Paul McCartney: Inside the Songs | BBC Radio 4
Paul reads from his new book, The Lyrics (2021).
-
PAUL: ‘Got To Get You Into My Life’ is of Revolver and we were having fun trying out different instruments in the arrangements. And here we have the brass section. I’d been listening to a lot of American R&B and Soul, and there were horn sections on those records: Joe Tex, Wilson Pickett, Sam & Dave, people like that. That was enough impetus for me to think, “I’ll have a go at that!” That’s often how things happen with me: I’ll hear something on the radio and think, “Wow! I’m gonna do my version of that!”
[...]
It’s interesting to work with another artist recording one of my songs as it makes me ask questions about how it should sound. Should this be exactly the same as ours? Or should things be changed around a bit? Some songs have more breathing room than others and the question comes up whether to improvise on a song like this. If your aim in doing a concert is to please people, it’s probably best to leave the song alone. I read recently that Bob Dylan thinks that he does the songs pretty much as they sound on the records, but I don’t agree. We went to one of his concerts recently and it was sometimes difficult to recognize his songs. And in The New York Times he was quoted as saying he didn’t improvise; I laughed me head off when I heard that! It was the funniest thing I’d read for a while. He’s a great guy, but you just don’t know whether he’s being tongue in cheek.

More song asks for @charlieaffair
1. your favorite song If I really really had to try and choose, it would have to be by Daddy. It would have to be a Whitesnake song... Only My Soul.
2. the first song you remember loving It’s called The Little White Rabbit, it’s a Bulgarian children’s song. The little white rabbit Played all day In the nearby forest With a doe And then it got dark, and the little white rabbit got lost in the forest. Then the cricket’s bride, the firefly, found the rabbit, and lit his way home. 3. a song that reminds you of summer Santana’s Smooth was a hit in one of the hottest summers of my life, 1999.
4. a song you haven’t heard in years When I was a teen, three of Michael Jackson’s nephews had a band called 3T. I haven’t listened to them for a long time. I saw the boys trying to defend their late uncle earlier this year, when Leaving Neverland came out. I don’t want to listen to them. 6. a song that reminds you of your favorite book Winnie the Pooh is one of my favorites. The audio book with Stephen Fry as Pooh has a few songs. One of them goes, It’s a very funny thought that if bears were bees they’d build their nests in the bottom of trees And that being so, if the bees were bears, we wouldn’t have to climb up all these stairs.
But Stephen is convinced that he can’t sing, so he just recites the poem and a piano plays the melody :)
7. a song that makes you want to dance Twisted Transistor by Korn :):) It’s about transistors. Joke, actually it’s about transistors, just like Rammstein’s Radio. Transistors you put between your legs.
8. the best song from your favorite album Sailing Ships is the best song on Whitesnake’s Slip of the Tongue album. It has Sveve Vai.
9. a song that makes you want to cry The Eagle Flies Alone by Arch Enemy. I wish I was as free as the character in that song. And From the Heaven of My Heart by Amophis.
10. a song that makes you feel young Wilson Pickett’s 6345789 . Just because it’s an old song :P

“If You Need Me (Second Version)” — WILSON PICKETT
On one hand, this is a textbook example of a deep soul ballad. The mournful pace, the washes of organ, and the vocal that devolves into nothing but anguished howls before it’s over tell us this man’s in pain, but also that he has some hope the person who’s gone might, in fact, pick up the phone one day.
On the other hand, it’s an example of what happens when you turn all those elements up to 11, and the results are instructive. The band keeps going for almost six minutes, giving Pickett ample room to do his thing, and he improvises lustily. Most of the time he sounds completely lost in the moment, and the abandon with which he shouts is contagious. At other times, though, it’s clearly too much — as he seems to realize just before the band winds down, saying, “I better leave this one alone y’all.”
I’m pretty sure that’s Pickett, the professional, telling his band he’s done all he can and any more would break the spell. But he still sounds like Pickett, the narrator of this song, reminding himself he can’t keep dwelling on this particular loss, as it’s just too dangerous — to the extent that, in his very next breath, he ignores his own advice and tries to turn what he just said into an actual part, singing, “I better leave it alone,” so that those become the last five words of the song.
The combination is as good an example as I’ve ever found how the best soul singers use emotion as an instrument, as much as their voices. The pain is real, even when he’s faking it.
(Note: Pickett’s original version of this tune came out in 1962; I don’t believe this 1972 remake, cut in Muscle Shoals, was ever issued until it was included in the amazing boxed set, Funky Midnight Mover, which collected all his Atlantic recordings.)

