Kitchen miracle
Leah Williamson x dutch!reader
Tumblr media
“Leah, get your ass in the kitchen.” her head shoots up from her phone almost immediately. What the hell has she done this time, are her thoughts. After cautiously entering the kitchen she realises what has slipped her mind. She tried to make you breakfast but then her mum called her in the morning and she kinda forgot. So she stares at the slight mess she had made. Flour on the counter, egg shells left and right to a completely doughy mixture covered apron. A bad cook to say the least. But it's the gesture that counted. “I’m sorry my love, I totally forgot, my mum called a-” “Le what were you doing?” “Uhm tried to make you some breakfast.” It doesn't sound like a statement rather a question. “Babe, I can't be mad at you, you're too sweet for your own good.” You walk towards your girlfriend and envelope her in a tight hug. “I love you Le” with a bashful grin Leah returns the declaration. “I love you too.” After standing in each other's arms for a few minutes just enjoying the warmth of your partner, Leah speaks up, “Could you please show me how to make your favourite breakfast?”
Your head turns downwards to look into her eyes. “Of course i can, let's get to it shall we but first we should clean up this chaos love.” a giggle leaves your lips while Leah shamefully looks away. With your fingers on her chin you turn her head. “Baby there is nothing to be ashamed of.” and with leaving her time to respond you kiss her. A few moments go by, you pull away, Leah chasing your lips, unsuccessfully as you're taller than her, and you bite your lower lip as Leah’s actions are melting your heart.
So while you are searching for the perfect playlist to start baking in the meantime Leah begins cleaning. Kitchen peace is restored pretty quickly with two people working together ideally. “Okay now I'm going to weigh everything and you take out the Pannenkoeken pan cause we are making Pannenkoekeeeeeen.” “We are making what?” “Babe you know pancakes, right?” “Of course I know what pancakes are but what in the world are Pannenkoeken?” You are amused by her confusion, her furrowed brow looks quite adorable. “It's similar to pancakes, don't question me, rather help cause I’m the one who could make something tasty.” Leah’s hand shoots to her chest acting offended but you both know she is joking.
“Step one is to mix all the dry ingredients together which means flour, salt, cinnamon and vanilla sugar.” Your girlfriend carefully combines these, eager to continue. “Now for the next step I like to whisk the eggs in a separate bowl beforehand so it's well distributed when added to the flour.” You grab an extra bowl and hand it to the defender. She does as she's told and then pours them into the dry mixture. “Well done babe. Now follows milk and a tiny bit of melted butter. And e voila.” Leah stares at you dumbfounded, “Wait that's it, we are done?” “Yeah see its pretty easy when you get the hang of it darling.” She is amazed. “But you still have to do the actual Pannenkoeken now that the ‘dough’ is ready to go.”
“I pre-heated the pan a bit for you, just have to put some butter on it and scoop the batter into the pan. Rotate the pan and wait. When the beige colour turns into a more yellowish one you flip it. Got it?” “Yeah I think I got it.” As you suspect she does it excellently. Leah gets more comfortable making them with each Pannenkoeken. While she is in her element, surprisingly, you search the cabinets for something to eat them with. Cutting up some fruit, getting out the Nutella, jam and honey plus walnuts you are all set. Two dishes are already on the counter stacked with a few Pannenkoeken. You can't believe your eyes as you turn around and find your girlfriend flipping one in the air. Luckily she catches it, serving it on your plate.
Both of you sit down on the dining table, diving in. “That was really fun my love, we should do that more often.” states Leah. A grin on your face and a satisfied stomach make you nod. “Definitely, you did an amazing job. Maybe I’ll make a chef out of you after all.” You both burst out laughing. “Good one baby, good one.”

Trip to Mushroom Land 16
After a well deserved rest in the charming village of Boletus Pulverulantli, we decided to pursue our voyage… in a fun way. As the name of the village suggest, the bolets growing here produce a surabondance of spores. So much in fac you can glide all the way down!
Voila, we've reached the end of my tale. Did you enjoyed it ? Tell me, and I'll will make more. For now, let's explore new territories!
