Francis pining for Philippa (could go all the way through from the anvil moment to Flaw Valleys or could be any section of that) please.
'Such Hapless Hap' - a band AU playlist for Francis pining for Philippa, so miserable that Spotify keeps advertising me divorce counselling now
The Beatles - You've Got to Hide Your Love Away Jeanne Mas - Toute Première Fois Leonard Cohen - Ain't No Cure for Love Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - The Carnival is Over The Communards - If I Could Tell You ABBA - My Love, My Life Davy Graham - Anji Joan Armatrading - Did I Make You Up? Renaud - Mistral Gagnant Peter et Sloane - Besoin de Rien Envie de Toi Elton John - Sacrifice Kino - Ljubov' eto ne shutka R.E.M. - You Are The Everything Elvis Costello - Any King's Shilling Prince - Purple Rain Capercaillie - Coisich, a Rùin
More info/lyrics snippets below the cut
What I learned making this is that Francis is a nightmare to make playlists for, because he will listen to ANYTHING. He's not snobbish about genre at all, he has no guilty pleasures (not really. Not unless you count Philippa herself). And he's a slippery bugger who doesn't like to be direct.
So the principles of the playlist are that Francis realises he doesn't need to be at all subtle when he's getting emotional to big lush pop ballads, because nobody believes the emotions in radio friendly pop could be applicable to a Tortured GeniusTM like him. Hence: The Beatles, ABBA, Jeanne Mas, Peter et Sloane.
For the most part I tried to keep these to 1988/'89 (Checkmate-era in the AU), but obviously some tracks are earlier - again, particularly the on-the-nose big ballads that people would just hear as a showy-off/ironic cover if he played it in the late '80s. And while it's not a ballad of the pop variety, I put Davy Graham's famous guitar piece Anji in because in the '60s everyone and his dad was attempting to cover it for their girlfriends, with more elaborate flourishes etc etc to prove their skill. Francis goes back to the original and the best, naturally.
Images in the album cover are of Lucy Farrell (violinist) and Johnny Flynn.
Anyway, here are some lyrics to demonstrate:
Here I stand head in hand / Turn my face to the wall / If she's gone I can't go on / Feeling two-foot small (You've Got to Hide Your Love Away) Francis is a bit non-plussed by The Beatles, but he recognises what made them popular. His preference is for the early sub-three-minute pop songs like this that are deceptively simple but pack emotional heft. He is not immune to this song about heartbreak being seen in public.
[such insolence / in the silence / which troubles your innocence, / a game mixed with suffering] (Toute Première Fois) Oh this song sounds all sweetness and light on the surface but the lyrics aren't so sweet. Put it in the context of Rue de la Cerisaye and that particular 'first time' and it's downright dark.
I know this love is real / It don't matter how it all went wrong / That don't change the way I feel (Ain't No Cure for Love) Of course Francis loves Leonard Cohen. Of course Danny loves to play the sax part.
Like a drum my heart was beating / And your kiss was sweet as wine / But the joys of love are fleeting / For Pierrot and Columbine (The Carnival is Over) Francis? Referencing commedia del'arte and the clown who is tragically in love with his wife while she leaves him for another? It's more likely than you think.
If we should stumble when musicians play, / Time will say nothing but I told you so / There are no fortunes to be told, although, / Because I love you more than I can say (If I Could Tell You) Iconique hard-partying lefty gays had to go on the playlist.
But I know I don't possess you / So go away, God bless you / You are still my love and my life / Still my one and only (My Love, My Life) ABBA doesn't need to be subtle.
[instrumental] (Anji) See above.
Did I live before / You came upon the scene / Did I make you up / Or are you just a dream (Did I Make You Up?) This one's mainly here because I wanted it to be 'canon' that Francis is a fan of Joan Armatrading.
[And hear your laughter fly as high / As birds calls fly / To tell you finally that you have to love life] (Mistral Gagnant) Renaud sang lots of angry political songs and played behind the Iron Curtain but this album has softer shades as he was falling in love. Definitely CM-era French and feral Francis.
