20240211: the History of LEGO Castle day 042. 6081-1 King's Mountain Fortress (1990, 438 pieces, 120 different parts) The King's Mountain Fortress is a mostly light gray castle with large brown double doors covered by a black drawbridge, a brown and green tree on the back corner, and a two story tower at the back of the castle behind the gate. The fortress is built on a green raised 32x32 baseplate with printed rock patterns and a large ramp. The set comes with eight minifigures and two horses, one black with a red saddle and one white with a red and yellow lion print barding. The minifigures include: -A glow-in-the-dark ghost, the second one so far in castle sets. -A knight with a dark gray visor on a dark gray helmet with dark gray armor over a red torso with blue arms and the silver printed breastplate pattern and black legs with a red belt. -A knight with a dark gray visor on a dark gray helmet with dark gray armor over a red torso with blue arms and the silver printed breastplate pattern and blue legs with a black belt. -Two Lion Knight guards with dark gray axe-wielder helmets, blue torsos with red arms and the triangular gold lion on a blue back ground with a gold border and black legs with a read belt. -Two knights with red torsos and blue arms and the silver scale mail print with black legs and a red belt. -A "maiden" with a red cone hat, a yellow printed minifigure head with black bangs and thick red lipstick, a white torso with a printed corset hinting at cleavage with a beaded blue necklace and white arms, and a blue 2x2x2 plain slope as a dress. New and unique parts for this set include -The 32x32 raised baseplate, only found in this set and 6086-1 Black Knight's Castle. This mold was also used in the blue and light gray pattern for 6276-1 Eldorado Fortress from 1989. -The black parrot, only found in this one set. -The white and blue corset torso, which was only found in this set, though the white pirate corset torso was distributed in 1989 from 6285-1 Black Seas Barracuda and the green corset torso came out in 1990 with 6071-1 the Forestmen's River Crossing, though this is the first corest torso to be paired with a slope designed to represent a dress. The 2x2x2 blue slope without internal tube was only found in four other LEGO sets from 1990-2003. The red cone hat was only found in two other sets (6067-1 / 10000-1 Guarded Inn and 1584-1 / 6060-1 Knight's Challenge). I have no box for this set and there are no alternate builds on the instructions, but Rebrickable user Legoivo made some alternate instructions. This set is a lot of fun, with the back gate on the second floor, the small dungeon with the large dungeon door, and especially the use of the raised baseplate to have a treasure room and a secret compartment at the bottom of the interior valley. I'm not as much a fan of the drawbridge mechanism, as it's harder to roll the wheel to pull the gate up or to let it drop. But did did also like the ghost's hidden compartment next to the main gate :) This is the sixth castle set which specifically genders minifigures. This time, the gender identifications don't come because of their headgear or the label given by the catalogue, but by making a minifigure torso with a printed thin waist and a corset with cleavage, and a minifigure head with thick red lipstick. I think this actually bothers me a bit because up until this point, the minifigures had no gender, and even the four previous gender identifications were superfluous, as it was just a written label, but now, this minifigure is adding sexual characteristics. Before this minifigure, any of the minifigures could be any gender. But not anymore. And sometimes I wonder if these three corset torsos is where LEGO actively decided to value making toys for boys over toys for everyone. Parts inventory for this set can be found at either BrickLink or Rebrickable and a free download of the instructions can be found at ToysPeriod. You can find more sets by Daniel August Krentz on Brickset.

Random Set of a Day: 6103
6103 Castle Minifigures
Tumblr media
I didn't own this set until deep in my adult years and I only recently made sure to verify I have all the parts and assemble them together, but 6103 Castle Minifigures lurks deep in my LEGO memories. My best friend growing up only had a couple LEGO sets--and this was the one he had that I didn't. Together with mostly forgotten memories of a since-lost 1992 catalogue from one of my earliest sets, it was the main source of knowledge for the existence of Forestmen, and it was a window on a dimly-known era of Lions and Black Falcons (though that was augmented by owning 6081 King's Mountain Fortress and seeing 6057 Sea Serpent and 6059 Knight's Stronghold in the 1993 catalogue I didn't lose).
As such, this set had a tactile importance to my memory in the pre-Internet era that made both the 1996 Dark Forest sets and the 2001-2002 Legends releases extra-exciting. With this trio of factions in one set, this is--in a very specific sense--the forerunner of Lion Knights' Castle.
My copy of the set was not all received at once, but was assembled from a few different sources, but most of five figs came in one go: a used lot that also included a nearly-complete 6066 Camouflaged Outpost.
Year Released: 1988 I Acquired: December 6th, 2017 Origin of Fig(s): No named characters (contains 2 Black Falcons, 2 Forestmen, 1 Lion soldier, 1 peasant)
Parts Score: 3.5 out of 5 (factoring in its purpose as a fig battle pack--there isn't a single "building" piece in the set) Playability Score: 3 out of 5 (some great fig diversity, but no locations or vehicles) Minifigure Score: 4.5 out of 5 Design Score: 3 out of 5 Personal Favouritism Score: 4.5 out of 5
Android Files Notes: There's definitely potential to see each of these guys now that we've hit the Castle realms, but insofar I never owned the set in childhood, none of these smiley-faced figs has a "character" likely to make them prominent. There's an argument to be made that the all-green Forestman was meant to be Robin Hood himself (i.e. the leader of the Forestmen), but even if we give that credence, I have the same fig with Camouflaged Outpost--where he has a horse--so there's no guarantee this one need appear.