/* Pencil doodle on A6 sketchbook - Porte-mine sur carnet A6 */ This is a part of the Travel log of Fungi Haven

I like how this version had scenes at the beginning that weren't in 1998 nor in the 2000 versions and that they showed how the prison (idk what the correct term is in English) changed Valjean - so it felt "new" to watch this version, which is nice, but I feel that because they spent so much time on it, the Paris part felt a bit rushed
I like they kind of did the whole "Valjean jumped into the water twice to save himself and survived VS Javert jumped and died"
It felt very British. Javert in Toulon also felt very British
I did enjoy this Javert (although I'd prefer if his obsession was toned down) and I like how the actor visibly trembled in several scenes when he was distraught (I still like Malkovich!Javert the most tho I honestly don't think it's gonna change, but I like Perkins!Javert's looks with his bangs and side whiskers)
I'm still waiting to find "my Valjean" tho
Unfortunately, I didn't feel like the ending had much impact. Javert just jumped after being saved and voila a wedding yay (I guess it's better than Valjean skipping away grinning). And the final confrontation between Valjean and Javert felt underwhelming to me :(
It's interesting that the English versions (this and 1998) don't want to end the story with Valjean's death. They also both ignore Éponine and the Thénardiers in Paris.
my personal ranking:
Les Misérables (2000) - France
Les Misérables: Owarinaki tabiji (2019) - Japan
Les Misérables (1978) - UK
Les Misérables (1998) - US/UK
(I enjoyed all of them. All of them are enjoyable entertainment on their own.)

Cheesy Bacon Pasta
Bonjour les beautés~
I hope you enjoy this recipe, please tell me how yours turned out in the comment section below!
Merci!
What you need;
1 1/2 cup Pasta (any kind will work, be as creative as you please!)
4 tbsp Butter
4 cups Cheddar Cheese (You can also use white cheddar)
2 cups Milk or Half/Half
1 cup Cooked Bacon
3 Tbsp All-Purpose Flour
1 Tsp Granulated Garlic
1 Tsp Dried Parsley
Salt and Pepper to taste
Directions;
Boil pasta according to directions on the package in lightly salted water.
Melt the butter in a pan over med heat, stir in parsley and garlic.
Once melted, stir in the flour and cook until golden. Which should be around 6-7 minutes, but keep stirring so it doesn't burn.
As you are stirring, slowly add in the milk and boil until smooth and bubbly, add salt and pepper.
Stir in cheese and bacon, cook until completely melted and gooey.
Add pasta, stir until coated.
And voila! You have perfect cheesy bacon pasta!

4/20/24: Pastries tasted to date… Ok, that basically means that eating pastry has been one of our top priorities since we got here 5 days ago. Bien sur, some of my middle and high school French is coming back to me, dans mon 🧠, mais je ne parle Francais avec ma bouche… I can read and get the gist of the words, I can listen and understand the gist of the words, but speaking aloud is just a mental block for me. I just freeze and go blank. Meanwhile, Claude learned some French from his Japanese mom some 40+ years ago, and he is better than I am at ordering lunch! Maybe when I come back and live here for 6 months, I will have a break-through… 👀
We heard good news about Oreo yesterday, and my son is taking great care of mom, so all is holding steady on the home front, knock wood…😬
Today, we walked through several street markets of fresh flowers, spices, as well as fruit and produce. We have passed through a different street market pretty much every day, in one spot or another here in Aix. We have enjoyed buying boxes of gorgeous shiny fraises 🍓and framboises to eat while we walk around and around this town… At my request, we are trying another Thing on this sabbatical…I always liked the idea of traveling and staying put in one place rather than moving every few days or so—the idea is to feel like I am getting to know “my neighborhood.” I thought it could make us feel more like we’re living here than if we popped around hotel to hotel. We are only 3 weeks, so it’s LIKE we are living here, but without having to actually figure out too many real life things except Where and What to Eat. But also Where to Go for Groceries, and whether I can actually buy French Onion Dip here (not that I can see!). BUT part of “kind of like” living here is also cooking at home, so I was on a mission at the street market today.
