist. Is your new master trying a new tactic in our showy stalemate? Sneaking in won’t count, you do have to actually slay the dragon to claim my hand.”

“Palpatine grew tired of your exaggerated deference to tradition. He knows you’re leading the Rebellion from here. He decided to do away with your dragon, paid your supplier to dose cows with arsenic.”

The blade jerked against his neck and Cassian continued, “He asked me to arrange it. I did, then took the evidence and released it to the public. The rancher is disgraced, the people are frothing over the attempt at drawing short the courtship. Palpatine won’t try that again.”

“Why?” Leia asked.

“Why?”

“Why are you here? Why save my dragon?” The blade faltered, then Leia’s eyes flashed and it was steady against his pulse again. “Why did you open the gates? My parents trusted you!”

“I am here,” Cassian began, “because you alone have the right to decide my fate. I saved your dragon because the charade needs to continue long enough for the Rebellion to gather forces. And I opened the gates…” Cassian’s mouth went dry as he remembered the screams of that night. “…on your mother’s orders. So that, when the moment was right, I could ensure Palpatine’s plans failed.”

The sword clattered to the floor. “No.”

“He was too strong. He was going to break through the walls. It would be a massacre. If someone let him in…many could be spared.”

“That…sounds like her.”

Cassian closed his eyes, head bowed by the guilt of that day. “Regardless, my actions lead to their deaths. My life is yours to claim.”

He heard Leia pick up the sword. “On your knees.”

Cassian fell to his knees, eyes still shut. The end would be quick, at least.

The flat of the blade laid against his shoulder. Cassian’s eyes flew open.

“I name you Sir Andor the Faithful.” Leia proclaimed.

Cassian’s eyes went wide. “I am not worthy of—”

“Mine to claim,” Leia snapped. “I’m claiming it Now rise, Sir Andor, and…welcome to the Rebellion.”

Au between ANH and ESB where Vader discreetly sends Luke stuff and both luke and the rebellion are confused as to who Luke's mysterious benefactor is

“Is this really necessary?” Luke asked Leia for the fiftieth time. “That X-wing is beautiful.”

“And probably rigged to explode,” she shot back. As she had forty-nine times before. They both stood at the edge of the disused hangar, watching the techs in their blast-proof vests and hazard suits comb over the engines for any sign of trackers or sabotage. Nothing exciting had happened since the package first appeared on the Alliance’s doorstep, in a dusty field about three kilometres from their base.

“If someone wants me dead and knows our position precisely enough to drop this off in the dead of night, they could just sneak into base and murder me with half the expense. None of our lookouts noticed anything coming in last night.”

“That,” Leia enunciated the plosive until she was almost tutting at him, “is exactly what worries us. Who is your mysterious benefactor, Luke?”

“I don’t know! If I knew I would tell you, you know that.”

Her face softened. “I do. But you know that it worries me.”

“None of their previous gifts have been dangerous!”

“I am still utterly furious that you made and drank that hot chocolate just because it was in a box with your name on it. You would die if you had anyenemies at a senatorial cocktail party.”

Luke snorted. “I think I’d die of boredom before they even got the poison into my drink.”

“That’s not the point!”

“I had a good feeling about the hot chocolate,” he insisted. His gaze was still fixed on the techs, and how they were—no, they were taking apart that beautiful engine, how could they? “It felt… loving. Warm. Affectionate.”

“That’s just what hot chocolate feels like, Luke.”

“This was before I even touched it. And it’s not like the cookies killed anyone either. Or the model Skyhopper.”

“I still think that was so, so suspicious.”

“I have a good feeling about this ship, too. Other than the paint job. Black is so boring.” He wrinkled his nose at it.

“You’re going to be wearing all-black in a few years’ time. I’m predicting it now.”

“Maybe I can paint it yellow, my father had a yellow podracer when he was a kid…”

“Or maybe it will explode, take out half our techs, and we’ll have to move base for fear that a malicious entity knows our position.”

“I have a good feeling about this, Leia! You’ve gotta trust the Jedi instincts.” He wriggled his fingers as he said it. “Ow, that’s my head.”

When he glared at her, Leia laughed, lowering her hand. “Your Jedi instincts warn you about everything, huh?”

He pouted. “I thought you believed in me.”

“I do! They’re great in uncontrolled and dangerous situations. I’m not Han and I won’t deny that they’re what saved us time after time. But if there’s an uncertainty we can control, we should control it. I’m not letting you get into that ship until it’s been thoroughly vetted and cleaned out.”

Luke fully turned towards her at that point, staring. “Cleaned out?”

“Yeah.” She wrinkled her nose. “Have you been near it yet?”

“Well, considering you mysteriously appear whenever I reach the hangar door to block my entry, no.”

“You have your Jedi senses. I have a sixth sense too. It’s for when Luke Skywalker is about to do something stupid.”

“A true friend,” he drawled, narrowing his eyes.

“Anyway, it stinks. Of smoke and hot metal and something distinct. We’ve got some defectors from Shu-Torun who say it reminds them of the smell that comes from stuff put together there. The lava gives off gases that cling to the construct for ages. You’re not getting in there without it having a wash.”

“You want to perfume my X-wing?”

“No—we want to take it apart and figure out who sent it, where it’s from, and why. But after that, yeah.”

