Especially because as an artist you may be feeling the beat today but tomorrow it may not speak to you the same way. And that’s okay too. See this is why beat leases were created. Let’s get into a little bit of the history of beat leases.

Let’s take a moment to appreciate a GOAT(🐐). Abe Bashton, creator of Beatstars, pretty much invented the concept of a beat lease. His story goes a little bit like this: he, like most, heard a beat he liked and wanted but the price to fully own it wasn’t pretty. He hit up the producer in a chat room about the beat and offered him a deal. He said instead of paying you xxx amount of dollars I’ll pay you less BUT under one condition: you can still profit from the beat. Meaning the producer would still own the beat and make money from the beat, it’s just that the person buying the lease would have certain rights to the beat as well. This is called a non-exclusive beat lease.

An artist may use a non-exclusive beat lease for mixtapes and promos and may often still have the producer’s tag embedded. As an artist you may not want to use a non-exclusive beat on an album because the producer still retains the right to sell that same beat to other artists. I'm pretty sure you wouldn't want to hear another artist have your beat in their album, too. Also, a non exclusive beat may have lower sound quality depending on the lease agreement. You could get sued. Yes, you could get sued, and on the flip side, if you don’t know your rights and what you are paying for, the producer could very well take advantage of you. They might finesse you, in other words “rob”. They might rob you.

On the other hand, an exclusive beat license gives the artist full rights(Sole Ownership). The producer cannot sell this to anybody else and must take it down from sale. An exclusive beat will be more expensive in price because the artist gets full ownership, and can do whatever he or she pleases to the instrumental. Sometimes the producer will let an artist make a reasonable offer(💰) for the exclusive rights. Usually you would want to buy an exclusive lease for an album or something very serious like submitting it to record labels.

Something a little different for me, a harsh noise take on a flat out punk rock track. Not post-punk or industrial, straight up punk. I started off intending to do a cover of the song Love Canal (done by the same band), and while I was able to get the instrumental down (including several synth solo sections) I never got down a vocal track I was satisfied with. I then listened over the B-side of the Love Canal single and realized that I was a fuckin’ idiot, I had the song for me literally right after the track I flunked. The main gimmick with this track is that aside from the main synth, all the instruments were made of found sounds. The vocals were essentially done in one take. I wasn’t really driven to use a midi drum kit, I used random objects on my desk for the percussive sections. The kick drum is the sound of me slapping the table, the cymbal/high hat is me clapping my hands, the snare drum is quickly unveiling a Japanese fan and the other sorta odd drum sound is me hitting a half-empty can with my Wacom pen. No quantization was done with the audio takes to fix the timing, everything was exactly as I recorded it. It overall took a little less than an hour to record and mix the song. Also, it’s kinda fun to laugh like a crazy person. Oh, uh, and the song is also on Soundcloud too. in case you really want to have a version where some asshole tries to promote their totally legit music career boosting service.