Here’s how it went: We were people-watching this morning as we ate our croissant and cinnamon roll at a tiny cafe table outside at Weibel Patisserie (a pretty famous place I’m told). We each sipped a “cafe luong” (deux, actually—I guess I drink strong black coffee now. Bzzzzz), while we sat practically in the street (trucks and older ladie’s roller grocery bags were millimeters apart and nobody but us gasped!). It’s Saturday (Samedi), and everyone was holding their big shopping baskets or trailing their rollie bags behind them. Older couples seemed to be out shopping together, sharing the load, and EVERYONE had giant LEEKS sticking out of their bags!! Perhaps there was a sale at the street market, or perhaps Leeks are very French, which I did not really know. But now I wanted to achèter les poireaux…I wanted to buy the leeks! Claude unwittingly threw down a challenge, noting that he has always LOVED Potato/Leek soup…I’m not sure he believed I could/would actually follow through, but I grabbed the leeks, potato, et bien sur, l’herbes de Provence!!! We stopped at the Casino supermarchè for chicken broth (another item Not to Be Found in two grocery stores we checked, only vegetale ou bouillon…what is that about??). We got home and Claude went off to read on the back patio in the sun ☀️ while I cooked up Le Soup De Jour: Potato et Poireaux…Voila, Je suis une chef Francaise!!! (Yeah No). I even made a cooking video (not my first if you must know! Just NOT widely distributed due to their silliness). You can find it posted…NOWHERE 😝
We will see how this whole “hanging out in one place” works out…It’s only been 5 days, and I feel like I have already found my favorite Palmier. I’ve also been to the snazzy automated Nespresso store several times (I get it, Europe! I really doo!) So much more to master, though, and tomorrow is a travel day. We are actually getting up early to drive to an antique market about an hour away, in Isle Sur La Sourgue. Et maintenant, and now, Claude is cooking at home! Reheating my soup de jour and making his famous salad dressing for a salade avec our last few slices of délicieux jambon 🥗 🍖 Bon soir!! ❤️ 🌙

Good evening TUMBLR - March 9th - 2024
''Mr. Plant has owed me a shoe since July 5, 1971."
Ch. XII.6 - Morocco - 1989 - 1991
TAGINE AUTOROUTE The Morocco of 1990-91 was still a fairly backward country. In large cities like Casablanca people lived a Western-style life, while it was enough to leave that context to return to agro-pastoral Morocco, where many - unfortunately - struggled to combine lunch with dinner. One day I was at a sort of motorway service station, along the state road between Agadir and the construction site. I asked what was for lunch, and ordered a tagine de boeuf and a coke – then sat at one of the outdoor tables. Near me, other customers, drivers, tourists etc. A few minutes later I was served a generous tagine, in the characteristic pyramid-shaped bowl. I started to eat, but the coke didn't arrive, so I went back into the restaurant to ask for it.
Voila 'la Coka' messio'… and I went back out to my table but………a Moroccan wearing with jallaba and hood on his head calmly was eating my tagine!!  S'mitek ……Ecoute……celui la' c'est mon tagine….(Listen that is my tagine)  ''Oui c'est vrai…mais tu est partie…donc je croyez que tu a termina'… tiens je le rend…(Yes but you left so I thought you finish to eat .....waiti I give it back to you ) he said, pushing the tagine towards me.  No no no… merci…. tiens-le …….je vais commander un autre… (No thanks I will ask for another one)  Alors mercie …. and he immediately started eating again So I ordered another tagine, but the thing wasn't finished yet. It is customary in the Sousse region - given the abundance - that during the winter season big oranges are offered in restaurants and taverns, even if the customer has not ordered them. At the end of the lunch, 4 of these oranges were brought to me – while I was weighing them with my eyes, my host approached and said:  Four oranges are too many for you only! And taking two, with a nod of his head, he left. Well the consideration I made was that that day I had voluntarily helped an individual who could not afford to eat - which in itself is a very sad thing in this world of great waste and social injustice.