Luke gave a dramatic sigh. “We shall be together one day. Mark my words.”

“Maybe your pieces will be intertwined when it blows itself up and you with it.”

“It’s not going to blow up.”

“How do you know? This benefactor of yours is a serious concern, Luke. High Command are sure some of this tech they’ve sent you could only be supplied by an Imperial, but if they’re an Imperial who knows our location, why haven’t they attacked us yet? If they want to support us, why reach out to you in particular? You’re the face of the Rebellion, yes, but…”

“Maybe they’re a Jedi,” Luke said.

“Luke, you want everyone to be a Jedi.”

“Maybe that’s because I don’t like the fact that everyone like me is dead, Leia.”

She snapped back, “Join the club.”

He winced. “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. That was out of line.”

“I understand. I forgive you. My comment was out of line as well.” She took his arm and leaned her head against him, while he leaned some of his weight against her. “Perhaps I’m so obsessed with this question because I love the idea that someone out there is rooting for you. For all of us.”

Luke smiled. “Yeah. I thought anyone outside the Rebellion who might want to help me died with my aunt and uncle. It’s strange, having a benefactor, knowing someone wishes me well.”

“It’s why I can’t trust it. It’s too good to be true.”

“But imagine if it is!” He turned to her. “Someone supports us. Someone loves what we’re doing—whatever aspect of what we’re doing that applies to—and wants us to keep at it. Someone wants us to succeed.” He looked up. “Someone out there is watching us do this, and is so, so happy we’re still here to do it.”

Leia wrapped her arms around his waist. “Yeah,” she admitted. “That is a really nice thing to hope for.”

“Aren’t you the one who always says it’s hope that we rely on?”

She looked up at him shrewdly, then burst out laughing at the bashful smile he gave her.

“Yes,” she got out after her laughter had pealed away. “Yes I am.”

“I don’t mean to bother you, my lord.”

“Then do not bother me, Piett, and say what you have to say.” Vader didn’t look up from his datapad as he strode through the corridors, Piett sprinting to catch up.

“You see, my lord, I”—pause to pant—“I couldn’t help but notice”—pant—“you have been sending resources to the Rebellion?”

They turned into a private corridor, thankfully, so no passing officers could gossip about this. Vader still looked uninterested. “Yes, Piett. Once this mysterious benefactor has gained Skywalker’s trust, he will be easy to lure out with a simple note, and then we will capture him.”

“You have spent a significant amount of our navy budget on this plan, then?”

“Of course.”

“But sir… you are delivering them direct to the Rebel base?”

“Of course. Cease stating obvious facts as questions. They are simple and logical. This is a worthwhile endeavour.”

“I have no doubt of that my lord”—panting, for a good few seconds—“but surely if you know the location of the base… we could simply attack them, take Skywalker prisoner, and crush the Rebel threat?”

Vader stopped walking. Piett overshot himself and slid for a metre or two on the perfectly polished floor. Damn boots.

“I see your point,” Vader said.

“Shall I begin organising the attack, sir?”

“I see your point, but I disagree with it.”

H… how…? “Of course, sir.”

“This endeavour is an attempt to gain Skywalker’s trust. I will not be breaking it.”

“Sir? Do you need his trust? He is a Rebel terrorist.”

“He is all and he is more. I intend to show him what that means. He will come to me of his own volition soon enough, he will shed his preconceived notions about the universe, and he will face his destiny.” Vader nodded, and kept walking.

Piett, long used to Vader’s cryptic statements, just nodding mutely. And then he stared at his retreating back, still partly out of breath, and wondered why the hell he had decided to go into the navy.

Building Anew

Now that May The 4th Be With You Excange has revealed I’m crossposting my fic! so here’s some fluffy Grogu and Luke bonding! (also can be kinda dinluke if you want)

In his efforts to rebuild the Jedi order Luke finds himself learning many new things, some were expected such as old Jedi teachings and methods of finding force sensitives, others things he had not expected, such as the favourite colours of his younger students.

"Wait Master Luke, lightsabers can be purple?" a tiny Twi’lek pipes up.

"Yes there's a multitude of different colours that lightsabers can take depending on the users connec-"

"Can they be rainbow? Rainbow is my favorite colour!" comes another voice.

"My favorite is yellow!" from a Nautolan boy.

The ensuing lesson turned into a session of sharing favourite colours. Which, if Luke is being honest, is surprisingly enjoyable.

Teaching turns out to be one of Luke's favourite parts of resurrecting the order. Each of his students is different and helping them find and control their connection to the force is rewarding. The kids are also interesting to talk to, they're happy to tell him, with the honesty and excitement that comes with childhood, about a variety of things from a cool bug they found to what sensing presences in the force feels like.

Luke learns a lot about each of his students, both mundane and not.

Grogu is probably one of the most interesting to communicate with. Luke learns a number of things about Grogu, firstly that the kid has had a long life.

A really long life.

The first time Luke really gets a sense of Grogu's age is a few weeks after he was first brought to the small temple that acted as the youngling teaching quarters. He and Grogu are meditating together when he's hit with a rush of unfamiliar memories.

Huge sprawling temples filled with the bustle of people going about their day. The sound of children playing and distant lightsaber practice. The sight of adults hurrying past, lightsabers strapped to their hips, some with padawans trailing behind trying to keep up.

