It's been 15+ years since the last time I watched this movie.
Inspired by a true event; this movie has a supernatural twist, intrigued politics and action all mixed in together.

Brotherhood of the Wolf [Le Pacte des loups] (2001)
Tumblr media
Never bring weird scissor-knives to a martial arts fight.  It’s not gonna end well.  Jazzing up period films with heightened elements is commonplace, from the Valley Girl poppy excesses of Sophia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette to the fantastical elements of Troy.  Christophe Gans, however, leans fully into indulgence with this accounting of La Bête du Gévaudan.  This creature is shrouded in mystery and speculation, something this version exploits to the last, and to great effect.  Even before the beast is mentioned explicitly, this is a world of excess, the camera speed-ramping for both wild martial arts stunts and mundane events like birds in flight.  It travels hazily through brothels and hallucinates with delirious men lying in bed.  If the province is experiencing a collective fever dream with these attacks, the visual language only feeds into that frenzy.  But there is help: naturalist Grégoire and his companion Mani arrive on the scene ready to investigate the beast and end its reign of terror.  They emerge in the rain, mysterious and cool, faces covered in leather collars as they dispatch a group of ruffians.  And Mani is always willing to put his money where his mouth is in terms of putting would-be challengers in their place.  Not even pumpkins are safe.  Taken as a pure action flick, it’s über-stylized fare, clearly influenced by The Matrix, but never derivative of it.  When the film completely derails its plot just so Mani can beat the shit out of a growing mob of challengers, the only problem is that the scene isn’t ten minutes longer.  And the beast, well.  Perhaps it was best to have kept it more in the shadows.  The silhouette is menacing in the moonlight and darkness of a mountain pass, but put it into the lamplight of a country home and… eesh.  The image of the beast and its minder silhouetted against the night sky is effective and its fate manages a touch of poignancy, but in the interc3eding scenes there are some real reminders of the limitations of early 2000s CGI.
But the film isn’t simply a monster hunter flick, or even just an extended episode of Scooby Doo.  The people of Gévaudan are in a frenzy and the ruling class all too eager to exploit the situation for their own personal gain in some form or other.  What emerges is a grand conspiracy of the bourgeois seeking to keep the king in line and serve the Greater Good, or their own personal version of that, a cabal of wolves in sheep’s clothing.  Even from the start the film cheekily telegraphs its final plotting.  Grégoire’s fur-bearing trout cryptid foreshadows the idea that people will create beasts to serve their own purposes, and Jean-François’ run-in with a lion in Africa proves advantageous on many fronts. All I can say is that if Monica Bellucci (immediately clocked for her Italian accent as a giveaway) is some sort of papal assassin, well, you can poison me as much as you like.
THE RULES
SIP
Someone says ‘beast’.
Camera speed ramps.
Wolves howling.
A crucifix appears onscreen.
BIG DRINK

Gross hand stuff.

Gueules noires (Спуск в бездну) (Шахтеры)(Черные лица)
