20230701: I’ve decided to spent this month celebrating what I will call “Space Day”, which is the anniversary of humans landing on the moon. starting my celebration of humans in space, today’s build was 21333 the Starry Night with 2316 pieces from 2022. we have always looked to the stars with a sense of longing, curiosity, hope, and fear. the stars, which we now know are distant planets, scattered across universes and galaxies we can only barely imagine, have inspired folklore, fairytales, religion, myths, and imagination for as long as humans have had the ability to see. LEGO set 21333 the Starry Night fully captures the longing and beauty of a world we may or may not understand. one of my favorite parts about the LEGO Ideas sets are the information paragraphs at the beginning of every instruction booklet. this booklet has some history on Vincent Willem van Gogh, a famous artist born in the Netherlands who struggled with depression. the information pages are printed in English, French, and Spanish, which add a wonderful opportunity for culture and language strengthening. the booklet also talks extensively about the official painting this LEGO set is modeled after, as well as the LEGO Ideas fan designer and the official LEGO artists who brought this set to life. more information on the history of van Gogh and his works can be found on the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) website. this set is a substantial and beautiful build. just opening up the bag and checking the bag inventory made me so happy, as blue is my favorite color and the bricks in this set are particularly beautiful, especially once the set is built. the only really redundant portion of the build was the large black frame, but that was over quickly enough to be mostly unnoticeable. I will say, though, that building the back paneling was certainly something of a challenge. you really need to pay attention to each individual instruction, the colors used for that particular instruction, and the order the plates are placed. I was also a little alarmed at the spare pieces, as at the end of bag five, you’re left with enough plates to fill a full other row of blue plates, which encouraged me to believe I had somehow missed a row. I took several minutes to verify these were left over on purpose and to count the rows before moving on to bag six. the colors on this build are truly beautiful and the design is one of the few times when I actually want to display LEGO as an art piece and wall decorations. I’m a little concerned about the lack of some sort of brace on the front underneath the area with the Cypress tree but the set oddly does stand up just as it is. I also don’t quite know what kind of screws would be best for using a wall-mounting to place this as artwork directly on the wall, but I’m sure a little extra research would clear that up, if I decide to hang this directly on the wall with the built-in technic brick on the back which I believe exists for the express purpose of hanging this on a wall like the art it is :) for all that this is a very complicated build, the instructions are very easy to follow and I enjoyed this build far more than I thought I would :)

"HOW IT STARTED" PHOTO CONTEST
As is our tradition at BC, we start the year with a photo contest because yay!
The theme of our photo contest is a nod to that Twitter trend of 2020, How It Started vs How It's Going.
Select a photo from when you first started LEGO photography and share it alongside a recent or new photo.
You can stack them on top of one another like I did, put them side by side, or add them as separate photos in your post.
Tell us about the progress you made from one point to the next. For example:
How it started:
10 years ago, I started taking quick and easy photos with my phone while I was out running errands or taking my kid to the park.
This (custom!) minifig in grass looking at the camera was typical stuff.
The more I shot, the more I wanted to slow down and be more deliberate.
So when my kid started school, I got a dedicated camera and began shooting, but very importantly not as a side activity. I set out to shoot, not buy bread and shoot.
How it's going:
In this shot of the haunted king, I've upped my storytelling beyond minifig portraits, improved my MOC building, and can shoot just as easily with multiple lights indoors as I can with available light outdoors.
📜 THE RULES:
▫️ Post two photos, one from when you began LEGO photography and one recent or new photo that shows your level now
▫️ Describe how you've progressed in your caption
▫️ Tag your post "#brickcentral how it started"
Multiple entries always allowed
🗓️ CLOSING DATE: Jan 28 22:00 CET
🏆 PRIZES:

Tumblr media
*or One (1) set of equal or lower value of winner's choosing
🔎 IMPORTANT FINE PRINT:

▫️ Shipping from LEGO is available to your country
▫️ Prizes are subject to availability and can be changed

