Ok so new zealand is making a tv series about journey to the west called legend of the monkey which is coming out in 2018 I have a lot of problems with this form the only picture I can find of this but let’s forget about the fact that the main cast of characters is played by white people (I mean it’s new zealand if the us has a hard time casting asian people to play asian roles with their pool of asian actors I’m sure it’s be harder for new zealand idk I’m not from there) no let’s look at the character designs for a moment

most people might think this is ok and have no idea why I find this a problem but they probably haven’t grown up watching a trilogy of tv shows based on the same source material so they don’t know that pigsy/zhu bajie is supposed to look like a pig-man or how sandy/sha wujin is supposed to look like a sand monster (then again apparently most creators of movies/shows based on this don’t know that either) or how monkey/the monkey king/sun wukong/son goku is supposed to look like a monkey (CAUSE HE’S THE GOD DAMN MONKEY KING) and basically how none of the people in the image above looks anything like the character descriptions of their characters from the book yet a hong kong drama series from 1996 has characters which look closer to those descriptions than any of the people in the image above (except Sandy/sha wujin)

I don’t care if it’s their “interpretation” of the characters make the monkey king sun wukong look like a moneky and make the pig man look like a fucking pig man how is that hard I mean for fuck sake sure the japanese tv series sayuki (also know as monkey in english) didn’t have the characters look like that but at least they tried the legend of monkey doesn’t even try to make the characters look like what they’re supposed to look like I don’t expect them to look like this

I mean that’s a high budget chinese movie but I do expect them to at least attempt to make the characters have hints of what they are like give pigsy/zhubajie pig ears or something or give wukong like a mane surrounding his face so that he resembles a monkey a little bit or since he live in a river make sand look like he/she been in the water for too long like give them pale skin redness around the eyes or something that says that they spend a large period of time in the water seriously just do something to them make them to make them look like what they’re supposed to be
