There are tiers, and the highest-ranked who have been there the longest get access to better contracts.

Constable Ke'Vril Jen is smitten with Yew and occasionally "loses" paperwork that would implicate her or someone in the guild, helping them out by looking the other way.

History

Originally called the Liquidators, they dropped the name when Yew Fargrove took control of the guild. She thought it was foolish and wanted them to be taken seriously.

momo has realised from the very beginning that there was something deeply wrong with the central 46 decree regarding kuchiki rukia's execution . like almost everyone else , she is suspecting ICHIMARU GIN to be the culprit , a stance that she maintains even after AIZEN'S “death” . she investigates him , in the hopes to bring gin to justice & to stop the atrocity that is rukia's execution from taking place .

however , when gin leads her into the central 46 chambers and subsequently seeing aizen alive & well , momo puts two and two together . BUT FRIGHTENED , SHE IS NOT . while it's true that aizen was the actual culprit behind the decree , it is the subtext of it , namely the fact that nearly everybody went along with it , that causes momo ( & tōshirō ) to sever ties with the soul society , and align herself with aizen . 

now , she leads aizen's arrancar army alongside her fellow traitors — gin , TŌSEN KANAME & HITSUGAYA TŌSHIRŌ ( her bodyguard ) .  ( default verse for most arrancar muses , shinigami & other entities . )

now with clipped wings , the phoenix is brought back as a captive into SILBERN , where she is brought before YHWACH , whose plan is to get aizen , a special war potential , to join yhwach's side .

For the fanfic ask game: 3 and 17.

19: In Underdark some of my favorite moments are Leo tripping and falling on his face. Feverish Leo cuddling up to Mike twice. In the shaft after they've fallen and Mikey hears Leo scream and goes "oh god, what happened??" Towards the end when the tunnel floods and Mikey's desperately trying to keep Leo upright when he just keels over. The comfort part in last chapter, love tired but relieved Donny and gruff Raph. And the heart to heart in Leo's bed.

In general I enjoy how Leo is written. He has a very calm and quiet presence. I'm not sure what makes the difference in this fic, but in my head I hear him as more soft-spoken than what he's usually portrayed as.( And I mean even before he starts getting sick.) I like it, feels fitting for him.

Ah, I'm glad the shaft scene seems to be well loved, that was definitely one of the high points of it for me. :D ...Leo being a little softer was actually mildly deliberate, because he was with Mikey and thus really being in Calm Big Brother mode because the situation was something he figured Mikey would find terrifying and he wanted to keep things on an even keel. (And then after that he got sick so...) It's also why he cuddled up to Mikey in that last part in sewers because he was feverish and like I can't leave him alone in the dark so I will just octopus so he knows I'm here, basically.

Anyway!

3. What’s a fic idea that you have but haven’t written yet?

Hmm. There are the two teasers I put up for TMNT, both being somewhat in medias res-- one is for '03 TMNT, in which there is a huge ambush meant to collect all turtles in one sweep; Leo escapes it only because he falls off the roof and they presume him dead (instead of merely Very Unhappy) and he needs help to track down his brothers and Casey and Splinter is unavailable for Reasons, so he goes to the only person left who can help him, which is April. He needs answers about who the ambushers were and she's a hacker. And then he still needs her for Reasons so the two of them go and try to break into a deathtrap (while meanwhile everyone else tries to break out, they'll meet halfway).

The other is '07 verse, based on events in the Leo prequel in which he tries to hitch a ride on a ship in Portugal and realises it's full of trafficked children, and he uh. Goes and slaughters every trafficker on board he can find. Which is all well and good, and never mind his hypocrisy when he goes home and lectures Raph about vigilante shenanigans, but doing so canonically starts the legend about the wrath of Enugu the Turtle God against these traffickers and the leader of the ring suddenly finds it's really hard to get people on board to work for him. So he sets out to track this so-called Turtle God down and prove to his remaining men it's just a freak that can bleed. Great! The problem is, none of them expect there to be more than one giant mutant turtle and so they track down and take the wrong one. Whoops. Anyway, Mikey has a Very Bad Day. I also threatened at one point to write a Rurouni Kenshin/TMNT crossover due to the amount of flak I got back in the day of switching from one fandom to another (I could even do it canonically, Renet sure is a character that exists). I had a whole slew of Ruroken ideas that I will now never write because the Ruroken author is scum, so alas.

