Miss Emberfoot was about to come live here at Tiny Home Sanctuary but she had to get her leg amputated first. Surgery seemed to go well and she was adjusting to having one leg. Unfortunately she was found passed away early in the morning. We don't know what happened. Bye, pretty bird. #microsanctuary #microsanctuarymovement #pigeonsofinstagram #amputeebird #rip #legamputation #animalsanctuary #alllivesmatter #ilovebirds https://www.instagram.com/p/CBbVc0ypTDj/?igshid=1af4z761w9849

Choosing Sports over his Knee
By Manorama Singh
Would you ever be willing to remove your knee?
The question may seem out of line with only one likely response and that is: No!
But that is exactly what sports enthusiast Abdul Alim had requested his doctors to do. He requested for a surgery to remove his knee so that he will better fit the prosthetics that will enable him to pursue his passion: endurance sports.
In 2002, Alim lost his lower right leg due to a road traffic accident. Following the accident, Alim went through an extended recovery which proved to be the lowest period of his life. He battled with depression, suicidal thoughts and lost hopes.
But Alim picked himself up. In fact, he did not just get up from his troubles but instead, he ran, swam and cycled his way through! Gathering support from his family and friends, Alim decided to continue his passion in sports. Another individual that played a critical role in encouraging Alim was five time Ironman champion, Mr. Faris Al-Sultan. While the title sounded massive, from the look on my face, Alim was fully aware that the only Ironman I knew was Tony Stark. Alim very kindly explained to me that Ironman refers to a long-distance triathlon organized by the World Triathlon Corporation which consists of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bicycle ride and a marathon 26.2-mile run. And yes, all of that, is done without a break.
Mr. Sultan inspired Alim to train for triathlons. While for many this may sound highly challenging for someone with an amputation, what made this even harder was that Alim did not know how to swim freestyle! Even before the accident, Alim was active in running and cycling but he was a poor swimmer. Nonetheless, Alim learnt how to swim and prepared for his first triathlon in 2012. When asked about his future goals, Alim says: “My aim is to go for half and full Ironman. And after that… the Boston Marathon.”
His passion for sports ran so deep that he was not willing to be discouraged by prosthetics specialists that could not provide him with a prosthetic leg suitable for sports. He shared:
“In 2002, I was a below-knee amputee. But from 2004 onwards, I became an above-knee amputee. At first, my immediate family members requested for a below knee amputation which is a natural decision as they wanted to save my knee. Our knees provide us with greater stability. The problem however was that whenever I went to prosthetic shops, I could never get a suitable prosthetic leg because my stump was too long. The specialists even told me that I won’t be able to do my sports since with the current stump, I would not be able to fit properly for the prosthetic needed when I cycle”
Repeated visits to the numerous prosthetic specialists ended with such negativity. But Alim decided to carry out his own research and connected with relevant experts on this matter. His efforts paid off and he found the solution. But it was not going to be an easy one:
“They told me that if I wanted to go back to sports, I will have to sacrifice my knee. And so, I did. I had to sacrifice my flesh and blood once again. But this time, it was I who requested the doctors to amputate my knee. Not the doctors. Will anyone be willing to part with their knee? Anybody? I am. And I am happy. Now I can fit in any prosthetic leg without any problems and pursue my sports.”
Using his optimism and confidence in life, Alim has been contributing back to the society by using his life story and providing motivational talks.
If anyone is curious to know what Alim does in his free time besides endurance sports and his motivational coaching, he spends a lot of time with his 8 year old daughter and 3 year old son with whom he runs, cycles and swims. More recently, Alim has taken an interest in playing with motor cars, upon special request by his son!
As for his final message for all of us, Alim says:
“Do not be disappointed or be annoyed with the harder things in life. Try to be happy and progress with everything that you have.”
