“Come for a drive with me.”

You should have said no.

After all, who in their right mind gets into the car with someone they barely knew?

Then again, you hadn’t been in your right mind for days. Still, warning bells were flashing at the back of your head right now as you opened the passenger door to the car, hopping in without stopping to contemplate a single second further of doubt.

It wasn’t as if he was a complete stranger, you reasoned. Jaebum was someone who often frequented the coffee shop you worked at, and much like most regular customers, you had learned little details about him outside of his order you now knew how to make perfectly each and every time.

Except, you wouldn’t be doing that anymore.

Slipping the belt around yourself, you shivered due to the chill now seeping through your sodden clothing and into your bones. Before you could do anything, Jaebum had reached for a blanket from the back seat and wrapped it around you, then turned up the heating.

Had he taken pity on you and your sudden unemployment? You stared at him in small increments, growing bolder the longer you did so. Was he always this handsome or had you simply fallen for his charms of giving you a carriage ride away from your misfortune? It was easy to relish in the comforts of a warm car when outside was lashing with rain. The skies were letting loose much as you had to your boss just before. You wanted to laugh. You had the urge to cry.

Instead, you stared at Jaebum.

“Where do you want to go?” he eventually asked, eyes still on the road. Hands tightening around the steering wheel. You realised Jaebum was anxious in your presence.

He had done his part as a fellow citizen by now. He had removed you from the situation that had left you standing on the side of street staring to the heavens entirely helpless. He really didn’t need to do anything more for you. You smiled weakly. “You can just drop me off at the nearest bus stop.”

“Why?” He shot you a look and then shook his head. “No, it’s fine. I want to take you somewhere.”

“Where?” you implored and he shrugged, which made you giggle. When had you last laughed? The sound surprised you, falling effortlessly from your mouth.

It made Jaebum relax as well. “Anywhere you want to go. I’ll take you there.”

“Even if it’s far away?”

“Even then.”

“Because you’re a fellow human in this world surviving through the daily grind?” you asked and Jaebum shook his head.

“I don’t pity you, Y/N. What you said to that jerk of a man was well-deserved. What he was subjecting his staff to is illegal. You are entitled to breaks and to deny the right of someone who needs to go to the bathroom is inhumane. Sticking up for your fellow staff member wasn’t the wrong thing to do.”

“Got me fired though,” you mused with a sigh. “Which I really didn’t need since my roommate just disappeared overnight without paying this month’s rent the other day. I snapped because I wasn’t diligent enough and too self-involved with my own issues.”

“You’ve done enough,” Jaebum assured and you went back to staring at him, this time, Jaebum picking up on it and darting his eyes between you and the road repetitively. His cheeks coloured. “What? Is there something on my face?”

“Mm.”

He frowned and started to wipe at himself all over. You giggled as he grew exasperated. “What is it?!”

“You have kindness in your eyes. Do you go and save all the damsel’s in distress on a regular basis?”

“Actually, this is my first time,” he admitted, rubbing the back of his neck before chuckling. “I’m not a weird guy, I promise.”

“I wouldn’t have gotten in the car if I didn’t trust you.”

Jaebum stilled for a moment and then smirked. “How do you know to trust me?”

“Because,” you started with a roll of your eyes, folding your arms across your chest. “You openly show your emotions.”

“Really?” he glanced at you momentarily. “No one has ever said that to me.”

“Well, I just did.”

“And I just rescued you, right?”

You nodded. “Very much so. For the interim anyway. I still don’t know what to do with everything else.”

Jaebum pulled the car to a stop outside of a convenience store. You eyed him questioningly and he grinned, told you to wait there and then dashed inside. He returned with a bag of assorted foods – both hot and cold – and a couple of drinks. He placed the bag in your lap. “You haven’t eaten today, right?”

“How did you-”

“I work across from the coffee shop, remember? My desk’s view is directly over the street. I didn’t see you leave that counter once. Besides, you were fired for fighting for human rights so I assumed that meant your own weren’t being met either.”

You smiled and reached into the bag for something to eat first. It all smelt delicious and you thanked him before starting to eat. He took a packet of food out for himself before continuing with the drive.

“I have a good friend in the legal sector by the way. His name is Park Jinyoung and he works for a pretty successful law firm. I’m sure if we ran your unlawful dismissal passed him that you’d be able to sue for several claims. We definitely have a case here.”

“I can’t afford a lawyer, Jaebum.” You stared down at the food and then snapped your focus back to his face. He had been generous enough already and you began to wave your hands about wildly. “You can’t pay for that too!”

Jaebum laughed heartily. “Jinyoung can apply for funding so he can work pro bono on your case.”

“Wow, not only are you a great at picking me up out of my misery, but you’re also pretty insightful too.”

“Well shucks, I aim to please.”

