Tiny Treasure with Stripes
This little jewel, Ledebouria cooperi, is a tiny bulb with one leaf and an inflorescence of dusty plum blooms. Its common name is ‘Jessop.’ It may also be called “Cooper’s False Squill.” Each plant is smaller than a pinky finger. It lives in tight groups. I am attaching a former blog, ‘Itty Bitty Jessop’ about this plant below, since I did not wish to dig up bulbs in the rain in my…

Scilla mischtschenkoana, Asparagaceae
The Mishchenko squill was the first flower I set my eyes on as I started exploring the Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh, but it is also one of the first bulbs to blossom in the cold winter sun, providing much needed forage for the earliest pollinators, all the way to March.
Native to northern Iran and the southern Caucasus, the plant was introduced to the ornamental market in the 1930s and has been readily available and easy to establish ever since. While at first sight it might be hard to think of how a potentially toxic small bulbous plant could improve your garden -aside from benefiting the above mentioned pollinators- remember that most fruit trees are more productive when grasses are not allowed to surround them. Geophytes, plants that spend part of their life cycle dormant underground, are ideal to fill the gaps between the herbaceous and shrubby plants used to prevent grasses from taking over, especially if selected and located so that some of them are actively growing at any time of the year.
Remember when I wrote about the beautiful Ledebouria socialis? Before being renamed that way, it was known as Scilla violacea, and it is sometimes still sold under that name.

Díszes levelű csillagvirág (Scilla violacea)
Afrika trópusi területeiről származik. Leveleik díszesek, örökzöldek, szinesek és hosszúkásak, felül zöldek, lilásbordó pettyesek, fonákjukon bíborvörösek. Évente rendszeresen, vagy folyamatosan virágzik. Fehér virágai fürtvirágzatban nyílnak. Ez is hagymás növény.
Hazája Dél-Afrika, 10—15 cm magas. Fény- és vízigénye közepes. Florasca B típusföldbe ültessük. Tőosztással szaportható.
Virágzata jelentéktelen Hosszúkás tojásdad, lilásbarna, erősen sarjadzó hagymája a talajszint fölött helyezkedik el. 10—15 cm hosszú. 2—3 cm széles, kihegyezett, ezüstszürke levelei sötétzöld pöttyökkel és rajzolatokkal díszítettek. Levélfonáka bíborszínű. Fürtös virágzata apró, zöldes-fehér szirmú, ibolyalila porzójú virágokból áll. A kislakások növénye: A 12—14 C-os üvegezett verandán vagy a 20 °C-os hőmérsékletű szobában egyaránt megél. Kis helyen elfér, s átlagos gondozással jól fejlődik. Elvirágzás után szaporítsuk. Edénye inkább lapos legyen, s mivel a pangó nedvességre érzékeny, terítsünk az edény aljára 1,5 cm vastagon apró, folyami kavicsot. A szokásosnál kissé mérsékeltebben öntözzük. Teleltetéskor hideg helyen — az egyéb pozsgás növényekhez hasonlóan — csak 10—12 naponként kell öntözni.

Repotted all (but one) of my ledebourias that were in plastic pots to painted terracotta pots. With the leftover terracotta pots I also put some of my other succulents into them. I forgot to take a photo of the rest of them but my goodness, that was a lot of repotting.

the cactus exhibition was a little underwhelming BUT I got a variegated gasteria gracillis and a tiny scilla violacea, both for a very good price. Also I saw some pretty cool cacti but I took a camera that I wasn’t familiar with to take pictures and they all turned out blurry :/
#also the average age there was about 70 and almost all exhibitors were old men.....#I guess I can't expect a cool plant exhibition in a city like this#shrugs