I got a taste of traveling alone at the end of my trip spanning New Zealand, Australia, and Bali, but I needed more of it and my 30th birthday was calling me.
.
I packed my bags and headed on foot from my Baltimore townhome to hitch the train bound for the airport that would fly me across the pond to land in London during a November that felt almost timeless.
.
I set out hitting the London city-streets in Camden, home to Amy Winehouse, the Koko Theater, and all those driven by a culture that made art look effortless by putting every last drop of blood they had in it.
.
Just beyond the buzz and hum happening on Camden Street were the old gardens of Regent Park.
.
In a stillness after a Strongbow-inspired night and a cast of Camden characters, I clicked this photo in the London drizzle that gave me a sense that maybe this was the whole picture of the only thing I came for.
—————————————————————-
I’m excited to hear the news coming from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
.
From @sussexroyal quoting HRH Prince Harry
“I truly believe that good mental health - mental fitness - is the key to powerful leadership, productive communities and a purpose-driven self…”
.
Prince Harry & Oprah are partnering, co-creating, and producing a new series on mental health focusing on illness & wellness, working to inspire viewers to have an honest conversation about the challenges each of us face.
.
They will be advocates for those who silently suffer, to empower us to get the help & support we deserve as well as how to equip ourselves to survive & thrive, working to break the stigma surrounding mental illness and to broaden the conversation on mental wellness.
.
“...sharing global stories of unparalleled human spirit fighting back from the darkest places, and the opportunity for us to understand ourselves and those around us.”
.
This hits very close to home for me. What is your story that brought you out of the dark and into the light?

.
Late September Rose ~ 4.11.19
.
Late September Rose
That didn’t bloom until it was almost winter,
When the leaves on trees were falling,
When the Sun already began setting.
She held onto her bud until she burst into bloom
And she was showered from the bower
That held the wealth of God’s tears
Like a luck that rains down from the Heavens.
.
Late September Rose,
You have opened. What more is there to do
But to sit and be beautiful
While others admire you,
Though you wonder if anyone will see how deep your roots go
And how far your bloodline links you back
To the days they said were golden.
Can they see your ancient ways and hear how it is calling?
.
Late September Rose,
You are perfect in this very moment.
You can rely on the rest of us to support you
Though times seem rough and the wind is harshly blowing,
And you need things to slow down
So it doesn’t get the best of you.
But you’ll see it all was meant to make you stronger
And you were made to last the winter.

Using Names in Song Lyrics
Using someone’s name in lyrics you write can be powerful. And I probably don’t need to tell you that there approximate 8 million names of females who men have written about. There are female artists who write about names as well, but ironically, they are mostly woman as well. Joline by Dolly Parton, for example is about her begging another romantic rival to leave her relationship alone with her “man”. There are quite a few songs with male names in them, but by far more famous songs with female names.
This can be tricky. Because lyrics with names can get cheesy. The cheese factor is big. It needs to be written correctly and musically composed correctly. Here are some things to think about when writing lyrics with names in them.
When using a name in song lyrics sometimes it takes relatability out of the song for the listener. Except of course whose name is the same name in the lyrics. Think about it, I bet you can think of a song, a famous song, that sings your name. Because you think it could relate to you…even if it doesn’t at all. If it does it makes an even greater impact.
Using name in lyrics can be very loving and romantic. It shows the person you care enough about them and thinking enough about them to put their name in to a piece of artwork. That’s pretty cool.
Names in lyrics are fun and can have a great impact for the person you are writing it for. If the lyrics and song are good enough, they can have a very wide appeal – as you can see from this ridiculously long list of names from the website flashback.com:
1. Eleanor Rigby – The Beatles
2. Cecilia – Simon & Garfunkel
3. Suite Judy Blue Eyes – Crosby, Stills and Nash
4. Martha My Dear – The Beatles
5. Along Comes Mary – The Association
6. Lola – The Kinks
7. Brandy (You’re a Fine Girl) – Looking Glass
8. Mandy – Barry Manilow
9. My Sharona – The Knack