It takes him a few seconds to piece together that the memories are of the old Jedi order at its height. He turns to observe the small green child, struck by the fact that the people from that memory are probably all long gone.

"You're a lot older than you look, aren't you?" he murmurs quietly.

The child doesn't move, still deep in meditation, so Luke returns to meditating as well. They settle back into peaceful and companionable silence.

The second thing he learns about Grogu is that he loves his dad. Though Luke only met him briefly he can see that they have a strong bond.

Grogu is also more than willing to share stories of his and his dad's adventures with Luke. Every memory Grogu shares is laden with warmth and adoration.

The adventures are also seemingly extremely dangerous, which is how Luke quickly learns fact number three.

Grogu's father is a stone cold badass. From risky rescues snatching Grogu from the clutch of Imperials to killing a fully grown krayt dragon (something he is honestly in awe of) the man seems to be an unstoppable force powered by protective instincts.

As the stories go on Luke starts to wonder if part of the reason Grogu's father is so unstoppable is because he never stops to think anything through.

Of course Luke isn't exactly one to judge since he's nowhere near the picture of restraint himself.

But still, for force sake the man let himself be swallowed whole by a krayt dragon!

Even Luke isn't quite that dumb… well for the part he's not.

Grogu, it seems, has inherited his father's lack of regard for consequences, as he's quite willing to attempt to eat anything without waiting for Luke to check if it's poisonous or not.

However Grogu's favourite foods by far are frogs and cookies. Luke isn't quite sure what those two things have in common but he does know that cookies must be protected from the green bean (especially if they belong to another student) and that most of the frogs on Draay 2 aren't poisonous.

Except for the tiny yellow ones.

Chasing down Grogu to remove frogs from his mouth to scan for edibility becomes a daily struggle.

This is when Luke first realizes that Grogu is a menace.

The child has more chaotic energy than should feasibly fit into such a small being. Most memorably in the lightsaber incident. The less said about that the better but Luke has certainly learnt his lesson about leaving his lightsaber in a place that small green toddlers can reach.

He's glad to still have his legs.

A fact that he has not been at all prepared to learn came during one of Grogu's father's visits. Which was that Din was apparently a king.

Din lands his ship at the small landing platform adjacent to the temple. Grogu is practically vibrating with excitement by the time the loading door opens and the man walks out, beskar armour glinting in the sunlight.

Unlike his previous visits he is flanked by two other Mandalorians, both wearing blue armour.

Din turns to one of the Mandalorians and says something, too low for Luke to overhear at this distance, and the two Mandalorians turn to go back inside the ship.

As Din walks closer, Grogu wriggles free from Luke's arms and runs to his father. Din drops down and scoops the excited child up into his arms. Luke can hear Grogu making excited squeaks as Din murmurs something to the child.

“Who are your friends?” Luke asks as Din walks closer.

“Royal guard.” is Din’s only response.

“Royal guard?”

“I’m technically the Mand’alor”

“Technically?”

“It’s… complicated. I don’t suppose you’d want a second laser sword?”

“Uh, no thank you” Luke says, noticing one of the blue clad guards glaring at him from the ship. Her helmet is off and he can see short red hair and a slightly terrifying expression that reminds him of Leia when some poor soul angers her.

“Yeah that’s probably for the best,” Din says wryly.

The rest of the visit is fairly normal, except for the bodyguards hovering over Din. Luke gets the distinct impression that the guards are more interested in ensuring that Din doesn’t make a run for it than protecting him from danger.

Something he learns after a while is that Grogu has nightmares.

Grogu is more than happy to share snippets of memories and stories about his life before the fall of the old order. However he avoids the topic of the fall itself. Luke doesn’t push Grogu to share anything he’s not comfortable with.

Luke is pretty sure that's what the nightmares are about since Grogu refuses to tell him anything about them.

He’s okay with that. He doesn’t need to know the specifics to comfort the small scared child that comes to him. Luke just holds Grogu and murmurs reassurances.

Sometimes, if it’s really bad they start a holo call to Din, he always answers no matter the time. They stay up late talking about whatever they can think about until Grogu has fallen asleep, comforted by the presence and voice of his father.  

Once when Din is visiting Grogu, Luke wakes to a knock on his door in the middle of the night. He finds a very tired looking Mandalorian carrying Grogu.

“He had a nightmare?” Luke asks.

Din nods clearly suppressing a yawn.

“Come on in. I’ll make some caf.” Luke says, stepping aside.

They stay up talking long after Grogu has fallen asleep, Din tells Luke about the struggles of being a king and Luke shares some stories he’s collected from being a teacher.

He tells Din about the lightsaber incident. Din finds it funny and Luke would probably be more annoyed if the man’s laugh wasn’t so pleasant.

By the time Din leaves, the sun is just starting to crest over the horizon and Luke realizes that he has to go set up for his morning class.

He decides that there are much worse ways to spend the night than with Din and Grogu.

Grogu apparently agrees with him based on the number of crayon drawings he makes of the three of them after that.

Luke is pretty sure Din gets a few of them framed.

