@ghostsxagain sent -> 'shivers' for leander's reaction to mateo trailing his fingers down leander's spine.
It's the middle of the night, or early morning — Leander can't tell which, only knows that he's sleep drunk and has awoken confused and disoriented again. His heart is hammering in his chest and his neck and forehead are coated in a thin sheen of sweat. As he looks about his surroundings, he's having a hard time remembering where he is or where he's supposed to be. The fear grips him tightly, a cold fist around his heart, and all he can do is try to even out his breathing and remind himself that the nightmare is over. He's been saved.
By the time he realizes he is where he's supposed to be, his panic gasping and sitting bolt upright have roused Matty from his slumber. The dear doesn't say anything though, just reaches up and touches Leander in that gentle, loving, affirming way he has that roots Leander to this time and place. Slowly, the cold fist around his heart uncoils its fingers and releases its grasp. Leander can breathe again, and he exhales a sigh, shifting down in the bed to rest his head against the other man's chest.
Leander drapes his arm over Matty, humming his appreciation at the continued stroking of the other man's fingers lazily down his spine. He presses himself closer, pushes plush lips pressed into a kiss against the skin of his lover's shoulder and looks up at him with those puppy-dog eyes so full of admiration. "I didn't mean to wake you." He says, his voice hardly above the quietest whisper, like saying anything aloud might pop the precarious bubble they've found themselves in.

On the latest episode of gracie thinks she’s an rph i’ve created a MASTERLIST OF LATINE FIRST NAMES. This is just my preference but i like naming my characters something based in reality so these are pulled from my high school yearbook (i live in a majority hispanic city) so it’s less about origins and more about what hispanic parents were naming their kids during 1996-2000 and honestly the baseline is really if it sounds nice with spanish vowels it goes.

Leander had been told how beautiful and charming and brilliant and perfect he was his whole entire life, but those words never hit the way they did when Mateo said them. No one had ever looked at Leander the way Mateo had, either, and that was saying something because he’d been being ogled since before he even emerged from the womb. Mateo, simply put, was something special, so, yeah, Leander fed into the shit. He ate it up with two spoons and greedily asked for more. He said, with his mouth, for Mateo not to love him, but every other action screamed for it, begged for it, and encouraged it; every single action reciprocated that affection and adoration until it reached the snapping point.
Things with Matty had gone much, much further than Leander had ever allowed himself before. He knew he was in love, knew that this was going to break his heart maybe just as much as Mateos, but that the latter would likely never realize it. Someone had to be cold and detached, and who better to emulate than Nadja? Nadja who had sat Leander down with receipts about his lover, their time together. Time to end this, malysh. He had had no choice, not really.
The easiest thing to do was ignore the text messages and calls, but Mateo was nothing if not insistent. His sister told him to just block the guy, but that was crueler than Mateo deserved, and part of Leander sort of hoped the other guy would show up just so Lee would have the opportunity to look at him one more time before the final goodbye. At least now he could go back to London for good, or some other big city. He’d learned a lesson, though. He would never allow himself to get close like this again.
With Mateo in the room with him, though, it wasn’t playing out the way he had imagined in his head; the way he had dreamed. In those dreams, he would throw himself at Mateo and they would maybe have a good cry, but they’d figure it out, find a way to endure with each other or run away somewhere where Leander’s family and legacy didn’t matter. But this wasn’t a dream or a movie, it was his tragic life, and he knew the rules all too well. So, he put that mask on and fastened it tight, focusing on the pain of its weight rather than the well of it in his chest. The cruelty was copy/pasted directly from his mother, his back rigid and his expression inscrutable as if he truly was feeling nothing but mild disdain and irritation for the current situation.
While his resolve was as strong as it could be with his lover standing there in shambles, Leander still feared that Mateo could see right through him. Matty had understood him, almost from the jump, more than any other person had. He had looked at Leander and really seen him, not giving a shit about the carefully constructed persona he wore like a person-suit in public but the real, messy, sometimes dramatic, often bratty Leander Dimitry Lagos. Lee was positive that if Matty got close enough, he’d see under the mask. He’d look into Leander’s eyes hard enough to see the hurt and the anguish, the guilt and obligation, and then maybe Lee would crack. But he hadn’t worked out what he would do from there, was too desperately holding onto the need to stand firm all while trembling like an off-balance washing machine.
