Class Feature Friday: Ardril, the Would-Be King (Champion Legendary Medium Spirit)
Tumblr media
(art by PReilly on DeviantArt)
With the champion spirit being what it is, it was surely inevitable that there would be a dragon slayer available to those seeking the power of a legendary warrior.
Unfortunately, little information is given about Ardril, the Would-Be King (not to be confused with Ardril Hestram of the Pathfinder Society), but she was an Ulfen warrior of great reknown, elevated to the status of folk hero after slaying several linnorms on her own.
This would normally qualify her as a Linnorm King several times over, giving her the right to stake her claim on her own private nation within the region. However, Ardril refused such accolades, asserting that she would only take a throne after she had slayed the legendary Fafnheir, the so-called “Father of Linnorms”.
However, the other Linnorm Kings, fearful of losing their positions of power should she succeed, or more likely, abandon that quest and take all that she was owed, sent soldiers to slay her. Though heavily injured, she survived this assassination and fled west to the mythologized Ulfen colony of Valen.
Given that she is now a legendary spirit, it can be assumed that she passed away on the trip or after arriving in Valen, but it wouldn’t be the first time mediums have called upon a spirit of a living person of legend, drawing upon the psychic impression of their deeds. Ardril’s fate is not officially recorded in the setting.
Interestingly, because of the colony’s location on the continent of Arcadia, Ardril’s spirit has spread among Arcadian mediums seeking the power of a foreign warrior and dragonslayer.
As we will see, Ardril is quite a powerful spirit for those seeking the power to take down single opponents.
As a former Linnorm King in all but actual landed title, it only makes sense that in order to attract Ardril’s call, one must defeat a dragon of sufficient might without any assistance, and then endure Ardril’s memories of resisting countless linnorm death curses. Only then will she answer the medium’s call.
She also offers a special taboo to those seeking more power. Requiring the medium to never seek or accept positions of power while bonded to her. Easy enough for a warrior not interested in authoritative power, not so much for those seeking prestige.
A master of single combat, Ardril grants the medium the ability to challenge foes in a way similar to cavaliers, though in addition to the bonus damage to their chosen target, they also pierce any damage resistance and bolster their own resistances as well.
To the most powerful mediums, however, Ardril grants an additional boon in the form of souped-up versions of the minor linnorm death curses that some barbarians tap into, charging their weapons with deadly energy and promising two crippling magical curses to those that knock them unconscious or kill them.
Interested in a medium that can challenge like a cavalier? This legendary spirit certainly offers that. You’ll have to rely on what weapon proficiencies you have, but the potential for bonus damage against high-priority targets is there. The improved death curses at high level also offer bonus energy damage and a nice bite-back when you finally go down. As such, a tanky build comes to mind, favoring the champion and occasionally the guardian spirit, maybe occasionally the hierophant as well.
Now, obviously like most legendary spirits, there is plenty of lore behind them, but it’s easy enough to reflavor any famous dragon slayer or knight as the source of this character option.
Also, consider why your character decided to pursue this spirit in the first place. Did they seek to emulate such a legendary hero? Do they share the same sense of honor, or merely reflect it when channeling the spirit? Perhaps they come from a place where duels are common and they wanted an edge in single combat?
Driven out of his clan for “hearing voices”, Margak the ogre was forced to venture out on his own, learning to survive with the help of the whispers that gave him advice and even guided his body sometimes. After a harrowing encounter with a dragon that he only barely won, he heard a new voice, one claiming to be a mighty dragonslayer.
A dragonslaying spirit called Ser Magnora has a special request for those who wish to become a vessel for her. Such interested mediums must retrieve her old sword, which is currently buried in the heart of the purrodaemon that slew her, who now wears the weapon as one of it’s many grim prizes.
Not long after the Wyrmblood pact, a bond of lasting peace between the mortals and dragons of Vindmere, was signed, rumors began to creep in that a legendary dragonslayer long thought dead had returned. In truth, the spirit of the dragonslayer has taken over the medium that sought to channel them, and aims to disrupt the peace between the two groups.

