I wonder if any characters in the lbc speak a second language? Apart from the welsh everyone speaks cuz. Yeah.
I feel like had he been in different circumstances sel would speak like spanish or french or something. Who know, maybe he does speak a second language?
I also feel like valec speaks more languages, with how long he's been around and it would probably be useful in his broker job.
Probably the shadow king as well because his ass is so old.
I feel like alice speaks another language as well. Maybe thai? Cause she's part taiwanese? (Actually im not sure if it was taiwanese 💀 but yeah)
Is it weird to want bilingual moments? In a language i also speak apart from english
Maybe i just want to flex on myself idk tbh

More Selwyn Kane Thoughts
Back on my Legendborn bullshit — I already made a post talking about how Selwyn’s love language is canonically physical touch (I don’t make the rules). And how it all stems from the fact that for as long as he’s known, his touch has been something intrinsically tied to power and violence. It was never seen as something that could be given out of affection and care for one another, only as a display of power and as a threat. Likewise his use of aether was always in violent necessity. I’m rereading Bloodmarked and there’s a scene in Volition where Lu allows Sel to use the aether on the grounds that got me thinking and hurting (a lot).
Sel looks between us, a bright light in his eyes that I don’t expect. I’ve never seen him cast something just because. From the look on his face, I don't know if he ever has. "Thank you, Lu," Sel says.
When he rotates his wrists, light rises around us overhead, stretching wide like a cloud — and then bursts, raining down like blue embers. Tiny freworks sparking and exploding into nothing before they hit the ground.
Lu claps. "Impressive light show. And I thought Merlins were only good at making weapons."
Sel’s head is tilted back, a slow smile on his face as the aether falls round him, "So did I."
Did I cry rereading this? Absolutely. This is the first time we see Sel realising and experiencing his power not in the context of fear and violence. It’s the beginning of him understanding that he could use his power for joy - for something as simple and loving as entertaining the girl he likes. It felt like a big, yet understated, moment for him.
And I think in a way, that permission from Lu and Bree meant more to Sel than allowing him to use aether in that specific moment. It was also the acknowledgement and encouragement that he could use aether for self-fulfilment and pleasure - that he could allow himself that. Sel was always constrained by his role as Kingsmage or his own self-imposed standards brought about by a crippling fear of not being enough, but this felt like a liberating experience for him.

what each briana x selwyn shipname makes me feel like
brelwyn: the cutest, feels like the most superior of them for some reason?? very royal-ish sounding idk why; the type of name evan and russ would tease over, and maybe valec too if he was in the fandom lool
breesel: another cute one, both have their nicknames in it, feels like a plushie just so comforting?? idk why; and also i feel like william would use this one more often
selbree: similar as breesel but this one's for those who (like me) have equal love for both characters so we just kinda switch it from breesel to selbree, this one also flows really smoothly; you would never catch alice saying this
breewyn: this one i found out recently on that bloodmarked post, this one's like informal bree + formal selwyn, and honestly fits the dynamic a bit too, sounds really cute something that probably sarah or felicity or greer would use
any more that i forgot??

