Benjamin Troubles Movie Review

Benjamin Troubles is a dark comedy that brings to mind a sequel to Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants as made by the Coen Bros. It’s the twisted tale of Ben Ramsay (Manu Intiraymi), a likable loser who is feeling nearly faded as Bobby McGee’s jeans... in fact, when we meet him, he’s about to give up on the whole shebang called life. 

In his final moments of desperation, a homeless sage gives Ben some advice, and a pair of enchanted dungarees... These special jeans produce a one hundred dollar bill every hour on the hour, 24/7. Sounds great, and it’s just the salvation Ben needs. Cash-flow problems? Not anymore! But you know what they say: the love of money is the root of all evil. Also, the ATM with pockets only gives up its bounty if the wearer never, ever takes off the pants. That not only wreaks havoc with one’s love life, but the entire affair takes Ben down a winding road of back room poker games, drug dealer dens, and oh, so much worse - all wrapping up in a hilarious twist end you don’t see coming. 

Snappy, acerbic script by Lee Ross (Downloading Nancy) is augmented by first time director Kai Ephron’s pathos for his characters and situations. The cast are all good, but it’s Intiraymi who keeps us wanting to watch their trials and triumphs as their situations grow ever more absurd.

Look for the movie streaming on iTunes, and rolling out over other streaming platforms in the weeks to come.
