The cabbage leather coral

The cabbage or brassy leather coral, Sinularia brassica is a commonly traded, but often underappreciated, alcyonarid octocoral. Colonies of Sinularia sp. grow in a variety of morphs, reflecting their environments of settlement and growth. S. brassica are identifiable by their thin, blade-like lobes, which have evolved to maximize the exposure of their tissues to sunlight. Like many other soft and stony corals, the slow glowing alcyonarids of the genus Sinularia accommodate important, photosynthetic symbionts within their own tisues.

These alcyonarids are typically of subdued coloration, from grey to mauve, but variants exist with other colors including green. Another supposed species of Sinularia, S. dura, is now recognised to be a growth morph of S. brassica, rather than a separate but closely related species. As a clade, the genus Sinularia is systematically confusing, because the environment of their growth and settlement strongly influences their appearance through their adaptation. Fortunately, S. brassica is well enough defined now that S. dura has proved to be its morph.

S. brassica ordinarily grows attached to hard substrates, commonly on the periphery of reefs abutting sediments, but not in areas where it may be innundated by sand. It may grow attached to vertical inclines, or under overhangs. Conversely those S. brassica colonies bearing 'S. dura' morphology, can be found at more shallow depths, on flat areas of the reef or in adjacent lagoons, typically associated with coral rubble. Therefore S. brassica is not associated with high surge environments, where certain other Sinularia sp. can be present.

Cabbage corals neither need nor appreciate bright light in the aquarium, nor do they appreciate strong turbulence. Rather, they can survive and thrive in low lighting and flow conditions, enough to sustain their internal symbionts, and ruffle them gently. In addition to harnessing symbionts as a source of energy, Sinularia sp. are heterotrophic with a noted tendency towards consuming phytoplankton. However they require no additional feeding in a typical aquarium. This species is ideal as a coral for beginners, because it has low needs and is forgiving of minor mistakes by novice coral fanciers.
