The Foreigner
JingRen AU ft. Sampo
Tumblr media
A/N: Posting this here after all cuz why not. A fic I wrote for a friend a while ago. I got the request for lee Sampo and lers Jing Yuan and Blade, we brainstormed a little and this was the result. Please note I'm currently still catching up on 2.1 so be careful with talking to me about any Honkai lore/spoilers 😅
Summary: Jing Yuan and Blade confront a mysterious foreigner called Sampo Koski who tried to sneak into the Xianzhou Luofu. Things get quite interesting, for all three of them. (Also on AO3)
Word Count: 2.2K
Tumblr media
He was late. Jing Yuan glanced at the door. Usually around this time of the day, Blade would make his entrance. A moment he found himself looking forward to more than he would like to admit. Blade visiting his office like a regular visitor was something he couldn’t have dreamed of for many many years.
Ever since Blade had come to accept and realize that Dan Feng was truly gone, his waves of mara-caused madness started to reduce significantly. With time, Jing Yuan was delighted to finally see some traces of his trusted old friend, who despite their differences appeared motivated to exchange his Stellaron Hunter missions for regular visits, reporting to Jing Yuan about occurrences in the world, the good and bad.
As they grew closer through these frequent visits, the feelings of familiarity may have gotten Jing Yuan a little too confident in reconciling with Blade, suggesting him to leave behind the Stellaron Hunters indefinitely and aid him with his duties at the Xianzhou Luofu instead.
Surely he did not expect Blade would agree. Well, Kafka’s support may have played a vital role. Even if Blade would have said ‘no’, she seemed to insist he should stay behind and find a new role to fulfill, fully supporting the ‘happiness of Bladie’.
Jing Yuan smiled. He felt comfortable, spending time with Blade who he shared a past with that connected them like no one else at the Xianzhou Luofu. Jing Yuan was just closing his eyes to reminisce about the past some more, when finally the door opened and Blade arrived.
“Welcome back, Captain. You are quite late,” Jing Yuan said fondly. He nowadays called Blade captain, even though he was never officially assigned to such a position, he often assisted him so much he might as well be one.
“Jing Yuan. There’s an infiltrant,” was Blade’s short answer. Jing Yuan chuckled. Blade was not the small-talk kind of person.
“An infiltrant hm? Fine. Send him in.”
He loved to see how Blade was literally treated as a captain when he merely had to call out “Guards!” and they came in to bring in their… guest.
“We brought the infiltrant,” they reported, shoving the man forward. Blade caught the stranger by the arm.
“Infiltrant? Now now now!” the man responded in a theatrical manner, pulling himself free before spreading his arms and making a full 360 degree twirl. Blade simply caught him again, shaking his head.
“Hello General,” Yanqing said, joining Blade, the foreigner and two guards in Jing Yuan’s office.
“This man was caught making his way into the Xianzhou ships. We do not know how he boarded, nor what his intentions are. When we demanded him to tell us his identity, he said-”
“-that I am Sampo Koski, a businessman, chaperon, and problem-solving conversationalist, visiting all the way from Belobog to help boost your economy.”
“....That,” Yanqing said. Jing Yuan stared at all of them, then at Sampo, and at Blade. He chuckled.
“Interesting,” he hummed. “Yanqing, please get in touch with our friends from the Astral Express. If this foreigner claims to visit from Jarilo-VI, they might be familiar with him. In the meantime, I will question him here. Blade, if you could assist…”
Blade nodded and dragged Sampo towards him while Yanqing and the guards left the room. As soon as the door closed, it was silent.
“So. Sampo Koski,” Jing Yuan said slowly, walking closer to study the man’s remarkable appearance.
“For what reason, may I ask, would you visit the Xianzhou Luofu? Unannounced, uninvited. Startling my men,” Jing Yuan wondered.
“Business! Business of course. I come in peace, General.”
Jing Yuan exchanged glances with Sampo. “Did they search him?” he asked. Blade did not answer but while not letting go of Sampo’s arm, instantly began to feel around his pockets.
“Hehehey! Woohaha, cahahareful!” Sampo laughed, dancing and wiggling under the sudden touch. Jing Yuan noted the funny laugh, and Blade reacted with a low grunt.
“Quit your squirming,” he huffed, continuing to search him.
“Let me help. Hold him still,” Jing Yuan said. To think Blade had ever been his prisoner before. Back then he would not have appreciated Jing Yuan telling him commands like this. How times had changed. Right now they worked together, and he smiled when Blade held both Sampo’s arms tightly so Jing Yuan could search his pockets. It made him laugh a lot.
“Hehehello! Sohoho inahahapropriate!” he cackled. Jing Yuan glanced at him. Was he that sensitive? Honestly.
“Credits, a lot of them. Not the usual amount you expect one should carry. Where did you get them?” Jing Yuan asked, putting his findings aside.
“Theft! Hey! I earned those, fair and square. Like I said, I’m an innocent fella coming over to do business! Hehehey stohohop!” Sampo yelled when Jing Yuan patted higher to find if anything else was hidden under his clothes.
“What is his problem ?” Blade asked. He sounded so frustrated it made Jing Yuan smile. How amusing.
“Never met a ticklish person before, Blade?” he asked. To demonstrate he pinched Sampo’s lower side, eliciting a loud yelp from the man.
“That’s nohohot okay !” he protested. The pinch was effective though, since Jing Yuan felt something right at that spot.
“Blade… Hold him tight.”
He probably didn’t need to tell him that, and Jing Yuan calmly tugged at Sampo’s clothing, fingers digging underneath it to grasp the thing he felt just now. Not without the unnecessary noise though.
“Hehehey! Wahahatch it! Hahaharrassmehehent!” he laughed. It was a crumbled piece of paper. Jing Yuan unfolded it and turned it for Blade and Sampo to see.
“A wanted poster? Yours?” he asked, confused. He looked at it again and frowned to see someone’s signature on it. It was very curly and gracious, but not informative.
“So, you claim to be from… Belobog. Should we rephrase that into: a wanted criminal from Belobog?” he asked, holding up the poster again. Sampo gasped.
“Me, a criminal? Nooo. That signature, you see. It’s from Gepard Landau himself!”