And now I have made a part 3 of the human Cookies, this time featuring the Legendaries
You know I’m noticing that recently I’ve been drawing a lot more. I mean I’ve drawn 3 pieces in the last two days and I drew stuff last week. Seems my medication is at least helping something, even if it’s not me doing actual work to get my life together like my parents hoped. But hey, it personally makes me happy I’m drawing more, so it’s at least somewhat of a win
I think I was spurred on to do this one because I was playing around with the Mii maker on my 3DS, and I was making Cookies and started making the Legendaries
I will say, the Legendaries are probably some of the more difficult characters to translate into normal humans, since their designs are more fantastical. Almost all of their hair is made of something not normal, like fire, grass or water, so I have to try and make it at least semi-cohesive. It also means a lot of hair dye
I admit, while Wind Archer doesn’t look terrible, he does look very boring, like a generic guy. But frankly I just don’t see him using hair dye, or getting a lot of piercings. He doesn’t feel like someone who would to me, and so he looks boring
On the subject of designs I’m not satisfied with, I think Sugar Swan came out the worst. I just legit didn’t know what to do with her design. I’m a proponent of short haired Sugar Swan, so I gave her that, but I don’t think it turned out the best. I also wasn’t sure how to incorporate all the wings and swan thing on her head. I got that but it’s not that great
Originally in Sugar Swan’s spot was Millennial Tree, but he wasn’t turning out great so I tried doing Sugar Swan in his spot. Maybe that spot was just cursed or something
I think my personal favorite of the bunch is Sea Fairy, I think she turned out fun. Honestly I can see her going either way with the hair dye, so might as well just give her the blue. The buzz cut thing was actually something I got from another Sea Fairy design that I really like. I was debating between her having black or dirty blonde hair, but I eventually settled on the blonde
Moonlight and Stardust were pretty fun. With Stardust, I wasn’t sure whether I should have him dye his whole hair blue or have him bleach the front of his hair. I asked on Discord and they said the latter, so that’s what I did. But also note, I realized that if I were to try and give him bleached front and also potentially blue tips, he would have had Yugi Moto anime hair, but just flattened down instead of all spiky. Like I’ve seen people draw Yugi with hair similar to it
I wasn’t really feeling it after Sugar Swan’s failed design, but Fire Spirit got my mojo back, I think he turned out good. And with that I was able to make a Millennial Tree design I liked a lot more (while also looking at someone else’s interpretation of his design and deciding to use locs as well). Maybe not the best but not as bad as it was before
I kind of threw in Frost Queen because last spot and also she is an elemental Legendary. With her, instead of her hair being dyed, it’s supposed to be that her hair has actually turned white from either stress or age, with a tiny bit of her blonde still there at the ends. Don’t know why I picked blonde other than light color though
In my head while I was drawing, I was trying to come up with human things for them to do, but I really only got as far as the Dessert guys and the Wizard guys
Moonlight is the heiress of the “Wizard’s” estate, and she lives there and is the self proclaimed custodian. I’m not really sure what Blueberry Pie and Sugar Glass are doing there, but they’re probably also here. I also don’t know what the estate really is, I just have the idea that it’s a big place that the “Wizards” used as a research place, until they just stopped using it or disbanded or died or something. Stardust meanwhile is either Moonlight’s half brother she didn’t know about, or they’re full siblings who were orphaned and then separated at a young age via the foster care system. Stardust’s journey there would be him learning of his sister and her location and then I suppose hitchhiking his way there until he arrived
Meanwhile, Sugar Swan owns this wildlife preserve, which is the Dessert Paradise (probably goes by another name but I can see “Paradise” still being in the name), meanwhile the Dessert guardians, including Wind Archer, are the other caretakers that manage and guard the preserve. Are they also Sugar Swan’s kids? Maybe, I don’t know. Wind Archer probably is though, and maybe Millie’s his dad, I’m not sure
Frost Queen I think is just an accomplished doctor who lives in a more remote area and takes care of patients with a rare condition that she specializes in the treatment of (and also contracted herself when she was younger). She also just kind of dresses like that I guess
Genuinely I don’t know what Fire Spirit does, he might just be like, Pitaya’s adopted son or works under Pitaya, I don’t know. I can’t see him with much of a job
I imagine Sea Fairy has some sort of job (that she might neglect), but I have no clue what that job would be, since it presumably impacts both Black Pearl and Abyss Monarch in some big way, so like, running an aquarium might be too low stakes. Her crush on Moonlight might be something like she met this cute astronomer one time at some sort of astronomy conference or something, but she doesn’t know where she lives and so doesn’t know how to meet her again. Moonlight also thought she was cute, but again, doesn’t know where she lives
And yeah, I think that’s about it. I hope you enjoy these designs

So, a thought was sparked. What if Pidge was a witch from Earth but thrown into space as per usual. So now she's balancing being a paladin and being a witch. Thankfully a good witch as opposed to Haggar. Lance already figured out she was a girl (at first the others, like canon, assumed male for her, but they figure it out, not that she actually hides this part in this AU), but he was a little off. He thought she was a lesbian. I wonder what witchy things Pidge did that made Lance assume she was a lesbian instead. At least he was accepting of the potential lesbianness of Pidge. Once the shock wears off, he'll be accepting of her being a witch, too.
Honestly? It'd be need to see a witch fight between her and Haggar. Gotta love witches.
Anyway, I hope y'all enjoy this one. Commissions are open and available on my Ko-fi. Until next time.

