Ok can i be completely honest right now? This fandom has a huge issue. A huge whitewashing issue.

Now before you say: "Oh but legos dont have races! Thats why theyre yellow!!" You dont only need skin color to imply a characters ethnic background. You can also do that with the characters other features like hair, eyes, lips or even stuff like their name. And thats exactly what dreamzzz does.

The most common characters i see whitewashed are Zoey and Logan. I absolutely NEVER see Zoey drawn black, even tho 1. She has twists (which some people draw them as just a side shave) and 2. Her last name is Okoro, indicating she could be igbo.

As with Logan it goes a bit deeper than that. As the issue takes two forms: 1. When its him being drawn white and 2. When its him being drawn asian, but extremely pale.

First, him being drawn white is obviously an issue because he is canonically asian. His last name is Chan (a surname with chinese origin), he is voiced by Vincent Tong and he is designed to look visibly asian.

(And before anyone says its eyeliner i found another character with the exact same eye print)

People often draw him slightly tan with eurocentric features and call him asian. Who the fuck are you deceiving.

Now with the pale issue: this is also an issue i see around in the ninjago fandom. East asian characters liked by the fandom are drawn to appeal to the beauty standards while the ones hated by the fandom are drawn like actual east asian people. Altough Logan is the only east asian character in the show that we currently know of, this does apply to him. And him being pale wouldnt even make sense! He is a soccer and baseball player! That kid plays in the sun for hours!

And Logan isnt even the only asian character that constantly gets whitewashed. Take a look at fanart of Nova! If i didnt tell you, you probaly wouldnt even know shes south asian! In her insomniac club shorts its revealed her last name is Patel, an indian surname btw, yet i dont see ANYONE give a fuck cause i only see white Nova everywhere.

And yes! Mateo and Izzy are also victims of this aswell! Mateo's locs are never drawn right and i see people draw him like 1 shade darker than the others and call him black 😭. Izzie is white washed aswell and sometimes, only her and NOT MATEO?? HUH??? They are siblings 😭😭

Anyways, the moment the fandom actually learns how to depict the characters, we will finally be free.

this is a Dreamzzz au where Nova's an aware dreamer, I've had to rewrite this three times Tumblr pls stop being mean to me :(

Chapter three: Insomniacs

I yawned as I leaned against my mom's printer, ok maybe I didn't have to wake up this early but these pamphlets needed to be printed. In the meantime let me explain further why I need at club, there's so much evidence to organize and theories to deduct and questions to be answered. It'd take me forever to do it all by myself, besides people want the truth! And who am I to not help give it to them?

I silently pat myself on the back for this amazing idea, my Printer finishing soon after. "Finally" I mutter before putting it into my backpack, I was already ready. The sun already up and peaking through the blinds as I zipped it up and walked out of the apartment, going down stairs quickly before running out the door. Stopping in my tracks as the blinding sun hit my permanently tired looking face, making me grimace before brushing it off and running to school. I wasn't even late, I was just excited about the prospect of a team helping me through my endeavor for the truth

I quickly walked through the front of the school, pamphlets in my hands as I looked around. Jeez, everyone looked so tired and miserable. It determined me as much as it kinda bummed me out as I spotted one of the two people I interviewed the other day, Jayden and Max. Who were walking to class tiredly, I quickly run up to them. Standing in front of them with a giddy smile on my face "Hello you two!" I greet them enthusiastically, they look back at me with confusion "uhm...hi to you too I guess" "hi" they both reply, waving out of politeness before I cleared my throat and began to recite the script I lacked before

"so y'know how people are having the same nightmares every night right? Well I want to get to the bottom of it, if you do as well join the Insomniacs!" I say as they nod along intrigued but still tired before I hand them two of the pamphlets. They looked... intrigued! Sweeet! "If these peak your interest, then meet me at class 28A during recess!" I concluded before running away to get to my next target

And in all honesty, besides some kid named "Emil" I didn't get many members. Some politely declined, some rudely declined, and some accepted by threw away the pamphlets while I weren't looking! The audacity, but back to the present. I was in Music class, tapping on my dest with my pen lightly as my teacher gave a lecture for the quiz in two days. "Did I come on too strong? Did the pamphlets not look good? What could I have done wrong?" I thought to myself as I stared at my desk, just thinking before a small sticky note was placed on my desk.

