My partner is an aficionado of La Bête du Gévaudan and asked me to make a print a while ago, so I tried doing a really rough-and-ready, crusty-old-woodcut design based off a few different 18th century illustrations of the beast.

So how old is the idea of wizards and magic-users always telling the truth? Wildbow’s Otherverse books (Pact and Pale) have magic users who cannot lie without being forsworn, losing their magic due to magic itself being a function of having the trust of the spirits when you tell them the world is so. It seems the expectation that wizards are always truthful in Earthsea is a result of its true-name-based magic system, but it’s unclear exactly how. Wildbow novels in general like to build in mechanical justifications for genre tropes, so is the idea that wizards don’t lie an old free-floating idea?