Now that your hunger was somewhat satiated, you stared out the window as the darkened world whizzed by. You noticed a specific building and then frowned. “Didn’t we pass that before? Are we driving around in circles?”

“Well, you didn’t exactly give me directions on where you wanted to go,” Jaebum mumbled as a grin spread over your lips. You poked his upper arm and he glanced at you before matching your smile. “It’s not all that bad though. We’re still on a drive.”

“What will be our destination?”

“To be honest, I don’t know.” He gripped the steering wheel again and you hid your smile behind your hand. He was too adorable for you to handle. “I kind of don’t want the drive to end.”

“Really? You want to keep going all night long?”

“Until I know more about you,” he stated and you pulled your legs up so you could rest upon them. Jaebum glanced at you and then back at the road. “Is… is that too creepy?”

“No.”

“Are you sure? You can tell me if I’m being too much.”

“Too much over what?” you questioned as you noticed the flame of colour to his cheeks. You giggled. “You’re blushing.”

“Forget I said anything.”

You humour dissipated and you continued to stare at him. “Jaebum, I’ve seen you too, you know.”

“Seen me?”

“At work. Watching out your window. When I’m taking a break or out cleaning off tables, I look for you too. Maybe we’re not so different after all. Sure, you have a stable career and I… well, I don’t know what I’ll be doing now. But I guess there’s a reason you offered me this ride, much like I took it. And I don’t think that reason is different for either of us.”

A smile slowly curled up the corners of his lips and Jaebum nodded, finally glancing at you at a set of lights. His smile was overwhelming and you felt yourself mirroring the gesture back again, unable to pull your eyes off of him.

And then someone tooted from behind.

“Oh, uh well,” he muttered, driving off as soon as he checked it was clear to do so and then cleared his throat. “I wasn’t going to just let you stand out in the cold.”

“What’s your favourite colour?”

“Black or white, why?”

You smiled again. “Didn’t you want to get to know me more?”

Jaebum nodded and relaxed. “We have this entire drive to get to know each other more, right?”

“Just this car ride? I was hoping there would be more opportunities,” you admitted and he grinned.

“It’s not like I’m going to sell my car anytime, Y/N. We could take as many drives as it takes.”

<October 3rd> JD, there’s time for everything. Sometimes things aren’t clear, that’s were you need to be patient, being hasty only would make things worser. Patience is the key. It is during our darkest moments that we must focus to see the light. We only can call out his best energy, that he may able to bear the burden. We should use challenges to find our inner strenght. <November 2nd> Dear anon@ I agree with JD that Marke isn’t in touch with the reality anymore and believes in her fantasy story, otherwise she would have to face the painful reality, where she doesn’t have any future. Markle was given a fair agreement after she was kicked out of KP in Dec. 2016, therefore everyone had assumed, she will go away as it was appointed. What happened at IG was a shock. She acted then step by step to coercing her way into the RF, now she will learn who is in control.. ;)

<Jan 8th> Dear lattedah@ she got the agreement although KP happening bcs she was an 'ex’ who had access to Harry as British Royal to gather respectability. She got the Jam. invitation before the break up and she wasn’t expected using it. She crashed the wedding hence they were placed far away in order to avoid her interaction with others. She wasn’t expected for Polo either. Dec.2016 split - until sept. they only saw each other in these occasions, hence we got the faked airport pics in august. /1 ;)

Cont - the RF didn’t care about her after the agreement, she was an 'ex’, hence 'out of sight’, all the GC denials during the whole year just prove that she wasn’t acknowledged as someone who is in connection with them. She was underestimated (back then), until JD + Tumblr-team sent them the'file-markle’, but even those who have revealed her true self were caught off guard at IG and are still in shock how treacherous she acted in dealing with Harry. /2

By using Harry she wanted to get a platform from which she can make a fortune, but even her current 'status’ doesn’t help her boosting her 'career’. She lost her credibility completely. Being the wife of a senior BR member requires the willingness of sacrifice. She would never be able to bear the responsibility the 'job’ brings.. ;)

<February 6th> Dear Skippy, as it was said she got more appearances…. I didn’t say it was postponed or deleted bcs of her behaviour by announcing it herself with help of a stranger. There’s an agreement in place with contractual arrangements for a certain amount of time. Nothing had changed. I said if her 'current status’ would be 'real’, she would have followed the Royal protocol.. but she didn’t.. ;)

Dear Skippy, I feel certain Harry appreciates all the support and trust he is given by people across the world. Some things cannot be changed over night, there are rules that must to be followed.. obviously Markle doesn’t like this appearances, bcs she doesn’t want to care about 'common’ people’s concerns, talking about 'problems’, she cannot fulfill people’s expectations and she knows that. She is in hiding again, than she has to follow rules and protocols during the appearance…;)

