48: Lee Oskar // Before the Rain
Before the Rain Lee Oskar 1978, Elektra
I imagine this is pretty much what inattentive buyers thought they were getting when they purchased Throbbing Gristle’s 20 Jazz Funk Greats. I picked this album up for a few bucks today because it contains “Haunted House,” a staple of my Halloween playlists, and while I really should’ve just saved up for a sandwich instead, it has a few moments.
Lee Oskar was the Danish-born harmonica player in WAR and someone I thought, until this moment, was a light-skinned Black man based on Before the Rain’s powerfully Afroed cover illustration. This is very smooth stuff indeed: languid, mostly five-minute-plus, string-sweetened soft R&B jams that lay out plenty of space for Oskar to honk on his bobo to his heart’s content. His harmonica style reminds me of Stevie Wonder’s, and while Oskar’s playing is very deft, there’s just so much of it I started to cringe at the sound of the instrument by the time I reached the end of my first playthrough.
youtube
Right though, those good moments. “Haunted House” remains something like the “Thriller” of elevator music, seven gliding minutes of lapidary Hammond organ and purely funky drumming. It’s far and away the best thing here, but there’s a bit of competition from side one closer “San Francisco Bay.” “Bay” combines a kinda pizzicato guitar and strings part that sounds a bit like the “Forgot About Dre” keyboard riff set to a disco rhythm with a maddeningly catchy harmonica hook. It all builds to a pretty stirring climax that I would like a lot better if the harmonica melody hadn’t been interpolated for the chorus of Pitbull and Kesha’s deathless brain parasite “Timber.” I like Kesha and have nothing against Mr. Worldwide, but that song hits me with the physical sense-memory of an Ottawa basement karaoke night circa 2014, and I need to be more emotionally prepared for that than I was when the needle hit “San Francisco Bay” earlier. With that said, the taste washes away a little more with each replay, so maybe there is a little room yet in my heart for Oskar and his bullet-belt of mouth-harps.

Voyage of the Damned (1976)

Warnings: non/dubcon, and other dark elements. My username actually says you never asked for any of this.
My warnings are not exhaustive but be aware this is a dark fic and may include potentially triggering topics. Please use your common sense when consuming content. I am not responsible for your decisions.
Characters: Lee Bodecker
Summary: The newly-single sheriff sets his eye on an unexpected match.
Part of the Backwoods AU
As usual, I would appreciate any and all feedback. I’m happy to once more go on this adventure with all of you! Thank you in advance for your comments and for reblogging.
"You're so boring. Vanilla," Greta teases as you push through the grocery store door to the sidewalk.
"Simple but tasty," you roll your eyes, "as if Rocky Road is so exciting."
"Whatever," she follows you to the picnic table just outside the store.
You sit as she swipes her tongue around the heaping scoops and you take tiny licks of your own. You pull the napkin closer to the top to catch the melting drip. She presses her lips to the ice cream before popping them off and licking them clean. You frown at her but she's looking past you.
You crane to look over your shoulder. Sheriff Bodecker stands by his cruiser, sunglasses on as he stares in your direction. He wears a crooked grin as he leans his weight on one heel, emphasizing the pudge around his middle.
You turn back to hide your disgust.
"He's a bit old for you," you chide.
"Old and rich. Single now, too," she continues to fellate the cone as you try not to hurl up vanilla.
"Charming," you muse.
"Loosen up," she hisses, "not all of us are pure little virgins.
"Shut up," you exclaim, "am not."
She arches a brow in challenge and you try to shrug her off. Your cheeks burn and you try to cool off with another lick of the cone. She's your best friend but she can sure be cruel.
A shadow approaches and blocks out the sun. You glance over from the corner of your eye and see the silhouette of the Sheriff's broad hat brim. Greta tugs on a strand of her hair and leans forward so her tank top slumps down her chest.
"How are you doing, sheriff?" She purrs.
"Fine day out," he drawls, "I'm doing just good. You girls enjoying the sunshine. Stayin' outta trouble."
"Trouble? I wouldn't know anything about that now," she flirts with a wink. You smother your sarcasm with the dessert.
"Oh, you don't?" He puts a hand on the table and leans, "I didn't see you down at The Horn last Saturday?"
"Did you? You didn't say hi," she intones.
"Suppose I was feelin' shy," he chuckles.
"Gret, come on," you shift the cone as you try to sop up the melting ice cream, "let's find some shade."
"You can go," she dismisses with a flick of her fingers.
You huff and look between her and the sheriff. He glances down at you and grins.
"Sorry, sweetie, I'm not meaning to shoulder ya out," he turns and stands straight, crossing his arms over his stomach, "you know, I'm not a selfish man. I can handle both of ya."
The airs knocked out of you at his suggestion. You're not a prude by any means. Maybe not experienced but you're open-minded. He just isn't your type and you shouldn't be his.
"Um," you swallow and stand, "I... I'm going to grab more napkins."
He scoffs as you step over the bench and you quickly skirt away. If he didn't have a badge, you would tell him where to go. You're so tired of Greta doing this. It's exactly why you don't go to the bar with her.
You go inside and stride back up to the ice cream bar. You grab napkins and send Oskar a smile over the top. He chuckles at the mess trickling down your hand.
You decide to wander the aisles and give Greta a chance to sow her endless wild oats. Ugh. The sheriff? Really? Word is he left the new librarian for a waitress his deputy was dating. Then they didn't last more than a week.
It's gross how the old women gossip and say the librarian didn't do enough for him, that she never gave him a child. The man needs a legacy and you can't blame him for finding someone who can deliver it. Ew. This place is so backwards.
You finish the cone and go into the bathroom to rinse off the stickiness on your fingers. You head back out, hoping it's enough time for the sheriff to get a call. As you emerge, you see Greta walking with him to his cruiser.
"Really? You're just going to ditch me?" You snip as you approach.
"Now, darlin', you're welcome to join us," The sheriff turns with a wink.
"Um, no thanks," you say curtly and the corner of his lips twitches, "I'm good. Greta--"
"I don't feel like sitting around doing nothing," she snorts, "if you don't wanna have fun, go home."
You scowl and look away. It's not the first time, it won't be the last.
"Fine," you jut out your chin at her, "have fun."
"Don't be jealous?"
"Trust me, I'm not," you snarl, "next time you call, I won't answer."
"You will," she snickers, "I'm your only fucking friend."
You wave her off and twist on your heel. As you do, you notice the sheriff watching you. You quickly avert your eyes and stomp away.
You can't help but quake with anger. As shitty as Greta can be, she's right. She is your only friend. You hate this town.