In other fandoms, just briefly: The Untamed, where Wei Wuxian goes missing presumed dead in a small village where people have slowly been disappearing, only there's flute music in Them Thar Hills that's been playing steadily for days, so Lan Wangji and Wen Ning investigate. Supernatural, in which Dean fetches up in a small town on an investigation and gets supernaturally drugged out of his mind and vanishes, and there's a whole plot to bring back not quite Lucifer but the echo of him, which is good enough for those involved (it's SPN v fae); Tiger & Bunny in which Tiger apparently goes on a rampage for as much human and collateral damage as possible and everyone races to work out why; and FFXIV where the Empire find a way to tap into the Echo and drive it haywire, thus doing their best to drive the WoL mad and the scions close ranks to deal with that issue. One Piece, in which Nami steals the ship for unknown reasons (totally known reasons, she's under a compulsion laid by a Navy Devil Fruit user) and tries to do it while everybody else is offshore. Only Zoro is still sleeping on board, so. That goes down well when he wakes up. ...these will probably never see the light of day, but they are fun to think about. (The two teasers, tho. Those will get written.)

17. Are there any writers and/of stories that you consider an influence?

Not in fandom, in any specific sense. I will absolutely get some kind of osmosis inspiration from reading a whole bunch of extremely well written fics because it will affect how I write if that's what I've been soaking in all day. The Untamed is full of extremely talented writers and I channeled some of that energy to finally finish my Snowblind chapter, which had had me stuck for 13 years because I couldn't quite reach the melancholy introspect I needed for it (but The Untamed writers have that in spades). Published authors? Definitely. I can spot my writing patterning after Janny Wurts and Guy Gavriel Kay, and I picked up Janny's ellipses and Kay's Dramatic Short Sentences, and I probably got my tendency to bracket small phrases from Stephen King, as you do. Thank you! These were fun :D

This is Er Tai.

Brother of Er Kang, best friend of Yong Qi. Voice of reason, whose internal monologue throughout season 1 entirely consists of “why am I friends with/related to crazy people with no sense of self-preservation?” Got himself put on a bus and peaced off to Tibet with his wife in season 2 because he can no longer deal with all this unnecessary drama. (His wife Saiya being a Tibetan princess being another reason why this drama would never fly in this day and age. I think even in the 2011 remake she was changed to be Mongolian?)

Saiya is Xiao Yan Zi 2.0. That’s it. 

Saiya is not to be confused with Han Xiang, despite their practically identical fluffy headdress. 

Han Xiang is the Uyghur princess who becomes the legendary Fragrant Concubine, and this drama had the audacity to run with the legend of her being a magical fairy who emits a natural flowery fragrant with absolutely zero logical or scientific explanation whatsoever attempted. Because why not. 

Re Fan Bing Bing, I bet 95% of people reading this didn’t know that Huan Zhu Ge Ge was FBB’s first drama. And there’s quite a lot of tea around her role: apparently she was initially cast as Zi Wei but then Ruby Lin came along and Qiong Yao liked the look of Ruby better so FBB was demoted to a servant, a fact that if you believe cnet gossip, FBB is still salty about to this day. 

Zhang Tie Lin also reprised the role of Emperor Qian Long in a thousand other dramas after this one and became the face of Qian Long so to speak. The rest of the cast and the public still call him Huang Ah Ma even IRL. (See also when Yong Qi, Xiao Yan Zi and Huang Ah Ma opened a restaurant in France.)

Before Yanxi and Ruyi, Qian Long had such a good reputation, okay? 

Anyway, HZGG season 1 also features Empress Ulanara as the main antagonist/villian. 

