In a recent pre-print study posted to bioRxiv*, a team of researchers investigated the predictive role of gut microbiome composition during acute Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection in the development of Long Coronavirus Disease (Long COVID) (LC) and its association with clinical variables and symptom clusters.
Background LC affects 10–30% of non-hospitalized individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2, leading to significant morbidity, workforce loss, and an economic impact of $3.7 trillion in the United States (U.S.).
Symptoms span cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, cognitive, and neurological issues, resembling myalgic encephalomyelitis and other post-infectious syndromes. Proposed mechanisms include immune dysregulation, neuroinflammation, viral persistence, and coagulation abnormalities, with emerging evidence implicating the gut microbiome in LC pathogenesis.
Current studies focus on hospitalized patients, limiting generalizability to milder cases. Further research is needed to explore microbiome-driven predictors in outpatient populations, enabling targeted diagnostics and therapies for LC’s heterogeneous and complex presentation.
About the study The study was approved by the Mayo Clinic Institutional Review Board and recruited adults aged 18 years or older who underwent SARS-CoV-2 testing at Mayo Clinic locations in Minnesota, Florida, and Arizona from October 2020 to September 2021. Participants were identified through electronic health record (EHR) reviews filtered by SARS-CoV-2 testing schedules.
Eligible individuals were contacted via email, and informed consent was obtained. Of the 1,061 participants initially recruited, 242 were excluded due to incomplete data, failed sequencing, or other issues. The final cohort included 799 participants (380 SARS-CoV-2-positive and 419 SARS-CoV-2-negative), providing 947 stool samples.
Stool samples were collected at two-time points: weeks 0–2 and weeks 3–5 after testing. Samples were shipped in frozen gel packs via overnight courier and stored at −80°C for downstream analyses. Microbial deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) was extracted using Qiagen kits, and metagenomic sequencing was performed targeting 8 million reads per sample.
Taxonomic profiling was conducted using Kraken2, and functional profiling was performed using the Human Microbiome Project Unified Metabolic Analysis Network (HUMAnN3).
Stool calprotectin levels were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and SARS-CoV-2 ribonucleic acid (RNA) was detected using reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR).
Clinical data, including demographics, comorbidities, medications, and symptom persistence, were extracted from EHRs.
Machine learning models incorporating microbiome and clinical data were utilized to predict LC and to identify symptom clusters, providing valuable insights into the heterogeneity of the condition.
Study results The study analyzed 947 stool samples collected from 799 participants, including 380 SARS-CoV-2-positive individuals and 419 negative controls. Of the SARS-CoV-2-positive group, 80 patients developed LC during a one-year follow-up period.
Participants were categorized into three groups for analysis: LC, non-LC (SARS-CoV-2-positive without LC), and SARS-CoV-2-negative. Baseline characteristics revealed significant differences between these groups. LC participants were predominantly female and had more baseline comorbidities compared to non-LC participants.
The SARS-CoV-2-negative group was older, with higher antibiotic use and vaccination rates. These variables were adjusted for in subsequent analyses.
During acute infection, gut microbiome diversity differed significantly between groups. Alpha diversity was lower in SARS-CoV-2-positive participants (LC and non-LC) than in SARS-CoV-2-negative participants.
Beta diversity analyses revealed distinct microbial compositions among the groups, with LC patients exhibiting unique microbiome profiles during acute infection.
Specific bacterial taxa, including Faecalimonas and Blautia, were enriched in LC patients, while other taxa were predominant in non-LC and negative participants. These findings indicate that gut microbiome composition during acute infection is a potential predictor for LC.
Temporal analysis of gut microbiome changes between the acute and post-acute phases revealed significant individual variability but no cohort-level differences, suggesting that temporal changes do not contribute to LC development.
However, machine learning models demonstrated that microbiome data during acute infection, when combined with clinical variables, predicted LC with high accuracy. Microbial predictors, including species from the Lachnospiraceae family, significantly influenced model performance.
Symptom analysis revealed that LC encompasses heterogeneous clinical presentations. Fatigue was the most prevalent symptom, followed by dyspnea and cough.
Cluster analysis identified four LC subphenotypes based on symptom co-occurrence: gastrointestinal and sensory, musculoskeletal and neuropsychiatric, cardiopulmonary, and fatigue-only.
Each cluster exhibited unique microbial associations, with the gastrointestinal and sensory clusters showing the most pronounced microbial alterations. Notably, taxa such as those from Lachnospiraceae and Erysipelotrichaceae families were significantly enriched in this cluster.
Conclusions To summarize, this study demonstrated that SARS-CoV-2-positive individuals who later developed LC exhibited distinct gut microbiome profiles during acute infection. While prior research has linked the gut microbiome to COVID-19 outcomes, few studies have explored its predictive potential for LC, particularly in outpatient cohorts.