(Some of) The Greatest Performances I Have Ever Seen
Since @thealmightyemprex tagged me in that "share a piece of acting that blew you away" post and it got me thinking about the best performances I have ever seen. I've now compiled this list and I wanted to share it. @ariel-seagull-wings @themousefromfantasyland @piterelizabethdevries @courtneysmovieblog @vulpinesaint
Linda Manz in Out of the Blue
An open wound of a performance that, even after a second viewing, is difficult to discuss because it is so raw in its portrayal of the effects of trauma and its devastating, empathetic hopelessness.
Isabelle Adjani in Possession
Adjani is hypnotic here. You will not be able to rip your eyes away. Every moment she is onscreen, she locks you in place and you cannot help but watch in awe.
Sheryl Lee in Fire Walk with Me
If Roger Ebert were still alive, I would hunt him down for his dismissal of this film. If the original series is all about the audience realizing that Leland is actually BOB, this film is all about Laura realizing that BOB has always been Leland. Sheryl Lee is phenomenal.
Rebecca Smart in Celia
Possibly the greatest performance from a child actor I have ever seen, and emotionally devastating. One of the few films to truly understand childhood and the trauma of existing as a child in a world that treats you as less than.
If any film gets childhood, this one does. Please, please see this film.
Emily Watson in Breaking the Waves
Lars von Trier can go fuck himself, but I still connect deeply to Watson's performance here. Nakedly vulnerable, sensitive, and heartbreaking. And a better Passion of the Christ than Mel Gibson's fucking Passion of the Christ movie.
Maria Falconetti in The Passion of Joan of Arc
Speaking of better Passion narratives in film, Falconetti's face is etched into my soul, detailed in extreme close-up that captures every glint of tears in her eyes.
Ewa Froling in Fanny and Alexander
Emilie screaming in the night over Oskar's bier has haunted me for years, and yet it is only one moment in this richly multifaceted performance. Her composure and presentment over Christmas. The confusion, shock, and horror when Oskar first collapses. The intensity of sober grief as he is dying, followed by those screams that hollow out your soul. The relatability of looking for something stable after deep grief and thinking you've found it, only to realize you have been manipulated and fighting back. The cold, ruthless defiance of a woman breaking free of abuse. The... all of it.
Emilie is done dirty in the theatrical cut. If you can see the Television Version, I implore you to watch it.
Gunn Wållgren in Fanny and Alexander
Liza, you may say, are you just going to list off every performance in Fanny and Alexander? I may not go that far, but the next few on this list will all be performances from that film. It is my favorite, after all, and I reserve the right to gush about it.
I love Ingrid Bergman, but I'm glad that Wållgren got the role. She brings an aching warmth to the role of a matriarch passing from mask to mask as she holds her family together.
Bertil Guve in Fanny and Alexander
Alexander will be haunted by phantoms long after he has grown. Another incredible performance from a child actor that I have connected with for many years now.
Jan Malmsjö in Fanny and Alexander
I love Max Von Sydow (the role of the bishop was originally written with him in mind) but he could not do what Malmsjö does here. There's an almost genial charm to him that Sydow could pull off, I guess, but it would be different... less disarming, less chilling. The kindness that does not extend to his eyes, that betrays the affectation of kindness as just that - affectation. The way his hand, extended to caress Fanny's cheek, curls into a fist when she turns from him. With just a hand gesture, without a glance at his face, we know so much.
Irene Papas in Iphigenia
Greatest final shot of all time. I'm pretty sure Agamemnon knows he's a dead man in this retelling even as he's setting foot on the ship.
Laura Dern in Inland Empire
I Do Not Know what I witnessed but I Do Know I would watch Laura Dern acting in this for another three hours, and that is a testament to an arresting performance.