Finally read Bloodmarked so it’s time to fully enter my Legendborn Cycle obsession era
Bree Matthew , daughter of sons, the girl that you. Let’s put a pause on the love triangle business and discuss the plot cause whew shit just be happening but if there’s one thing about her, no matter the cost she’s getting shit done (though she’s a bit unserious). Idk which moments were my favorite in how action packed and/or shocking they were: her putting a hole through Volition as she screamed after Vera, her and Sel witnessing Nick behead that one guy, Arthur taking over her body, her in Arthur’s dreamscape and entering that dragon form, etc. Honestly she’s going through too much
I enjoyed the group that we followed. Let it be known that Alice Chen is thee best friend of all times. I just loved her and Bree’s friendship-she learned how to do Bree’s hair 🥺 that’s a real one right there. And I really loved William, he’s such a sensible and empathetic guy. Especially his relationship with Bree, the way he called her out for thinking they only cared about saving her because of the order- he’s a healer and knight which will always be a great combo and you can just feel how much he loves Bree- so big brother coded. And if Alice doesn’t wake up I’ll march into that book and start fighting people myself- 3rd book she’ll be Legendborn huh? Anyone???
The love triangle was good, like idk maybe the trope isn’t that bad. And I like that Bree was able to have these emotions and romantic interactions. Her and Sel’s interactions would have me either screaming in frustration or giggling, so yeah the kiss scene was great. But never mind that cause Nick Davis you will always be famous. The first time she did her memory walk through Arthur’s memories and pulled him in as Lancelot- two kisses and god they’re so in love. And I know Sel says he doesn’t still have feelings for Nick but idk there’s something there. The way they both love Bree how she loves them both.
I loved the new characters, especially Valec the most. The way his character circled back to Bree’s first memory walk where she saw the enslaved woman who was impregnated by the Crossroads man. I think Larc was a pretty good addition too. And more importantly I loved the community of black women Bree is gaining around her. Like I think her Root powers were more interesting in general because there was always so much to be learned about it. The Regents made me uncomfortable. Those racist old white people just trying to trap Bree. And I don’t know or care how it happens but I need someone to beat Tor’s ass. The lead up to them getting Briana out of that place, those 5 minutes had me holding my breath but when she jumped into Alice’s arms in the car I pumped my fist up in celebration.
There’s a lot I want to say and gush about this series and I definitely want to start making fanart for it. Like this series and world is just so interesting to me, so I can’t wait to see how the author follows up in the future.

Something I love about the Legenborn Cycle is the not-so-underlying discussion of whose deserving of saving. Because you're presented with the group of people who fight to keep humanity alive, they work as an underground demon-fighting monarchy with very complicated and very old rules. And our main character, the amazing, cunning, beautiful, strong Bree falls right in the middle of this world and discovers the horrible truth that's hidden behind their history.
Now. What is most important is that Bree is black, the story would not be the same with a white character. It is CRUCIAL that she is black for the story to progress. And so, racial discrimination and black history is an essential part of the story.
The story shows what POC go through evey day, what they have to endure in each conversation and also shows the importance of not forgetting history just because it's uncomfortable to tell or because it's inconvenient (because legendborn or not, what happened to her ancestors DID happen). And with all that, if you were in Bree's shoes, with the responsability to save a world in which you are mistreated, forgotten, bullied, discriminated against, would you save it? They actively try to erase the past and you have to put the other cheek so they can slap you again and STILL SAVE THEM?
But, is the act of some the doom of many? Or well, the act of many the doom of everyone, actually.
The story has so many layers that trap you as soon as page one. Tracy Deonn created such a deep story that we could die of old age discussing it.