Jing Yuan and Blade exchanged glances.
“Who?”
Sampo nodded triumphantly. “Geppie. Captain of Silvermane Guards, very skilled, very handsome. He signed that for me. It’s just a token of our relationship.”
“...Why would he sign this?” Jing Yuan couldn’t help but think this man was wasting his time, but at the same time, he was wasting both his and Blade’s time, which made this situation only more amusing and entertaining.
“It’s a long story. But you see Gepard likes me. So, I can only suggest you release me. Let’s not jeopardize the diplomatic relationship between Belobog and the Xianzhou Luofu now shall we?”
“I have no idea what diplomatic relationship he is speaking of. Do you want me toー?” Blade already made a motion to get violent with the poor rambling man, but at that moment Yanqing came in.
“I received word from the Astral Express. Sampo Koski is indeed confirmed to be a mercenary from the Underworld of Belobog,” Yanqing reported.
Sampo raised his eyebrows. “You see?” he asked.
“They also say he can’t be trusted.”
Sampo’s jaw dropped. “Wait - t-that’s all they’re saying? Let them demand my release! March 7th and Stelle are my best, best friends!” he rambled. Jing Yuan almost wanted to laugh at the fact that Dan Heng wasn’t mentioned in this context.
“No one is demanding anyone’s release. Thank you, Yanqing. We will deal with him accordingly,” Jing Yuan thanked him, and Yanqing nodded and left them alone again.
“So, business man from Belobog. Whether you are wanted by Jarilo-VI’s Silvermane Guards or not, one question remains unclear. Why are you here , and how did you slip past the guards on our ship?”
“I know of ways to make him talk if y-” Blade was cut off by Sampo’s renewed bouts of laughter; Jing Yuan casually tapped his fingers against his lower side, impressed by how much it tickled him.
“I do too, Blade. Trust me,” he said, improvising. If his relation to Belobog was still unclear, he was not going to bring harm to him. However, if this man already proved to be this ticklish from a mere pat-down, then he was more than happy to see how much this certain sensitivity could help them further.
“What are you doing?” Blade hissed, barely hearable through Sampo’s laughter.
“Persuading our guest, Blade. If he’s a friend of this Captain Gepard Landau, it is not my intent to hurt him. However, some persuasion to give us more information will do the trick.”
Jing Yuan clawed very lightly at Sampo’s lower sides, and the man jerked in Blade’s hold.
“Hehehehey nohohot thahahat!” he shrieked. Oh, this was way too easy.
“Persuasion? You are playing around,” Blade responded, but Sampo’s arms were still trapped in his grip and he wasn’t letting go.
Blade’s confusion and frustration only encouraged Jing Yuan more to keep up this silly game with their foreign guest.
“Join me, Blade,” Jing Yuan said, smiling gently at Blade who looked like he was having the worst day ever.
“You have to be kidding me,” he replied angrily. With Sampo Koski’s hysterical laughter in the background, it only sounded funnier.
“I am not,” Jing Yuan said. Blade rolled his eyes.
“You are insufferable,” he said, but still he did let go of Sampo so he could claw viciously all over his ribs, almost looking like he was going to tear the man apart, but the tickling did seem to be working since Sampo flailed his freed arms wildly and screeched.
“WHAHahat ihihis this ahahah! This plahahace is sohoho weheheird!” he laughed. Jing Yuan didn’t care that he was giving the impression that this was the normal way of doing interrogations at the Xianzhou Luofu. He was having fun with Blade here, and he was convincing the mysterious foreigner to speak the truth. Two flies, one stone.
“See? It’s easy,” Jing Yuan said when Blade effortlessly moved his fingers against Sampo’s torso, making him laugh and wheeze as he struggled in between them.
“It’s ridiculous,” Blade argued. And yet, he was cooperating. Jing Yuan smiled. He had switched his tactics to poking Sampo’s tummy relentlessly, and he went back to interrogating him.
“Mr. Koski, if you wish to make the torture stop, I encourage you to confess everything we want to know. Who are you really, why and how are you here. It’s that simple.”
“AHahahah! I cahahan’t tahahalk like thihiihis!”
“You are talking now, so I’m sure you’ll-” mid-tickle, Jing Yuan’s hands accidentally touched Blade’s, and for some reason that made him stop talking. Blade immediately pulled his hands back and moved them up all of a sudden, digging his fingers under Sampo’s arms and tickling his armpits viciously.
“You know what you are doing,” Jing Yuan complimented while Sampo’s voice did quite something else.
“AAAHAHahah hahahang on! Ahahaalright - I’ll speheheheak! Nonono not thehehere!”
“Stop talking,” Blade said. Was he… flustered? Maybe a little. Jing Yuan chuckled.
“I can’t help it. It makes me happy that perhaps you may remember we used to do this, back in the High-Cloud Quintet days.”
“Nonsense,” Blade said, but he wasn’t reacting too harshly.
“Do you remember?” Jing Yuan urged.
“I do not.”
Jing Yuan smiled fondly. If he was the only one remembering that in a distant past they would get silly and tickle each other - well mostly he would tickle Yingxing and piss him off - then maybe one day he should help Blade remember.
“I sahahaid I’ll speheheak! Nohohoo !” Jing Yuan only noticed now he had been drilling his fingers into Sampo’s torso while keeping his eyes locked with Blade’s.
Blade also blinked and dug his fingers under Sampo’s arms some more, making him howl.
“Whhaahaht is happeniihihiing aaahahaha!” Sampo cried helplessly, unable to shake both of them off. Jing Yuan figured they had gotten a little lost in their own world, and he snapped out of it.
“Right. That should do it.” Blade understood him well and also stopped the tickling. Sampo sank on his knees and gasped for air.
“I can handle it from here. Will I see you at dinner, later?” Jing Yuan asked. Blade looked at him, his expression somehow different than before the strange shared tickle interrogation thing, and he nodded.
“Yes. Later.” He walked away and left the room. Only Sampo was still left, on his hands and knees, shivering as he recovered from his laughing fit.
“Mr. Koski, shall we try again? I ask you a question, and you give me your honest answer.”
