Had a nightmare in Portuguese and woke up agitated at 3am thinking in full French. Turned on the bed and saw I had a message. I spent the next 5 minutes staring at my cellphone trying to make sense of what seemed like nonsensical keymashing -until I realised I was trying to understand Spanish with an English focused brain. I just, what
truly, what
(native language is Spanish btw lmao)

Another thing that may help you learning and practicing vocabularies, is describing images you find online (or you took). Just take any random image and state each color + objects, or even describe what you see around you in the same way (forniture, stationery, clothing... just choose a topic and go). You can practice singulars/plurals, nouns' genders, articles, adjectives (little/big, near/far), colors and whatever you want, according on how you feel and what you have just learnt.
Just pls remember to always save your texts especially if you're writing here on tumblr. Mine just got suddenly eaten away and I have to start it all over (which may be a good thing cause I get the chance to re-think about everything, but still...)

Studying Japanese and trying to figure out my game plan for the next few days before my classes start again.
First, I want to address the idea that learning new languages is easier after the first one. I was raised close to mono-lingual (caveat: with one language spoken but exposure to another which I never learned) and am an intermediate Chinese speaker due to, in my mind, plain hard work. What I'm trying to say, is that my second language (Chinese) was something I learned as an adult.
Learning new languages is absolutely much easier after the first. It's true.
I'm going through all the grammar in my textbook before brute-forcing the full vocabulary used in each section. Why? Because that's what worked for me in Mandarin.
Really, the meta of learning languages is built by experience. I spent almost a decade on/off failing to learn. In the last couple of years, I went from largely beginner with some exposure to intermediate. I figured out what worked for me, and now I'm applying it to Japanese.
The first 5 years of my language learning wasn't spent learning much of the language- it was partly passive: forced exposure to the language to build roots. The active-time itself was spent learning how to learn, the new language was just the media by which I learned how to fail.
I'm not saying grammar-before-vocab works for everybody. I'm just saying it took a long time for me to make procedures about how I learn and to build the discipline to follow it. (And, make procedures that are fun to follow!)
If you're working on your first new language, don't despair. It does get easier. Learn to learn.

Duolingo Sucks, Now What?: A Guide
Now that the quality of Duolingo has fallen (even more) due to AI and people are more willing to make the jump here are just some alternative apps and what languages they have:
"I just want an identical experience to DL"
Busuu (Languages: Spanish, Japanese, French, English, German, Dutch, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, Polish, Turkish, Russian, Arabic, Korean)
"I want a good audio-based app"
Language Transfer (Languages: French, Swahili, Italian, Greek, German, Turkish, Arabic, Spanish, English for Spanish Speakers)
"I want a good audio-based app and money's no object"
Pimsleur (Literally so many languages)
Glossika (Also a lot of languages, but minority languages are free)
*anecdote: I borrowed my brother's Japanese Pimsleur CD as a kid and I still remember how to say the weather is nice over a decade later. You can find the CDs at libraries and "other" places I'm sure.
"I have a pretty neat library card"
Mango (Languages: So many and the endangered/Indigenous courses are free even if you don't have a library that has a partnership with Mango)
Transparent Language: (Languages: THE MOST! Also the one that has the widest variety of African languages! Perhaps the most diverse in ESL and learning a foreign language not in English)
"I want SRS flashcards and have an android"
AnkiDroid: (Theoretically all languages, pre-made decks can be found easily)
"I want SRS flashcards and I have an iphone"
AnkiApp: It's almost as good as AnkiDroid and free compared to the official Anki app for iphone
"I don't mind ads and just want to learn Korean"
lingory
"I want an app made for Mandarin that's BETTER than DL and has multiple languages to learn Mandarin in"
ChineseSkill (You can use their older version of the course for free)
"I don't like any of these apps you mentioned already, give me one more"
Bunpo: (Languages: Japanese, Spanish, French, German, Korean, and Mandarin)

Which is better: “imparo l’italiano” or “sto imparando l’italiano”? Can you give a little overview of when to use which tense (well, technically aspect)?
"Sto imparando" means you're currently learning sth (literally translates as "I am learning *these days/rn*"), so especially if during this period of time you're studying Italian, I'd translate it using this form and not the simple present (=imparo l'italiano).
The progressive gerund (stare + gerundio) talks about something that is happening in a specific moment like e.g. I'm writing this post = sto scrivendo questo post; but it can be used also for actions you may repeat in a short amount of time (like studying Italian these days/months/lately). It's like answering to the English "What are you up to now/these days?"
The indicative simple present is more general, I could see that as e.g. Imparo l'italiano per andare in vacanza a Roma = I learn italian to be able to go to Rome on vacation. The acception you're giving with the simple present here is similar to "I made this decision of learning Italian" = Ho deciso di imparare l'italiano. But it doesn't refer to a specific time frame: if you used the progressive gerund instead, you'd have made it clear that you have started (and currently are) learning Italian these days.
Ofc present simple still indirectly refer to present actions, but again the time is not directly set. e.g. Scrivo questo post = I write this post (now? partly now and partly later? tomorrow? who knows...). If you want to state a timing with simple present, you better state it clearly using "domani"=tomorrow or "il prossimo mese"= next month, or other time-related sentences similar to these. e.g. Adesso scrivo questo post = Now I write this post [triggering: it says "now", but you're talking about the decision you took of writing a post: like you're sitting at your desk and opening your tabs; but you're not really saying you're writing it in this moment -you are going to do that in few seconds-. To say you are "doing" your action, use the progressive gerund: (adesso) sto scrivendo questo post = (in this exact moment) I am writing this post].
Hope this helps! Remember to check the grammar masterpost, verbi section, for more insights about moods and tenses (or send another ask)!