Thank you dear JD. Seemingly Markle starts to understand the tough reality. Harry is senior Royal, according to his order of rank he will take over more charities/appearances in the upcoming period. That means sometimes he will be on duty on daily basis. His partner has to understand the case they attend, follow protocol and showing interest not just by pulling 'sadly’ faces. A lot of work is done in the background and it’s not a 'hide and seek’ game. The affected people deserve respect.. ;)

Dear ckob@ I’ve understood your ask. I just pointed out that Harry is senior Royal who just has taken over more patronages and became representative of some of HM’s and PP charities despite this 'engagement’… He is still trusted. In case of doubts concerning Harry’s future role he would have been blindsided and the charities patronage would have been given to other members. Royal patronages are taken seriously, hence there’s a reason why Harry is planned as future representative. ;)

Dear anon@ Harry was given a huge honor by 'handling’ him the patronage of the RM over. I think he knows that well. Royals don’t pass on their own charities & partronages to each other without seriously reasons.. Each issue is taken in the RPs seriously. Just recall the Obama summit with Chantal in case of Harry. Harry got more representative 'jobs’, bcs HE is trusted. ;)

The Doctor feels jealous once someone approaches Rose on the dance floor, but instead of storming in and whisking her away, he runs.

She's dancing. 

She's dancing and it's like the lights are dancing with her, the way they pulse and thrum and beam into a myriad of colors around her.

She moves with the music and you could almost forget that this club wasn't made for her, that she's millions of miles and thousands of years away from ever actually having the authority to claim ownership over the dance floor. You almost forget because she owns it all anyway, lack of legal documentation be damned. She's not "no one" tonight. 

No, she's brilliant.

She's beaming.

She's luminescent underneath the strobe lights—or maybe you're just biased—and she's having fun. So, it doesn't matter that you'd rather be somewhere else, because you know she deserves it. Deserves a little something indulgent like this every once in awhile.

You? You're standing by the wall, away from the massive throng of gyrating bodies—gyrating? really?—yet still somewhere you can keep watch on her in case she gets hurt. In case she accidentally bumps into an alien with communication problems and anger management issues, in case someone touches her the wrong way, or, maybe, in case something blows up and you've gotta be able to quickly grab her hand and run. 

(Hah. That last one actually sounds kind of fun. Your kind of fun, that is, once you ignore all the hazards and consequences and just leave it all to the adrenaline.) You try not to feel guilty about how you chose not to join her, at how you pointedly declined her earlier offer. You try not to regret how all of this just isn't your style. Old, grumpy alien, you are. You don't exactly belong here. You know better. There's a rather attractive boy shimmying his way to her side, you notice. He’s all height and perfectly coiffed hair and gentle, disarming features. Yeah. That guy, he'd belong here. He can dance with her. You can't. She notices him and she flashes him a smile. Pretty boy returns it, says something, and you can only assume he's chatting her up. Probably whipped out one of those cheesy pickup lines that are meant to be alluring but she thinks are actually hilarious because next thing you know, she's laughing. She glances at you briefly before turning completely toward him, amusement clear in the curve of her smile. He's got her attention. He's got yours, too. They speak for a few minutes, turning and twisting as the music demands, and then they move from the dance floor over to a nearby table. You can't decipher what they're saying over the confusion of the background chatter and the thumping bass, but you can tell she's enjoying his presence.

You briefly wish your arsenal of Superior Time Lord Senses included heightened long-distance selective hearing, but then you remember that you're not a creep. She might be your companion, but she's just that: your companion, and while that means you try your best to protect her it doesn't mean you get to lord over her every waking decision.

She's entitled to a private life, a life separate from you. Pretty boy rests a hand on her knee and you try not to scowl. She doesn't shake it off. She doesn't care. She’s enjoying herself.

You keep all these things in mind as he inches closer.

Swallowing down something in your throat, you realize you probably shouldn't be watching this.  She'd probably want to be alone if she actually takes a liking to this guy.

Yeah.

A private life. This is her private life. Right now, the planet is in peace. Their timeline is stable; you checked. You managed to land somewhere legitimately safe and their security measures are immaculate. It's a golden age: crime rates are low and folks are walking around with manners, even in a club. It's great.

Fantastic. You should be able to leave her alone without worrying. Just as pretty boy throws an arm around her shoulders, you turn around. In the corner, there's some poor bloke passed out on a couch, communication device in one hand and fruity intoxicant in the other, and you stride over to him.

You deftly pluck the device out of his hand, sonic through its digital genetic lock, and type out a message. The message should translate into a text for her on her rigged-up 21st century mobile, so you don't have to worry about her not being able to find you. She always checks your messages.