“Stop.” Leander insisted, eyes closing as he held a hand up, palm out, toward Mateo. His heart was hammering away in his chest, an engine with misfiring pistons, and he could hardly bear it, wasn’t certain he could hear this again about how Matty had fallen for him instantly. It had warmed him so many times before, but now it was just another painful reminder that Leander wasn’t allowed the things he wanted. “You knew what this was.” He repeated weakly and pathetically, his shoulders slumping slightly. He had warned Mateo, and yet here they were, battling back and forth over something they both should have seen coming and prepared for. “You thought you could change me, and that was wishful thinking!” Mateo’s insistence that Leander didn’t have to say it, that Matty knew it all the same, only cracked the blond further. He inhaled deeply, nostrils flaring with the effort of it, and grabbed at his robe, like pulling it tighter on his chest would not only cover him physically but might also hide the horrors in his soul. He couldn’t even bring himself to hold Mateo’s gaze because he knew the other man was right. He hadn’t allowed himself the privilege of saying how he felt about Mateo, but he couldn’t stop himself from showing it. They’d both been doomed.
The worst part about the whole encounter was that Mateo, as usual, was unashamed of wholly being himself — of bearing his own soul and letting his pain leak out of him. He bled it out on the floor, forcing Leander to watch as he eviscerated the guy. It was fucking brutal, but Leander deserved it, he knew, so he didn’t try to stop it, as uncomfortable as it made him feel. What he really wanted was to close the gap between them, step right up to Mateo and wrap his arms around the other man, hold him and tell him he’d give him what he could if Matty would only keep loving him, but he couldn’t. There were expectations, ultimatums, and, at the end of the day, his sweet Mateo deserved so much more than Lee would ever be capable of giving him.
All at once, the irritation and anger and frustration boiled up inside of Leander as Mateo continued to fail to see the problems that lay in front of them like the worst possible landmine. It was either cut their losses now or get blown to smithereens. Leander didn’t want that for Mateo, would rather cut off an ear to save the whole face. “Because there’s no fight!” He practically yelled, coming a little closer to Mateo now as all those negative feelings showed themselves in the rigidity of his body. “No one’s going to give a damn that you love me, that you’re willing to fight for me, they’re still not going to let it happen! You don’t understand or respect the rules. You have that right, that privilege. You can shirk any and all responsibilities, break laws, do what you want. But. I. Can’t.” Each word was punctuated with a tap – not hard, just enough to make the point – to the other mans chest. “Your love, as wonderful as it is, can’t fucking save me. Can’t save this.” He sighed then, exasperated, as his arms dropped uselessly by his side, his head shaking left to right as the mask cracked for just a second, Leander letting all that sadness he was feeling show on his pretty face for just a second. Just a second.
Marry her and keep me in the wings. It’s enough for me, I promise. I’ll behave, I’ll do anything you want. Just, please, don’t leave.
Leander inhaled sharply and looked away immediately, like one more millisecond of lingering eyes on Mateo and his retinas would’ve burned out. He shook his head again, slowly at first then more firmly, his back to Matty as silent tears streamed down his face. He wasn’t going to let Mateo see that, or hear it, for that matter. He was quite good at hiding it by now. “No.” He said simply, swallowing thickly as he busied himself with straightening a book that was sitting on an end table. “That’s pathetic, Mateo; beneath you, and a poor reflection of my character if I allowed it. It has to end.”
Without looking still, just turning his head slightly so he could almost see Mateo out of his peripherals, Leander knew the man was crying, knew it was his fault, and felt his heart twist painfully in his chest again. It was sloughing off pieces like petals off a dying rose, and Leander was terrified of what would happen when there was nothing left. He listened to the ultimatum, what Mateo needed, and took a shaking breath, lifting his hands to his face under the guise of pinching the bridge of his nose, smoothing out whatever he was feeling when really all he needed to do was wipe away the moisture. He composed himself, as a good little public figure is wont to do, then turned around to look at Mateo, to give him what he could.
“It’s over, Mateo. I can’t love you. I can’t life a live with you by my side.” He bit his tongue then, let it roll around his mouth uselessly as more tears threatened to fall. He wouldn’t let them. “I need you to leave, Mateo. You can’t be here, we can’t see each other again. I enjoyed our time together, and I’ll think back on it fondly. I’m sorry it had to end this way.” He paused, stood a little taller. “Don’t make me call security.” He was physically incapable of telling Mateo that he didn’t love him, that what Matty was offering wasn’t everything he wanted, so he didn’t. If that meant Matty chased him some more, well, he’d deal with that when it came.