A SHEEP AS BLACK AS MIDNIGHT IN SPACE

It is a dark time for the Galaxy. General Enric Pryde and Supreme Leader Snoke have unleashed a reign of terror, dealing the New Republic a terrible blow with the Hosnian Cataclysm. But all is not lost. General Organa has discovered a New Hope from the desert of Jakku, who will become the Last Jedi. After Rey, Han Solo, Chewbacca, Poe Dameron and Finn, the former FN2187 undertook a daring raid that led to the destruction of Starkiller Base, Rey has gone to Ahch-To, to study under the reclusive Jedi Master Luke Skywalker. And he will tell her a secret. There is another.

I: THERE IS ANOTHER.

Luke Skywalker sighed, heavily.

“Master Luke, what is it? What’s wrong?”

“I destroyed my own family, Rey. And the Galaxy is paying the price. Did you ever wonder why Han and Leia don’t live together? Why I’m in exile, here? There is another. Or at least, there was. My nephew. My paduan. The best and worst student at the Jedi Temple. Ben Solo.”

“Ben Solo! Didn’t he die at the Jedi Temple?”

“In a way, he did. He doesn’t use that name, anymore.”

“Then he’s alive? Do you know what happened to him?”

“A great many things. First? There were his mother's expectations. She had his whole life planned out. His Royal Highness, Prince Benjamin Skywalker Organa-Solo. He was going to be the perfect Jedi, the perfect young leader, the perfect fair-haired son of the New Republic. He wasn’t supposed to be a giant behemoth of a man, who was too much like his father and his grandfather to fit in any mold. Han and I pretty much figured that Big Ben was going his own way by the time he was six. His hair was down to his waist, and he’d scream and break the scissors with the Force if you came near him to cut his hair. He wouldn’t wear clothes. Just a pair of underwear, if you took him out. He wanted to be a Wookiee. He wouldn’t speak Basic. Just Shriiyywook. We worked it out. But Ben never really changed.”

Luke sighed.

“As he grew to manhood, I started seeing my nephew as a monster. His obsession with his own duality, and that of his grandfather. His heretical leanings toward the Grey Path. And his vows? Forget vows. Not my nephew, the king of taboo. Jedi are supposed to take vows of chastity, and honesty. To have control over their emotions. Ben sold cigarillos, wine, and rubbers from his father’s smuggling operation out of my father’s TIE Fighter, his personal vehicle. He lost his virginity when he was 14 to his best friend, Talia who was 13. As usual? Han was the best worst father, ever. He took her to get an implant, and kept Ben supplied with rubbers. Which he needed, because any of my female students who were curious about their resident Rebel Angel? Let’s just say, Ben never failed to satisfy their curiosity. He didn’t listen to me when I tried to stop him. He really thought he meant something to these girls. After all, they meant something to him. It took Talia telling him she was going to rent him by the hour out of her Wookiee foster father’s garage in Mos Eisley, because he laid more pipe to more satisfied customers than any spaceport gigolo. I mean, how do you teach a six and a half foot tall Force of nature who has been using the Force since he was a toddler in a crib to open the cupboard and get the cookies?”

“He likes cookies?”

“Ben? He eats like a Wookiee. Literally. Chewie taught him to cook.”

“But he likes cookies?”

“Eats them by the box."

Master Luke laughed.

“Now I see that all of it was so very minor. I used to get so angry with him about the TIE Fighter, and the smuggling, and Talia, and the other girls. He didn’t trust me to tell me how the Dark Side, how Snoke was stalking him. It had been a terrible day, for Ben. I disciplined his little group of girls, and all four of them blamed everything on him. Not Talia, though. She spoke up for Ben. But the other three girls? They didn’t take his side. They gave him up. He sat in his hut and cried, all day. He really cared. He did. The poor kid cried himself to sleep. I went to check on him, that night and I felt the Dark Side all around him. While he was sleeping. I thought he had given himself over to it. I attacked. I almost cut off his head, but Ben defended himself. He blocked my lightsaber with his and punched me in the face as hard as he could. If I wasn’t a Jedi Master who can anticipate my opponent's movements. It would have broken my neck. But he didn't mean to kill me. Ben was just scared. As it was, I was unconscious until the morning. By then? It was all over."

Rey couldn’t believe the enormity of the act that he had just admitted to.

Trying to murder his own paduan, his own nephew!

“What happened to your nephew after he brought the building down on you? Did he join the Dark Side.”

“No. He packed up his gear and walked ten miles to the spaceport, and made it there by morning. He left Yavin 4 on a Mandalorian freighter with a business associate of his father’s, Din Saxon, under an assumed name that he had identity papers for. Now he’s partners with Rotta the Hutt, Jabba’s son, Din Saxon, the Mandalorian, and Han Solo. They revived the old Galactic Black Market, and now there’s a war on, not only are they making a fortune? They’re the only game in town for a lot of little things that people find it hard to live without. They do sell arms and coaxium to both sides, but they only sell the low-grade junk to the First Order and at three times the price they sell to the Resistance. I hear that Ben’s doing well. He hasn’t realized his ambition to meet the girl the Force has bound him to, but he still has his friend, Talia. I trained her as a Jedi Healer, and she's since gone to the Republic Medical School. She's Ben's personal doctor. As reckless as he is? He needs to travel with a farkling doctor. Pardon my language. The point is, my nephew renounced the Jedi and the Sith, the Dark and the Light, that day. He wants no part of it. He follows the Grey Path. As it was laid out by Master Qui-Gon Jinn. He also wants no part of this war. His name is Ben Solo, but the name he does business under, the name you’ll have heard of is his alias. Kylo Skywalker. The Arkanian.”