A STEAK IN AIT MELLOUL Sometimes we were too busy to return home for lunch. In one of those occasions, Mr Alfonzo invited me to for a short lunch break with him – we decided to go to Ait Melloul, a rural municipality a few kilometers from the site. At the time it was customary - and I believe it still is in some areas of Morocco - to buy meat at a butcher's stand, and than have it cooked by a ''BBQ'' right next to the butcher's. To eatour steak, we sat at the tables of improvised bars on the side walk, where soft drinks and green tea were served. We carefully chose the four slices of meat, entrusted them to the cook, and sat at the table waiting for the steaks to be cooked. Meanwhile the crowd at the Souk el Arba (Thursday market) passed between the tables scattered on the side walk. It was the kind of crowd that tourist brochures define as ''picturesque''. Rather, we could recognize the difficulties and sometimes the desperation in the eyes of many, too many - there were ''fellah'' (agricultural labourers), farmers, water sellers, people who brought all sorts of animals, vegetables and fruit to the market, in an attempt to make ends meet. After a 15 min Mr. Alfonzo and I were sitting and enjoying the tasty steaks, unaware that someone was watching us, contemplating ''the coup of the day''. The guy had already passed by our table once, but I realized this after he had made the 'coupt'. Suddenly, coming up behind Alfonzo who was biting into one of the two steaks from his plate, as fast as a magpie, the guy grabbed the second steak on the plate with his hand and fled in a flash, eating the meat as he was running!! Alfonzo and I, after three seconds of stand still , began to laugh out loud, almost falling from our respective chairs, while the bystanders were watching at us.
Some of them for sure were thinking:
''Look at these Westerners, they get their lunch stolen from their plate, and instead of getting angry and chasing the thief, they burst out laughing' -I asked Alfonzo if he wanted another steak to replace the stolen one, but he replied that the one he had just finished would be enough for today.

How To Survive Going To Beach Bars At Sentosa - Check These Tips!
Imagine basking in the warm golden sun, feeling the soft sand beneath your toes, and sipping a refreshing cocktail! Plus, enjoy the breathtaking ocean views. Welcome to the island of Sentosa! This picturesque island paradise is well-renowned for its pristine beaches and vibrant beach bars. Not to mention, this is also where you can see Universal Studios, Adventure Cove, iFLY, AJ Hackett Skybridge, and many more. Whether you're a local looking for a weekend getaway or a tourist seeking a tropical escape, Sentosa's beach bars offer a perfect blend of relaxation and excitement.
To ensure you make the most of your beach bar experience at Sentosa, here are ten pro tips to elevate your time spent on the island to new heights.
Tumblr media
1. Plan Your Journey: Before embarking on your beach bar adventure, plan your journey. You can reach the island of Sentosa through various modes of transportation. You can walk, take a bus, or try the monorail from VivoCity. You can also ride a cable car from the HarbourFront Tower Two.
2. Bring Sufficient Cash: While many outdoor bars in Singapore accept card payments, having cash on hand is always wise. Some beach bars may have minimum spending requirements. Others may offer special discounts for cash payments.
3. Stay Hydrated: Spending a day in Singapore can dehydrate you. While beach bars at Sentosa offer a wide range of delicious cocktails and beverages, it's easy to forget to hydrate. Keep a reusable water bottle with you and refill it whenever necessary.
4. Sun Protection is Key: Don't let the sun ruin your beach bar experience! Remember to bring sunscreen with a high SPF, sunglasses, and a hat to shield yourself from harmful UV rays. Enjoy the sun-kissed beach atmosphere without worrying about sunburns or discomfort!
5. Embrace Beachwear: Sentosa's beach bars exude a relaxed and tropical vibe. Embrace the opportunity to wear your favourite beachwear. From colourful sarongs and flip-flops to stylish swimsuits and cover-ups, dress comfortably and confidently to blend in with the beach bar scene.
Tumblr media
6. Arrive Early for Prime Spots: Beach bars at Sentosa can get crowded, especially during weekends and holidays. Arrive early in the day. This way, you'll have the luxury of choosing your desired spot and basking in the beach bar's lively ambience.