Using machine learning models, including artificial neural networks and logistic regression, this study found that microbiome data alone predicted LC more accurately than clinical variables, such as disease severity, sex, and vaccination status.
Key microbial contributors included species from the Lachnospiraceae family, such as Eubacterium and Agathobacter, and Prevotella spp. These findings highlight the gut microbiome’s potential as a diagnostic tool for identifying LC risk, enabling personalized interventions.

I’m going to my doctor about this in a couple weeks, but I am fairly certain that I have Long Covid and not early rheumatoid arthritis like they’ve thought.
I first got it in October of 2023 and then again in September of 2024. I noticed some health changes after I recovered from the main illness the first time, but I chalked it up to other things. I thought it was possible, yet the symptoms weren’t noticeable enough for me to really discuss it with my doctor or look into the symptoms of Long Covid.
However, since September, I’ve been dealing with noticeable health issues that have been causing my quality of life to decrease.
I initially went to the doctor this past summer because of joint issues in my hands (pain, random loss of grip) and had a blood panel done where they tested for inflammation and RA indicators. My inflammation was very high and there was some RA indication, but it was low. They had me do a further screening and the results were close to the same: high inflammation but the RA indicators weren’t there.
I still ended up getting treated for my joint pain and diagnosed with arthralgia, likely due to very early RA (I do actually have mild osteoarthritis in my hands too).
However, RA doesn’t really seem to encompass what I’ve been dealing with. I began looking into LC more today due to an incident at work.
Here’s what I’ve been experiencing:
Overheating and sweating from even mild physical activity or exertion. This started in 2023, but wasn’t too bad. I could deal with it. Since September, it’s gotten horrible. I used to be able to go on long hikes, move heavy furniture around at work, and other activities without too much sweating or heating up. Recently, I went on a nature walk that’s about 2 miles and was pouring sweat and so hot at the end of it. It was snowing. Today, I pushed a box and same thing - immediately had to remove my fleece and face flushed so red. It’s embarrassing.
Extreme fatigue. This could also be explained by RA, but it’s also extremely common from LC. Again, started a little after first infection, way worse now. Although I do like napping here and there, it’s gotten to the point where I HAVE to a lot of days. Sometimes, I legit just cannot stay awake.
Joint pain. Same as before, started a bit in 2023. Keeps getting worse since second infection. Mostly in my hands, but it’s been in my hips and feet as well.
Weight gain. Now, this hasn’t been as well documented in LC, but I have read a published medical study where they did find that some people affected by LC had basal metabolic changes. I did start to gain some weight back in 2021 after my parents passed, however it seemed to even out and I was about a size 12. I began to really start gaining weight at an unexpected rate after infection one. I will admit that yes, I did consume a decent amount of calories, however I was not eating anymore than I did before and I was very active at this point.
Brain fog. Always kinda dealt with it, but worse now.
These are just the main things I can think of. I know there are definitely overlaps between RA and LC, but after reading more about LC it seems to explain more of what I’m dealing with than RA does.
I hope my doctor takes this seriously. I know there’s no cure as of now, but I want my life back. I want to do the things I used to love without feeling exhausted or embarrassed because I’m sweating and turning red from mild activity.
I’m hoping they can help figure out a plan to make this more manageable. I’m already taking generic Celebrex as needed for my joints, so maybe there’s something else I can add that will help me not overheat as much. Honestly, I’d be thrilled just to have that not be so excessive.

Magnifying deep space through the “carousel lens”
A newly discovered cluster-scale strong gravitational lens, with a rare alignment of seven background lensed galaxies, provides a unique opportunity to study cosmology.
In a rare and extraordinary discovery, researchers have identified a unique configuration of galaxies that form the most exquisitely aligned gravitational lens found to date. The Carousel Lens is a massive cluster-scale gravitational lens system that will enable researchers to delve deeper into the mysteries of the cosmos, including dark matter and dark energy.
“This is an amazingly lucky ‘galactic line-up’ – a chance alignment of multiple galaxies across a line-of-sight spanning most of the observable universe,” said David Schlegel, a co-author of the study and a senior scientist in Berkeley Lab’s Physics Division. "Finding one such alignment is a needle in the haystack. Finding all of these is like eight needles precisely lined up inside that haystack."
The Carousel Lens is an alignment consisting of one foreground galaxy cluster (the ‘lens’) and seven background galaxies spanning immense cosmic distances and seen through the gravitationally distorted space-time around the lens. In the dramatic image below:
The lensing cluster, located 5 billion light years away from Earth, is shown by its four brightest and most massive galaxies (indicated by La, Lb, Lc, and Ld), and these constitute the foreground of the image.
