Tiny Treasure with Stripes
This little jewel, Ledebouria cooperi, is a tiny bulb with one leaf and an inflorescence of dusty plum blooms. Its common name is ‘Jessop.’  It may also be called “Cooper’s False Squill.” Each plant is smaller than a pinky finger. It lives in tight groups. I am attaching a former blog, ‘Itty Bitty Jessop’ about this plant below, since I did not wish to dig up bulbs in the rain in my…

Scilla mischtschenkoana, Asparagaceae
The Mishchenko squill was the first flower I set my eyes on as I started exploring the Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh, but it is also one of the first bulbs to blossom in the cold winter sun, providing much needed forage for the earliest pollinators, all the way to March.
Native to northern Iran and the southern Caucasus, the plant was introduced to the ornamental market in the 1930s and has been readily available and easy to establish ever since. While at first sight it might be hard to think of how a potentially toxic small bulbous plant could improve your garden -aside from benefiting the above mentioned pollinators- remember that most fruit trees are more productive when grasses are not allowed to surround them. Geophytes, plants that spend part of their life cycle dormant underground, are ideal to fill the gaps between the herbaceous and shrubby plants used to prevent grasses from taking over, especially if selected and located so that some of them are actively growing at any time of the year.
Remember when I wrote about the beautiful Ledebouria socialis? Before being renamed that way, it was known as Scilla violacea, and it is sometimes still sold under that name.

Finally made some time to do some maintenance and repotting. It saddens me greatly that my crassulas are in the state they're in, I hated having to chop their branches. But I know it's for the better and they're bounce back. I just need to be better with watering them, they're sitting under the eaves so they barely get any water even when it does rain.
I also did some much needed repotting of two of my ledebourias.
My kalanchoe I had to chop back because much of the stems had actually dried up and died somehow. There's two other branches I have sitting aside to grow roots.

Repotted all (but one) of my ledebourias that were in plastic pots to painted terracotta pots. With the leftover terracotta pots I also put some of my other succulents into them. I forgot to take a photo of the rest of them but my goodness, that was a lot of repotting.

The seed pods on my ledebourias finally burst but silly me did not plan well! The seeds either fell onto the counter and then got swept onto the floor, or bounced off the counter and landed on the floor. Anyways, it took me a long time to locate the tiny seeds on the kitchen floor. And then after potting them up . . . I dropped both the pots 😅 Fortunately, one seed stayed in the pot whereas I had to do a lot of sweeping and combing through swept up soil and dust to find it. There are actually three seeds but I forgot to take a picture of the first one. Hopefully they'll all sprout 🤞