“Ben Solo is Kylo Skywalker, the Arkanian?”

“Yes. And he and Han are looking to add a good scavenger to their operation, because Kylo just bought the salvage rights to the site of the Battle of Yavin-4. And he’s the new owner of the ruins of the Second Death Star. You were the best scavenger at Niima Outpost. I’m sure you're the woman for the job.”

Kylo Skywalker was truly a man larger than life.

He wore a black oilskin duster, caped and hooded, festooned with grommets, pockets, and epaulets over a black pair of pilot’s coveralls, tucked into tall black jackboots.

He also wore a huge pair of brown leather and Beskar chrome goggles, with shatterproof mirrored lenses.

And he was the tallest, burliest man that Rey had ever seen.

He sat down across from her at the table she had picked out at the Niima Cantina.

The man had a quiet air of undeniable menace about him.

It put Rey on edge.

“You should try to hide that you have that much strength in the Force. The Sith are real, and the First Order take who they want.”

“Not if I work for you, Jedi Temple dropout, right?"

“I picked a good time to leave. I hear you're the best scavenger at Niima Outpost.”

“I am. Can you take those goggles off? I feel like I’m talking to a man with no eyes.”

He lowered his hood, and took off the goggles.

Time stopped.

And it wasn’t just because Kylo Skywalker the man had grown up to be a black swan with dark, saturnine good looks out of the ugly duckling of a boy that Master Luke had described to her.

It was because Rey was fairly sure it was him.

The man with whom she had shared a bond in the Force, for as long as she could remember.

She never knew his face, or his name, but now that she saw him, she somehow recognized him.

“It’s OK. I feel it, too. The Force brings people together for all kinds of reasons. Look at it this way? Now you’re sure to get the job. You’re hired, Rey…”

Rey shrugged.

“Just Rey. My parents left me when I was a little girl. I never got a last name. I don’t have identity papers, either.”

“That’s OK. I can get you some, if you need them.”

The doors opened.

Rey was excited to see Han and Chewie, again.

Kylo laughed.

He had a beautiful smile.

“My father. And my godfather. But you knew that, because my Uncle sent you here to recruit me. But I get the feeling you might decide to stick with me and the Old Man, instead. Keep that quiet, though.”

Han and Chewbacca sat down.

“She really is a scavenger. A friend of Poe’s. He got her into this mess. I got her out of it. So, you hired her, right, junior?”

“I hired her.”

“How you been, princess? You don’t look so good.” Han asked.

“You can tell us. I used to be you, after all. The Galaxy’s only hope.” Kylo joked.

“It was awful, mostly. Really awful. Master Luke was nothing like I thought he would be. Sometimes, he was very kind. But sad. As if he forgot that he was supposed to be terrible. But some of the things he taught me just confused me. Or scared me. I’m afraid of myself, now. What I might do.” Rey admitted.

“Forget it. Forget everything he taught you. It’s meaningless. The Force has no Dark Side, and no light. That dualistic nerfshit thinking? People made that up. As an excuse to control each other. And make war. You shouldn’t be afraid of what you’ll do, like it’s not up to you. You make your own destiny, Rey. Look at me. I made mine. I’m no Jedi. And I’m no Sith. There is another way. “Sounds like Luke is in bad shape, junior.” Han mentioned.

Casually.

“When Rey reports back to him? We’ll send him some supplies.” Kylo said.

“Rey, do you really want to be a Jedi?” Han asked her.

Nobody had asked her that, yet.

“I don’t know.”

“Well, try working with us for awhile. If you don’t want to go back? I won’t send you. I learned my lesson on that. With junior, here. Even after that Snoke bastard burned the Temple, Luke tried to get me to send my kid back to him, one more time. I said no. Since then, I get to visit my wife, but we don’t live together. And the kid and her aren’t on good terms. But Ben’s alive, and doing good, and the Sith and the First Order didn’t get him. It’s worth it. Don’t go back if you don’t want to. Let ‘em have their farkling war, without you. Fuck ‘m.” Han told her.

Kylo raised his pitcher.

“Dark side? Light side? Fuck it. My side.” He said.

He motioned to the Rodian barman.

“Rey works for me and Solo, now. If there’s trouble with her? You’ve got trouble with all of us.”

“I never had trouble with Rey. You made a good choice, Rey. These guys are the real deal. Order what you want, kiddo. The Arkanian has deep pockets. The deepest in the Galaxy.”

Rey was very hungry.

She ordered a lot of food, and a cheap half bottle of red wine.

“Don’t bring her the cheap stuff.” Kylo told the Rodian.

“Why are you so rich, Kylo?” Rey asked.

“He gets dressed up like another Darth Vader. Red lightsaber and all. And we raid First Order ships with full cargo holds. Or Crimson Dawn freighters. Sometimes First Order warehouses and depots. All he has to do is show up and…say it, Vader junior. Say your thing.” Han suggested.

“I am Kylo Skywalker, Lord Vader. All of this belongs to me. Surrender to me all that I ask for. Or you will die. Quickly! I find your lack of haste disturbing.”