Yes, this Empress Ulanara. I suggest don’t watch Ruyi after you watch HZGG. 

In a pretzel of somehow cdrama-land being not that big, the actress who played the Empress in HZGG also went on to play her own mother 20 years later in Yanxi.

The Empress got a redemption arc at the end of season 1 which was promptly abandoned in season 2 simply because Zhen Huan the Empress Dowager came back to town. Not much to say about the Empress Dowager other than the fact that she’s a stuffy old lady who despite being called Lao Fo Ye (Old Buddha) is very quick to sentence people to death. 

But she does bring along Qing Er, who is some vaguely-defined form of niece to Qian Long…or something, her father was a prince anyway, it’s not clear what kind. Qing Er is the Mary Sue (affectionate) of HZGG-verse. You’d think it’s Zi Wei, but it’s not. It’s Qing Er. Everybody loves Qing Er. Replaces Er Tai as the voice of reason and is even more chill than Er Tai when everyone around her is constantly courting death. 

Qing Er eventually becomes the Juliet to Xiao Jian’s Romeo. Xiao Jian is (apparently? It’s not like there’s DNA tests back in the days) Xiao Yan Zi’s long lost brother. This is Xiao Jian in season 2. 

This is Xiao Jian with a glow up and more depression in season 3. Yes, that’s Huang Xiao Ming. 

Anyway, it turned out Xiao Jian (and Xiao Yan Zi’s) father was convicted of treason and sentenced to death, which means that Xiao Jian blames Qian Long for his father’s death. You can see how this may cause issues for Yong Qi and Xiao Yan Zi. 

Which brings me to the only thing about season 3 other than Huang Xiao Ming that I will mention: Zhi Hua, who is HZGG’s entry into the land of harem drama. Summary: Yong Qi was forced to marry Zhi Hua, cue the Xiao Yan Zi/Yong Qi/Zhi Hua love triangle that was resolved in a way that I’m still salty about twenty years later. Let’s not get into it. 

I also just want to mention Zhi Hua because she is played by Qin Lan, aka:

This is the reason Yanxi gave me an existential crisis. But not as badly as how much Ruyi trolled me.

Huan Zhu Ge Ge (还珠格格), explained

Background: the other night, I suddenly had the OST stuck in my head. And I amaze my self by able to somehow sing the entire soundtrack?

Anyways, for those who either grew up in mainland China in the 90s or part the Chinese diaspora, Huan Zhu Ge Ge, princess returning pearl, was probably the OG idol historical. It’s adapted from a Qiong Yao novel. Huge hit across Asia. Influenced a whole generation.

Background plot — Xiao Yan Zi is a street orphan who met a girl named Zi Wei. Zi Wei turned out to be the daughter of Qian Long. Xiao Yan Zi accidentally gets mistaken as Zi Wei, takes on the title of princess, and hijinks ensues.

Perky, spunky, not super smart academically, and with a heart of gold. You know that female lead in idol cdramas these days? Xiao Yan Zi was the prototype. But also, she’s hilarious about Chinese proverbs.

The prototype Ruby Lin character. I found Zi Wei rather corny when I was 7, TBH. Angsty back story involving being the unknown illegitimate daughter of the emperor, and then later getting whumped/tortured repeatedly by the empress.

This is the 5th Prince, Yong Qi

The emperor’s favorite son. The guy you thought would be the next emperor until you read anything about history. Smart and earnest. Xiao Yan Zi’s love interest.

Qian Long’s bodyguard. Zi Wei’s love interest. Done with Xiao Yan Zi and Yong Qi’s nonsense since episode 3 of season 1. He and Zi Wei had a lot of angsty moments that 7 years old me definitely was not into.

15. Hi! So I have three fanfics that I can't seem to find and I don't know if I can send all at once or just one per request, but just in case I will leave them here:

A) A modern au in which both are young adults (I guess the title has something to do with rain/water), LZ is studying (?), WY is bored and starts trying to get LZ's attention. Soon they start rolling on the floor, the moment ends up creating a sexual tension between them and WY suggests LZ to fuck him, so they have sex.