12. Michelle – The Beatles
13. Beth – KISS
14. Gloria – Them
15. A Rose for Emily – The Zombies

Caleb Wilson Continues To Produce For Bruins; Utah Matchup Preview
Caleb Wilson Continues To Produce For Bruins; Utah Matchup Preview
Offense
While the Bruins have shown improvement across the board during their last three games, the biggest reason that they are finally competitive is the improved play of their offense. The Bruins’ 0-4 start saw them in several games at halftime but were simply unable to put any points on the scoreboard or move the ball in any meaningful way in the second half. At the end of the day, you have to score points to win, and this Bruins offense just wasn’t able to do that.
They now look like a Chip Kelly offense. Maybe it’s simply becasue the bar was set so low, but I’m pretty excited about what Kelly has to offer this program moving forward.
Dorian Thompson-Robinson – Quarterback
Game Stats: 5/8 103 Yards, 1 TD
DTR continued his hot streak with a good start to this game before leaving early with an injury. It’s looking like Wilton Speight will get the start this week, and he’s a more than capable backup. In fact, I wanted the Bruins to start him earlier in the season when DTR was clearly holding the offense back. DTR seems to have progressed since then. But while he’s out, Speight showed last week that after shaking the rust off, he’s able to keep this offense rolling as it requires.
Utah Utes Preview: The Utes have a big-time secondary led by Javelin Guidry, Corrion Ballard, and Julian Blackmon. They specialize in shutting down receivers, breaking up passes, and intercepting the football. Regardless of who plays QB, this will be a tough one for UCLA, and the quarterback will have to take care of the football.
Game Day Grade: B
Current Draft Stock: Underclassman
Caleb Wilson – Tight End
Game Stats: 6 Rec, 82 Yards
UCLA’s increased productivity in the passing game seems to have coincided with Caleb Wilson finally getting his fair share of catches in the gameplan. This clearly has been an asset for the Bruins offense and has dictated how defenses choose to play them. While this wasn’t Wilson’s best day, he still put up impressive numbers and continues to prove his worth to this offense.
Utah Utes Preview: With how good a job this Utah secondary has done shutting down wide receivers, Wilson should get his fair share of targets to help the QB in the passing game. He also must play well in the run game to help out the depleted offensive line.
Game Day Grade: B
Current Draft Stock: 3rd Round
Andre James – Offensive Line
James’s father passed away five days before the game. He didn’t practice, yet he chose to play in this game. That alone should be worth an A grade. But not only did he play, but he was also productive while doing so. This run game continues to roll with Joshua Kelley. However, the loss of Justin Murphy may be a concern moving forward.
Utah Utes Preview: Leki Fotu, Hauati Pututau, Mike Tafue, and Bradlee Anae have all been impact players on this exotically named and dangerous defensive line. James will have his hands full in this one. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a few breakdowns up front here and there.
Game Day Grade: A
Current Draft Stock: 3rd Round
Defense
This game was a bit of a shootout. The good news for the Bruins defense is that they’re starting to make plays on the ball, getting key turnovers in key moments. The bad news is that they were absolutely demolished on the ground in this game. That has to be fixed.
Keisean Lucier-South – Linebacker
Game Stats: 4 Tackles, 1 Pass Defensed
We know Lucier-South has the playmaking ability, and he’s been far from a liability on this defense. However, this was not his most impressive game. Against Utah, he and the rest of the front seven will have to do a better job corralling the run than they did against, or it’s going to be a long day.
Game Day Grade: C
Current Draft Stock: N/A
Adarius Pickett – Safety
Game Stats: 7 Tackles
A quiet day by his standards, but Pickett seems to be a pretty sure bet to play well week in and week out. Zack Moss at the running back position for Utah needs to be the priority for the defense this week. However, the Utes have quietly been very efficient throwing the football as well. This will be a tough matchup for the Bruins defense, and they’ll have to be perfect to win–especially considering the fact that the offense is likely to struggle against this Utes defense.
Game Day Grade: B
Current Draft Stock: 3rd Round