“Or else… You’ll tickle me huh?” Sampo said breathlessly. Jing Yuan chuckled.
“I might.”
“A-alright then,” Sampo said, and as he started to talk in a less arrogant and theatrical, more serious manner, Jing Yuan listened, but at the same time drifted off as he thought of Blade.
He wasn’t sure if it was the nostalgia, or the shared action of making a random person laugh. Laughter could be a medicine after all, even if it wasn’t their own?
Somehow he felt like this encounter with the strange foreigner changed something between them, in a positive way, and he couldn’t wait to improve and rebuild his relationship with Blade more after this. Heh. Thank you. Sampo Koski.

Hello nim!! I'm truly happy for your 500 followers milestone! Since I'm also currently obsessed with honkai star rail, please consider writing a fic with "discovery theme" with lee jingyuan and ler danheng! Since danheng's memory has been "reset", It'll be fun if he "discover" what tickles is (probably from march/trailblaizer... or yanqing doing it to jingyuan), and since he's curious, he tries it on jingyuan.
I hope this idea is good!! Have a good day!
The Dragon's Lesson
Honkai: Star Rail - Dan Heng x Jing Yuan
Tumblr media
[500 Followers Milestone Event - "Discovery"]
A/N: Hii anon, thank you so much for your support, heheh. I tweaked a little bit the prompt, so I hope you don't really mind it. I had a reaaally hard time trying to figure how to write this pairing out, but It turned out quite nicely... I think. Anyway, I hope you like it, hehe ~
Summary: After spending some time with the general, Dan Heng finds out something pretty interesting after engaging in one of his games
Word count: 1702 words
Tumblr media
“Are you sure you don’t want to come with us?” March 7th pouted, crossing her arms while Caelus and Welt stood behind her, waiting for Dan Heng’s answer. After the latest events in the Xianzhou Luofu, the crew was finally able to catch some rest before departing to the next destination. And, thanks to the insistence of the general and the master diviner, Welt suggested they should, indeed, spend some more time around. But…
“Yes,” Dan Heng said with a slight smile, looking down before he resumed speaking. “There are a few things I need to take care of and… I’m not sure how welcomed it would be if I walked around the Xianzhou looking like… this,” he muttered, knowing very well how much he resembled a certain person.
The girl was ready to nag him some more, but feeling Welt’s touch in her shoulder, March decided to let it be. “Alright, just call us if anything happens, ok?” The man said, looking at the other two, “let’s get going, then, the ms. Fu Xuan wouldn’t like it if we showed up late.”
Slowly waving his hand, Dan Heng said goodbye to the members of the Astral Express as they walked out the room. It was a large, fancy place, requested by no other than the general himself to accommodate their honorable guests.
The general…
Dan Heng let out a sigh when Jing Yuan’s figure occupied his mind. He wasn’t sure how to feel about him yet, nor what kind of relationship his past self used to have with the general, but it wouldn’t be right to say that there was no feeling at all. It was just… uncertain.
Letting himself get lost in a turmoil of thoughts, one after the other, Dan Heng was caught off guard when someone suddenly knocked on the door. Shooting his eyes open, the vidyadhara turned his attention to the door, as whoever was on the other side knocked again. “Just a second,” he voiced, walking over. “Who’s there?”
He could feel the hesitation on the other side, letting the silence take place for a few seconds before the other person would finally speak. “Did I come at a bad time?” A male voice chuckled, making its identity clear.
Opening the door, Dan Heng was met with the general friendly gaze. A warm, but contained smile formed on his lips. “Not at all, general, but… do you need something? May I be of help?”
“Ahaha, there is no need for such formalities between us,” Jing Yuan said, shaking his head, “I was just hoping I could invite you for a walk. The gardens have been somewhat… lonely lately and I’d love to hear more about you.”
If Dan Heng’s tail was visible at that moment, Jing Yuan would be able to see it wagging in excitement.
“Ah… sure, it would be a pleasure.”
Taking a step back, Jing Yuan gave the other some room to step out, closing the door behind him before starting to walk side by side with the general. Dan Heng was still confused, not able to figure out exactly how he felt towards Jing Yuan and, even more, if those were his or Dan Feng’s feelings.
As they arrived in the gardens, Dan Heng couldn’t help but feel a sense of familiarity towards that place, but, at the same time, curiosity to walk deeper into it.
“You- I mean, Dan Feng used to come here often,” Jing Yuan said from behind, hoping to not disturb the other’s experience, “well, at least when Yingxing wasn’t around, hahah.”
Gently lifting a flower from the ground to feel its scent, Dan Heng let out a small chuckle hearing the other’s mistake. An habit that at first annoyed him, but, after spending more time with the general, he began to find it more amusing. “I see… and I suppose this was where you met him the most? What else did you two used to do when he came over?”
The general sighed in contempt, shaking his head as he chuckled softly. “It all used to happen when I was younger, hahah. You’ll have to apologize to me, but this old man’s head isn’t as good as it used to be back then.”
Dan Heng arched his eyebrow, turning his attention back to Jing Yuan, who was fondly smiling at him. “If you don’t wish to share it, general, there is no need to lie to me,” he pouted lightly, to the level where it was almost unnoticeable.
“I’m not lying,” Jing Yuan insisted, raising his hands in front of his chest. Dan Heng sighed, he didn’t seem to want to push the matter further, having a bad feeling about it, but he couldn’t help but feel a little upset. “I swear I can’t remember, don’t be mad ~” Jing Yuan mused as he walked over, watching the Vidyadhara Elder slightly turn his face away.
“You are acting just like Yanqing when I turn his spar requests down,” the general teased, noticing how Dan Heng insisted on treating him with silence. “If you keep this up, I’ll have to treat you like I treat him, then.”
Dan Heng needed to keep looking away, otherwise Jing Yuan would be able to see his lips curling into a smile as well. This playful approach of the general enticed his curiosity even further, making him wonder what he had up his sleeve.
Then, before he could wonder about Jing Yuan’s next step, Dan Heng felt a pair of hands attack both his sides, gently squeezing the spot. Letting out a surprised - and embarrassingly loud - squeal, Dan Heng quickly moved away from the general, turning back to him with an annoyed look. "What was that about?!"