"whatya thinking abt?<3"

Written in a tacky glittery pink was on it, I already know who it is. I turn my head to Izzie who was staring at the teacher before meeting my gaze, her eyes turning to meet mine as she gave a small smile. I returned the smile with a small blush as I clicked my pen and wrote down a reply

"started a club, didnt get much traction :/"

I write down in a plain blue pen, passing it back to her. She stared at the note for a second before her eyes lit up with excitement and surprise. She quickly wrote something down in return but passing it to me giddily

"OMG?? Thatis soo cool!! Tell me what its about STAT!!!"

I chuckled lightly at how intrigued she seemed, but it'd be better if I told her out of class. Better to put it into words physically

"I'll tell you all about it after class, mkay? :)"

I responded, passing it to her. She huffed at it, writing irritatedly on the note as as I awaited her retort with amusement

Was all she responded with, I chuckle louder at it. Getting me stared at by the teacher for a second or two, making me crumple the note and put it in my pocket while staring at her nervously. She cleared her throat, letting it slide as I sigh in relief. Then on I try my best to focus on the teacher, able to actually learn a couple things but accidentally zoning out more times then I can count

Soon enough the bell rang, waking me from my latest zone out. The teacher said something about hoping we paid attention today as it was important. A bit of worry creeping up my spine as I got up and walked out the classroom, but I brushed it off quickly as Izzie ran up to me. "Class time's up, now spill the details!" She basically demanded a playful edge to her tone as I matched her energy for the most part "ok ok! Lemme give you a pamphlet first" I say kindly as she basically vibrates with excitement.

I grab an extra from my pocket, a little crumpled but it was still readable and I hand it to her. "So you know how everyone's having the same nightmares right? So I made this club in order to get to the bottom of this, we have all kinds of theories! Alien's, the School meatloaf for some reason, and my personal pick a group of dream agents who..." I pause for a second as I stared at Izzie, her face clearly pale as she stared at the pamphlet in front of her. Dang it, I quickly look at the pamphlet in front of her as well "I knew it was the pamphlets, I definitely need to make them look more... serious looking" I muttered,

She laughed, handing me back the pamphlet as she did so "heheh-ha! Y-Yea these totally lack seriousness-I mean these probably don't look for the demographic they're for!" She agreed as we walked together, I spotted a group of people next to Mr Oz's class. I recognized them, Izzie's Sheepweek team and her new bestie's. Not that I was salty though, obviously not. But I haven't given a pamphlet to any of them so...

"excuse me for a moment" I say to Izzie before i run up to them, I hear the blond one say "it looks like all of them had a rough night", and so I find my way to but in. "Oh its much more than one night, and it's definitely more than your run of the kill insomnia" I cut in, walking closer to them as I spoke "what do you mean?" Izzie's brother, Mateo speaks up. He's ok, don't have anything against him really. Heard he's a good artist too

"hundreds of students are suffering under the same terrifying yellow eye, haunting their dreams" I continue, changing my approach slightly in hopes of them humoring me at the least "no doubt at least one of you has seen it too." I say as they nod in agreement, I sigh "I knew it," I agree, feeling a bit bad although I knew there was nothing I truly could do besides this "join the Insomniacs," I concluded calmly, handing the blond one a pamphlet

"Insomniac club" he mutters "ok, I thought it was a joke" he speaks up in slight disbelief. "Far from" I reply with a shake of my head, "we are dedicated to finding the truth behind the nightmares, and figuring out the conspiracy's behind them." I explain, not wanting to seem like I know more than I let on. Like I'd wanna explain anything about my dreams, "our main theories are..Aliens, The schools meatloaf, and my personal pick. A shadowy group of dream agents, operating in the dark" I continue, a little unimpressed with the theories I've gathered. But hey I did want them so I can't exactly complain

"hey, that looks like-" one of them points out as Izzie walks near them, letting me speak before she starts. Him being cut off for some reason before I speak up once more. "This?" I start pointing at the green blob on the pamphlet "is what we've collectively decided to call, X-blob. It appears in more dreams then I can count, and it does support the alien theory I guess" I grimace before getting back on topic "but it's hard to say, anyways. I gotta keep handing these to people, we meet at recess in classroom 28A!" I wave goodbye before spotting someone I haven't given a pamphlet to.

Most of the day just went like that, handing out pamphlets and trying different approaches to no avai. Until soon enough the first meeting within the Insomniacs started..this is probably gonna be fine.