Seven unique galaxies (numbered 1 through 7), appear through the lens. These are located far beyond, at distances from 7.6 to 12 billion light years away from Earth, approaching the limit of the observable universe.
Each galaxy’s repeated appearances (indicated by each number’s letter index, e.g., a through d) show differences in shape that are curved and stretched into multiple “fun house mirror” iterations caused by the warped space-time around the lens.
Of particular interest is the discovery of an Einstein Cross – the largest known to date – shown in galaxy number 4’s multiple appearances (indicated by 4a, 4b, 4c, and 4d). This rare configuration of multiple images around the center of the lens is an indication of the symmetrical distribution of the lens’ mass (dominated by invisible dark matter) and plays a key role in the lens-modeling process.
Light traveling from far-distant space can be magnified and curved as it passes through the gravitationally distorted space-time of nearer galaxies or clusters of galaxies. In rare instances, a configuration of objects aligns nearly perfectly to form a strong gravitational lens. Using an abundance of new data from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) Legacy Imaging Surveys, recent observations from NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope, and the Perlmutter supercomputer at the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC), the research team built on their earlier studies (in May 2020 and Feb 2021) to identify likely strong lens candidates, laying the groundwork for the current discovery.
“Our team has been searching for strong lenses and modeling the most valuable systems,” explains Xiaosheng Huang, a study co-author and member of Berkeley Lab’s Supernova Cosmology Project, and a professor of physics and astronomy at the University of San Francisco. “The Carousel Lens is an incredible alignment of seven galaxies in five groupings that line up nearly perfectly behind the foreground cluster lens. As they appear through the lens, the multiple images of each of the background galaxies form approximately concentric circular patterns around the foreground lens, as in a carousel. It’s an unprecedented discovery, and the computational model generated shows a highly promising prospect for measuring the properties of the cosmos, including those of dark matter and dark energy.”
The study also involved several Berkeley Lab student researchers, including the lead author, William Sheu, an undergraduate student intern with DESI at the beginning of this study, now a PhD student at UCLA and a DESI collaborator.
The Carousel Lens will enable researchers to study dark energy and dark matter in entirely new ways based on the strength of the observational data and its computational model.
“This is an extremely unusual alignment, which by itself will provide a testbed for cosmological studies,” observes Nathalie Palanque-Delabrouille, director of Berkeley Lab’s Physics Division. “It also shows how the imaging done for DESI can be leveraged for other scientific applications,” such as investigating the mysteries of dark matter and the accelerating expansion of the universe, which is driven by dark energy.
IMAGE: Hubble Space Telescope image of the Carousel Lens, taken in two 10-minute exposures, one using an optical filter and another using an infrared filter. The “L” indicators near the center (La, Lb, Lc, and Ld) show the most massive galaxies in the lensing cluster, located 5 billion light years away. Seven unique galaxies (numbered 1 through 7) – located an additional 2.6 to 7 billion light years beyond the lens – appear in multiple, distorted “fun-house mirror” iterations (indicated by each number’s letter index, e.g., a through d), as seen through the lens. How would the characters in YYH react/think if they experienced/witnessed your real world life? Like if Yusuke and them actually met "Tex" and Tom, Nori and Bento AND what flavor dairy queen ice cream would they get?
Replying to more old asks, this one from 2021! Still have 200+ in the ol' inbox... 🫠
Operating under the assumption none of us are too alarmed by any reality-warping in play to make this scenario happen, I think they'd be pretty shocked at how normal I am.
I work an office job (in the anime industry). I live in a small house. My dogs are... normal, I guess? And I'm in a stable, nearly decade-long relationship with someone who loves me. I think they might be a little caught off-guard but how unexciting I am. "Where's the world-ending stakes!?" They aren't here; I'm worried about paying my bills and giving my dogs their heartworm meds on time.
I think they'd tease me about my office, though, especially Yusuke. It's decked out in YYH to the extreme, and his "I'm a shonen manga protagonist!" ego would hit critical mass. He'd also make fun of me in general for liking anime so much, to the point of making it my career. Lots of "wow, you're a goddamn weeb!" accusations I'd never be able to live down!
Kurama might be a bit disillusioned. I'm not out there changing the world on the daily, and I think NQK is fast becoming a more impressive person than I am IRL. It's kind of a necessity of her role in her story, but still. I have no powers or special skills or inside info to make my life super cool over here, and I might not have ended up in as impressive of a situation as he expected.
Kuwabara... well, he and Tom are very similar people, so I think he'd be a bit happy to know the Kuwabaras of the world are one of my "types." He'd also feel comically betrayed that I'm not a cat person in this life (I'm allergic), though of course he'd love my dogs.
Hiei would be... well, probably not too impressed with me, though he'd like my cooking just as he does in LC. We don't have much in common in this life. He might be excited for me to taking him to the riflery range, however. I'm a good shot (though I'm out of practice), and we'd have a fun time after I gave him a safety lecture.