To Tokyo by public transport, Day 11 - Desert Bus
Tumblr media
Another day. After an wonderful night I took another taxi up to the central bus station. You could just take the tram as well but ... I was too afraid to miss something.
Getting an ticket for this bus ride was not easy. In the end the page tutu.ru was able to do the job and accept western payment methods. I was not really sure if I had an valid ticket (25€). But lets find out!
The Station
The central Bus Station Nord is an old Soviet building with some makeover, plenty of shops inside and around of it, and an ugly security layer that got added in the last years. So if you want to go to the bus stations itself you need to do the whole Airport security thing. With this Russia tries to secure the inner regional borders.
Tumblr media
I had no issues with that. In front of the Station many people will ask you to carry packages for them in a bus. Needless to say that I was not crazy enough to try that.
The bus then arrived 30 minutes early. The usual small Bus thing. This time an Volvo. The driving would later turn out as 'okay' since we never had any cliffs beside us and aaloot of free sign ahead.
An funny thing about the security was, that just 5 minutes after leaving the secured area, we just had a stop on the Mal behind the station to pick up some other people. Well....
Tumblr media
(the scheduled stations: city, city, city, city, desert cafe, city)
Desert Journey
The whole journey was pleasant but long. After leaving the south Russian region you will see the Islamic focused side of Russia with many big buildings in the cities as well as various people here and there. I mean, I was never close to this big buildings. But my worldwide experience was that this prestige Buildings are empty most of the time. I wish I could had spend more time in Grosny.
But soon after Grosny the landscape goes down to desert alike states. And its getting ... kind of boring. At least internet works most of the time which is again amazing compared to german standards.
The Bus is scheduled to take 8,5h for the whole things. It turned out to be 11 hours. And I don't think that we lost some time on any point. Even the inner Russian border was smooth.
Tumblr media
Arrival
We arrived at about 22 o'clock and the first thing then was that my Hotel, the Orion Hotel, denied to take me in. For some absurd reason that I understood as, that they never had an E-Visa ever before.
So. Where to get an hotel on 22:30? I decided to check into the next hotel that I saw, the Cosmos Hotel. I'm here right now. And its okay. Very expensive for Russian standards but a 4 Star place.
In the end, I spend 120€ (ticket + 2 nights) - The next Train to Atyrau will come by tomorrow.
Tumblr media
120€ in plastic: lego 21333. btw here in russia its more then 200€ even with 50% discount.

"HOW IT STARTED" PHOTO CONTEST"
As you already know, the photo contest of the month is : How It Started vs How It's Going.
You must select a photo from when you first started LEGO photography and share it alongside a recent or new photo.
In your caption, tell us about the progress you made from one point to the next. For example:
How it started:
7 years ago when I started, I already worked with a camera but I used it in automatic mode.  This was a problem because it was the device that dictated the outcome.  And as I was impatient, I favored quantity over quality and that was my first mistake
I paid almost little importance to the decor, if it was pretty that was enough for me, even if it was inappropriate with respect to the size or the multitude of information that could blur the gaze of the public.
How it's going:
Today I attach much more importance to the creations that are in my scenes (MOC) which are much more worked.  I work exclusively manually with my camera now, allowing me to control the depth of field or even to use the technique of focus stacking to keep as much as possible an artistic background blur... thus avoiding interfering with my  topic or my story.
Today I prefer a photo that stands out with its work, it's so much more rewarding!
📜 THE RULES:
▫️ Post two photos, one from when you began LEGO photography and one recent or new photo that shows your level now
▫️ Describe how you've progressed in your caption
▫️ Tag your post "#brickcentral how it started"

"HOW IT STARTED" PHOTO CONTEST
Last week for submissions to the "brickcentral how it started" contest. This month, BrickCentral promotes a contest so that we can evaluate our photographic development. It's super interesting for each of us to look at our own work and judge our own progress.
To do this, you must select a photograph from when you started photographing LEGO and a current one, to be compared. You can post them stacked or in a carousel. In your caption, tell us about your progress, telling us how you got started and how you're shooting today. I will talk about myself:
👉How it started: I really started from the beginning, as I knew nothing about photography. I just had a cell phone and placed a minifigure in any environment I found interesting. I had no notion about composition, lighting, storytelling. Even my sense of "something interesting" to photograph was weird and without references.
👉How it's going: I challenged myself to improve my photographs. Gradually I learned about composition, lighting, I acquired a camera and some lighting equipment. I also started building sets, as I wanted to go beyond photographing static minifigures and that my photos could say something. I believe that it has evolved a lot and I know that I still have a lot to develop.
📜 THE RULES:
▫️ Post two photos, one from when you began LEGO photography and one recent or new photo that shows your level now
▫️ Describe how you've progressed in your caption
▫️ Tag your post "#brickcentral how it started"