You tell her you'll be in the next room, where it's a just a bit quieter. Immediately after the message is sent you erase all evidence of your presence and deposit the device right where you found it, muttering a "thanks" you know the bloke who owned it isn't conscious enough to hear. Looking back up at her, you witness her startle at the sudden buzz in her pocket. You walk out of the room as she finishes reading, allowing her only a glimpse of your figure as you escape. 

It's more like a lounge than anything else. The room you've fled into seems almost subdued, a sharp contrast to the riotous dance floor on the other side of the wall. The lighting is dim and once the glass door slips shut behind you the music withdraws into the background, a muffled remnant of the scene you've left behind. While it's not nearly as crowded, the room is a far cry from desolate. You have to stride past a variety of giggling couples before you manage to make it to one of the seats in the back. Sitting down now, you recline, stretching out your legs and entwining your fingers behind you so you fold your arms and reach up to support your head. If you close your eyes, you'd be the perfect image of confident nonchalance and relaxation.

So you do. You close your eyes and you block out the wayward ambient noise all around you.

But that doesn’t mean you’ll find any peace.

The silence of your lonely mind is imposing, and yours is the only voice in what should be a thrumming sea of existence and life. You know you are alone even as others seat themselves around you, even as you sense the turn of the earth and recall how the planet thrives. Your own head works itself into a hollow cavern, amplifying every thought your restless spirit provides and echoing them back with more force, more significance than before. It’s like your thoughts are louder than they should be.

Terrified of being swept away, you try not to think of troublesome things. Things like your own feelings or the crushing loneliness surviving entails, for example. Things like the wonderful girl sitting in the next room over. Or, worse yet, how that wonderful girl transforms those feelings and chases away the loneliness. How she makes surviving seem less like a sin.

But when your brilliant mind moves at a million miles per second and your two hearts claw at away at your rib cage you can’t. You just can’t.

You're caught. You didn't really stay just to protect her. No, there's more to it than that, isn't there? She's strong, resourceful. She's always telling you how she can handle anything, and you've never doubted her, not once.

In truth, the place is safe. You had no real reason to shadow her. You just wanted to stay—to see her smile, to see her dance—all because you think she's fantastic and the sight of her so happy makes you feel like a fool. You turned away because you wanted to go to her. You wanted to walk up to her and sweep her away, wanted to distract her and take her mind off of that stranger, but you knew you couldn't. You fled because you loved her more than you'd care to admit, more than you could admit, and you knew you shouldn't. 

You're really only there for a few minutes before you feel a tap on your shoulder. It’s gentle at first, and brief enough that it quickly fades into a memory, leaving you with the impression that it hadn’t even happened in the first place. Still, it managed to shock you into awareness, so when it comes back, a bit more insistent, you can’t ignore it any longer.

You crack open an eye to gauge your assailant, maybe even to tell them to bugger off, but then you’re met with the familiar image of unruly blonde hair, tousled and tinged maroon in the dim lounge light, sweeping across slightly flushed skin. She’s standing before you, hovering right above you, the source of all your brooding turmoil. She looks almost like how she does at the end of the day, after she lets go of your hand, after you make it back to the TARDIS safely... after running for your lives.

Must be the dancing.

You release your arms from behind your head and sit up, regarding her with an inquiring expression which she promptly ignores.

“Tired?” she asks, moving to sit beside you.

“Hardly,” you reply. “Shouldn’t I be asking you that?”

“Maybe.” Her lips quirk into a smirk. “I might be a little knackered. Just a bit.”

She shifts a little, edging closer toward you. Instinctively, you lift your arm, and she moves to gather herself under it and relax into your side.

“That why you came back here? Had enough of dancing?”

She breathes out a slight chuckle. “Nah, never get enough of dancing. Jus’ figured I’d... Break for the night or something. Make sure a certain Time Lord doesn’t get too lonely,” she adds, a mischievous glint in her eye.

You roll your eyes, masking the affection spreading unbidden deep within your chest. “What about your friend back there? Wouldn’t he get lonely, too?” you ask.

She grins this time, almost like she can see through everything you do, everything you hide.

Or maybe that's just something she does and you’re a little paranoid.

“Well, you’re full of questions,” she teases, then pauses. “We were talking about you, you know.”

“Oh?”

“He thought you were after me.” Her voice floods with mirth, “Wanted to warn me or something. Like you were some sort of predator.”

“Predator?” You echo indignantly. “ Me? ”

She’s laughing now. “God, Doctor, say something that doesn't end in a question mark, yeah?”

“I’m not some sort of predator. Not the least predatory, me. Going around stalking girls?” You scoff, “Stupid.”

“I know,” she says. “But you can't blame ‘im, can you? Lurking off to the side an’ watching me... All tall, dark, and threatening in that leather jacket of yours.” You raise your eyebrows and she pokes your chest. “Don’t even try an’ deny it. Anyway, it was sweet of him. He was kind of cute...” 