INCOMING: A DESPERATE COLLEGE STUDENTS OATHBOUND PREDICTIONS!!!!
Tumblr media
CC @mageofspace__ on IG
TRACY!! I JUST FELL TO MY KNEES IN THE MIDDLE OF WALMART! THE WHOLE GANG!! I’m so happy to see Valec, Alice, Will, & Mariah in the flesh like wtf! But while we are here, I want to talk about some of my Oathbound predictions…because I can. ❤️⚔️💙
P.S. IF YOU HAVEN’T READ LB OR BM I SUGGEST YOU DO NOT CONTINUE! Spoilers ahead!
• Okay first, I truly believe that Bree has had her squire and kingsmage all along, Nick and Sel. I mean just with the relationships between those three, there is no way it goes any other way.
also, Alice will wake from her coma and have somehow inherited powers from Will as she was LITERALLY breathing his aether signature in. Like I’m not 100% sure how that would work, but we’ve seen it in media before, take Monica Rambeau and Wanda’s hex for an example! Maybe that interaction with magic will awaken Alice's own unique magic too, or maybe it's closely related to Bree again how the Mesmer did too in LB.
Tumblr media
Regardless, when she awakens I think bby girl will be given an even more important role in the finale of this series. Maybe like being Will's squire...
• it’s going to come out that not only is shadow daddy, IYKYK not spoiling for potential new readers who have no sense of self-preservation and are reading this anyways, is not only Sel's father but VALECHEZ’s! Like not only would that be pure comedy considering how they were at each other's NECKS in BM, but it makes sense as to why Sel was succumbing to his demonia so fast, faster than others, maybe because a little more demon than others…
•I think this new magic system that Tracy is cooking up is going to tap into Natasia and Faye’s relationship a bit more and even Sel and Bree’s.
Tumblr media
I also think it’s going to be the solution to not only Sel’s demonia, but Bree’s bloodmark, and even abatement and all these fucking legendborn oaths. I mean think about the word OATH, practically meaning something one HAS to abide by. Vera took an oath of sorts with the blood mark “one daughter at a time for all time.” The legend born and their oath of service and all this, as I call it, greedy magic which shortens their life spans, the Merlins too! What if, just what if, Faye and Natasia found a way to combine both their forms of magic (root + aether + blood craft) and created something entirely new? Something so potent and powerful, defying these “oaths” or what you could call them, curses, to cure all these things…and what if since Bree is from Faye’s lineage, sel from Natasia, what if they can do it together too.
• I think we will learn more about the Morgaine. More on Nick….hmm. A lot of LB fans keep calling him boring, but with his mom's disappearance, and the fact that Tracy is too good of an author to simply leave his arc hanging, I don't trust it. Maybe he will even go rogue, I'm not too sure ATP, but don't sleep on Nick!
Tumblr media
• Lastly for my final predictions…more like a pipe dream. I really, for the life of me, need Bree to pull a Wanda from episodes 8-9 of WandaVision with Shadow Daddy.
Tumblr media
We know Bree is smart and clever, this ain’t new! So, I need her to take what she has learned from shadow daddy, and then pull a clean uno reverse, and get out of there! EXPEDITIOUSLY!
Tumblr media
Then from there, I need her to find Sel and Nastia (preferably in some cute cabin in the woods, and Natasia needs to be a MILF) this revelation of Bree's survival prompts Natasia to discuss the above ^^^ She and Bree get to work! Sel is now cured and they can get these oaths removed!!! Once these oaths are removed, the REGENTS ARE TOAST, TOR TOO! Then we get to work on Camlann in book 4! Cuz that’s how tf Tracy does it! Period!!
THESE ARE JUST MY PREDICTIONS, NONE OF THESE ARE CANON!! All I have to say is I'm fucking so excited about this book and even though it's still two years out I'm trusting Tracy's expertise to bring us something DE-LI-CIOUS! Also is it too much to ask that if this is adapted for television to have it animated, we know how much Tracy loves and takes influence from anime... it's only fair, and I feel can make for a more accurate and dynamic visual medium.
That's all for now. PEACE.

Theory: Merlins, Morgaines, Oaths
Thinking... thinking. .. what if the way for a Merlin to break an unbreakable Oath is to die - and come back? "
Bear with me.
- The name Natasia can mean 'resurrection' (or 'born on Christmas', which is unrelated lol).
- Selwyn’s second name, Emrys, means 'Immortal.'
- Not sure which exact Celtic knot Sel has tattooed on his chest, but if it's the triquetra below, as some have suggested, this symbol represents the never-ending loop of life, death, rebirth - see a theme?
Tumblr media
I've maintained for a while that Natasia is Morgana/Morgaine/Morgan Le Faye-coded, specifically per the earlier depictions of Morgana that painted her as Arthur's benevolent protector, a healer, a scholar, and a shapeshifter over and above being a sorceress. We see Natasia take on these roles - protecting the Scion of Arthur - unknowingly Faye - being a scholar as mentioned by Sel, potentially healing him, and ofcourse she's a powerful sorceress.
Why does this matter? Because in some versions of the legend, Morgana is a student of necromancy, ie magic that involves death and resurrecting the dead, communing with them etc. but is also a catch all term for 'black magic' that's frowned upon or whatever.
Given that Erebus' nickname for Natasia is Nyx, Greek Goddess of the Night, I think it's possible Natasia practices a form of sorcery that she could have used in order to die and return, thereby nullifying the oaths that drive demonia. What if Sel ends up following the same path to be cured? What if that's why she didn't promise that Sel would be cured at all, because it's too dangerous?
Could be interesting.
Anyways just thought to share a theory, if you have other thoughts and ideas, I'm always open to discussion and geeking out together 🤯💭🤔🧐😵
See the link below for further reading on Morgan Le Faye in literature - this is such a worthwhile read, I highly recommend it! Both for Legendborn fans who are curious about the Morgaines (as I am) and for Arthuriana fans in general.