Legendary creatures: Kitsune, Kumiho, hồ ly tinh, and huli jing
Fox spirits such as kitsune (狐, きつね) of Japan, kumiho (Hangul 구미호 or Hanja 九尾狐) of Korea, hồ ly tinh (狐狸精) of Vietnam, or huli jing (狐狸精) of China are shape-shifting fox spirits, usually having nine tails. They are typically tricksters that can be either benevolent or malevolent.

The oldest version of the nine-tailed fox spirits was from China. The first story that has the juli jing was the Shanhaijin (山海经 Classic of Mountains and Seas) which was compiled sometime in the fourth century BCE, but the currently known form wasn't completed until the early Han dynasty (202 BCE - 9 CE). It contained stories fables of the pre-Qin dynasty (prior to about 700 BCE). It says '靑丘國在其北其人食五穀衣絲帛其狐四足九尾。 The Land of Blue Hills lies to the north where the inhabitants consume the Five Grains, wear silk and worship foxes that have four legs and nine tails.' The nine-tailed fox was seen as a good omen, only appearing in times of peace. However, it also says 'Three hundred li [150km/93.2 miles]farther east is Qingqiu Mountain, where much jade can be found on its south slope and green cinnabar on its north. There is a beast here whose form resembles a fox with nine tails. It makes a sound like a baby and is a man-eater. Whoever eats it will be protected against insect-poison (gu).' During the Han dynasty, the mythology added the ability to shape-shift into humans as they became older, one description of which was by Guo Pu (郭璞, 276-326 CE) 'When a fox is fifty years old, it can transform itself into a woman; when a hundred years old, it becomes a beautiful female, or a spirit medium, or an adult male who has sexual intercourse with women. Such beings are able to know things at more than a thousand miles' distance; they can poison men by sorcery, or possess and bewilder them, so that they lose their memory and knowledge; and when a fox is thousand years old, it ascends to heaven and becomes a celestial fox.'

Fox worship arrived in Japan sometime during the Jomon period (14,000-300 BCE) as evidenced by necklaces including canine teeth and jawbones of foxes. Stories from China were brought to Japan by merchants who traded and brought in as kyuubi no kitsune (九尾の狐, nine-tailed fox). In the Nihon Shoki (日本書紀, the Chronicles of Japan), which is the second-oldest book of Japanese history, mentions foxes twice, both times as omens. It records that in 657 a byakko (white fox) in Iwami Province was a good omen. In 659, a fox bit a vine a construction worker and it was seen as an ill omen. There were tales of kitsune turning into kitsune nyoubo (狐女房 fox wife) that are revealed as foxes after pet dogs that were recorded in the Nihon Ryouki (日本霊異記) book of fables during the Heian period (recorded between 787-824).

The Hồ ly tinh have specific ages that they have to reach to gain their tails. They must practice for a hundred years to have three tails and be considered a 'demon fox', for a thousand years to become a 'ghost fox' with six tails. When it gains nine tails, it's considered a 'celestial fox' and can turn its tails into humans. If the fox loses its tail, it dies. In the Đại Việt sử ký toàn thư (chữ Hán: 大越史記全書, Complete annals of Đại Việt), compiled in 1697, states that Emperor Lê Thái Tổ was saved by a hồ ly tinh when he was hiding in Lam Sơn from the Ming army. He took the time during his hiding to bury a girl in a white dress and that a white fox distracted the army when he was almost caught.

The kumiho are able to become beautiful women who seduce men to eat their liver or heart. The Chinese story entered into Korea during the Three Kingdoms period (삼국시대, from about 494-562) and state that foxes become kumiho with great age and become stronger with that age, too. The kumiho were largely viewed neutrally, though self-centered in their need for human organs and souls. It wasn't until later that they were viewed as evil, bloodthirsty fox-human hybrids that might turn into humans if they can avoid eating human flesh for a thousand years. Something unique to the kumiho is that they develop and pass along 'yeowoo geseul' (여우구슬, 'fox marbles' that they give to and then take back from humans by an action that looks like kissing. It can only remain in the human part of the chain for a year before it can kill them completely. When it's returned to the fox part of the chain, the human has no memory of the yeowoo guseul or the kumino.