20 THOUGHTS: 2018, The Sequel
2018. Richmond are reigning premiers. The Bulldogs are no longer reigning premiers.
What a bizarre collection of twelve words you would have never thought possible.
Who would be so brave to think we can’t have another drought broken, an expansion side’s first, or perhaps another fairy-tale for a side coming from outside the eight to be a flag contender within a year?
The more things change, the more things stay the same. The same coaches under the pump this time last year are still under the pump, messer Hardiwck aside. Umpiring will be umpiring, the MRP will be the MRP, and congestion will no doubt come up before Easter.
Strap yourselves in, another six months of that all too familiar love-hate insomnia kicks off once again.
1. Where to start? Well James Hird coming back to footy is an interesting one. Sure he had some failures as a senior coach, some bigger than others, but no-one can question that he would be astute in the right position. But the idea that it would be controversial, that it needs AFL approval, that its bad PR, please! If the United States is ok with JAL flying direct from Tokyo to Honolulu given that flight path’s history, we can be ok with James Hird back in football I think.
2. The big story of the year, the re-emergence of Fremantle for mine. They can get at least nine wins at their new Optus Stadium, two of which will be in Derbies. They finished first after the home and away as soon as two years ago, yes the wheels fall off soon thereafter, but with a fit superstar captain, a forward line of McCarthy, Walters, Ballantyne, Bennell, Matera, a backline of Johnson, Hamling, Pearce, Wilson, Spurr, Sandilands down to Fyfe, Neale, Mundy, the Hill brothers, plus superstar kids Blakely, Logue, Brayshaw and Cerra, finals are certainly doable and with an ounce of luck a top four show. Wilson will prove to be a great get and don’t forget, Ross Lyon can definitely coach a top four team.
3. Essendon and Port Adelaide are the off-season big spenders, bringing in a plethora of mature aged recruits. For the Bombers, it will help, they are still on the rise, but it’s not flag material just yet. For Port, as I’ll touch on shortly, they will go up, they should have won a final last year and then been in a position to have a crack at GWS for a spot in a Prelim, they are going to be dangerous.
4. The Cats though, got the Son of God back, but what does it do for them? Not tonnes. Dangerfield, Ablett and Selwood will win them many games, but they can’t all have 35 and kick 3, the backline needs a chiro, the forward line has a 1990s full forward stuck in a 2018 team, too many question marks. If they didn’t have Danger, it's a bottom ten team.
5. The new Optus Stadium looks an absolute treat. But alas, all the fixtures this year are either afternoon or twilight, we won’t get the spectacle of a big night game, why, because it would be too late into Melbourne. We can stay up past 10pm on a Saturday if it means Perth gets a big evening game, surely?
6. How’s bout The Footy Show? Oh dear. As popular as Barnaby Joyce at a family values workshop, or an office singles mixer, or a Mardi Gras party.
7. Tom Lynch, my pick, he heads to Collingwood. Not a biased view, but would you be content to put your only key forward talent down back in 2018, leaving an injury-prone All-Australian CHB and an American experiment as your only inside 50 targets if you had confidence in securing one of the best tall forwards in the game for 2019? Yes. The Pies have massive cap room, Pendlebury, Treloar and Sidebottom are all on less than market value, they stop paying Heath Shaw this year as well.
8. Robbo watch, his Top 50, Daniher at 8, Kennedy at 10, have there been too many Melbourne Bitters for Robbo over Summer? Here we go again, another six months of sloppiness?
9. He had Dangerfield at one, Martin at two. Who he had at three will handsomely be on top by year’s end – Fyfe is the best when fit.
10. Carlton play finals in 2019 - Cripps, Curnow, Dow, O'Brien, Petrevski-Seton, McKay, Garlett, Marchbank, Weitering, Pickett - we believe Bolton can coach, so 2019, September, Carlton, bank it.
11. Lance Franklin will surpass 900 goals this year, age 31. Dunstall did the same thing as a 30 year old, finished with 1254, third all time. Buddy is a Hall of Fame Legend lock, arguably the best many of us will ever see.
12. Can't have State of Origin, can't save Tasmanian football, but we can junket International Rules to the New York Red Bulls stadium sometime in late Spring? AFL against Gaelic in a sport neither plays in the backwaters of New Jersey - if Trump was AFL CEO then that sounds like something he would do. Pull your head in Gil!
13. Melbourne and St Kilda. Should both play finals. But are either Goodwin or Richardson the next Clarkson and able to take a team the whole way? Not yet convinced. Watch Ross Lyon and the Dockers scoot past one, maybe both.
14. Giants are the big ticket this year and this columns likens their plight to the familiar children’s fable Goldilocks. The eighteenth side is kinda like the Three Bears’ porridge, 2016 was too hot, 2017 was too cold, 2018 will be just right.
15. Where are Hawthorn this year? O'Meara hurts opposition when he isn’t hurt himself, Mitchell doesn't really hurt for the amount of pill he accumulates, how many other real weapons do they have? Lucky they have Clarko, that will probably account for half their wins alone.
16. Aside from Hawthorn's third flag, most premiers are boosted by getting off to great starts. The fixture heavily influences that. It’s what quells Collingwood's overdue rise back up the ladder, they'll be lucky to be 3-3 at best, but Port should be at worst 5-2 going into the Round 8 Showdown with the Suns in China to follow. Get on.
17. Another one on the AFL… why are we playing the AFLW Grand Final squeezed into a lunchtime in the middle of Round One when had they moved their season one week earlier the pinnacle match could have had a clear weekend from the men’s game, all to themselves? One thing to make a dumb decision but especially at the expense of an outstanding alternative?
18. Brownlow pick? Well it has to be Fyfe. If you want a smokey, Matt Crouch at $34 provides lovely value.
19. Rising Star? Andrew Brayshaw ($15) from Paddy Dow ($9) in a close one-two finish. Some value would be Sam Murray ($21) at Collingwood, should play 22 games and will average 20 touches a week.
20. And the final eight, here’s what we’ve settled on: GWS, Adelaide, Richmond, Port Adelaide, Fremantle, Essendon, Sydney, Geelong