20240209: the History of LEGO Castle day 040. 6059-1 Knight's Stronghold (1990, 228 pieces, 76 different parts) The Knight's Stronghold is a black and light gray castle wall built on three green 4x12 plates. The three plates are connected by hinges, allowing the wall to be spread out, angled, or moved into a very closed wall configuration. The main part of this stronghold are the two 1x5x11 brown doors as the front part of the gate. There is also a blue and black battering ram with limited catapult abilities and a small jail. The five minifigures in this set include three Black Knight soldiers and two Black Falcons knights. One of the Black Falcon knights rides a white horse with a blue saddle and a dark gray lance with a blue flag. The knight has a black torso with black arms, a printed silver breastplate, black legs with a black belt, and wears a black helmet with a dark gray visor and a blue three plume feather, carrying a dark gray sword and a black and white split falcon shield with a blue border. The other Black Falcon knight has a blue torso with black arms and the silver breastplate print with blue legs and a black belt wearing a black archer helmet and holding a dark gray crossbow. The remaining three minifigures are Black Knight soldiers, with red torsos with red arms and silver scale mail, red legs with a black belt. Most of the sets for the next chunk of history will not have boxes, but the alternate builds from the instruction book include a different wall configuration with a catapult, a tower, a jail, and a pavillion. Brickwood Creations on Rebrickable has several alternate building instructions for the Knight's Stronghold. This set introduced the 1x5x11 brown door gate, which only comes in three other sets from 1990-1997 (6081-1 King's Mountain Fortress, 6090-1 Royal Knights' Castle, and 9376-1 Education and Dacta Castle Set). This set also introduces another part that becomes part of consistent production, the crossbow. In this first set, the crossbow comes in dark gray. This set also has the end connector bricks with a connector pin, meaning this set can be added to other LEGOLAND Castle System sets. I look forward to doing that at some point in the future because I think it would be insanely cool to see how everything connects :) I think this set also starts more of the precedent of using larger bricks and panels to take up more space and have fewer smaller parts. With that said, though, this is a very fun set! It's great to have a gate large enough to drive most of the carts and wagons so far through, as well as large brown doors that actually look like large wooden doors. The different configurations are also really neat. This is great set and a fantastic addition to the Black Knights sets. Parts inventory for this set can be found at either BrickLink or Rebrickable and a free download of the instructions can be found at ToysPeriod.

20240322: the History of LEGO Castle day 082. 6090 Royal Knight's Castle (1995, 763 pieces, 181 different parts)
The Royal Knight's Castle is very cool castle with a lot of fun features. It's a large black castle with light gray battlements and blue tower tops and roofs on a green 32x48 raised baseplate with a raised pit and stones pattern. The castle has a large tower on the back right hand side and a smaller tower on the back left hand side with a gate and portcullis towards the left hand side. The back right hand side has a staircase and additional drawbridge into the castle. There are nine minifigures, one skeleton, and one glow-in-the-dark ghost in this set. -The first minifigure has brown bangs, mustache, and beard with a red torso with printed silver scale mail pattern and black arms, and plain blue legs. -There are two minifigures with a plain yellow minifigure head with a blocked open stud, a white torso with blue arms and a yellow lion head with a yellow crown and a black mane on a halved red and white triangular background with a blue border, and red legs with a black belt. -The next minifigure only came in this set and 9376 Castle Set from Education and Dacta, which was a yellow minifigure head with wavy black eyebrows, mustache, and goatee, a red torso with black arms and red hands, a yellow lion head with a yellow crown and a black mane on a halved red and white triangular background with a blue border, and black legs with a red belt. -There are two minifigures with plain yellow minifigure heads with a blocked open stud, a red torso with printed silver scale mail pattern and blue arms, and blue legs and a black belt. -The next minifigure has a yellow minifigure head with red hair, sideburns, eyebrows, and mustache, a red torso with white arms, a yellow spiky necklace, a white and red checkered pattern with a yellow lion head with a yellow crown and black mane, and plain blue legs. -There are two minifigures with a plain yellow minifigure head with a blocked open stud, a red torso with white arms and a yellow lion head with a yellow crown and a black mane on a red and white triangular background with a blue border, and black legs with a red belt. This set has a number of new and unique pieces. -The (very cool) baseplate, red horse barding with white ruffled bottom and yellow lion head with yellow crown and black mane, and the white 8x5 cloth banner with the yellow lion head, yellow crown, and black mane on a red and white background with a blue border are all unique to this set. -The white 5x2 cloth banner with the yellow lion head, yellow crown, and black mane on a red and white background with a blue border is only found in one other set (6044 King's Carriage), the black 5x5 facet brick is only found in this set and 6250 Cross Bone Clipper, and the 6x6x6 corner wall with window is only available in black and only found in one other set, 9376 Castle Set from Education and Dacta. -The light gray octagonal 2x2x3.33 column is only found in two other sets (6078 Royal Drawbridge and 6087 Witch's Magic Manor). -Brown 1x5x10 curved top wooden-looking doors are only found in three other sets (6059 Knight's Stronghold, 6081 King's Mountain Fortress, and 9376 Castle Set from Education and Dacta). -The dark gray 9x13 grill is only found in one other castle set (6086 Black Knight's Castle) and three other sets. -The light gray 2x2x6 modified brick channel is only found in three other sets (3412 / 3418 Point Shooting, 6086 Black Knight's Castle, and 6091 / 6098 King Leo's Castle). -The black 2x5x6 castle wall panel with printed light gray stones around the window and columns on either side is only found in seven other LEGO sets. -The light gray 1x12x3 arch is only found in seven other sets. -The black 3x1x3.33 slope with studs is only found in eight other sets. -The light gray 5x5 facet brick is only found in six other sets.