B) Another modern au fic in which WY is accused of a crime when he's younger, perhaps in his teens (I don't remember what he did exactly or if he actually committed it), but he still ends up getting arrested and LZ is the only one who stood up to him at the time. Then a couple of years later WY is released, becomes a police officer and works together with LZ at the same police station, probably as partners. I think LZ is kinda ooc, instead of being shy, quiet and frigid, he's quite bold and sweary in this fic. Also I recall a specific part that is set by the end of the story (it could be the last chapter), a party is happening, maybe a wedding or celebration of some sort, and Wangxian goes to the bathroom to hook up or have sex. There's a chance that this belongs to another fic, but it doesn't hurt to try.

C) Last but not least, a fic that takes place during the Sunshot Campaign or a little after it, where WY goes back to Gusu, but I don't remember if willingly or against his will. At first I think he is isolated in the house that belonged to LZ's mother. He is super angry, traumatized and sometimes emotionless, he even treats LZ really bad, especially for being made some sort of prisioner. I remember the two of them having heated arguments about the situation, then it gets to a certain point when they both start to understand each other and end up together.

Maybe two collective scenes???? but it was a fic specifically pertaining to a magical property of the Lan forehead ribbons, where the Lan's spouses were ALWAYS able to take off their Lan's ribbon, no matter how knotted or intricately tied it was because magic, and after the cold pond cave wwx had pulled it off in public, once earlier in the fic, I don't remember if it was the Qishan hunt or somewhere else, when he had no idea what happened or why everyone is surprised (until lwj explains later after angsting for a bit and has him pull it off in private) and then again at the very end of the fic after they confess. Scum Villain's Self-Saving System: "Proud Immortal Demon Way" fandom anti Shen Yuan dies and is transmigrated into the PIDW world, a harem webnovel which he detested (but read all of and writes massive hate-filled comments about)...and specifically he is in the body of the main villain of the early part of the story. Determined to survive, but constrained by The System that docks him points if he acts OOC - and he dies again if he hits zero points - Shen Yuan tries to curry favor with the protagonist Luo Binghe and other characters who might be able to protect him so he doesn't befall the "original flavor's" fate. (Trigger warnings for violence, more for the book.)

Thousand Autumns: a nigh-saintly daoist Shen Qiao loses a fight so badly that he's nearly killed and left blind and with scant cultivation abilities. Worse, he has amnesia! This provides the perfect opening for Yan Wushi, leader of an evil cultivation clan, to try to turn Shen Qiao from the path of righteousness to that of darkness and thereby prove his personal belief that no one is actually good and that wickedness is the true nature of all humans. However, Shen Qiao proves much less biddable than he expects. (Iirc the only tw applicable to the available season is harm to children and starvation, and maybe implied sexual violence.)

Tianbao Fuyao Lu/Legend of Exorcism: young half-demon Kong Hongjun is happy living with his adopted demon dads, until he receives a summons to serve in the Exorcism Department to fight demons in the capital. Thus, he sets out into the mortal world accompanied by a carp demon and goes to join the Department. However, mortals consider all demons to be evil (if they believe they exist at all!) and Li Jinglong - newly appointed young leader of the Department - is a mortal...and the capital is being over run by demons aiming to take over the Empire! (Trigger warnings...not many? That I can think of? I've only seen s1 tho, there are 2 seasons, and I haven't read the book for this one. Note that it's set in the same verse as another series that has 1 season, Dinghai Fusheng Records. I've read the book for that but haven't found a good streaming source for the show so haven't watched it yet. Neither is needed to understand the other, both function as stand alone and take place hundreds of years apart).