"Oh, so you were listening to me, huh?" Jing Yuan laughed, wiggling his fingers menacingly towards Dan Heng. "But it seems you are pretty sensitive…"
"Don't you dare, general. Or I-"
"Or you what, Dan Heng? Come on, it's just a little tickling…" He took one step forward, making the other take one step back, trying to keep the distance between them the same despite Jing Yuan`s attempts to get closer.
"Or I will tickle you," Dan Heng said, not thinking properly before snapping back at the general. Those words, however, only seemed to amuse Jing Yuan even further, making his grin grow larger. There was no way he was letting such a discovery slip through his fingers like that.
"Oh? You'll tickle me?" He continued in a defiant tone, trying to read through him. If it was Dan Feng, he would be sent flying away in a blast of water for trying such a thing. But Dan Heng? He was pretty sure he could beat him in this kind of fight.
Tired of waiting, Jing Yuan decided to make the first move, reaching out his hand towards the other man. However, as he was merely inches away from Dan Heng, the general could only catch a glimpse of his tail moving in a defensive manner, landing a heavy - but not so strong - strike against his middle, enough to tackle him to the ground.
Letting out an audible grunt when his back hit the gardens’ ground, Jing Yuan could only let out a chuckle. “Sorry, sorry, I didn’t mean to ann-”
“I warned you, general,” Dan Heng interrupted him, smirking as he sat down on the other’s lap, his nimble hands already finding their way to Jing Yuan’s waist, pinching the spot through the cloth in his way. “And it seems… you are also a little sensitive, hm?”
A crooked smile quickly formed on his lips as some panicked giggles escaped. Wait, was he for real? Was he actually fighting back like that? The general tried to hold his wrists and push him away, twisting his torso as he attempted to escape. “D-Dan Feheng, wait- ahaAH!”
A louder cackle escaped right before he could say something else. The vidyadhara gave him a stern look, shaking his head in disapproval. “That’s not my name, general, how many times do I need to tell you that I’m not him?” Dan Heng said, feigning annoyance as he dug a little harder on Jing Yuan’s sides.
But there was no doubt this wasn’t the former elder, not a single one. After all, Jing Yuan knew very well Dan Feng would never engage in his “foolish and childish” games. Maybe that was the reason why his reincarnation could catch him off guard so easily.
“S-sohohohorry! A-ahAHah, y-you can stohohop now!”
“Didn’t you say yourself that “it’s just a little tickling”?” Dan Heng mused with a smile, clawing at the general sides, making his laughter grow a little louder. If anyone from the Astral Express saw him right now, he wasn’t sure how he would explain himself - but it was just too early to stop.
With his legs immobilized under Dan Heng’s tail’s weight and his waist straddled, there was very little room for Jing Yuan to squirm - not to mention the fact that the other placed himself in such a way that he was sitting just out of the general’s reach, make it actually really hard (or impossible) to properly fight back the tickling. “I-I wahas wrohohong, Dan Heheheng!”
Jing Yuan pressed his eyes shut and laid his head back as he gave himself into the laughter, unable to do anything else other than hope to receive some mercy. “AhahAH, j-juhust quihihit it!”
Dan Heng slowly stopped moving his fingers, chuckling to himself. It was a rare sight to see the general laugh so carefreely, a much different sight from his usual self. “Guess Yanqing isn’t the only one that needs to learn… how to properly pick up a fight, huh?”
“A-ah, I suppose… I still have a few things to learn…” Jing Yuan sighed in relief, shyly giggling at himself. Just when he thought it was over, the general could feel the tip of the other’s tail tapping against his leg. Taken by curiosity, he opened his eyes, looking up to Dan Heng to be met with a mischievous grin.
“So… let’s see if you really learned your lesson, general.”
“Hah… surely, I look forward your teaching, Dan Heng.”

Yes please!! Lee jingyuan ler danheng would be perfect <3, I feel like danheng can be an expert tickler, and to see jingyuan (with his big and alpha persona getting wrecked with tickles makes me super happy lol)
I'm glad you enjoyed star rail!! I hope this fandom will soon receive more attention!
Seeing the smug types get wrecked is just the best hehe 👀 I’ll have to put it in the back of my mind to start working on something eventually 👌
I think the fact that HSR got an EN dub is going to push it into a more accessible fandom category. I’m hoping to see a lot of content for it myself 🥰

Scholars have debated vociferously regarding the lotus motif prevalent in the tomb of Di and Fang. [cite to Qiling p. 238] Often considered to represent purity or rebirth, its repetitive placement in the tomb of a man known as the Demon Lord of the jianghu gives rise to speculation that his murderous reputation was the result of a concerted smear campaign or perhaps puffery to build up the formidable reputation of the Jingyuan Alliance. Idiotic Alternative theories include the possibility that Di Feisheng found religion at the end of his life, or that the lotus ornaments belonged to a woman he loved and lost. [do I really need to cite to that fucker Xiao? he's wrong wrong WRONG p.24]
[insert instances of lotus motif in the correspondence between Fang and Dowager Empress Zhaoling. cite W. Qiao's annotated extracts of Xi Dynasty epistolary records from the Palace archives.]
Excavation of the Tianji Mountain site continues to progress, but slowly, as the He family's reputation for hidden mechanisms and traps is well documented.  [expand and cite to X. Wu’s tomb trap disassembly technique article.]
“Professor Lee, is there an academic way of saying ‘Harold, they’re lesbians’?”  Siewbo Fong sighed despairingly, trying very hard not to keysmash and lose the last hour of work.
His academic advisor and reluctant landlord looked over his shoulder.  “That’s too conclusory, Siewbo.”
“Well I’ll put it in the conclusion, then.”  He leaned back with a pout.  “I’m just so sick of Xiao’s missing woman theory.  All of the evidence points to them being a couple.  The grave goods found in the tomb were for one household, not two separate ones as you would expect for two men of their stature.”
He flipped through the photos of the grave goods in the catalogue.  “Look!  Look right here! There was only one dog!”  He pointed at the figurine of the little yellow dog resting his head on a lotus flower.