She trails off and you catch yourself unconsciously pulling her closer. The movement doesn’t go unnoticed, and her grin turns sly for a moment before it becomes playful and teasing yet again. You try not to think about what could possibly be running through her head.

“I noticed. He’s your type, isn’t he? You know, a little bit pretty.”

“Might be,” she pretends to consider it. “Something wrong with that?”

“No, it's just—” just that he’s not me, you almost say, but then you shake your head. “I don't have to worry ‘bout you dragging him on board ‘cause you're a little fond of him now, do I?”

Her smile falters. You continue regardless, “What is it this time? Not the stars, I hope. A little bit unoriginal, that. Always dreamt of seeing Mars?”

“What are you talking about?” She bristles, “He doesn't—I don’t—” 

“Sure you don't.”

Her expression flares and she sits up a bit, hand pressed flat against your chest. Her warmth filters through the wool of your jumper and onto your skin. “That was a one-time thing! So I made a mistake, it’s fine now. He’s back home!”

“‘Course, it's fine,” you scoff, “S’not like that one mistake of yours destroyed everything. No, nearly kill you and condemn the entire human race, sure, but yeah. We’re good.”

“What's the matter with you?” she demands. “It wasn't a big deal before. I thought you—Why’re you bringing it up now?”

You stiffen, unborn excuses dying in your throat. Not a single reason manifests itself in that impressive brain of yours—at least none good enough to justify you and your actions—and you turn your head away, avoiding her gaze. Guilt and shame well up inside you, bubbling, rising up and burning like bile at the realization that you’re just picking a fight now. Like some sort of... child.

A stone lodges itself in the place where your stomach should be. You hesitate to respond for far too long, the silence stretching out between you both emphasized by how much easier it is to decipher the conversations of those around you. She sighs and deflates, sinking back into your arms.

She doesn’t leave you.

Reaching a hand up, you gently begin to comb your fingers through her hair. It’s soft and it tickles your cheek. “I’m sorry,” you say, achingly tender. “‘M just being an idiot. I never blamed you for anything, not really.”

A second passes. “S’okay,” she mumbles. “I know.”

You keep stroking her hair and she moves to fiddle idly with your jacket. Taking a deep breath, you adopt a lighter tone of voice. “Where is he, anyway?” you ask.

“I talked to ‘im,” she answers. “Convinced him I was fine an’ he left, easy. Y’know, he tried to seem all familiar with me so he’d scare you away. S’all it was. But I told him I knew you and you weren’t dangerous.”

Something flutters inside your chest. “Now, Rose Tyler, who told you I wasn’t dangerous?”

“Like you’d hurt me. Or anyone, you plum,” she says, and you just know she’s rolling her eyes. “At least, not on purpose. Not if you can help it. Why’d you leave all of a sudden?”

“It just... felt wrong,” you shrug. Before she could tense up you add, “No trouble. Just didn't wanna shadow over you while you were... making new friends. Bit creepy, that. Should give you some time to yourself.”

“So you left ‘cause you thought I was with someone else?”

“You could put it like that, yeah.”

She shifts a bit in your arms, shaking slightly, and you realize she’s chuckling. Leaning back a little, you peer at her questioningly. “Is that what this was?” she asks once she looks up at you. “Are you jealous, Doctor?”

At your incredulous expression, she just completely dissolves into giggles, lifting herself from your embrace slightly. You open your mouth to protest but she shushes you, snickering. “Don’t worry,” she says. “‘M jus’ teasin’. God, imagine that: you, the Doctor, jealous. Of some random bloke in a club."

You shake your head in exasperation and glance away to hide how on-point her assumption was. You were jealous of some random bloke in a club. But that... doesn’t need to be confirmed.

Once she calms down, you glance back, wary. Her giggles have dissolved into a delicate but still generously amused smile, and the look in her eyes makes your hearts stutter. They gleam, even in the subdued lighting of the lounge, and they leave you almost wondering if, maybe, she was hoping you were jealous. There’s more to her look than humor alone.  

The thought is ridiculously pleasing, too satisfying to ever entertain.

“Hey, I’ve been wondering, how’d you get to sendin’ that text? I know you don't have a mobile.”

“Borrowed it from someone passed out in the corner,” you answer easily. Her smile widens just the slightest bit at that.

“Of course. Should've guessed. Far be it from you to honestly go out and buy a mobile of your own,” she teases. “Jus’ gotta nick it from some poor unconscious bloke, right?”

“The only way to go about it, really,” you grin and she shakes her head, chuckling.

When she speaks again, her tone is noticeably softer. “But, y’know... I was really disappointed when I got that text.”

“What do you mean?”