Bonus 1: Lie Huo Jiao Chou/Drowning Sorrows in Raging Fire. I'm watching this currently! I haven't read the book yet so I don't know the overall context/premise but what I know so far is: young fire...creature?... Xuan Ji gets duped into running the Aftermath Response Team for the government organization that deals with supernatural incidents. Though he's been told it's not a very active position, he's called to duty almost immediately to deal with what appears to be a minor encounter between some hikers and a sentient tree...but turns out to have been the partial summoning of a demon Sheng Lingyuan. But who IS Sheng Lingyuan, and what will he do when his summoning is complete? (Tw it's kinda dark overall - lots of dead random people - but nothing specific in the half-dozen episodes I've watched so far.)

Bonus 2: Can Ci Pin/The Defective. I haven't watched or read it yet but now that I have Crunchyroll it's up next. All I know is that it's science fiction and the main ship is Lu Bixing x ...shit, uh, Lin something? Lin Jinsheng? Something like that. I know the ship name is Lulin. 🤣 and the one surnamed Lin has a twin sister.

Bonus 3: Dinghai Fusheng Records: I haven't found the donghua streaming yet but I've read the book and comic and I know s1 exists. Assuming it follows the book, the premise is that the last exorcist in the world, bearer of the Heart Lamp Chen Xing leaves the mountain where his adopted father (now deceased) raised him and goes into the world to seek his true protector, the person who will stand by him and fight to make sure that evil doesn't win while Chen Xing tries to bring magic back into the world so there can be exorcists again. And he finds him! Except Xiang Shu isn't the shining perfect warrior he expects...he's in jail, nearly starved to death, in a city about to fall in a siege...oh, and he hates Chen Xing. (Trigger warnings for the early parts...mostly violence? Depending how far it gets, death of a child.)

Bonus 4: Tian Ya Ke, adapted to live action as Word of Honor: not available as a donghua. Word of Honor is a loose live-action adaptation of Tian Ya Ke/Faraway Wanderers. Zhou Zishu has led the Window of Heaven, a spy/assassination organization, for the emperor for years, but he's lost everyone he cares about and he wants out so he impales himself with nails that will kill him within three years and forces the Emperor to let him leave. Wandering as a drunk hobo afterwards, he catches the eye of Wen Kexing, a mysterious man who has phenomenal but unconventional martial arts in a style even Zhou Zishu can't identify for sure. He's probably up to no good, but that is so NOT Zhou Zishu's problem. But, despite his determination not to get involved, Zhou Zishu ends up netted into the mess, saddled with an orphan he has to escort to safety, and persistently followed by the stubborn, too-slick-for-anyone's-good Wen Kexing. All he wanted was to drink himself to death in a quiet retirement, damn it! (Tw: mcd, graphic violence.)

Bonus 5: Zhenhun/Guardian: another with a live-action only. Zhao Yunlan leads the Special Investigations Department, the government office tasked with dealing with the incursion of human-like creatures with superpowers (they're ghosts in the book. But censorship). During his depts. latest case, investigating a murder on a college campus, he comes across Professor Shen Wei, who seems over-interested and also...oddly familiar? And if that was all, Zhao Yunlan wouldn't pay much mind, but then his next case ends up involving Shen Wei...and his next...and his suspicions grow. Who IS Shen Wei, and why do supernatural things keep happening around him? (TW for the show is mcd, graphic violence, probably others I'm not remembering.)

Bonus 6: Tian Guan Ci Fu/Heaven Official's Blessing: I know the whole point is that you just watched it, but on the off chance this post spreads I figure a synopsis might help people. Pathetic fallen god Xie Lian manages, through his remarkable cultivation, to ascend to godhood for the third time, but in so doing he accidentally destroys two heavenly palaces. Broke but needing to repay the money for what he damaged, he accepts a mission from the Heavenly Emperor to investigate a murderous ghost who targets brides. While doing so, he meets a strange glowing butterfly and a man in red who seems to control it, and many more of them. The other gods tell him this is Hua Cheng, one of the four evilest ghosts in the world. But is Hua Cheng really a force of devastation in the world? And why does Xie Lian think those glowing butterflies are...actually kind of cute? (Tw: nothing major for s1, minor character death I guess? Definitely more for the books.)

Hiya Stilton! TMAAF has so many amazing new ideas! What inspired you to write it?