[I need nothing, I want you / As I never wanted anyone / You see, the day, seems just like love / I need nothing, I want you] (Besoin de Rien, Envie de Toi) Lyrically this is just as sweet as it sounds. If Francis and Philippa sing it together some time though (the afterparty where Marthe screws everything up?) then it will torment them every time it's on the radio. And it's on the radio a lot.
Sensitivity builds a prison / In the final act / We lose direction / No stone unturned / No tears to damn you / When jealousy burns (Sacrifice) BIG Elton hit here that's technically about cheating in a marriage, but also Francis and Philippa both trying to out-sacrifice themselves for each other while claiming they're doing nothing of the sort...yeah big mood
[When the night's getting still / I can hear you playing guitar / But the tune it seems so far…] (Ljubov' eto ne shutka) Francis learned about them in TRC in Russia, obviously, and this one even has a line about being alone in Russia instead of with his love so *shrug emoji*
(Say, say, the light) And she is so beautiful, she is so young and old / (Say, say, the light) I look at her and I see the beauty of the light of music (You Are the Everything) Gotta keep up the quota of queer '80s acts on here.
Please don't put your silly head in that pretty soldier's hat / You've done your duty, that's enough of that / I don't know if what I'm doing is right / I don't know if you should be forgiving / But for me it seems it means my life / While for you it could just be a living (Any King's Shilling) Again, Rue de la Cerisaye vibes, but also fits for fears of selling out and what on gives up for fame (or for Austin).
I never wanted to be your weekend lover / I only wanted to be some kind of friend, hey / Baby, I could never steal you from another (Purple Rain) Because Philippa loves Prince, and this is Prince's 'great muckel ballad' (a description of a folk song I once heard Sam Lee use).
[Come on, my love, hù il oro / Keep your promise to me, o hi ibh o / Take greetings from me, hù il oro / Over to Harris, boch orainn o / To John Campbell, hù il oro / My brown-haired sweetheart, boch orainn o] (Coisich, a Rùin) Because it's referenced in the fic I wrote that was meant to be the equivalent of the rooftop chase, and because the playlist needed some Scots Gaelic.

Twins Sign Matt Shoemaker To Deal.
The Minnesota Twins made another move as pitchers and catchers report on Thursday in Fort Myers. They signed veteran right-hander Matt Shoemaker to a one-year, $2 million deal. He can also make an additional $250,000 in performance bonuses. Shoemaker is a good starting pitcher when healthy. He has dealt with a forearm injury, a knee injury, and took a line drive off his face in 2016. He has a career 3.86 ERA over eight seasons with the Angels and Blue Jays. He owned a 4.71 ERA in six starts for the Blue Jays in 2020. He averages eight strikeouts per nine innings. Shoemaker features a two-seamer and a four-seamer between 92-93 mph, a splitter in the upper-80′s, and a slider in the lower-80′s. The Twins rotation continues to add depth as Jose Berrios, Kenta Maeda, and Michael Pineda figure to be the top-three starters. JA Happ, Matt Shoemaker appear to round out the rotation with guys like Randy Dobnak, Lewis Thorpe, and Devin Smeltzer getting innings as the year goes on. Remember, the minor league guys didn’t throw 100-150 innings last year and there will likely be an innings limit in minor league ball in 2021.
The Twins also announced the remainder of their non-roster invitees. Andrew Albers, Daniel Coulombe, Brandon Waddell, and Charlie Barnes are lefties invited. Derek Law, Luke Farrell, Griffin Jax, Juan Minaya, and Glen Sparkman are the right-handers. David Banuelos, Caleb Hamilton, and Tomas Telis will be the catchers. Royce Lewis, JT Riddle, Tzu-Wei Lin are the infielders. Keon Broxton, Trevor Larnach, and Rob Refsnyder are the outfielders. There are also a few guys invited for minor league depth in camp. Tom Hackimer, Robinson Leyer, Andrew Vasquez, Drew Maggi, Aaron Sabato, and Zander Wiel are the big names on that list. I expect the Twins to invite a few more veteran relievers as the market for bullpen arms shakes out before camp starts.