Right!! Im not black myself and i feel like im not really the person who should be talking about this, but like, yes??? She does have some genuine relationships right, and given her situation i get why she doesn't have many, but like... Yuh... I hope that they have genuine bonds so baaaad 😩🙏
(random thought, u think valechaz will be kinda present in lb3? I think so just bc tracy rlly likes him but .... Idk how)
EXACTLYYYYYYYY, LIKE THEY GON' HAVE TO DO SMTHNG BCS IF THEY JUST SOULLESS NPC ILL BECOME A HAMSTER IN A SMALL CAGE DUDE
Tumblr media
Edit: if i remember one of our convo's, isn't it fucking late at urs rn? Shouldn't u sleep? 😭
Opinion shadow king collecting black kids lol? You think zoëlle & elijah gonna become good guys? Character arcs or plots you think they will have or what role they will play?
good questions!! opinion; yeah, it's definitely gonna be an interesting plot point, but if it gets bree to communicate with even more black people in a way that doesnt feel transactional (you know, how she mainly only goes to them for help with her root, it'd be nice to see her form genuine bonds with them!!) hopefully, zoelle and elijah have genuine character arcs and personalities other than 'ward to the shadow king.' maybe zoelle and elijah will help bree escape from him, or they'll be against her. either way, they NEED to have personalities or i will be running around in circles

BLOODMARKED HOT TAKE:
[spoilers for legendborn and bloodmarked, read at your own caution ;)]
ahhhhh I actually have a lottt of controversial opinions but I think the hottest would be that bree lashing out at her ancestors was justified imo.
this is a story about a black girl, who is "the first", and finding your own purpose apart from being "the first" and I've seen a lot of people calling bree out for yelling at vera at volition, but me personally I agree with her frustration.
she has been given this whole responsibility of keeping herself safe as well as being "the tip of the spear" while having literally no fucking clue on how the hell is she supposed to use that power at all. yes vera has had her own share of struggles and I'm not saying that her trauma is invalid, but a bargain with all the ancestors was a risky move and now the price is being paid by bree. she is, after all, a 16 year old who is literally dragged into this whole mess.
what happened to vera was cruelest of them all, but that doesn't mean that bree hasn't lost anything of herself too. dragged into this unregulated deal with the shadow king himself, not to mention the fact that the piece of shit Arthur is literally manipulating her from the start, so she isn't able to use her own powers for good. and the warnings her ancestors gave?? how is she gonna use the warnings when the threat is unknown and noone has any clue about it?? on top of that everyone is constantly telling her how they've sacrificed everything so she wouldn't have to, but in the end bree has to give up everything anyways.
her ancestors have used their root for defense, but how long are they gonna keep defending?? her frustration was genuine and yes adults need to be respected but that doesn't mean that they're always right. at this time where she needs her power as an attack, her ancestors have no clue about it and keep reminding at how they ran so she wouldn't have to, but what is she gonna do instead of run??
no clue at all.