“You were leaving. I didn't want you to go.”

You regard her, confusion contorting your expression. “I was just heading to the next room. It seemed like you had plenty enough company. Not good for much besides watchin’ anyway, and look where that got me.”

“Yeah, but... S’jus’ nicer with you there, even if you're only watching. I like you near,” she says, and for a moment you swear one of your hearts seized. It was such a simple admission, really, and completely harmless, but the way she’s looking at you leaves you hoping. You admonish yourself for the satisfaction blossoming in your chest.

Before you can register you’ve done it, you wrap your arms around her and pull her up against you. She’s practically sitting on you now, and the warmth of her body seeps through your clothes, heating up the cool of your skin. A very selfish, impractical part of you wants her even closer. You’re too busy trying to fight that impulse to ease your embrace and scoot away.

She looks at you with wide, curious eyes.

“Really?” you ask, and it takes her a second to realize what you’re referring to. When she does, the haze clears.

“Yeah.”

You duck your head until your faces are close enough to share a breath. Her nose almost brushes against yours. “Is this near enough?” you murmur, voice low. Her eyes darken, pupils dilating.

“I dunno,” she whispers. “Could be nearer...”

The intensity of her gaze could haunt your dreams at night. There’s something there, mingling in the air you share, a sort of tension that leaves you wanting. She eases closer, and she tilts her head. You’re almost there, you are, but then her eyes flutter shut and you snap out of it. Reality crashes into you like a curse. 

Pulling back swiftly, before your lips could ever really meet, your hands slide up to gently grasp both sides of her face. You tilt her head down and lift yours, placing a kiss on her forehead instead. Her eyes open and a myriad of emotions flicker across her face, providing a brief yet vibrant display of shock and confusion and everything inbetween. You’re warring with the regret rising in your chest when you pull back and plaster on a wide grin.

You tell yourself that she was just caught in the moment. That you imagined the disappointment in her eyes. Because, what else could you do? You’d break otherwise.

Cutting through the super-charged atmosphere, you speak, voice adopting a tone far too pleasantly manufactured to be natural. It’s almost jarring, and you hold back a wince.

“You’re stuck with me, then.”

“What?” she begins, and every word that follows is breathless, dazed. “What’re you talkin’ about?”

“You said you’d like me to stay,” you explain. “So I’ll stick with you. No more unchaperoned alien clubbing for Rose Tyler. Nope.”

Her grip on your leather jacket tightens. She searches your face—analyzing it, almost—so you put on the most normal expression you can while pleading, really, that she doesn’t push further and that she doesn’t ask you any questions you can’t bear to answer. She seems to find something, although you’re not quite sure what, and she relaxes. Her face falls, her shoulders slump, she sighs... and then she sends you a small smile.

“Sounds good. Thanks, Doctor.”

She shifts a bit and settles back into you. Her head hits your shoulder and she keeps it there, resting. Now, it’s your turn to sigh. You let the grin go.

“Tired?” she asks. The conversation has come full circle.

“Hardly,” you reply, just as you should. “Shouldn’t I be asking you that?”

Her breath tickles the skin of your neck. “Maybe.”

“No more dancin’?”

“Not for tonight.”

You gently ease her up, carefully moving her off of you. As your bodies shift apart, leaving you feeling more than a little bereft, you offer her your hand. “Then let’s go home, Rose.”

“Alright,” she says, and she laces her fingers through yours.

The console room is quiet once she wishes you goodnight. You’re left with only the comforting hum of the TARDIS in the background to accompany you and overall, it’s definitely much better than the club scene. No comparison necessary. You’re back where you belong.

But still, after what you’ve just done—or rather, didn’t do—you don’t really have it in you to appreciate the quiet. What were you doing, chasing after the silence? Using it as an excuse to run away when you should have known it would lead you directly to what you feared most? The quiet only reminds you of what you lost and what you could never have.

This is why you’re always moving.

Heading into that lounge, for example, was a mistake. Not only did you fall deeper into yourself and every single thought you care to avoid, but you unknowingly prompted her to come after you, wrenching her from a good time and leaving her at your mercy. Really. This is ridiculous. You’re ridiculous.

Next time, you won’t be able to pull back fast enough. You won’t remember that there are other, safer options like kisses on foreheads or cheeks or no kisses at all, even, and you know why.

You love her, you old fool. You love her.

The Collective Conscious

Disclaimer: I’m going to ask a lot of questions in the following paragraphs. These questions are rhetorical. They are a call-out to every comment section, coffee shop, police station, and living room couch where seemingly meaningless banter has perpetuated one of the oldest and most destructive narratives surrounding violence against women. If you find yourself feeling personally attacked by my critique of certain behaviors and attitudes, odds are you’ve contributed to that narrative. 