7. Try Local Delicacies: Singapore offers a delightful culinary experience. Don't miss the chance to sample local delicacies like satay, laksa, or barbecued seafood! Also, try their chicken rice. Look for hawker centres around the island and indulge in the vibrant flavours of their cuisine while enjoying the breathtaking beachfront views.
8. Engage in Water Sports: Beyond lounging by the outdoor bars in Singapore, you should also try their water sports and activities for adventurous souls. They have jet skis, paddle boards, and even banana boat rides.
9. Capture the Moments: Make your beach bar experience last forever by capturing beautiful moments. Take photographs of the stunning vistas, refreshing drinks, and happy moments with friends and loved ones. Let the pictures serve as cherished mementoes of your time spent in Sentosa's beach bars. Pro-tip! Lie down on a sun lounger, legs up, hold your drink, and voila! You have an Instagram-worthy photo.
10. Explore the Nightlife: Sentosa's beach bars transform into vibrant nightlife hotspots after sunset. Dance to the beats of live music, enjoy beachside barbecues or revel in the company of friends. Stay late to experience the magical ambience from the light shows. The showtimes are at 7:40 and 8:40 PM daily.
With its sun-kissed beaches, captivating beach bars, and unforgettable experiences, Sentosa is the ultimate tropical paradise you should explore. Indulge in the laid-back vibes, refreshing drinks, and breathtaking views outdoor bars in Singapore have to offer. Soak up the sun and unwind with your favourite cocktails at Bikini Bar! A Letter from Orlais
@kauriart has planted far too many ideas in my brain, and now I'm here to curse tumblr with one of them:
Dearest Lady Trevelyan,
Voulez-vous coucher avec moi, ma choupinette? Most likely no, but hear me out. Rumours of your relationship with the most coveted Ser Cullen have made their way to Val Royeaux. With your ample curves and his chiseled body, talk of the ways you must fuck has become the talk of the town.  I'm sure that you and your délicieux beau are well aware of how many among you that memorable night at the winter palace wanted to sink their teeth, among other things, into each of you. Surrounded by the bons vivant of sex and sexuality, you must also know the gossip centered on whose bed you'd each end up in. Imagine finding that the lack of dog lords warming Orlesian beds was to be found in the chambers of one another. Alas, where many saw loss, Mon Amoreux and myself see only opportunity. Wicked dreams of what we'd like to show you have taken hold in our waking minds, so let us make you this offer. We write to you, Lady Trevelyan, in hopes that your Ostwick upbringing will outweigh your prudish Ferelden heritage; For the commander, in this regard, there is little hope.
While your romps are no doubt more than satisfying, I am of the mind that you could both use some release, no? To hear l'appel du vide and leap. As joyous as it can be to attain climax together in a coupling, rare are the moments when two can share the space of being truly undone, as at least one is always still grounded in the work it took to get there. My lover believes as I do, that we can be of much assistance in this regard.  Join us, or let us join you, whichever suits you best. Let us help you to fall apart and come back together as one between us. Let us break you, so that you may glimpse deep into each other's souls, beyond all those stuffy Ferelden walls. Kneel before us, and let us unmake you both.
I wish to fill your noble knight commander in a way I do so hope you are familiar with. I would knead that taught derriere in my hands, open him to me, and have him let go in a way I believe he may only be able to do with his eyes locked onto yours.  As for you, ma poupette, my lover may be a challenge for you to take the first time, our friends call him le Cheval. He would stretch you to your limits, more than you may think possible, but I believe you to be up to any such task. As much as I prefer a well-built man with a firm arse to bury myself in, I do so enjoy watching mon amoreux hilt his impressive cock in a beautiful woman's cunt.  I imagine your Cullen would find a similar joy in watching your face, and you his as you both lose yourself to the wordless bliss.
My lover and I will take our time filling you, watching as you collide between us, nowhere else to run from the pain behind you that is rapidly becoming pleasure as it mingles in your mouths. When we are fully sheathed and you have both writhed through la petite mort long enough that you're no longer sure if you've made it to the afterlife, we will pull you with us over that cliff into oblivion. By the time you remember your names, we will be long retired to our quarters. Together you will come back to life, remade as one.
Et Voila: S'entendre.   Consider it.