michael farrell for @gerbithats bo’s bc
27 and painfully human / gloomy / cat lover / bookworm
michael’s therapist always reiterates the fact that his passive personality and his need to fix everyone does more harm than good, because it invites people who always end up hurting him. then again, he also keeps telling him that vampires don’t exist and that’s a load of crap. what does he know, right?
(cw religion, cw suicidal tendencies and mental health)
(DEEP SIGH) ok so MICHAEL was raised the only child of a typical catholic family, extremely devout and adamant in their values. michael grew up afraid. of what? well, everything really. any little thing can condemn you to eternal damnation, according to his grandma. she used to say that they named him after an angel so he’d always be protected, but angels did nothing when his parents found out he was gay and kicked him out of the house at seventeen.
since then, he has been roaming everywhere and anywhere, wherever his feet take him and scraping to get by. despite everything that’s happened to him he’s kind and caring, or at least he tries his best to be. if his soul is already doomed for eternity, why not help the rest? he lives through other people, feeling an inherent need to fix everyone; to ease their load to a point where he’s all darkness so that others can be light. it’s not like anyone cares about him, so what’s the harm? if he dies, he dies.
his blessing and his curse is that he’s painfully unaware of his surroundings, always ending up in danger without even realizing. he’s been witness to crimes, walked the underground and made friends with mob bosses without having a clue. his humanity makes him an unknowing pawn, a blood bag and nothing more.
that’s how he met bo’s gang, the same night he got the scars on his face by being in the wrong place at the wrong time; but instead of frightening him, the whole ordeal just made him obsessed with the supernatural, yearning in a strange way for a place to belong. a pack, where who he /is/ doesn’t matter, where blood (no pun intended) is thicker than water, where the people he loves won’t leave him. even though they do… they always do.
(if he’s picked i return home on the 25th ahdkakks sorry i’m a mess)
random facts about michael:
- he’s a leftie
- he’s obsessed with vampires and wants to be turned into one so he won’t be lonely anymore
- he’s kind of a klutz and keeps getting injured by tripping on like, air
- so he’s very good at patching wounds ofc
- he’s a lightweight but masks his drunkenness well
- he plays the guitar, not super good but decent enough
- anyway here’s wonderwall
- he loves dogs but can’t have one since he’s always moving around
- he takes anxiety meds
#sorry this has nio pretty formatting but i wrote it On my way! to the airport lmao#i almost didnt send it cause im baby!! but ive never participated in a bc before#and i fell in love with bo sljdkskajn baby#ignore my typos pls#why do i have the feeling the formatting woll be horrible#PLS IM BABY#i’ll fix this when i’m at my computer rip#gerbithats#bo's bc

It's a taken for granted assumption that if they fit your profile, your product or service should be a "fit" for them. But really, how much sense does it make to have assumptions about someone you've never spoken with, much less had a conversation with? How much can you possibly know about their problems, issues, needs, time frame, budget, decision making process, or other key information? Can you imagine how it feels to the person on the other end of the phone when you presume to know what's "best" for them? They don't know you, and they don't trust you nfl jerseys. So people naturally move into a defensive place. So it's best to move away from making any assumptions when you make your cold calls. "You've got to really strike that balance."The Timberwolves will shut down the Target Center as soon as the season is over to complete a major renovation project that began before this season started. That project will make the introduction of a new logo and new colors easier to implement because an existing arena would need to be retrofitted with the new look."There are teams that try to do this with an existing arena and they spend $6 million changing out elements all throughout the arena," Wolves chief strategy officer Ted Johnson said.Still, Johnson estimated the total cost to be in the millions of dollars for changing a logo that is on everything from the facing of the team's practice facility to team stationary. There are also fees in the "hundreds of thousands" for registering the new trademarks of a franchise that does business across the world."The actual logo, the jerseys, those are the things that fans see and assume would happen," Casson said.