Part I: The Collective Commentary 

Think about the last time you read about a high-profile sexual harassment or assault case. Ponder the public commentary that followed. What were your initial thoughts? What did your colleagues, friends and family have to say? Keep those conversations in mind moving forward. 

A few weeks ago, actress Amber Tamblyn came forward with her experience being propositioned at the ripe age of 16 by a much-older James Woods. When she told him her age, his response was, “Even better” (… Ew.). If you’ve managed to avoid this particular conversation, it started when fellow actor Armie Hammer called out Woods’ hypocrisy after he insulted the premise of Hammer’s new movie, which focuses on a love story between a 17-year-old and a 24-year-old. This is relevant considering Woods has openly dated multiple women that are 40+ years younger than him. Tamblyn drew upon her own experience with Woods to reiterate that he has not only dated women below the legal drinking age while he was in his 60’s but he has knowingly attempted to start some sort of sexual relationship with at least one 16-year-old, leaving him with no leg to stand on in this particular argument. 

Considering the spectrum of scandal we read about on a regular basis, this would seem pretty innocuous (albeit creepy and potentially illegal). Tamblyn spoke briefly about her own experience in a 140-character tweet. Pretty black and white, right? Wrong. Keep in mind; this isn’t even a case of sexual assault. It was a short conversation that happened 20 years ago and they never spoke again. However, the mere implications of a woman speaking up about the predatory behavior exhibited by a successful man are enough to put the public on the defensive. Cue the onslaught of insults and doubts hurled at Tamblyn by complete strangers. At first, I dismissed this as more of the same old “but… but… she has no proof! How do we know she’s not lying?” bullshit but I couldn’t bring myself to. That bullshit is more than just bullshit. It’s a symptom of a much larger problem. 

For argument’s sake, let’s pretend the approach exhibited above is a rational way to react to a sexual assault allegation. If we’re going to abide by the “she might be making it up so we won’t decide on his guilt or innocence just yet” trope, let’s take a look at the numbers. Statistically, the probability of someone filing a false report of sexual assault is minimal. According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, only 2-10% of reports are false. This means that for every sexual assault reported, there’s a 90-98% chance the accuser is telling the truth. Knowing that, are you still willing to call upon the very slim chance that she’s not telling the truth as justification for your hesitance? Mere validation of her experience requires the absolute bare minimum that could be asked of you. Yet you’re hesitant to even do that. 

Why are we so weary to believe a woman who comes forward with claims of sexual assault or harassment? Why is it so much easier for us to believe that women are overly-emotional henchmen hell-bent on wreaking havoc on their male counterparts in exchange for attention, wealth, power, or recognition? How did this perception of women as vengeful, spiteful creatures become so deeply ingrained in our collective psyche? 

Why is it so much easier to believe that than it is to believe that some people are just shitty? Why can’t we accept that some men get validation from imposing their misogyny on women? How many times do we have to learn that sometimes people do awful things with no reason or explanation? How many more women do we have to cast in the shadow of doubt before we start taking them seriously? 

There was a time when I bought into this same line of thinking. Even as a woman, I was constantly looking for holes in the stories of victims, trying to discredit them without justification. I judged their path of action or inaction based on what I was sure I would have done in that same situation. Looking back, it was as if I thought negating their experiences would save me the discomfort of being forced to acknowledge the reality: Anyone can be a rapist and anyone can become a victim. Depravity does not discriminate. 

Acknowledging my misguided and regressive views is both nauseating and liberating. Owning up to my ignorance has freed me from the shackles of prejudice, discrimination, and cultural fallacies. The only way things will get better is if we, as a society, do the same.

Part II: Collective Questions 

When it comes to sexual assault, justice is a privilege afforded to few. The very least we can do as a culture is stop treating victims like criminals. We make them prove their pain is warranted before we’ll even acknowledge it. Why do we feel entitled to validating or dismissing someone’s experiences? Why do we have to first feel “convinced” before we believe a victim? 

I’ll never forget hearing these words from someone I love dearly days after my own assault: “I don’t understand why he just let you go.” He didn’t come out and say, “I don’t believe you” or “I can’t decide whether or not to believe you.” But the message was clear. He couldn’t make sense of my experience so he couldn’t come to terms with its validity. That’s the problem. Not everything makes sense. My experience doesn’t have to make sense to you in order for it to be deserving of acknowledgement and validation. 

Sexual assault is a paradox wrapped in misunderstanding and drenched in stigma. Let’s tackle some of the most common arguments/questions/statements made after someone (especially a public figure) is involved in a sexual assault allegation: 

   1. “A rape allegation could ruin his life/career so I don’t want to jump to conclusions.” 