Professor Lee shook his head with a tiny smile and patted his shoulder before turning away at the sound of the front door opening.
A tall man with broad shoulder strode in with a large dusty backpack that he dropped to the floor as he kicked the door shut behind him.  “Hey,” he said, stepping up to Professor Lee.
Siewbo tried not to look, but couldn’t stop himself.  He peeked through his eyelashes as Professor Lee kissed the other man in greeting.  He felt his face heat as the quick kiss offered by Professor Lee deepened as the other man pressed close.  An interminable time later (his heart was beating a little too fast, making him a little lightheaded), they separated and Siewbo could feel the other man looking at him critically.
“Huh, you’re still here?   Hsiang-i, I thought you said the stray was just staying a week.”
Siewbo felt his hackles rise, “Who are you calling a dog?!”
A Jianghu Mystery of the Middle Xi: The Tomb of Li Xiangyi
By Qiling, University of □□ (2024)
Tumblr media
Left: A photograph of the inscribed text at Li Xiangyi's tomb, reading, "The grave of the Sigu Sect's departed Sect Leader, Li Xiangyi". Right: Artist's sketch renditions from eye-level frontal and aerial side views, recreating how the tomb may have appeared during the Xi dynasty.
Among the numerous important archaeological finds from the Xi Dynasty, the tomb of Li Xiangyi is not the most well-known, nor has it yielded any artifacts of particular intrigue, yet it has raised questions about certain points in history since its discovery. The tomb constitutes a small site, near a mountainous overlook which should have received little common traffic at the time of construction. Its structure is in line with some other aristocratic burials of the Middle Xi period: aboveground, with a chamber at the center of a raised rectangular dais several meters wide, large enough to bear only a single individual. A stone marker, which has survived in legible condition until today, declares it the tomb of Li Xiangyi, leader of the Sigu jianghu sect.
Records about Li Xiangyi are found at other archaeological sites contemporary with this tomb, and so his name is not an obscure one. The Sigu Sect complex has already undergone excavation for nearly two decades, with evidence that Li Xiangyi spent several years there as its first sect leader and founder. His tomb is within two hours' walking distance of the Sigu site, though isolated in its location, compared to the Sigu Sect's grand mountain entrance. (The complex itself was inhabited well after his death; bamboo slips cite Qiao Wanmian as the Sigu Sect's next major leader some years after, who oversaw it for several more decades into the later Xi). In addition, the Baichuan-Pudu site, closer to the eastern coast and historically the headquarters for the Baichuan Court, is affiliated with Li Xiangyi. Its origins apparently began as an offshoot of the Sigu Sect, which grew into its own independent legal organization after his death.
Legends surrounding Li Xiangyi's life have been well-documented, both at Sigu and Baichuan-Pudu, but also in books and transcriptions of oral stories at sites around the country. These are dated to both the Middle and Late Xi periods, as well as a few scattered mentions in writings from the following dynasty. As a jianghu sect leader and swordsman, Li Xiangyi's reputation truly preceded him. Some tales speak of his early accomplishments, ridding towns of villainous tyrants and defeating criminals. Others talk about the founding of the Sigu Sect when Li Xiangyi was seventeen, and his subsequent missions leading his fellow swordsmen to protect the borders of the country. Not all of these narratives can be verified with surviving historical proof, and given Li Xiangyi's status in the shifting canon of folklore, the percentage that are hyperbole or fiction is likely significant. However, one that is true, and is the most frequently told story throughout these sources, is that of Li Xiangyi's death.
All texts place Li Xiangyi as having died relatively young, with some providing a specified age, generally around twenty. He perished in a duel with Di Feisheng, leader of the Jinyuan Alliance, a rival jianghu organization and presumed threat to the Sigu Sect. As the sources say, the Jinyuan Alliance killed Li Xiangyi's sect brother, Shan Gudao, and in retaliation he used the Sigu Sect to launch a war against the Jinyuan Alliance. His final battle was the last in this war, dying in the East Sea on Di Feisheng's ship. The Jinyuan Alliance in return was badly defeated by the Sigu Sect; excavations at its first compound in the last five years have shown evidence of siege, with fire having destroyed large parts of the buildings. Afterward, the Sigu Sect disbanded without Li Xiangyi, with only the Baichuan Court continuing to function, before being resurrected one decade later.
Given this knowledge we have about Li Xiangyi, the matter of his burial should be straightforward. He had a tremendous impact on the jianghu in the few short years that he stood at its peak. He died heroically, if tragically, to obtain justice for a brother. He was honoured with a tomb, standing guard over the sect he dedicated his youth to. Why, then, is said tomb regarded as somewhat of a mystery?
This tomb was first stumbled upon during extended surveys of the Sigu site territory, with excavation taking place within the last two years. Parts of the stone chamber and foundation of the dais have withstood time, as have most things left inside. The tomb bears no signs of looting. However, there are some details which, alongside discoveries from other archaeological sites, contribute to a shadow of uncertainty on the existing narrative of Li Xiangyi's life.
Firstly, is that the austerity of the tomb does not line up with what we know of Li Xiangyi. Although overall sufficient enough for someone of his great reputation, the tomb is rather plainly embellished. There are an unexpectedly small number of burial objects inside, with those present being neither rare nor expensive. For all his contributions to the jianghu, less money and resources were poured into remembrance of Li Xiangyi than seems proper for his time.
Secondly, and far more significantly, is that the tomb holds no human remains. Whether the fact of Li Xiangyi having no recovered body to bury was made public is unknown; if it was, we do not have record of it. Certainly those who arranged for the tomb to be built and sealed would have carried this with them the rest of their lives, but no one else may be accounted for. Granted, it is not impossible for a disappeared body to have been common knowledge or presumption, as Li Xiangyi was killed at sea with no guarantee of being found. Yet this, combined with the ordinary appearance of the tomb, causes the entire site to appear... a nominal thing. Constructed to maintain acknowledgement of Li Xiangyi's absence, though his death was only marked by words, rather than a physical state.
He was given a tomb, but was Li Xiangyi truly dead before it was built?