Rey shivered.

But, much to her shame, not entirely in fear.

“That’s why I call him junior. Because I ain’t calling him Kylo. I didn’t name him Kylo. You should see these assholes give up. They usually just kneel and grovel. Sometimes, we have to get tough? But most of the time? It’s all money, it’s all for the taking, and it’s all ours.” Han explained.

“I also liberate Stormtroopers. Snoke takes them from their families, when they are children. And he brainwashed, humiliates, tortures, and enslaves them. The First Order takes their faces and their names, and makes them kill. For Snoke. It’s what he did to me. It’s what he meant for me. I didn’t deserve to live that way. No one does.” Kylo added.

“What happens to them?”

“If they have a home to go to? I help them return to it. Or find a job. Some of them work for me. They are my people, I am their Chieftain. No one else cares about them. Not my mother. Not the Resistance. Not the New Republic. I care.” Kylo told her.

Rey nodded.

The idea that Darth Vader’s grandson, the Galaxy’s only Grey Jedi Master, a ruthless pirate with unlimited money, was the self-styled Arkanian-style Clan Chieftain of a small army of loyalists with military training was a little unsettling.

And that’s why the General wants him. She wants not just her son, but his people, and the influence he has over not just them, but potentially the First Order.

When Rey thought that, Kylo turned to her.

“The Old Man and I are dangerous, ruthless men. But compared to my mother? We’re baby Ewoks.”

“I’ll drink to that.” Han agreed.

And just like that, Rey was working for the Outer Rim Cartel.

Her food and wine showed up.

“So, junior, I talked to the guy? The guy about identity papers for Rey. You object to her being a Solo?”

Kylo smiled at Rey in a way that let her know she wasn’t the only one thinking what she was thinking.

“As long as she isn’t supposed to be my sister? It’s fine by me.” Kylo replied.

"Nah. It says I'm her legal guardian until she's 21. So, that way, nobody can steal you, from me, Rey. I also put you down as Junior's common law wife. Then, after you're 21? Nobody can steal you from him. Considering the way you two keep looking at each other? I figure you don't mind."

"So, this is my wedding night?" Kylo asked

"Watch it, kid. They're just papers. It's not like I bought her from Unkar Plutt and I'm giving her to you."

"Yes, Kylo. This is our wedding night." Rey told him.

Chewbacca made a comment.

"It was not fast, Chewie. Rey is her. The girl of Ben's dreams. It's the Thunderbolt. Didn't you know, when you first met Mala, that she was the one for you?"

Chewie said something about how he wasn't talking about that kind of knowing.

"Yeah, well, it's none of our business. They're probably just kidding around. Come on, old pal. Let's not be the extra dicks at the wedding."

Han got up.

Chewie said something, sternly, to Ben that Rey didn't understand, and Ben replied earnestly.

Rey decided she was going to have to learn better Shriyyywook.

After Han and Chewie left, Ben opened the bottle of wine.

"Since we've suddenly found ourselves married? I should make you some kind of vow. Think about the loneliness you felt on this desert, Rey. The longing for someone, something to come for you. Think about it, and let it go. Because you'll never be that alone, again." He told her.

"You have nothing to worry about, Ben. You're every bit as strong as Darth Vader. And just as much a man as Han Solo. You may think you're the ugly duckling. But you've transformed into a beautiful black swan. What happens, now?"

"We'll eat our dinner, and drink this bottle of vintage Corellian red. And then? We'll start doing whatever the fuck we want. And we'll keep doing whatever the fuck we want, until death comes for us. And the son of a bitch is going to have to sneak up on me."

Kylo poured two glasses of wine.

Rey began to think this might really be where she was meant to be, after all.

You were curled up in your bed watching The Office for the hundredth time. You were on the episode where Michael met the girl at the blood drive and they threw an anti-Valentine's party and it gave you an idea.

Hey Andy, do you have any activities planned for your wing soon?

Andy was the Resident Assistant for the other wing of the dorm floor you lived and worked on. As an RA, you had a certain number of activities and social events you had to put on for the residents of your wing, and you were always looking for something to do with the other RAs so you didn’t have to do it all alone.

Watching The Office, how about an anti-Valentine's party for our residents? Unless you're not actually anti-Valentine's?

No, that sounds like a good idea. Wanna get together tomorrow afternoon to plan it?

They next day you arrived with your binder that you kept all your RA related paperwork in. Andy's door was open, but you knocked anyway.

"Hey, ready to plan this thing?"

"Yea," he said getting up and pulling a pile of clothes off the other chair for you to sit down.

You were excited when you found out Andy was going to be the other RA on your floor. He was a really chill person, but a lot of freshmen were intimidated by the tattoos he didn't even try to cover up most of the time.

"So, I was thinking we could use the meeting room between our wings, have punch or soda, cookies, and snacks. For decorations, I was thinking like the show and like rip the wings off paper cupids, tear hearts in half," you suggested.

"What if we gave out prizes for stuff like trivia about breakup songs, or most cringey dumping story?"

"Oh, those are good ideas too!" You said enthusiastically writing Andy's ideas down. "Do you wanna go with me to get the food and candy and stuff? I can go myself this weekend if you're busy."

