Thinking abt Leander and if everyone knows he’s from Hightown? Like does everyone know he was potentially born from wealth? How does that translate with the public’s opinion? Does he hide that fact for more reliablility? How would he blend in?

Like imagine- a person from lowtown, references a piece of slang that’s only local, before his arrival 12 odd years ago, and he doesn’t get it/isn’t familiar with it? I know he’d probably play it off phenomenally, but the brief moment of him not knowing….what does he think or do? Or if the people’s accent/vernacular is slightly different, does he code-switch? Does he fake/adopt a dialect that isn’t his own; hide pronunciations or colloquialisms from his Hightown upbringing? Or does he own it and simply say he’s seen the error of his ways and that they are unjust?

Euris, Mycroft, and Sherlock (BBC's Sherlock). Euris would then later bear a child with a descendent of Moriarty. Resulting in Ron Kamonohashi.

Mycroft has a smaller branch. Three children:

Andrew Holmes, Violet Holmes, and Isabella Holmes.

Violet Holmes would then have a child later with James Bond, resulting in Clive Reston.

Shirly Holmes would marry Charles Jones. Resulting in the birth of Fetlock Jones and Laura Jones.

Laura Jones and her husband Lord Hamish Croft establish the lineage that would come to result in Laura Croft.

Fetlock's is Jupiter, and his daughter Charlotte marries Peerless Jones.

The following children of Peerless and Charlotte are: Barnaby, Darwin, and David.

Sebastian marries a woman named Peg: Through them they have a son named Robert who becomes an ambassador for the United Kingdom.

Rutherford is Sherlock's twin brother and a vampire (making him a genetic dead end).

I wasn't sure how to fit Enola Holme because, as far as I know,w she doesn't go on to have anyone I can identify as being a possible descendent. (good for her.)

Lastly, Charlotte Holmes. I also believe that Charlotte was having an affair with Mary Watson, but that is neither here nor there. She marries some fuck-off prince named Rupert of Kravonia and they have a son: Alexander (i accidentally named him Rupert as well in the image).

Sirgrina and John Vanstattart Smith have three Children:

Dennis Nayland Smith, Violet Smith, and John Smith.

Dennis Nayland fathers: George, Harold, and John "Hannibal" Smith.

I FINALLY got around to rereading the Charlotte Holmes books, one of my absolute favorite series that I just happen to...not talk about. Not here and not on my booksta.

So. In the spirit of blogging more, why not chat here!!

Firstly, this will be a later updated post because I've only reread books 1-2 and will tackle 3-4 later this year. Also, I first read these books before my frontal lobe developed and that's...is it weird that I miss the girl I was before 2019???

Anyway, my first read was strictly audio and my reread is a hybrid with heavy emphasis on audio.

A STUDY IN CHARLOTTE

Rating then, 4 stars (because Goodreads is half star-phobic)

Rating now, 4.25/4.5 stars (I can't really decide, also I decided not to change my ratings on Storygraph because I don't want to change every single rating I make for every book I reread.)

I love Jamie and Charlotte now as I loved them then. Back when I was closer to their age, Jamie was 100% my choice of book boyfriend in a world where I loved many book boy characters but didn't consider them 'book boyfriends' lol.

But I missed being in Jamie's head, how melodramatic he can be, funny without ever trying to be, his relationship with Holmes, being just as annoyed with his father as he is (I can't remember at the moment if I ever grew to like James Sr. in the end..)

THE LAST OF AUGUST

Rating then, 4 enthusiastic stars + a review that commented on how I couldn't understand why the 2nd book was the lowest rated one in the series

Rating now, 4 less enthusiastic, more so jaded stars (plus, if the book ended around chapter 7 we'd be looking at 3.5 stars.)

Maybe we chalk this up to age, but this book was a lot more angsty than I remember?? Or maybe I just didn't care back then and I because I care now, I notice it. Also, I was less confused about story events than I was the first round. So yay for reading comprehension.

3 very important take aways from the reading that I want to note here.