Mostly, I was inspired by the way CQL ended and a couple of canonical plot points that I wanted to see explored further. Click below for a somewhat-comprehensive list:

1. Lan Xichen’s life cultivation and its association with qi deviation - this was directly adopted from Yue Qingyuan in SVSSS, who loses some of his life force every time he draws his sword.

2. Nie Shiyong - inspired by several fanworks that depicted Wei Wuxian as a fox spirit/huli jing, and by the legend of Bai Suzhen/Lady White Snake.

3. Wei Wuxian’s illness - CQL!WWX looks the same during the past and present arcs, but novel!WWX was revived in Mo Xuanyu’s body. I thought it would be interesting to weave in an explanation re: Wei Wuxian’s appearance remaining  unchanged in-verse.

4. Cultural differences between sects - these were invented as I went, with a little cursory research. Yunmeng Jiang’s background and lore was mostly used to illustrate the lifestyle/traditions of the present-day Jiang clan.

5. The existence of heavenly officials was inspired by TGCF, since TMAAF is a stealth crossover with the world of Heaven Official’s Blessing. TMAAF exists within the same universe because I wanted Lan Xichen to reunite with Nie Mingjue before his death, but after his time on the mortal plane was over.

6. The land-eater was directly inspired by the concept of Wei Wuxian dying from the backlash of destroying the Stygian Tiger Amulet.

It was also inspired by the Yi City arc, for obvious reasons.

7. Wei Wuxian’s interest in medical cultivation and social reform - this felt like a natural path for TMAAF WWX, given his personality.

8. Jiang Cheng’s character arc - most JC & WWX reconciliation fics are not for me, since they tend to focus on Jiang Cheng “forgiving” Wei Wuxian, and not on Jiang Cheng working through his baggage and moving forward by himself. Both brothers are living their own independent lives in TMAAF, and neither of them have unresolved hang-ups about their relationship with each other.

9. Wei Wuxian moving to Lotus Pier - this concept was inspired by Jin Ling’s new status at the end of MDZS. Jin Ling was nowhere near ready to govern a sect on his own, so it made sense for Jiang Cheng to move to Lanling to be with him. In TMAAF, this provided an ideal reason for Wei Wuxian to return to Yunmeng.

10. Wangxian’s relationship dynamic - I didn’t read much uncertainty from them during CQL, so I wanted to write a get-together fic where Wei Wuxian was happy and secure in his friendship with Lan Wangji for an extended period of time before they married/got together.

Structure

They don't have a set leader or any structure. They're mostly a club that gets together to brag about stealing something from a "friend's" home. There's petty squabling amongst them that frequently leads to ending friendships between members, but they usually make up later.

Culture

A "thieves guild" for rich people masquerading as thieves. So long as they stay out of the way of the Prowlers and their targets, they're left alone to their game of pretend.

Made up of nobility and merchants. They have reach across the region, and some have power across the country. It depends on who they are and what they do for a living, if anything.

Hello! As a prompt, can I ask for an AU where WWX says "fuck it", gives the seal to the Jins, and disappears from the cultivation world with the Wens. At first ppl are happy, then they realize letting Jin Guangshan having the seal was a huge ass mistake, and now they have to find WWX, swallow their pride and ask for help.

Untamed verse

“In retrospect, Wei Wuxian shouldn’t have given Jin Guangshan the Yin Tiger Seal.”

“What choice did he have? Jin Guangshan had him over a barrel, especially with what he did in defense of the Wen sect…”

“At least he only abused his power to defend people, rather than –”

“Shh! Don’t say it specifically. He might hear.”

Lan Wangji continued walking, his head held high, and didn’t allow any sign of his displeasure to rise to the surface. It was all well and good for the various small cultivators to regret it now that Wei Wuxian was gone, but weren’t they among those who spoke against Wei Wuxian when he was still here? It was partly their disdain and revulsion that cause Wei Wuxian to give up, to give up the seal, to retreat from the world without leaving the slightest trace behind beyond the empty dwellings of the Burial Mound…

It had been a few years now.