In terms of the aforementioned other archaeological site findings, there is one that potentially implicates Li Xiangyi's death at an interesting political junction, within the context of the dynasty. The Xi Dynasty was unstable and relatively short-lived, established after taking back the Central Plains and adjacent territories from the southern conquering state of Nanyin. It endured for just under two centuries, the first of which was fraught with pockets of conflict, with many jianghu skirmishes such as that between the Sigu Sect and the Jinyuan Alliance. The greatest threat to the Xi Dynasty (until its fall) came one hundred years after its founding. Recovered archival records from the Xi capital excavation report that remaining Nanyin loyalists attempted a coup, supported by jianghu organizations, including a restored Jinyuan Alliance (although whether Di Feisheng was still its leader at this time is unclear). This attack was ultimately unsuccessful, but important to note is that the leader of this renewed Nanyin force is described as being Shan Gudao, Li Xiangyi's former sect brother.
Although Li Xiangyi brought the Sigu Sect into a war upon news of Shan Gudao's death, that demise seems to have been faked, with Shan Gudao disappearing underground only to reappear as part of a later rebellion. Could Li Xiangyi have been aware of this? Was his reaction to Shan Gudao's apparent death genuine? Or part of a coordinated plan, using him as a reason to destroy the Jinyuan Alliance to eradicate any future resistance? Did Li Xiangyi, too, fake his death alongside Shan Gudao, in service of a shared cause? Were remnants of the Sigu Sect instructed to build an empty tomb, cementing Li Xiangyi as a dead hero so he could work in the shadows of the jianghu instead?
This is merely speculation, contradicted by the fact that if Li Xiangyi had indeed done as such, unlike Shan Gudao, after his duel with Di Feisheng he has no reappearance in any surviving records or at any archaeological site. As well, Li Xiangyi should have had no motivation for committing to such a scheme, with even loyalty to Shan Gudao a stretch to putting all the lives of the Sigu Sect on the line. That being said, history has a way of surprising the present, and this theory may not be entirely ruled out. At any rate, Shan Gudao's survival is a baffling accompaniment to Li Xiangyi's (lack of a) burial, one which will hopefully receive clarifying answers in future archaeological developments.
Perhaps the strangest piece of the puzzle concerning the end of Li Xiangyi's life, however, is Di Feisheng. After the Jinyuan Alliance was scattered by the Sigu Sect, stories regarding Li Xiangyi declared him dead and disappeared. Yet not unlike Shan Gudao, he became known in the jianghu once more about ten years later, witnessing the Nanyin attempted coup and living long after. His tomb remained intact, and was excavated eight years ago as part of the greater Tianji Mountain site project. The location of Di Feisheng's tomb is surprising, not only because it directly links him to the powerful and wealthy He clan of Tianji Manor, but also because he was buried beside their sole young master during the Xi Dynasty, Fang Duobing.
The son of financial minister Fang Zeshi and engineering master He Xiaohui, Fang Duobing became a notable youxia travelling the jianghu in the emperor's name, assigned in the wake of the attempted Nanyin coup. According to palace records, he was also betrothed to the Princess Zhaoling, although the marriage agreement was eventually formally dissolved. What is otherwise known of Fang Duobing was his admiration of Li Xiangyi, having styled himself as a follower and disciple of him during his youth. As well, one eye-catching artifact among Fang Duobing's burial goods was a preserved wooden replica of a blade, with Li Xiangyi's name carved near the hilt. Likely a children's toy, prized and kept safe throughout Fang Duobing's life.
The exact nature of the relationship between Di Feisheng and Fang Duobing is not entirely certain, but it must have been a very close one, for Di Feisheng to have the privilege of burial on the Tianji estate. This topic justifies future study for our understanding of the Tianji He clan, already known in prior generations for its socially subversive relationships, but pertinent to Li Xiangyi is that the man whose most infamous act was to kill him, was laid to rest next to one who revered him. Why was there such a bond between these two figures, if the stories of Li Xiangyi's death have had any truth to them? Did Li Xiangyi really die by Di Feisheng's blade? Did Li Xiangyi's empty tomb, plausibly signifying Di Feisheng's innocence, alter his relationship with Fang Duobing? Or indeed, did Li Xiangyi, the man himself, have a part to play in this?
No traces of him from this time remain in the archaeological record, true. But this should not be taken to mean without doubt that he was not alive then at all.
The discovery of Li Xiangyi's tomb has been an exciting development for studying this era of the Xi Dynasty, but it has also outlined doubt in areas of one man's life that were previously taken as likely facts. Li Xiangyi's tomb is scarcely fitting for his name as a founding sect leader, built more for the sake of its existence than anything else, and there was no body sealed inside to begin with. In addition, Shan Gudao— someone dear to Li Xiangyi— established a precedent of faking his death. Di Feisheng, known across the jianghu for killing the man, held a close bond with someone later in life who had personally looked up to Li Xiangyi, and so he may not have been fully responsible for Li Xiangyi's death to begin with.
What truly happened to Li Xiangyi, resulting in a tomb such as this? The past holds the answer, knowing things that we do not. Hopefully the future of archaeology will continue leading to new discoveries, and allow us to more completely understand the legend that was Li Xiangyi.

MAG Dream Team - a challenge;
have you ever wondered what your MAG Dream Team would look like?