This book's title is SO on the nose and why did it take me 5 years later to put that together?! HELP--

The Holmes Family Needs Therapy. Or to be taken out. Or both??? Or either??? As the feelings of overall annoyance linger following my reread, I believe this book was written in a way to drive home the point of just how in over their heads Emma, and Leander, and Charlotte, and Milo are, especially concerning the rather stupid war between the Holmes and Moriartys. Everyone's batshit, just saying Charlotte made a grave mistake, young girl or not, and it was August who paid the price twice. Like...damn. He tries to warn Jamie and August is the one who dies. Damn.

However I feel about Charlotte and Holmes unequally yoked, toxic friendship with romantic overtures now (back then I was eating this shit up, and now I'm like....I'm too old to ship this with the extreme fever I did?????) the Charlotte POV chapters got me again. Probably like they did the first time I read this book. Some quotes down below??

Page 252, Charlotte berating Tom for his transgressions of book 1:

"You're disloyal," I told Tom. "You proved that with Mr. Wheatley. I swear to you that if you ever give up sensitive information again--if you ever betray Watson again--I will find a way to wear you as a hot. Stop looking at my screen."

Page 257, Charlotte expressing her love for Jamie without ever saying she loves him or that she's in love with him:

We spend so much time in Jamie's head, with his thoughts, and how he internalizes information, events, etc. and there's no doubt that he's in love with his best friend, but the symmetry of seeing some of those feelings reflected back is something I can't ignore. And I'm not going to.

Anyway, I think I might join the masses in book 2 being my least favorite. I'll confirm after I read books 3 and 4, but it seems that's the direction we're going in.

Leander had just gotten off his work shift at the amusement park and was practically starving because he had skipped breakfast that morning and it was now well past lunch time. Walking with intent, he made his way to one of his favorite food stands inside the park and ordered a large chocolate milkshake and some really salty french fries. Once he obtained his lunch, which was really more of just a snack, Leander glanced around the immediate area and spotted a familiar face sitting at one of the picnic tables. He meandered over and, with a grin, he began to speak. “Hey,” He called out as he began to sit next to them. “You should try and dip some of these fries into my shake with me,” He proposed in suggestion. “I know you’ll like it because I have evolved taste buds,” He lied in explanation, hoping that the other would catch on that he was simply joking around. “I’m practically a superhero. I could save the world if I wanted to,” Leander chuckled, shaking his head. “But, no, seriously, if you try it and really don’t like it, then I’ll do whatever you want as payback.”

I read the first book back in 2017 or 2018 and I finally, finally picked this up on audiobook. I have been wanting to finish this series, but I always find other books to read. I really enjoy Holmes and Watson and their relationship and how it is becoming more. I think Charlotte is brilliant on how she deals with the mysteries. I did find this not as great as the first book and I wanted more of the mystery instead of Holmes and Watson pining. I will still read the next installment.

So, I Read the Last of August

Can a Holmes and a Watson ever have a normal winter vacation? Impossible.

This young adult mystery takes place after the semester of the first book ends. Holmes and Watson planned to spend the winter vacation together at each of their homes, but once they arrive at the Holmes residence, things begin to fall apart. As Jamie faces a glimpse of Charlotte’s home life, her uncle Leander disappears, so they head to Berlin to find him.

What to Adopt:

This story had a love triangle, but it was much more subtle than the usual execution. For Charlotte, there was her current best friend, Jamie Watson, who she was fighting with for most of the novel and her past crush, August Moriarty, who doesn’t really have a future. Most interesting is that Charlotte is too concerned with the mystery to consider either of them, yet the triangle still does its job in causing tension.

What to Consider:

Throughout the story, Jamie and Holmes’ relationship goes through up and downs as they try to navigate the fallout of the previous novel. I liked the continuity, but for all the scenes spent on it, nothing was resolved.

I also want to talk about character agency in climactic moments. Unsurprising given the title, but it is unlikely that August will be returning for the rest of the series. What is disappointing about this is that it was not his choice and is glossed over because of all the other events that occur around it. There’s an argument that not everything must be neatly tied up, and perhaps it will be touched on in the following book. However, as he was the book’s focus, the severance was abrupt.
