Butterfly Bar aka Skyline Bar

The Skyline Bar, previously known as the Butterfly, was a bar in the Hillbrow neighbourhood of Johannesburg, South Africa.  Opened in the 1970s, it was a whites only establishment until the second half of the 1980s saw the “greying” of the neighbourhood as more black people moved in.

The following quote is from a memoir of growing up gay in South Africa and describes the Butterfly during the late 1980s.

“The Butterfly Bar had the feeling of a small town community gathering point, with all sorts clustered along the long counter. Toen het Centraal Museum in Utrecht in 2020 een tentoonstelling wijdde aan de Utrechtse surrealist Joop Moesman, werd daar ook veel aandacht besteed aan vrouwelijke surrealisten. Ook op de tentoonstelling Surrealism beyond borders in 2022 in het Tate Modern in Londen kwamen de vrouwelijke kunstenaars in het surrealisme nadrukkelijk aan de orde. Nu wijdt het Musée de Montmartre een tentoonstelling specifiek aan vrouwelijke surrealisten. Bij binnenkomst is er een muur met namen. Een aantal daarvan zijn bekend: Lee Miller, Dora Maar, Maret Oppenheim, Leonora Carrington, Leonor Fini, Dorothea Tanning en Claude Cahun. Maar er staan ook een hoop namen op de muur die me niets zeggen.

Eén zo’n onbekende naam is Jane Graverol. Twee integrerende kleine werkjes tonen een mond achter een raster. De schilderijtjes bieden volop stof tot interpretatie. Dat daarbij de rol van de vrouw en van de vrouwelijke kunstenaar ter discussie staat, lijkt voor de hand te liggen. Graverol is een Belgische kunstenares die door René Magritte werd aangemoedigd haar werk tentoon te stellen.

La première Leçon is ook een schilderij waar de plaats van de vrouw ter discussie lijkt te staan. Een meisje in een popperig blauw jurkje met kant staat met haar rug naar ons toe. Haar handen op haar rug geketend.

Ook van Manon Adams had ik nog nooit gehoord. Haar Medusa Grown Old is een interessant werk. Het kwam tot stand na een ongelukje in de studio van de kunstenaar, waarbij een Afrikaans beeldje omviel en terechtkwam op een tekening van een eikenboom. Dit samengaan van twee beelden zette Adams ertoe aan om deze zwarte Medusa te creëren. De slangen uit haar hoofd zijn vervangen door dode takken.

Van Ithell Colquhoun, geboren in India maar opgegroeid in het Verenigd koninkrijk, hangen op de tentoonstelling enkele grote werken. Opvallend is La Cathédrale engloutic. Colquhoun distantieerde zich al snel van de Engelse surrealisten, maar onderhield wel contact met de Franse surrealist André Breton. Ze hadden een gemeenschappelijke interesse in occulte en esoterische zaken. Wellicht heeft de (overigens ten onrechte) lang veronderstelde link van de druïden met Stonehenge te maken met dit schilderij. De grote opgerichte stenen doen beslist aan het Engelse monument Stonehenge denken. De stenen samen vormen een lemniscaat, teken van oneindigheid. Het eiland roept associaties op met het vrouwelijk lichaam. Is het een borst?

Op de tentoonstelling in het Centraal Museum in Utrecht, die ik in het begin van dit stukje noemde, werd aangekaart dat het surrealisme soms SM-achtige trekken vertoonde. Dat komt hier in Montmartre tot uiting in een werk van Mimi Parent: Maîtresse.  Een zweepje heeft, in plaats van leren riempjes, twee haarvlechten. Beide betekenissen van maîtresse (meesteres en minnares) worden zo in één beeld samengebracht.

Tot slot nog aandacht voor een naam die me wél bekend was voor deze tentoonstelling. Ik kwam haar al meerdere keren tegen op tentoonstellingen. Voor zover ik het woord ‘haar’ hier mag gebruiken, want ze speelde nogal met genderidentiteiten, waardoor haar werk nu zeer actueel is. Haar (aangenomen mannelijke) naam: Claude Cahun. Een fascinerend werk is Le père. We zien een collage van voorwerpen op het strand die samen een menselijke figuur vormen. Op de plaats van het hart is iets (elektriciteitsdraad?) in het ‘lichaam’ geboord, als was het een mes. Als we de titel in aanmerking nemen, lijken we te kijken naar een symbolische moord op haar vader.