i’ve given it a lot of some thought because i don’t want to write my dissertation right now and thought i’d share it here. so, there are some rules:
1. you can choose five gymnasts for your Team, of any nationality, as long as they are a senior (16+ years old) and from a FIG-associated country; 2. you also have one spot for a Specialist on each of the six apparatus, and one spot on the individual AA, same specifics as above; 3. you can’t repeat gymnasts! that means if you choose someone to be on your Team, they can’t be used as a Specialist, and vice-versa; 4. retired and suspended gymnasts can’t be chosen! you can choose injured/recovering gymnasts though, we’ll just pretend they’re healthy lol; 5. standart FIG rules for Team finals apply: you can send three gymnasts to each apparatus, all scores count;
i had a rough time choosing because i’m emotionally attached to a lot of gymnasts, and feel like sometimes i’ve made choices based more on how I feel about them rather than their actual results lol but anyway, here’s my Team:
1. Kenzo SHIRAI (JPN): the twisting prince, a precious ray of sunshine, please take a moment to realize how beautiful his smile is; 2. ZOU Jingyuan (CHN): squeaky clean all the time, beautiful routines, commentators mispronounce his name 98% of the time; 3. Ryohei KATO (JPN): rock solid, cheekbones that can cut through diamonds, beautiful smile, blinks a lot, has a pretty cat; 4. Kazuma KAYA (JPN): also rock solid, great cheekbones, his roar can awake your ancestors’ spirits; 5. Artur DALALOYAN (RUS): super elegant, i like his hairstyle and his respectful bow at the end of his routines, doesn’t keep spitting on himself like his russian teammates;
FLOOR EXERCISE - TEAM; 1. Kenzo SHIRAI (JPN): i mean, no explanation needed, right?; 2. Ryohei KATO (JPN): great balance of difficulty and execution, good landings; 3. Artur DALALOYAN (RUS): very elegant and clean, his opening tumbling pass from 2019 (front layout + double pike with a half turn) is so beautiful; FLOOR EXERCISE - SPECIALIST; 1. Carlos Edriel YULO (PHI): his execution is just SO GOOD, he is so clean and precise, he looks underage (mostly because of his hair + he is 1.5m) but he is actually 20 years old;
POMMEL HORSE - TEAM; 1. Ryohei KATO (JPN): clean and precise, there is nothing this man can’t do; 2. ZOU Jingyuan (CHN): his form is beautiful, difficult and very well executed routines, i wish he'd do flares because it’d look awesome; 3. Kazuma KAYA (JPN): pommel horse guy, beautiful lines, i feel like he can step up his game a little bit and add some extra difficulty to his routine (like a triple russian between the handles or a spindle on flares); POMMEL HORSE - SPECIALIST; 1. LEE Chih Kai (TPE): known for flaring through 95% of his routine and it’s AWESOME, his legs look insanely long and his hand placement is just so accurate and precise. he looks very serious but has a pretty smile. he is the kind of gymnast i’d like to take to the park and walk and feed the ducks and talk about diplomatics and modern art, u know? i like him;
RINGS - TEAM; 1. ZOU Jingyuan (CHN): not insanely difficult but his routines are clean and beautiful, moves very smoothly between positions; 2. Ryohei KATO (JPN): again, nothing this man can’t do, he blinks a lot but his face is always so calm, even on the craziest positions; 3. Artur DALALOYAN (RUS): he is not like great on rings, but he is better than Kenzo and Kaya, so go Artur. but as usual he is very elegant and has beautiful execution; RINGS - SPECIALIST; 1. Eleftherios PETROUNIAS (GRE): the Lord of the Rings and a greek god, i still think he is the best in the world;
VAULT - TEAM; 1. Kenzo SHIRAI (JPN): not a surprise that Kenzo is here, i love all his eponymous vaults; 2. Artur DALALOYAN (RUS): he shall enlighten us with the second best double pike out there; 3. Ryohei KATO (JPN): usually does a 5.2 but his execution makes up for the difficulty, great landings. he also looks very good on round, Harry Potter-style glasses; VAULT - SPECIALIST; 1. Marian DRAGULESCU (ROU): this man is a living legend, very consistent, no one does a Dragulescu like Dragulescu himself;
PARALLEL BARS - TEAM; 1. ZOU Jingyuan (CHN): 2017 and 2018 world champion, would’ve been on 2019 too (i’m not over this yet). unparalleled combination of difficulty and execution, so beautiful and elegant. commentators always talk about how light he is on his moves (i was curious and he weights like 46kg). i’d totally go out for a brunch with him; 2. Ryohei KATO (JPN): probably not his favourite event and i’m sorry to inflict this on him, but he is very precise and clean and i like his performances; 3. Kazuma KAYA (JPN): nice work, very clean and elegant, he can step up his game here too; PARALLEL BARS - SPECIALIST; 1. Oleg VERNIAIEV (UKR): he is not as clean as Yuanyuan but he is pretty elegant, nice difficulty. has some issues with consistency but he is a very good pbars worker. he is also very humble and has a nice smile;
HIGH BAR - TEAM; 1. Kazuma KAYA (JPN): has some cool German giants, very flexible and clean, nails the landing most of the time; 2. Ryohei KATO (JPN): he fell on his Voronin (B skill, back uprise + piked vault with a half turn, basically the move where they just jump over the bar) on Rio 2016 AA final and my heart is still shattered, but i trust him, he is awesome; 3. Artur DALALOYAN (RUS): very elegant on his releases, i like his style and the way his hair flows during giants; HIGH BAR - SPECIALIST; 1. Kohei UCHIMURA (JPN): there is absolutely no way that i’d leave King Kohei out of this. i was crushed when he said he wouldn’t be defending his olympic AA title, but i totally understand him now. he is nailing the Bretschneider (full twisting Kovacs) now, and he can also do a Liukin (full twisting Tkatchev, not insanely difficult but i like how it looks) and some pretty neat connections. beautiful, great balance of difficulty and execution, elegant, precise, nails the landing, long live the King;
ALL-AROUNDER; 1. XIAO Ruoteng (CHN): i like him a lot. has some small issues with consistency but he is very reliable, can deliver great routines, nails his landings. he grinds his own coffee beans every morning and cuts his friends’ hair. has a very particular way of vaulting, doesn’t sprint like other usually do. he could snap a neck if he wanted to, he is always humble and friendly and he uses an electric toothbrush. i like him. i’d go jet-skiing with him;
wow this took so much longer than i thought, but i actually enjoyed myself a lot doing this. sooo, feel free to take the challenge too! i’d love to see what you guys come up with! <3

Melbourne 2017 Gymnastics World Cup Day 1 Recap
I was lucky enough to watch training and warm ups today and witnessed lots of amazing gymnastics. Sanne Wevers of the Netherlands showed beautiful skills on beam with an awesome new mount sequence involving a back handspring mount connected to a Wolf Jump with a full turn connected to a full twisting back handspring. This connection gives Sanne 0.5 in CV and is one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen. I didn’t get to record it because she only did it once or twice today. She also did mostly the same routine as her Rio routine including her great dance element sequence seen below.