"No, no I wanna come help pick stuff out," he said with a smile. "Besides I got a car, so we won't have to drag it all back on the city bus."

"Oh, thank God, I was hoping you'd say that," you replied with a grin.

A few days later you were on your way to the store in Andy's car. When you got in and he started it, metal music came blasting through the speakers.

"Woah, sorry," he said as he quickly reached for the knob to turn it town.

"Its ok, I wouldn't expect much less from you!" You laughed.

When you got to the store you started picking out food and drinks for the party.

"Don't let me forget to grab sprinkles, I wanna make cookies," you commented as you pushed the cart down the aisle.

"Can we grab something vegan for me?" Andy asked politely.

"Wait, you're vegan? How did I never notice that?"

He shrugged in response.

"Somethings don't surprised me about you Hurley, and somethings really do."

You had Andy take over pushing the cart while you scrolled through your phone to find a vegan cookie recipe that didn't seem too hard. You didn't notice as you trailed behind him had had made his way to the section of the store decked out with Valentine's decorations and candy. Suddenly a box of Star Wars Valentines cards was in front of your face.

"I'm gonna give these out to all the other RAs and my residents," he said as he tossed them in the cart.

"Do they have any Snoopy ones?" You asked, looking through the selection of designs clearly made for young children.

"I dunno," he replied before starting to help you search for your favorite cartoon character. When you found the Valentines you wanted, you both continued to wander through the department laughing at the cheesy presents and decorations. You found enough stuff to thoroughly destroy and mangle for your party and before heading to the checkout.

"I'm really excited about this," you said as you helped Andy load his car.

"Me too, it was a great idea."

"Thanks," you replied with a grin.

The next night, Andy was passing through the basement of the dorm while doing his evening rounds, and found you in the kitchen.

"Hey, (YN), what are you doing down here?"

"Oh, hey, I was practicing making vegan cookies for you actually. If the recipe was bad, I didn't want you to be stuck with gross cookies. Wanna try one?" You asked holding out the plate.

He took one, examining both sides before biting it. His eyes got wide and you suddenly became nervous that you had messed up.

"Its delicious," he said mouth half full, before devouring the rest of the cookie. You laughed, relieved you hadn't just poisoned your friend. You tried one yourself and were pretty impressed.

"Oh yea, I did good! Here, take the rest of the ones that are done," you said handing him the plate.

"Really?"

"Yea, I told you I made them for you! I'm gonna keep the last half dozen that are in the oven right now though. They're too good to pass up."

"Thanks," he replied with a bashful smile before continuing on his rounds. He really appreciated the gesture, as most people didn't bother to make him treats due to his strict dietary restrictions. He spent the rest of the night thinking about how special you made him feel.

Valentine's Day arrived cold and grey like most February days. When you dragged yourself out of bed, you saw an envelope had been slipped under your door. You flipped on the light to read it, but didn't recognize the handwriting on the front.

You opened it up and it was a card with a cartoon drawing of Princess Leia that read "Bold, Brave, Strong". Flipping it open, you saw it had said "The galaxy needs more Valentines like you" but the words “the galaxy” were crossed off and it was edited to read “I need more Valentines like you”. It was signed by Andy.

You couldn't help to grin the rest of the morning looking forward to when you were gonna meet up with him to decorate for the party. You arrived before Andy and started putting up the perfectly destroyed decorations and setting out the food.

“Hey,” you heard Andy say behind you. You turned around and found him smiling sheepishly.

“Hey,” you smiled at him. “I got your card. Thank you.”

“I mean it, you’re awesome,” he said crossing the room and closing the distance between you. You glanced down at his lips then back up into his eyes.

“Hey (YN), what time does the party start?” Your resident Megan asked from the doorway and Andy stepped aside and started busying himself with the food on the table.

“In about 30 minutes, remind the others!” You replied cheerfully, although you were irritated by the interruption.

You sorted out the rest of the snacks in silence and the residents started filing in. There wasn’t a huge turnout, but you weren’t too surprised. The trivia contest did get a bit heated and everyone was complimentary on the food you made. When the party was over, you and Andy started cleaning up at opposite ends of the room. You hadn’t said too much to each other since you were interrupted. You couldn’t take it much longer.

“Andy?”

“Yea?” He said turning around. You were holding up one of the vegan cookies, cut into the shape of a heart.

“Be my Valentine?”

He didn’t respond, instead he took the cookie, and set it on a plate and then grabbed your waist and pulled you to him, lips crashing together.

“Hey (YN), I was won… never mind” you heard Megan say from the doorway before you waved her off without breaking the kiss. There wasn’t much time left this Valentine’s Day, and nothing was going to stop you from spending it with Andy.

I’m just gonna plonk this in that one modern au I dreamt up ages ago but here we go

- Who starts putting up decorations in October?

Leia, she really loves Christmas because she can spend time with her family and friends (that’s becoming harder and harder because Luke lives up in Alice Springs and she hardly ever sees him because it’s such a long trip from Adelaide) and it’s better than the Halloween decorations that are always up in their street. She doesn’t go overboard though, and she also keeps her favourite decorations up throughout the year in unobtrusive places.

- Who buys the advent calendars?

Han has like 500 million and will deny it when you ask him why there’s heaps of little chocolates and candles (and lego) around the house

- Who places mistletoe all around the house?