At first, the cultivation world had celebrated Wei Wuxian’s disappearance; in fact, the only thing they regretted was that he hadn’t been killed outright. The right way for the end of such a tragedy, they said, was a grandiose battle that would live up to the rest of his legend – but Lan Wangji knew that their real motive was so that they could say to all who listened that they participated in taking him down.

And Jin Guangshan – with the power of the Yin Tiger Seal in his hand – had become Chief Cultivator, showering everyone with the Jin sect’s riches. The Nie sect had protested, but wasn’t interested in starting another war, and all the junior sects were inclined to support it.

It hadn’t been long before that had spoiled.

Jin Guangshan had always enjoyed having things go his own way, after all – and he’d never been good at restraining himself, especially when it came to women. At first it was limited to those who didn’t have the ability to protest, but after the first one did…

The Yin Tiger Seal gave him too much power. Who could resist him?

The first time Jin Guangshan wiped out a clan, he’d come up with an excuse for it. But when he got away with that, it seemed to go to his head, and he stopped even pretending after that. Female cultivators fled Lanling in droves, whether they could afford to do so or not, and the sects who tried to make trouble faced disaster.

The junior sects turned to the three Great Sects, but they had their own troubles. Jiang Cheng’s sister had disappeared, her son with her, and Jiang Cheng was certain that Jin Guangshan was behind it, though Lan Wangji personally suspected that Wei Wuxian might have had something to do with it – assuming he could get news from wherever-he-was, he would never leave his shijie to suffer.

Lan Wangji’s own sect…

A frown surfaced on Lan Wangji’s face, just as it always did when he thought about it. Jin Guangshan had seen the noises the Nie sect and the Lan sect were making about him; he’d sacrificed a pawn to trip them up, and very successfully, too.

The former Jin Guangyao – Jin Guangshan had cast him out of Lanling and told both his sworn brothers about the various things he’d done. Obviously, everyone knew that he’d undoubtedly done it at Jin Guangshan’s instigation, but he’d still done them…and he was the only one clever enough to think of using the Song of Clarity, Lan Xichen’s gift, as a method to poison Nie Mingjue through his family’s hereditary weakness.

The revelation had very nearly destroyed Lan Xichen, and Nie Mingjue wasn’t much better. The former had largely withdrawn into seclusion, while the latter had temporarily removed himself from his role as sect leader in order to try to heal the damage. Nie Huaisang had temporarily assumed the position, nearly red-eyed with rage that reminded everyone that his share of the family inheritance was merely latent rather than absent – Lan Wangji worked closely with Nie Huaisang these days, managing the resistance against Jin Guangshan.

They got along well. Lan Wangji had his own rage to work through, too – for Lan Xichen, of course, but not just that.

For Wei Wuxian, too.

Jiang Cheng was the third member of their group. They weren’t as easy with each other, as Lan Wangji couldn’t quite let off his suspicion that he knew where Wei Wuxian was and just wasn’t telling.

Lan Wangji couldn’t blame him if that were the case, and yet…

Their efforts had borne some fruit, creating a division in the cultivation world between them – they weren’t powerful enough to attack Lanling, but Jin Guangshan was too lazy to do much more than rule his own territory and occasionally lash out at people who disagreed with him, even from a distance. Even with the Yin Tiger Seal, he didn’t have the heart of a conqueror, and that was the only thing keeping them all safe.

It wouldn’t last, though. He lashed out more and more, his temperament affected by the resentful energy, his psyche cracking – one day, he’d attack, and they’d lose hundreds of lives trying to stop him.

At least, they would if they couldn’t find someone to beat Jin Guangshan at his own game.

They needed Wei Wuxian.

Lan Wangji needed Wei Wuxian.

He was on his way to the Lotus Pier once more to beg Jiang Cheng to share what he knew, if he knew it; perhaps this time, he would be successful.