Conservative: Sexually interfering with a child is wrong. Leftist: Haha, you just wanna be a child, doncha? But seriously, Cory Doctorow is making the argument here that the amount of complexity is NOT increasing? https://archive.ph/tvKAB This is what he wrote before he became a dribbling little Leftist. “ When we can choose our children's' sex, modify our genomes to eliminate some forms of mental and physical disability, when we can modify our bodies and minds to improve them beyond the normal human baseline , when we can even use technology to make dolphins and great apes as smart as precocious children, what then? “ In other words, the increase in complexity is so great that there could be a Singularity - a point of total unpredictability, because the rate of change soars exponentially. Humanity could become extinct. We could be replaced by artificial intelligences, or cybernetic dolphins, or so alter our own genome that there is no cross breeding between the new rulers of the Earth and our own kind, and they view us as vermin. HE RECOGNISED THE PROBLEM HIMSELF. “ much of the opposition to transhumanism hasn't just come from the religious right, but from the left, too -- lefties who see transhumanism as likely to produce a troubling, divisive caste system, or to make us all beholden to corporate interests like Monsanto who bind us to subscribing to patented GM lifeforms that we require to sustain our lifestyles. “ The current Doctorow might be a braindead walking corpse, assuming he is still walking, but back then he knew that progress isn’t always in a positive direction, and that the rate of change was increasing to the point of insanity. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Future_Shock This is a book I read as a child. Future Shock is a 1970 book by American futurist Alvin Toffler,[1] written together with his spouse Adelaide Farrell,[2][3] in which the authors define the term "future shock" as a certain psychological state of individuals and entire societies. The shortest definition for the term in the book is a personal perception of "too much change in too short a period of time". The book, which became an international bestseller, has sold over 6 million copies and has been widely translated. The idea that this is some weird conservative worry is some deeply revisionist Leftist garbage. People of the Left and Right recognised FIFTY YEARS AGO that the rate of change was too great, and that it was only getting faster.
https://prepareforchange.net/2018/10/02/heres-how-chinas-social-credit-score-punish-and-reward-citizens-and-its-terrifying/ Lately, governments in the West have been copying the Social Credit Score system of the CCP. We have seen Paypal threaten to take money away from people if they so much as speak against the State. We have seen executives from Twitter exposed by Veritas as plotting to manipulate the American elections, by silencing anyone in favour of the Conservative Political Candidate. Everything in the State, nothing outside of it? I don’t think some changes are good, Mr Doctorow. I think some are fucking EVIL. And you know what? Every fascist and communist dictator made the same claim - they represented progress, and to oppose them was to be a hopeless reactionary.
Doctorow just imagines he will be the one firing the gun.

Twins Outright Six Players
The Twins have outrighted six players off their 40-man roster after they went unclaimed on waivers, as first noted on the transactions page at MLB.com. Right-handers Kyle Barraclough, Nick Vincent, Ian Gibaut and Luke Farrell were all removed from the roster, as were lefty Andrew Albers and infielder Drew Maggi. All of the players dropped from the roster today will be eligible to become free…

365 Day Movie Challenge (2019) - #8: Two of a Kind (1951) - dir. Henry Levin
I’m not sure if Two of a Kind was considered true film noir when it was released in 1951, but it’s a strange film that is handled in a manner far too silly for it to be taken seriously as the crime drama it wants to be. Michael “Lefty” Farrell (Edmond O’Brien) is a former GI with a history of gambling debts, recruited by sultry kind-of-femme-fatale Brandy Kirby (Lizabeth Scott) to help her squeeze a fortune out of an elderly millionaire and his wife. Brandy and her partner in crime, Vincent Mailer (Alexander Knox), have set up a scheme for Lefty to pose as the couple’s long-lost son, who went missing as a child, leaving Lefty to collect a hefty inheritance when his “parents” inevitably die. Perhaps under another director or other screenwriters, the plot might have seemed juicier as a noir exercise, but the mood is weirdly comedic most of the time and there is a distracting subplot regarding Lefty becoming romantically involved with the couple’s attractive yet annoyingly immature niece, Kathy McIntyre (Terry Moore), so it’s like the filmmakers never knew exactly how they wanted their story to come across.