There weren’t many things in life that Mateo was sure of. He wasn’t exactly a smart person, having not even finished high school (though his grades hadn’t ever been good anyway). Then there was the matter of choosing to lead with his heart instead of his head at every opportunity. He had been called naïve, immature, reckless, and foolish on numerous occasions. His aunt in particular hadn’t ever held her tongue when it came to him. When they lived together, she regularly called him stupid and chastised his choices. If she could see him now, she’d be laughing, surely. And this time Mateo wouldn’t even argue otherwise. He felt stupid for ever having gotten involved with Leander. He felt stupid for thinking he’d be able to fix it just by showing up here. And he felt extra fucking stupid for loving so freely, so earnestly when Leander had warned him not to. If he could go back in time, he’d tell himself to reign it in. There was no stopping that instantaneous love, no, but it was possible to leave it at that. Leander could have just been a once in a lifetime encounter that left Mateo wondering ‘what-if’ instead of all this mess. HA, interesting to think about but in actuality that was always how it would play out, at least from Matty’s side. In any timeline, any universe, he would be weak for Leander Lagos and unable to fight the overwhelming, all-consuming love he felt for him. It was a constant, he had no doubt in his mind about that. He hadn’t stood a chance. The fucking fool.
If the blame had to rest on anyone’s shoulders, surely it was Leander. Mateo had told him that he fucked up and fell right off the bat. Yet Lee still fooled around with him, let the love grow and cover them both in warmth even though he had no intention of ever claiming it. He’d taken his fill, drank it all in until he was satisfied then tossed the scraps back to Mateo without turning back. No goodbye. No apology. No regret. And that was hard to understand. Why do it this way?
It was impossible to gauge what was going on inside his head. Matty tried to figure it out, his eyes locked on to his former lover fiercely. The lightness that he’d let Mateo see was nowhere to be found. No sign of affection or adoration. No remorse. He was unflappable as he stood there and shattered Mateo into a million pieces, not flinching as the shards hit the ground. They bounced off the floor and slashed at Mateo’s skin, forcing him to bleed out in front of Leander. Who still didn’t fucking care.
He had to, though, surely he did. They had known each other so intimately, fused in bodies and minds. Leander tried to put that wall up but they both knew Mateo slipped in through the cracks – because Lee had let him. They were friends, confidantes to one another, sharing in this big secret that threatened to destroy Leander’s life. Mateo gave pieces of his ugliness to Leander in return, to ensure the beautiful one that he had secrets too and he would guard Lee’s with his life. If all they had was love behind closed doors then so be it. He would have happily spent his life content with whatever crumbs Leander gave him. To lose all of it so abruptly… He would never roll over and accept it. He owed it to both of them to fight tooth and nail to preserve some semblance of their love. It didn’t matter what it looked like, just that it was there.
“You did. I understood what this was. But it didn’t matter. I loved you before you told me all that. And I was satisfied to hold you in whatever capacity you allowed me to. So what if it wasn’t what I wanted? It was enough, Lee. Any piece of you would be enough for me.” The vibrancy that Mateo was usually bursting with was dying in real time. With every word Leander spoke, Mateo dimmed, the color washing right out. Emotions were seizing him, dictating what he said before he could really think it through. Typical. ‘I never said that I loved you.’ It was true, he hadn’t. But hearing it so bluntly made Mateo’s breath catch painfully at the back of his throat as if it had landed in a sharp, rusted bear trap. Each breath that came out after was strangled, pained, and it reflected in his voice. “You never had to say it in words, Lee. I could feel it. I could feel you loving me right back, even when you tried to stop. That wasn’t wishful thinking on my part.” He hadn’t really expected it to happen for him because it never did. Leander was different, everything about him was wholly new and exciting and terrifying. Of course he’d been the only one to love Mateo back – but he didn’t accept it or give it in any real, tangible way. Mateo would give anything for these walls to crumble down and finally grant him the love he so desperately craved, the love that was right in front of him.
The pain continued to swell, reaching new peaks every time Mateo was sure it couldn’t possibly feel worse. He didn’t try to hide it, wasn’t sure he could if he wanted to. His turmoil was carved into every feature. Did Leander feel anything as he drove the blade in deeper? Mateo yearned to feel him, to hold him in his arms as he had so many times before it all went to shit. If he could grab hold he’d never let go and they would figure this out. But Leander put up a physical wall too.
That laugh sounded like it came from a different character. Leander had been replaced and instead of the man Mateo had fallen for, a stranger wore his face. Someone that could be cruel and cold without hesitation. His face twisted and he had to look away, else he wouldn’t have been able to swallow his tears down. Breathe, you’re not done here. Not yet, he told himself. “Why is that a funny concept? Why wouldn’t I fight for you? I love you, Leander, with all that I have. We have something special here and you know it. You have to.” His eyes were pleading as they settled on Leander again, wet and shining. “I want you to be honest with me. Stop treating me like I’m nothing, please. Look… marry her and keep me in the wings. It’s enough for me, I promise. I’ll behave, I’ll do anything you want. Just please don’t leave.” It was pathetic, he could hear it himself. Reduced to begging to be Leander’s scraps that he’d never fully claim. It was sick that he held no regard for his own feelings in this. Mateo was nothing and no one and he would be okay with that because he didn’t feel like nothing when Lee touched him. Those stolen moments would be enough to keep him going. It had been enough thus far, after all.