Wettest regards,

ok, now this filthy filthy Orlesian man can get out of my head, right?
I felt like such a cringey creeper writing this, so I think that means it's definitely Orlesian enough to go in the jar.
About 'wettest regards,' I'm so sorry Cullen...

La Fayette and Emma Willard at the Opera
When Emma Willard was travelling Europe in 1830, she visited General La Fayette in Paris in late 1830. The two were close friends, had already met before and especially Willard had nothing but the purest admiration for La Fayette. In her book Journal and Letters from France and Great-Britain (1833) she re-printed several letters where she told her sister every last detail of her visit. Her letters are unusually engaging in my opinion, because they are so personal. Old letters and journals can sometimes feel very stiff, very old and completely removed from our modern reality – but hers is so lively, so ordinary that I could not help but relate to her during certain passages. Due to Willard’s hero-worship of La Fayette, I was afraid she would put him on a gigantic pedestal – but she paints a very humane picture of the ageing Marquis, one that is actually rather refreshing.
With all of that being said, here is a passage from Emma’s letter to her sister Almira Hart Lincoln Phelps from December 7, 1830:
I must now tell you, how it was that we spent the evening together. It was at the Opera Francais, usually called the Grand Opera. You will remember that he told me he had not been at a theatre since the revolution, and the first time he did go, he would go with me. One evening before had been appointed, and failed from the illness of one of the performers. It was the evening before last that we finally went [December 5]. I expected that the people would have cheered him as he entered. But he was in a citizen's dress, and went with a determination, as it appeared, not to be known.
The two boxes next, and each side the king's, were for the evening taken by the La Fayette family. There are places in each for six persons, two in front, and three deep. The General, Mrs. S-. of Baltimore, (a particular friend of Madame George La Fayette,) two of the General's grand-daughters, Col. C-, an officer of his household, and myself, filled the box to the left of the king's. Mrs. S— and myself were placed in the front seats, notwithstanding our entreaties that the General would take one of them; two of his grand–daughters had the two next, and the General was quite back where it was impossible for any one below to see him. The first piece was an opera, “Le Dieu et la Bayadère.” In this I saw the performance of M’lle Taglioni, the first dancer in the world. Much of this French opera dancing is what it should not be; but of Taglioni, though expected much, yet her performance perfectly astonished me; and I exclaimed in a pas seul, where she seemed divested of terrestrial gravity, and to fly, rather than dance, “this is the sublime of dancing!"
The scenery of the theatre — the splendor of the dresses and decorations — the crowds of actors, all capital in their parts — the perfection of instrumental music displayed by the grand orchestra, who were all so perfect in time, that it was as if one spirit played the numberless instruments — all this was admirable.
After we had been in the theatre about half an hour, an officer entered the box, bowed very low, and presented the General a paper, containing a few lines, written, as I observed, in an elegant hand. He looked rather grave, and perplexed for a moment as he read the paper; then said— “the king has sent for me to come to him. I must go, but I will return.” I begged him not to return on my account, if it would incommode him; but he said he could not consent to lose all the pleasure of the evening. Before he returned, the first piece was over; and those of the La Fayette family, in the other box, came in the interval, to greet us. Their countenances seemed a little shaded, and I though they were uneasy that he had insisted on sitting so far back. Mrs. S-. then took her place behind my chair, and all appeared determined that he should take the front seat, when he returned. Just as they had completed the arrangement, he came in, but he refused to go forward. Mrs. S-. now refused to take the seat, as did the other ladies also, who were in the box with us. Just then the sweet Mathilde La Fayette came from the other box to speak to her grand father. He told her to take the seat; and though she would not for the world have done an impolite thing by voluntarily taking the precedence of older ladies; yet she did not a moment dispute, what she saw was her grand-father's will.
Thus seated and arranged, we went through another dancing piece. It was the ballet pantomime of Manon Lescaut. The scenery and the dresses, represented the court of Louis XV. The stiff bows and curtsies,-- and hoops and trains, and elbow cuffs, -- the frizzed and powdered heads, and enormous head-dresses -- the silk velvet, gold-trimmed, long-skirted coats, and silver embroidered white satin vests,-- the little boys and girls dressed like their fathers and mothers, and curtsying and bowing as stiffly, -- the dancing of minuets -- slow, and graceful, and formal, --it was all pleasing: and the representation was historically true.