7.2.17-Hector Santiago LHP (4-7) 5.37 ERA Vs. TBA
The Twins At A Glance- The Twins have had a good series and a bad series on this long road trip. They swept the Indians in Cleveland then lost three out of four in Boston. Now, we head to Kansas City for four games in 45 hours. The offense has been okay as they average 3.3 runs per game in the seven games. The pitching staff has been better with a total 2.25 ERA in 60 innings. The bullpen has been terrific owning a 1.82 ERA on this trip. Miguel Sano announced he will participate in the Home Run Derby on July 10th in Miami. He will play in the game either as a starter or a bench player. The All-Star rosters will be unveiled Sunday night. Joe Mauer has hit 5-for-12 in his last three games and has ten hits on this road trip. Miguel Sano is only 1-for-18 on this trip, Kennys Vargas is 1-for-13, and Max Kepler is 3-for-20. Taylor Rogers has thrown eleven straight scoreless frames out of the bullpen. Brandon Kintzler has 21 saves on the year, which is second in the American League. I’m not sure if he’ll be an All-Star because he doesn’t strike guys out, but he is deserving.
The Royals At A Glance- The Royals are playing better baseball in June. They are (16-9) in the month of June, but lost two out of three in Detroit this week. KC is back home for four before heading out west before the All-Star break. Since we last saw the Royals on May 21st, they took Al Albuquerque off the 40-man roster, Nate Karns and Danny Duffy are on the disabled list, and Paulo Orlando was placed on the 60-day DL with an undisclosed injury. There are some new faces in Ramon Torres, Neftali Feliz, and Kevin McCarthy. Torres has been great since his call-up. He is hitting .320 in nine games. Eric Hosmer leads the regulars with a .305 average. Mike Moustakas has 20 homers and could surpass Steve Balboni’s record of 36 home runs in a season for the Royals. Jason Vargas has been the ace of the Kansas City staff. The Twins will get their first look at him on Friday night. The back of the bullpen has been shaky. Kelvin Herrera has a 4.35 ERA and Joakim Soria owns a 3.66 ERA. Mike Minor and Scott Alexander have been good lefty options for Ned Yost.
What To Watch For- The Twins are (7-1) in the eight games with the Royals this season. This series is a big one as the four games will be played within 45 hours. Friday’s game features aces Ervin Santana and Jason Vargas. It’s the second time we’ve had a great pitching match-up, but we know how the Sale-Santana match-up went down. Felix Jorge will make his Major League debut on Saturday as the 26th man. Ervin Santana is (7-7) with a 3.51 ERA in 29 starts at Kauffman Stadium. Eric Hosmer has three homers off Santana and Alex Gordon has two. Jason Vargas is (6-4) with a 3.75 ERA in 17 games versus the Twins. Joe Mauer is hitting .389 off him in 36 at-bats. Hector Santiago is (3-3) with a 3.93 ERA in 17 games against the Royals. Alex Gordon and Salvador Perez each have two homers off him. Matt Strahm might get the nod on Sunday to start, but he has been awful against the Twins this year. He has given up seven runs in five innings versus Minnesota in 2017.

A Response to Nancy MacLean
I have honestly tried as hard as possible to maintain my equilibrium and good nature when engaging with Professor Nancy MacLean around the subject of her book, Democracy in Chains. And I sincerely attempted to have my say last year in a couple of pieces with Henry Farrell and leave it at that, but Professor MacLean insists on repeating outright falsehoods that could be avoided by a two minute Google search.
Prof. MacLean chose to slander me on Facebook, a medium that I have had the good sense to avoid. Here’s what she had to say:
Let’s start with the simply wrong and move on from there. First, Bill Niskanen was not president of Cato, but chairman of the board. That’s a pretty big difference. She can find the evidence right here on Wikipedia. If she had done any research on the Niskanen Center whatsoever, she would recognize that Bill Niskanen’s work has very little in common with the Center’s, beyond a willingness to call things as we see them. Second, when the book was published Brink Lindsey was no longer at VP at Cato, as he had moved to Niskanen. She would have found that here.
Third, the Niskanen Center does not describe itself as libertarian. For those who are interested, here’s Niskanen’s “About” page. It is certainly true that a lot of Niskanen’s staff came out of libertarian organizations, including Cato. And it’s right that Jerry Taylor’s original motivation for starting Niskanen had a lot to do with his rejection of climate science denial. But she might also find that Jerry was very involved on one side of the battle over control of Cato, with a certain bête noire of hers on the other side.