Han puts it up as a joke and Leia keeps catching him under it. 

- Who wraps the presents for other people?

Leia’s more organized so she buys the presents (with Han’s help) but he wraps them. Leia always makes a point of hiding his and wrapping them when she’s at work, so they always turn out adorably wonky. 

- Who puts the final star/angel on the top of the Christmas tree?

After The Incident (Han tried to lift her up and they accidentally knocked the tree over) and The Incident 2: Electric Boogaloo (Leia tried to use a ladder and knocked the tree over), Han puts the star on the tree. Leia swears that one day they’re going to buy a smaller tree so she can put the star on top of it without someone knocking the tree over but so far that’s never happened.

- Who’s the one that hates eggnog?

They both hate it with a fiery burning passion. Because Christmas in Australia is always a million degrees, and it contains raw egg, they’ve steered clear since their first Christmas together (They both got food poisoning and ever since then it’s been a big fat no).

- Who’s the one that bakes Christmas cookies for guests?

They both do, they have days where all they do is churn out ridiculous amounts of biscuits complete with little decorations. They always have music going in the background and there’s always an ABBA dance-off (and lip sync) while the final batches are going through. 

- Who sends out the Christmas cards?

Leia sends them out, purely because Han kept forgetting to post them. He still helps her write them and address them (mainly because there’s so much extended family on Leia’s side and she can barely keep track of them all). 

- Who knows all the words to twelve days of Christmas?

Han loves bellowing it at the top of his lungs really late at night bc he can. Leia knows all the words as well and they harmonise when their neighbours are up playing video games at 3am and the noise is coming up from the floor. 

- Who’s the better snowman builder?

None of them, but they live near the beach so they often go down for a swim at sunset and they usually end up making sandcastles. Han’s really good at making all the main parts, and then once Leia’s finished critiquing the castle defences she starts making the details. Then once they’re finished they jump on it so that the tide can’t get to it and ruin their creation. Or they let Chewie the dog at it, that always destroys the castle quickly. 

- Who starts snowball fights?

None of them, but Han starts the water fights when they’re swimming. Leia often instigates their night swims (like sunset/early night) because that’s when she has time. 

- Who’s the one that wakes the other on Christmas morning by playing Christmas songs really loudly?

Han can sleep through anything but christmas carols so Leia always wakes him up with an overly loud rendition of Deck the Halls at seven am because they need to get up to Port Adelaide before the traffic starts. 

- Who has the ugliest Christmas sweater?

It’s too hot for jumpers BUT Han owns the most ugly christmas t shirts. He’s the KING of ugly christmas t shirts. He’s got elf puns, ones that look like a sweater pattern but it’s on a t shirt and has koalas on it instead of reindeers, any number of ho ho ho jokes, you name it, he owns it. Leia likes to steal some of them to use as pyjamas during december. 

- Who still writes from Santa on the gifts?

Leia does, because Han made a throwaway comment one christmas about their being no santa at the foster home and she wants him to have that experience at least once.

Which of your fics was most different from what you usually write?

This one's hard, but after glancing through my fics: Luminous was the first time I tried my hand at a horror fic, which was fun and I would like to do again. Also, In-Law and Order and then Executor Given was me slowly testing the waters of humour and crack fics, which I've tried to write more of since then. It was a big departure from my usual angstfest.

What’s your favourite piece of dialogue you wrote this year?

...this one is really hard. There's a lot of pieces of dialogue I'm proud of! But the first dialogue that comes to mind is from a oneshot I wrote yesterday, so here's a sneak peek of something I'm planning to post tomorrow:

“None of their previous gifts have been dangerous!”

“I am still utterly furious that you made and drank that hot chocolate just because it was in a box with your name on it. You would die if you had anyenemies at a senatorial cocktail party.”

Luke snorted. “I think I’d die of boredom before they even got the poison into my drink.”

“That’s not the point!”

“I had a good feeling about the hot chocolate,” he insisted. His gaze was still fixed on the techs, and how they were—no, they were taking apart that beautiful engine, how could they? “It felt… loving. Warm. Affectionate.”

“That’s just what hot chocolate feels like, Luke.”

“This was before I even touched it. And it’s not like the cookies killed anyone either. Or the model Skyhopper.”

“I still think that was so, so suspicious.”

“I have a good feeling about this ship, too. Other than the paint job. Black is so boring.” He wrinkled his nose at it. “Maybe I can paint it yellow, my father had a yellow podracer when he was a kid…”

“Or maybe it will explode, take out half our techs, and we’ll have to move base for fear that a malicious entity knows our position.”

“I have a good feeling about this, Leia! You’ve gotta trust the Jedi instincts.” He wriggled his fingers as he said it. “Ow, that’s my head.”

When he glared at her, Leia laughed, lowering her hand. “Your Jedi instincts warn you about everything, huh?”

If you could go back and change something about one of the fics you wrote this year, what would it be?

Honestly, looking back through the fics I've written this year, I can't think of anything major I would change. I'm proud of what I did, even if I had massive trouble with it while writing. I tend to want to change longfics more, so if I had to I'd change Sparks, but the majority of the issues I had with that were from stuff I'd written in 2019 then realised was bullshit in 2021.