PMP Critique: “Pickett’s Pocket Guide” Handbook
For my pre-major project, I am putting together a locational focused booklet designed for my final major project story book. The booklet will explore the background and development of a new world in which my protagonist finds himself.
My story focuses on a beastly yet cultivated character and the unlikely bond between him and a far less civilised scavenger child he encounters following his banishment to an autumnal forest land. My pre-major project will take form of a twisted travel guide, illustrated with a biased, distorted view of the new, therefore challenging my character’s ideas of what to expect. Everything that is illustrated in the guide will be revealed as something far less frightening in my final major project book and I wish to plant the guide in the beginning of my book, referring to it throughout the story and taking you on the same journey as my main character.
My overall area of practice is character design focused and I will be thinking about the ways in which my characters thrive and fit into their surroundings. Each illustrated page will explore a part of the land and characters will be present throughout. My pre-major project and final major can exist independently but will link and support each other to incite the art of reveal and perception in illustrated narrative.
This is a digital concept drawing of my main character for my FMP who the booklet will be assigned to. His name is Pickett (after Wilson Pickett) and I am contemplating calling my PMP booklet “Pickett’s Pocket Guide: A Manual for the Newly Banished” or something similar. Although Pickett himself will not be illustrated in the handbook as it has been given to him, the cover and certain pages will feature very similar beasts.
One of the main things I want to highlight in this handbook is the new world’s inhabitants, the species that rule this autumnal forest land (the deuteragonist in my FMP will be one of these.) I have decided that in the guide they will be depicted as fleshy, gangly beings with overgrown beastly heads who capture and enslave other creatures for riding. In the FMP it will be revealed that they are just human-like creatures wearing large crafted heads who live with harmless beasts that help them get around. I wanted the forest inhabitants to be tribal and I know that many existing tribes make masks and headwear in the shape and style of human and animal heads. For example, Asara Mudmen of Papa New Guinea. I wanted my inhabitants to have the heads similar to those of forest animals (i.e., a fox, a wolf, an owl, a squirrel, a hedgehog etc.) I have contemplated naming them “Nakey Bones” as I feel that this is how the beasts from Pickett’s world would see them.
I have been playing with the idea of having a short instructional rhyme with each page that is relevant to the image, also putting more fear into Pickett on his involuntary travels. Below is an illustration of an idea I have for a forbidden location in the forest land. Gigantic trees bearing screaming faces that are found in the darkest parts of the forest land. However, in my FMP it will be revealed that this giant tree is essentially a block of flats for the forest land inhabitants, and the screaming faces are not eyes and mouths, but windows and doors.
So far I have only experimented with the actual content and the composition and have not yet explored use of colour, which will be a very important part of the final outcome for my pre-major project. I plan to use the colour red consistently throughout the handbook. The new world is an autumnal forest land and I want every tree to be tall and bear red leaves. This also means I can describe the place as blood stained in my handbook, which will be a terrifying prospect for my character.
I want the forest to be filled with ghastly creatures big and small and I will depict them as if they are guarding the land, and intimidating Pickett into submission where his only safe place is underground. The handbook will illustrate another beast like him alone in a cave, suggesting this is where he will be for the rest of his days.
I drew the tiny thumbnail for the beast in the cave after the bigger illustration and I actually prefer it. I think because of the weight and position of his body and the shape of the cave. Below is a sketch of my most recent idea of illustrating the Nakey Bones making a sacrifice around fire. I thought this could be revealed in my FMP as dance and celebration. I want to develop the bodies more, making them a bit less human and more grotesque for the handbook.
Other sketches I have made for my manual include ideas for a page about food and survival. Beware of pumpkins! It depicts a beast in a vegetable patch, picking a pumpkin from off the ground only to find that it is alive and the pumpkin is a head attached to a body in the soil. By pulling the pumpkin-man from the ground, the beast has inflicted danger upon himself. In my FMP book, it will be revealed that pumpkins are not alive, they just have faces carved into them as part of tradition in the forest.
For the next couple of weeks I will be resolving ideas and drawing up the final pages of illustrations for my booklet and colouring them digitally on PhotoShop. I will then proceed to organise and assemble each page on InDesign, preparing them for print.