Gen. La Fayette was much amused. “Why,” said he, “this is exactly my time!” “Voila ce petit enfant!” exclaimed Mathilde, as a little boy, a sprig of nobility, in a long embroidered coat, and flapped vest, with his hair queued and powdered, appeared upon the stage. Said the General, “I was dressed just so, when I was of that age !” “Just so.”
That piece went off. But I observed that the eyes of the people, were ever and anon, turning towards our box; —and when at another interval, we rose from our seats, as every body did, suddenly there was a shout, “Vive La Fayette! Vive La Fayette!” It resounded again and again, and was echoed and re - echoed by the vaulted roof. In the enthusiasm of the moment, I exclaimed, “you are discovered - you must advance!” – and I handed him over the seats, unconscious at the moment that I was making myself a part of the spectacle. He advanced, bowed thrice, and again retreated — but the cries continued. Then the people called out “la Parisienne! la Parisienne!” You know it is the celebrated national song of the last revolution.
The curtain rose. Nourrit, an actor who, in the former piece had the principal male part, came forward. He was dressed as a Parisian gentleman. His figure was bold, and he bore in his hand an ample standard, which he elevated, waving the tri-colored flag. He had himself, been one of the heroes of the three days. He sung the song in its true spirit, amidst repeated applauses. When he came to the part where it speaks of La Fayette with his white hairs, the hero of both worlds, the air was rent with a sudden shout. I looked at him, and met his eye. There was precisely the same expression as I marked, when we sung to him in Troy; and again I shared the sublime emotions of his soul, and again they overpowered my own. My lips quivered, and irrepressible tears started to my eyes. When the song was over, the actor came and opened the door of the box, and in his enthusiasm embraced him. “You sung charmingly,” said La Fayette. “Ah General, you were here to hear me!” was the reply.
When we descended to leave the theatre, the thronging multitude reminded me of the time, when crowds for a similar purpose assembled in America. The grand opera house is an immense building. In the lower part is a large room, supported by enormous pillars, and used as a vestibule. To this room the crowd had, descended, and here they had arranged themselves on each side of a space, which they had left open for La Fayette, that they might see, and bless him as he passed. There was that in this silent testimonial of their affection, more touching, than the noisy acclaim of their shouts. There was something too, remarkable in the well defined line which bounded the way left open. A dense crowd beyond- not even an intruding foot, within the space, which gratitude and veneration had marked. I can scarcely describe my own feelings. I was with him, whom from my infancy I had venerated as the best of men; whom for a long period of my life I had never hoped even to see in this world. Now I read with him his noble history, in the melting eyes of his ardent nation. And I saw that he was regarded as he is, the father of France- aye, and of America too. America! my own loved land! It was for her sake I was thus honored, and it was for me to feel her share in the common emotion. My spirit seemed to dilate, and for a moment, self- personified as the genius of my country, I enjoyed to the full his triumph, who is at once her father, and her adopted son.
I do not know about you, but her descriptions have drawn me in, just if I had been there at the opera that day. The interactions of the family, the merry entertainment, La Fayette joking about his age and sharing childhood anecdotes, the want for historical accuracy being a think way back in 1830, the people singing their revolutionary song, the people lining up for La Fayette ...
A short clarification, the revolution mentioned in the text is not “the” French Revolution but “a” French Revolution – the July Revolution to be precise (also referred to as the French Revolution of 1830, the Second French Revolution, Trois Glorieuses or Three Glorious Days.) The Revolution saw the forced abdication of Charles X and the ascent of King Louis Philipe I. La Fayette played an important part during these events and many people of the time were of the opinion that King Louis Philipe more or less owned his crown to La Fayette. The revolution was also the reason why this visit with Emma Willard was the first visit to the opera this year for La Fayette. He thought people would think of him as vain were he to seek out a public place where the people would undoubtedly cheer for him (as they did).