As a black reader/writer I feel compelled to talk about Legendborn and Bloodmarked by Tracy Deonn. I also want to hear what other readers think of the series and to see if I’m not alone in the way I feel about it.
I picked up Legendborn two weeks ago and finished it before the week was even over. It was everything I wanted in a book. A black main character, a magic system based on legends, a romance with a guy who is actually nice. I dove in Bloodmarked immediately and I have never been more disappointed in a book. I haven’t even finished it yet that’s how disappointed I am.
Spoilers for both books below
Bloodmarked stripped Legendborn of everything I liked about it. I mean, I loved the beginning and it felt in line with the first book, but from the second Bree escapes from the regents, it feels like a different book.
I first started feeling something was off when William, Alice, and Sel told Bree that she had to go into hiding. We had such good development from the beginning of the book—Bree is king but isn’t treated like one then Bree is finally treated like a king and starts making decisions for her people. Then we regress back to Bree is not treated like a king. Such a big deal was made out of the argument too. Bree said they were shattered, but then…everything is fine a page later. No one brings this up again.
The second thing I noticed is Bree’s friends told her she had no time to train then immediately search for someone to train Bree. I tried to give this the benefit of the doubt and assume they meant they had no time to train her while searching for Nick, but they had time to train her in hiding, but more inconsistencies kept happening.
When the gang went to the Crossroads Lounge, this is really when I felt Deonn lost the plot. We are damn near 35 chapters into this book and Nick hasn’t been found. My man was Kristoff’d. Most of the characters from Legendborn don’t exist anymore. Even new characters like Lark disappear and don’t seem to have any importance. Bree has learned nothing about controlling her powers and somehow seems weaker than in the first book. Remember, she defeated Vaughn. She punched through a hellfox. Now she needs now be rescued at every instance.
It doesn’t even feel like it’s written by the same author anymore. There is no plot. There is barely any mention of Bree’s mother, which was her driving force in the first book. And now a bunch of new, unneeded stuff is being added in.
I feel like everything about the lounge, Valec, and the other aether users could have been a spin off book without Bree. This series was supposed to be about camlann coming, which I guess waits for Lancelot to be ready.
Back to the inconsistencies. After William, Alice and Sel made such a big deal about how Bree is such a damsel and will die if she doesn’t go into hiding, the second Nick is in danger they’re like “ok bye Bree”. This one nearly took me out. There isn’t even a discussion about it. They just changed their minds for absolutely no reason.
I don’t get why Nick even told Bree where he was because when she first spoke with him he begged her not to find him because it was too dangerous. Guess he changed his mind for absolutely no reason too.
I again nearly lost it when Valec finds out that Bree is king. He not only said the pendragon was not welcome, he insinuated he would kill Arthur’s scion. He was so serious…and then said nothing when Sel, who was previously intent on keeping Bree’s identity secret, tells him she’s the king. Not one word about it. The only thing he does after is help her.
The part that made me stop reading entirely is when they said Bree was bloodmarked. First of all, don’t change canon like that. We saw it happen in Vera’s memory, why are you acting like we didn’t. Second of all, I don’t see what the point of doing that was. To me, it feels like it undermines what Vera did. Like yeah, Bree actually isn’t powerful as the product of racism, it’s because of a demon.
Don’t even get me started on Bree’s relationship with Sel. I knew from the first time she met him that the author would force them together, but I prayed the entire way she wouldn’t fall for such a stupid cliché. I was so happen when I saw the chemistry between Bree and Nick and thought I was mistaken, but now I feel worse about Bree and Nick being together. Because why would you have her kiss him for a second later to be swooning over Sel. It feels less like a love triangle and more like emotional cheating. I hate it.
I also hate how every ya author feels the need to make the girl end up with a guy who repeatedly hurts her instead of the one who treats her like the goddess she is. What are we trying to teach young girls?
I could say so much more, but in summary Bloodmarked feels more like a poorly written excuse for a love triangle than the black empowerment Legendborn was. Legendborn stood out among the crowd and it felt like something I needed. Bloodmarked is like every other ya fantasy and makes me wish Legendborn was a stand alone.
But I don’t know. Is it worth it to finish it?