PERSIR'is 'n naam wat vir die meeste van ons aan die wêreld van die storieboeke laat dink. Die heel Ooste met sy prag en praal kom sommer so voor 'n mens op as jy die naam hoor. Die stede van Persie-Tebris, 8jiras, Isfahan klink of hulle in 'n droomwereld hoort, ver buite die gewone lewe waar julle en ek werk en speel. As 'n mens 'n boek oopmaak en lees van die kaliefs van Bagdad en hoe hulle in aanraking gekom het met die ou Persie van die Middeleeue. voer dit jou reg in die stories van die Duisend-en- een Nag.

Die kuns van Persië behels ál die mooi en dinge wat ons met sy naam verbind. Dit bring ons in 'n land waar geluk en skoonheid heers. Die Pers se sin vir skoonheid word uitgedruk in die sterlikheid en die pragtige patrone wat ons oral in Persiese kuns aantref. Dit is soos 'n juweel wat skitter en blink, en jou nooit sal verveel nie.

Persiese kunstenaar is 'n meester van her- haling. Hy sê dieselfde ding oor en oor, maar elke keer net 'n bietjie anders, elke keer met 'n effense wysiging: hy word nooit moeg van versier nie. Van alles wat hard en wreed en treurig in die lewe is, vergeet hy en hy dink net hoe mooi en fyn dit kan wees. Sy kuns skakel baie uit en meesterlik 'n paar temas met 'n wonderlike verskeidenheid.

'N BAIE OU BESKAWING.

Persiese kuns begin ver in die oertyd. Voorbeelde van voorhistoriese erdewerk en verwante kunste is gevind by opgrawings van plekke wat behoort het tot 'n beskawing wat so oud is dat dit minstens vyf eeue voor ou Egiptenare moes bestaan het. Sesduisend jaar gelede het die mense van Persië al fyn stowwe geweef en noukeurig afgewerkte ornamente van goud en pragtig versierde erdewerk gemaak. Hieruit kan ons aflei dat hulle in 'n georganiseerde en beskaafde gemeenskap moes gelewe het. Die res van die wêreld was daardie dae nog lank nie sover ontwikkel nie. Dit is. daarom dat geskiedskrywers vandag reken dat Persië die land is waar die beskawing, soos ons dit vandag ken, moes begin het.

'N GEBED OM VRUGBAARHEID.

Die erdepot wat julle hier sien, het 'n pottebakker omtrent 5.500 jaar gelede gemaak. 'n Mens kan dit byna nie glo nie, al probeer jy ook so ver terugdink as wat jy kan.

Die eerste ontwerpe wat die Perse gebruik het, het hulle aan hul godsdiens ontleen. Gewoonlik was dit 'n gebed om vrugbaarheid.

Kyk nou na die ontwerp op hierdie drinkbeker. Die groot boe daarop stel berge voor, en in die hoekies is daar 'n voorstelling van poeletjies water waarin daar vier riete groei. Die berge stel die lug voor wat vir die Perse God was, die poeletjies beteken water. en vrugbaarheid en groeikrag word deur die papkuil voorgestel. Die hele ontwerp is 'n smeekbede dat die opperwese reën uit die lug moet stuur. sodat die oeste groot kan wees. Die Perse was boere en reent was natuurlik vir hulle baie belangrik.

Dit is die manier waarop kuns gewoonlik by 'n volk begin. Eers is daar 'n voorwerp wat gemaak, word vir die gebruik, soos die beker om uit te drink. Dan voel hulle lus om die kaal oppervlaktes van die voorwerp te versier, maar terselfdertyd wil die kunstenaar deur middel van die versiering sy behoeftes bekend maak aan die vreemde, onbekende mag, wat ons die natuur noem.