Fionna and Cake x SVTFOE AU
This idea has been floating around my head for a while, and eventually I decided to draw it! As of now this AU (If you can even call it that lol) is on a unspecified hiatus. but I may revisit it sometime soon. Anyways here's all of the characters I made for it!
Starting us off we have Star the Human! Similar to Fionna, she's rocking that classic blonde hair, but let's hers hang out rather than bunching it all up. She's never afraid of a adventure, and with Marco by her side, they can conquer anything
Marco the Cat! Best friend and older brother figure to Star, he's always there to support his friends and act as a voice of reason when things get out of hand
Prince Thomas Trident rules the Candy Kingdom with compassion and empathy but lets his temper get out of hand at times. He has some unusual features, "Demonic" as Janna puts it, with pointy ears, sharp teeth, and a extra eye, there may be more than the candy prince is letting on
Janna Lee the Vampire Queen! Owner of Star and Marco's tree house, she lets herself in whenever she pleases, takes what she wants, and messes with Marco as much as possible! Janna also enjoys pulling pranks on the candy people, and especially their prince
Lady Jackie-Lynn the Oceachromicorn! Right hoof to Prince Tom, Jackie's always there to calm her friends down, especially her Boyfriend Marco.
Hunter Wizard AKA Oskar is the laidback Wildman of the woods. He spends most of his days trying (and failing) to make music, and fending off the various threats that comes with living in a forest
Lumpy Space Pony! Does anyone actually enjoy her company? No one really besides Star & which causes her to be a little clingy to her since she's her only friend. Yes, she's selfish, yes she's entitled, but she means well in her own way and will always try to help
Finally, we have the Ice Queen, formerly known as Eclipsa Petrikov. She tries to maintain a professional appearance, but it's hard when a wand is making you lose your mind. She hangs out in the Ice Kingdom most of the time, and occasionally tries to kidnap a prince or two. Deep down though, she's just a troubled soul and I think she can sense somethings wrong too
And.. that's everyone! So far at least. Like I said this AU is on a hiatus for who knows how long, but I do plan on coming back to it sometime soon! I also plan on making more dynamic/expressive poses for the character images in the future, but that'll most likely take a while. With all that said, Thank you to anyone who stayed until the end, it means the world to me!
Here's the "finale" photo!

Throwback Project: Microflora Chroma (2021)
Descriptions (edited):
"Microflora Chroma (2021) represents two of my passions, often thought of in very separate terms: art and the biological sciences, particularly botany. I wanted to create an intersection where Art meets Science, the circular presentation hinting at microscopy. I layered focal points of interest to contrast with my chosen backgrounds, creating abstracted still lives. I then used a paintbrush to apply glycerine, food dyes, oil and gold leaf, using photography to capture the results. This series blurs the lines between the contemporary (digital photography) and the traditional (19th century botanical illustrations)."
"Influencing artists: Ansel Adams, Deborah Cameron, Leila Jefferys, Lindy Lee, Margriet Smulders, Martin Klimas, Lasma Vitolina, Mary Butler, Jan Davidsz. de Heem, Kimiko Yoshida, Philjames, Janet Tavener, Raku Inoue, Chiharu Shiota, Oskar Fischinger"