This argument affords the rapist the same decency you’re denying the victim. There’s always a hint of “I don’t quite believe it” when this is said. You don’t want to jump to conclusions about his guilt but you’re willing to jump to conclusions about the victim’s truthfulness and possible motivations? If we’re all so worried about ruining a man’s life after being accused of sexual assault, why don’t we care even a fraction as much about ruining the lives of victims by calling their integrity into question? 

Also, let’s not forget that rape allegations rarely ruin a man’s life. For crying out loud, our current president has been accused of raping a 13-year-old and sexually harassing countless women. So let’s not pretend that the public cares so much about sexual assault that they won’t look the other way if the rapist is talented enough, rich enough, charming enough, or powerful enough. Think of all the athletes, actors and business moguls who have maintained their jobs and success in spite of such things. 

   2. “She’s probably just after his money/power/status/etc.” 

Anyone who has been through the process of filing a police report will tell you that this is just bullshit, especially if a public figure is involved. There is no amount of money, power or notoriety that will compensate for the humiliation, powerlessness, and helplessness that comes with sexual assault. This begs the question: Why is it easier to believe a woman would allege rape in pursuit of fame and money rather than the pursuit of justice and closure? 

   3. “She’s doing it for attention.” 

This feeds into an age-old trope that is both destructive and sexist. The root of this lies in the idea that women are these fragile, emotional creatures who are just one step away from complete instability. 

Not to mention, the kind of attention the public forces upon victims is most certainly not the kind anyone would want. Many victims in the public eye will experience unrelenting and unwarranted character attacks, verbal abuse, and pure vitriol. This all feeds into women’s unwillingness to report sexual assaults and only pours gasoline on the fire that is rape culture in America. 

   4. “What about (insert details about that one famous case of false allegations)?” 

Want to know why that case in particular sticks out in your mind? Because it’s a break from the pattern. If every single sexual assault was reported on, there’d have to be a 24-hour TV channel dedicated just to that. So when you compare the number of false allegations to the truthful ones, this point becomes moot. This is nothing more than a false equivalency fallacy that attempts to take attention away from the terrible nature of sexual assault by pointing out “that one time” it didn’t really happen. It’s like treating every mugging victim like they’re lying just because you heard from your friend’s second cousin that he knows a guy who lied about being mugged once. 

Part III: The Collective Changes 

Where do we go from here? 

   1. Acknowledge this for what it is: a vicious cycle we need to break free from. 

   2. Start analyzing our reactions to hearing about assault or harassment. Stop listening to that voice in your head telling you to question the credibility of the victim. Remind yourself that there’s an overwhelmingly strong chance she’s telling the truth and leave it at that. 

   3. Stop putting the feelings and well-being of the accused above the accuser. This person has very, very likely been through something incredibly traumatic and that deserves to be acknowledged. 

   4. Sexual assault doesn’t belong in the Court of Public Opinion. Put the gavel down and step away from the TV. From birth, we’re involved in this narrative (often unknowingly) that sculpts our thought process surrounding sexual violence. We’re constantly lambasted with critiques of rape victims and their accusations, some subtler than others. Many of us buy into this narrative, only to be shaken awake when we (or someone we love) become a victim ourselves. This backwards belief system is so deeply engrained in our collective conscious that more than 60% of victims will never report their assaults out of fear of being on the receiving end of all the doubt, ignorance and cognitive dissonance that accompanies reporting and talking about sexual assault. 

   5. If you’re one of those people who feel entitled to impose their opinion on everyone via online comment sections, just don’t. Fight that urge. You don’t need to explain why her story doesn’t make sense and you certainly don’t need to call her names. You don’t need to analyze the situation as if it were your own. If you don’t understand it, that’s okay. It’s not for you to understand. Humans are flawed, messy, unpredictable creatures. That’s why crimes like rape even exist. So stop trying to make sense of the senseless. Caring about others is more important than being right or wrong. 

   6. If you truly feel compelled to speak about it in any sort of public forum, only do so to offer support. There’s enough harmful rhetoric floating around the public domain and you don’t need to add to it. Be a part of the solution, not the problem. 

   7. You don’t have to believe or disbelieve every sexual assault allegation you hear or read about. Let go of that instinct and do better. If it’s a loved one, listen to them. Love them. Ask them how they’re doing. Ask them what you can do to help. If it’s a well-known public case, don’t involve yourself in destructive discussions that attempt to discredit the accuser. Again, you don’t have to believe or disbelieve. Just acknowledge it and try to learn from it. 

With so many platforms for voicing our opinions, words matter now more than ever. But it’s not just the deep dark corners of the Internet that hurt us. Our children absorb every ounce of this commentary. It’s about what we say and what we mean. It’s about the words we use and the tone in which we say them. It’s breathing life into the archaic idea that we can pass judgment on people we don’t know and experiences we didn’t have. We have to do better.