In any case it’s certainly not even remotely correct to say that that Niskanen “holds on to the libertarianism.” Has she even bothered to visit the Niskanen website before saying things like this? If she had, she’d have run into, for instance, Sam Hammond’s excellent work on the “free market welfare state,” which argues that in an era of market disruption the cause of social insurance is even more vital than ever. If that was too long she could have read Jared Bernstein’s interview with Sam, craftily hidden at the Washington Post.
Looking around elsewhere on the Niskanen site, Prof. MacLean might have read our Vice-President for Research Will Wilkinson’s attack on the Republican tax bill last year, which traces its flaws back to libertarian ideas. It was deep in the dark web…no, it was in the New York Times, which is easily available in Durham. She might also be interested in Will’s argument with a prominent George Mason University libertarian, Ilya Somin, on what he sees as libertarianism’s fundamental conflict with democracy. The piece, by the way, says that Professor MacLean is right on the question of libertarian hostility to democracy, but that, among other things, she is “overly fond of Infowars-style dot-connecting.”
If Professor MacLean was under the impression that Niskanen is just a libertarian mouthpiece, she could have also picked up my book with Niskanen VP for Policy Brink Lindsey, The Captured Economy. There are two copies in Duke’s library, for her reading pleasure. There she would have found us arguing for reversing Republicans’ cynical cuts in Congressional analytical capacity, which we argue simply empower lobbyists for concentrated interests. She might have also looked on the New York Times website, where she would have found Brink and I criticizing the Trump administration’s record on regulation as simply advancing upward redistribution and rent seeking. Neither of these are the standard argument around the halls of Reason or Cato.
Why does Professor MacLean make such basic errors and misstatements of motivation? The answer, I fear, is that she cannot imagine any criticism of her work that is not motivated by partisanship and financial conflict of interest. But the truth is that there are now significant scholars who are not on the right who read her book and had much the same reaction that Henry and I had. Those range from the sociologist Elizabeth Popp Berman at Albany (who describes the book as “hyperbolic, overly speculative, and sometimes uses sources in misleading ways”) to the Stanford University historian Jennifer Burns (“Democracy in Chains is characterized by a fundamental lack of curiosity. The book is disconnected from not just economics or political theory, but from all the social sciences…it bears witness to an alarming parochialism.”) And that’s just as a taste.
It’s also worth noting that the co-author of my critical essays, Henry Farrell, is a full-throated Irish-born social democrat and ringleader of the wonderful but quite lefty blog Crooked Timber. And given that she quotes me extensively in her book, Prof. MacLean clearly thinks my scholarship is valuable and not just financially conflicted ideological claptrap.
Prof. MacLean cannot, despite all the evidence to the contrary, imagine this as anything but a political dispute, when it is at its core a scholarly disagreement. At the end of her post she says that this whole conflict is a waste of time because “people could be our (sic) registering voters and canvassing to stop the cause the two [myself and Geoff Kabaservice] are at pains to defend.” I will let Geoff account for his own partisan leanings.
But Prof.MacLean seems to have a very mistaken impression of where I’m coming from where electoral politics is concerned. That’s because she is now reading backwards from scholarly criticism to partisan motivations, and in doing so simply embarrassing herself. But where the general elections of 2018 are concerned, there is no daylight between myself and Prof. MacLean. Neither was there in the general election of 2016. Or 2012. Or 2008. Or…well, any general election since I first voted for president back in 1988.
My scholarly impression of Prof. MacLean’s work, however, has nothing to do with any of this. It’s just that, wearing my scholar’s hat, I came to the same impression as Professors Berman, Farrell and Burns—that Prof. MacLean had written a very poor piece of scholarship, regardless of my agreement with some of her positions. She can disagree with that, but she should do so as a scholar, responding to the specific criticisms that have been made of her book. My original pieces with Henry Farrell are here and here. I would hope that she would finally address them substantively, along with the other work cited above, and cease hurtling slander at her critics as a way of avoiding responsibility for the scholarly merits of her work.