Tumblr media
The competition began with Women’s Vault and Mens Floor. Both of these events had some really strong gymnasts and some unfortunate falls. Wang Yan of China qualified in first place to the final with a combined vault score of 14.216. She did a great Rudi and a Double Twisting Tsukahara, her landings were a bit low but she managed to not give too much away to the judges. Wang was closely followed by Emily Little of Australia who received great crowd support. She had a beautiful Double Twisting Yurchenko with a small step out of the line followed by a Full Twisting Tsukahara that was super clean with a tiny hop forward. Naomi Lee of Australia was in third followed by Caitlin Todd of New Zealand. Both girls had great amplitude on their vaults and I can see upgrades coming in the future for both.
On the floor Kenzo Shirai led the way with a huge 15.100 on floor. He had a 7.1 D score but had steps and hops on almost all of his passes which resulted in the lower E score. He opened with an amazing Triple Twisting Double Layout followed by a Triple Twisting Double Tuck (seen below).
Tumblr media
Shirai was followed by Mu Jile and Wataru Tanigawa which both had beautiful clean routines but with much lower D scores which kept their Scores in the low 14s. Mu Jile had a beautiful three and half twist connected to a Rudi to open his routine and Tanigawa had an amazing stuck piked double arabian.
Next was Uneven Bars and Pommel Horse. Uneven Bars qualification turned out to be much closer than I expected. Luo Huan of China had beautiful clean lines and great difficulty to qualify in first place with a 14.400 (6.0). She had the classic Chinese bars skills including Healy, Ling, Healy 1/2 etc. In second place was Australia’s Rianna Mizzen who had an absolutely incredible routine. She begins with a combination of weiler kips ala Jordyn Wieber connected to a Maloney + Hindorff + Pak (OMG). She then transferred back to the high bar with a Van Leeuwen and finished her routine with a Toe 1/1 connected to a basically stuck full twisting double back. Liu Ting Ting was in third place in qualifications with a 14.066. She had a beautiful pak salto (seen below) but had struggles on some handstands but finished with a stuck double layout.
Tumblr media
Pommel Horse was next and featured 2012 Olympic Champion Krisztian Berki who had a gorgeous routine showing off his beautiful long lines. He scored a 14.800 which I though was a little low to be honest. Weng Hao and Zou Jiangyou were the next highest qualifiers with 14.466 and 14.433 respectively. They both had pretty good routines for what I saw but I wasn’t paying as much attention as I should have because pommel horse.
The final event was rings which was a pretty tight competition as well. China’s Wu Guanhua qualified in first followed by Ibrahim Colak of Turkey and countryman Zou Jingyuan. This final should be pretty close between these three and Koji Yamamuro of Japan.
I was also lucky enough to meet Lieke Wevers and Mary Anne Monckton (who were both amazing). I also got to meet some of my gymternet friends @flippinover and @thehonoraryamerican. I’m looking forward to the amazing competition that should continue for the next three days.

CHN and JPN Neck-To-Neck On 2017 Melbourne Individual Apparatus World Cup
On February 25, 2017, the first Individual Apparatus World Cup of 2017 in Artistic Gymnastics has concluded. It started on February 22, 2017 in Melbourne (AUS) as a part of the International Gymnastics Federation’s (FIG) ongoing World Cup series.
Olympic veterans and standout newcomers have shown off their skills to be able to stand at the podium at Australia’s Hisense Arena. Listed below are the top three winners for each apparatus.

Men’s Artistic Gymnastics Results
In the said event, China has started establishing their dominance in artistic gymnastics once again, after having been defeated in the last Olympic Games. Chinese gymnasts tumbled off with three of the five event titles awarded on the first day. On the finals, the Chinese men bagged a silver on floor from the newcomer Mu Jile, another silver and a bronze on pommel horse from Zou Jingyuan and Weng Hao respectively. The gold from still rings has been snatched by Wu Guanhua and Zou Jingyuan who tied at the first place despite being both newcomers, the latter also took home the gold in parallel bars. Unfortunately, they didn’t place any on the top three for vault and high bar.
However, China’s greatest opponent, Japan, is close on their heels. Olympian and two-time Floor World Champion Kenzo Shirai has put down his team gold medal from the Rio Olympics to be able to hold his new medals. He snatched the gold in floor, high bar and vault, finishing with a silver on parallel bars. His teammate Wataru Tanigawa bagged the bronze in vault while Yusuke Saito was awarded the same at high bar.
Although considered underdogs, other countries also had the spotlights shine on them. Turkey won quite a few to represent their country. Ferhat Arican won the bronze on floor and parallel bars while Ibrahim Colak got bronze as well on still rings. The host country, Australia, got two silver medals from Christopher Remkes at the vault and Mitchell Morgans on high bar. Hungary took home the gold on the pommel horse which was won by the veteran Krisztian Berki, once again proving his supremacy on the apparatus after being the 2012 Olympic Pommel Horse champion and not being able to compete in Rio.

Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Results
The Chinese men’s counterparts aren’t as lucky as they are if based on the medal counts, but their country didn’t lack on podium moments in this series. The female Chinese gymnasts bagged just five medals in total throughout the whole event. The gold on vault was snatched by Olympic team member Wang Yan. Liu Tingting and Huan Luo received their gold and silver medals at the podium responsively from uneven bars. Liu, a sixteen-year-old who passed on Rio due to injuries, returned with a vengeance. She also took home the gold in beam and the bronze in floor.
Australian female gymnasts took revenge for their male gymnasts as they accumulated six medals amongst places first to third. 2012 Olympian Emily Little took home the silver in vault and newcomer teammate Naomi Lee took the bronze. Little also has a bronze in beam and a gold in floor, leaving teammate Georgia Godwin for silver. Another teammate and standout Riana Mizzen was the only Australian medalist in uneven bars, a bronze.

The Melbourne World Cup is a part of the two-year FIG Individual Apparatus World Cup series. It began in November 2016 and would end in March 2018. Gymnasts gain points from each stop and the gymnast with the highest points in total at the end of the circuit is crowned World Cup champion on that event. The next stop on this circuit is Doha, Qatar on March 22-25.