Perhaps this time, he’d be able to show Wei Wuxian that he’d stand by his side, rather than in his way

He   had   followed   into   her   footsteps   learning   medicine--learning   techniques   that   he   could   use   to   help   others   heal.   Sizhui   had   hunted   down   the   rare   to   find   Wen   texts   on   healing.   A   surprising   amount   had   been   hidden   away   in   the   villages   around   Dafan   Mountain   where   the   family   graves   were   tended   after   all.   A   blind   woman   had   recognized   him   on   the   spot   when   he   had   come   to   town   leading   a   Night   Hunt   to   deal   with   a   Shadow   Gaunt,   a   creature   that   preyed   on   life   force.   

Listening   to   her   story   it   was   certainly   one   that   could   become   a   legend.   He   smiled   slightly.   "Sounds   like   something   from   one   of   Zizhen's   storybooks--but   here   you   are."   he   mused.   "I   am   so   glad---"   he   continued   "I   followed   in   your   footsteps,   I   have   been   developing   techniques   to   counter   the   damage   done   by   music   turned   to   harm--I   have   a   technique   that   can   remove   corrupting   effecting   from   a   golden   core--all   these   achievements   would   have   likely   never   come   to   fruit   had   it   not   been   for   your   meticulous   notes."   much   of   his   own   achievements   were   for   his   family.   

The   tea   cup   came   to   his   lips.   "Though   are   you   happy---do   you   love   him   ?"   he   asked   of   her   husband.   Sizhui   knew   a   woman   could   simply   be   married   off   against   her   will   to   whom   ever   her   father   or   brother   wanted.   It   was   not   something   he   would   ever   do   to   his   own   daughter   Xia.   She   would   grow   up   knowing   she   was   loved,   knowing   she   had   choices   in   her   life,   that   she   could   choose   to   love   whom   ever   was   in   her   heart.   He   and   Chun'er   would   never   push   the   issue   with   her.   If   she   wanted   to   stay   home   and   be   his   little   princess   forever--well   that   was   fine   too.

Review Everything 6 - Arcane

My experience of League of Legends is limited to one LAN party at a friend’s house where I tried the game with a group of my friends and a subsequent basement video game party where I tried the game a second time on my own.

I wasn’t a fan.

Outside of TF2 which I almost exclusively played on Mute and Overwatch which I played almost exclusively with no mic, I have never been a fan of video games where you have to talk to the other players with your voice. Getting screamed at, insulted, and sexually harassed aren’t my idea of a fun time. So when I was introduced to the screaming chaos that was a LoL lobby I noped the fuck out pretty quickly.

All this to say I give exactly zero shits about this franchise outside of this show.

Which I kind of think was the perfect way to watch it. I had zero hangups about the way the adaptation was handled because I don’t care about LoL at all, so I got to enjoy this as just a standalone cartoon with no fandom baggage.

I really, really enjoyed Arcane. I’m not sure what the technical term for this kind of animation is, the hybrid of 2D and 3D style popularized by Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse, but I’m very excited to see it grow and evolve, and this particular iteration of is was perfect for the story being told. I mean, just the fact that every single character had their own body type and facial structure was really impressive, it’s not the kind of thing I expected from an animated video game adaptation.

I’m honestly struggling to come up with things I didn’t like about the show. It’s so well animated, the story so tight and neat, the setting to intriguing, the worldbuilding so well integrated, there’s a lot to love about Arcane.

If I had to pick one thing I didn’t like about Arcane it would be this: Jinx is maybe my least favorite character in anything I've seen this year. But that's because I find the hot and crazy child woman trope to be tiresome and not engaging, not because she's necessarily written badly. Any other negative things I would have to say would be similarly nitpicky.

Like, this was a pretty constant distraction for me throughout the show but it was more funny than anything else.

In Summary: I really enjoyed Arcane for its Worldbuilding, story, and most of its characters, and am looking forward to a second season. It’s unfortunate that one of the main characters is a trope I hate, but that would be like complaining about Batman being in a Batman movie.You can gripe all you want but you had to know it was gonna be that way going in. The rest of the show makes up for that one character for me.

Overall: 8/10