His eyes had filled to capacity, the tears seeping over the edges and streaking his cheeks. He didn’t swipe them away. “If this is really over, I need you to tell me to my fucking face that you don’t feel anything. Tell me you don’t love me. Tell me I’m beneath you. Tell me you could never live life with me by your side. Tell me that what I have to offer isn’t enough. Otherwise I won’t let you go. I’ll keep throwing myself at you on the off chance you let me back in. I love you more than I’ve loved anything. If you're going to break my heart, break it properly. Don't be a coward about it.”

"You could be meaner..." The blond replied, perfect eyebrow arching over his Bambi eyes. Leander's breath caught in his throat as Mateo leaned over him, he loved this — the thrill of it all, but especially being treated this way by a man like him. "Then why are you giving it to me?" He asked, blinking slowly with heavy lashes — as if it were that simple. Still, his hands were all over Mateo, keeping him close, breathing him in. Leander leaned up, brushing his plush lips against the other man's. "Why don't you give me what I do deserve, then?"
"Honestly, I think I just get hard thinking about how I'm the only one who gets to be so mean to you, Leander." Mateo smirked as he leaned over the younger man. "If only they all knew how fucking you pathetic you can be." he hummed, letting their eyes lock. "You don't even deserve my attention right now, hermoso." @thefvrious

Leander grew up knowing he was important but feeling it in a way that didn’t register his value as a human being, rather a commodity... something that belonged to the Lagos name. With Matty, he knows he’s important in a way that he’s never been before. He means something to Mateo, means everything to Mateo, really, all the shit the other man has been through in the name of his love for Leander. Lee doesn’t deserve it, and he knows it. But he wants it so desperately. And, more than that, he needs it.
Sighing, he blinks up at Mateo, his brow furrowing just slightly. This man will break every bone in his body to make sure his lover is comfortable, and Leander doesn’t know how he’ll ever earn the love and care and affection he’s receiving. It overwhelms him in the moment, makes him slide an arm up and under Mateo, a leg wrapping around Matty’s, so that he can hold onto the other man with most of his limbs, like rooting them both to this spot, like keeping Mateo forever and ever.
“No... no. I just... I got confused, that’s all.” He confesses, and it’s true. Already, his heart is mellowing out, his ear pressed to Mateo’s chest so that he can hear the beating of the other man’s. His own organ falls into sync, his eyes closing briefly before he’s pressing kisses on every inch of exposed flesh he can find. “Can you stay awake with me for a little while? Just until sleep finds me again...” He asks, lifting his head to look down at Mateo’s handsome, sleepy face in the relative darkness. There’s enough light seeping in through a crack in the curtains so that Leander can make out the finer features. He leans down to kiss the man on the mouth, exerting a bit more passion than is strictly necessary, but he could maybe use the distraction.
Mateo lacks conventional knowledge due to dropping out of school so many years ago but he thinks he makes up for it with emotional intelligence. He's observant and nurturing, especially with those he loves, and there is no one that Matty loves more than Leander. He's been learning his lover over their time together and by now he has a pretty good hold on how the blond thinks, how he feels and how he deals with said feelings. He does all that he can to soothe and support, with no desire to ever stop.
Case in point, Leander waking him up doesn't register as an annoyance in any way. He knows as soon as he's brought to consciousness that Lee is going through it. He's been through so much, the poor dear, so naturally it's going to take some time before he really gets comfortable with how things are now. Mateo's eyes don't immediately open, he just instinctively reaches for Leander and touches him as gently as he can. A reminder that Leander isn't alone anymore, they're together and always will be.
It's only when Leander settles on Mateo's chest that he finally opens his eyes to take in the other's form in the darkness. He smiles lazily, his fingers pressing a little harder into Lee's skin. "I know you didn't, baby. It's okay, I'll wake up every single night with you and it won't ever bother me. It's a fucking gift to spend my nights and mornings with you, shit like this is more than worth it. 'Sides, you're still adjusting, right? It'd be weird if you were, like, totally fine with everything that happened." He's not usually this wordy right when he wakes up. It's one of many exceptions where Leander was concerned. "Anything you wanna talk about? Anything I can do?"