All of them would definitely be shocked at how unathletic I am compared to NQK. I trip over my own feet and NQK can turn flips. Yusuke would probably force me to go to the gym with him a few times!
Now for the important part of the ask: Everyone's DQ flavors!
Kurama: A classic dipped cone. Nothing fancy. Solid choice! Alternatively, he'd get the simple strawberry sundae.
Hiei: Oreo Blizzard with hot fudge. I can see him liking the crunchy cookie bits and the warm/cold contrast.
Yusuke: Reese's Pieces Cookie Dough Blizzard, with M&Ms added. Colorful chaos and sugar crush in a cup.
Kuwabara: Banana split. It sounds like a classic and it is, and I think he'd be curious to try one. Also he has rockabilly hair and I want him to eat one for the pure retro aesthetic of it.

It turns out, I'm still not done venting about the SN's smear document and the grievances with my November posts they used to defend contextualize the fakeclaiming and misgendering posts from the admin about me.
A recent post from Lunastus reminded me of this bullet point.
Tumblr media
This threw me for a loop because this quote isn't even mine.
It was from the Lunastus Collective who coined the term.
Sure, I reblogged it and defended it, but it wasn't my quote and it's so weird to see this attributed to me.
But with this latest round of drama SAS started, I also want to talk about the drama surrounding the word endogenic and its coiner.
Recap for those who missed that ridiculous drama: The LC coined the term in 2014. In 2021, SAS found a 2015 article that loosely associated the word "endogenic" with Freud supporting the fantasy model. SAS specifically claimed that "the term 'endogenic' can be traced all the way back to Freud's work in 1956!"
But on further investigation, every paper prior to that used a similar but different term, endogenous.
In the end, "endogenic system" is a term 100% coined by the Lunastus Collective.
Endogenic was never used to refer to systems before that.
Now, rather than admit they were wrong, SAS and their entitled cronies doubled down and claimed the words were still too similar, then had the gall to demand an apology from the LC for the baseless made-up manufactured drama.
I've seen some argue that their issue was less with the term and more with the response. That they felt their feelings were being dismissed. (And that part, yeah, was mostly me.)
The problem is that not all feelings deserve to be validated. Not everyone who feels they're in the right actually is. Sometimes in life, you're just on the wrong side, and humoring your feelings will do more harm than good.
Personally, I think The Lunastus Collective deserves an apology for the harassment they received over SAS's smear campaign.
Now, coming back to the latest round of manufactured drama today... let me tell you what these experiences have taught me.
These people don't have "morals." They have friends and enemies.
If you're lucky enough to find yourself on the former list, expect them to loyally turn a blind eye to your wrongdoings for as long as they reasonably can. And when they can't, you can depend on them to make a 20-bullet-point list of things your victim did to deserve it. (Much of which will be fabricated, twisted or taken out of context.)
If you're an enemy, expect them to comb over every word you say. Expect them to twist your words and outright lie about you. Anything to justify their hate of you and manipulate others to feel the same.
This is, unfortunately, their modus operandi.
The thing is, I think they overplayed their hand this time.
I don't think people are really buying the whole "wanting anti-endos to be ostracized is literally worse than death threats or suibait" talking point they have going on.
It's comically overdramatic and, frankly, minimizes the real harm of death threats and suibait in favor of a cheap talking point.
Obviously, people who hate me will continue to hate me and the usual suspects are jumping on it hard as always.
But their posts about this aren't generating much engagement, which SAS's usually do. Usually a couple days into one of SAS's smears, I might have lost a few followers that will take me a whole day or two to regain or I'll get a couple hate anons relating to it.
This feels different. Especially if people were buying the severity of the allegations SAS and pals are trying to push. I have no doubt everyone would be rightly enraged if I were sending actual threats of violence.
But I'm not seeing that here.
I hope this means people are waking up to the lies and manipulation tactics they use, and will start thinking critically about SAS's past smears of both myself and other systems. Admittedly, this might be too much to hope for.
Anyway, you can all can go home now.
This one's a bust.
But maybe you'll get me next time. 🤷‍♀️

hellooo its that lc anon from last year again lmao. just curious if youve seen all the new link click news 👀 cause im devastated. anws your arts as pretty as always <3
hello anon i am so sorry to keep u waiting for this long i've been saving this ask for until i finished bridon arc (which was a couple weeks ago)😭 here are my extremely late undiluted thoughts
rlly loved how we got to be immersed in lg's pov this season bc of the constant whiplash from whimsy and fun -> inescapable horrors. those first five minutes rlly got me...ep1 was so fun for me bc we got to see so much ql :D she's soso cool and funny yet underutilized so it was exciting to see her get more screentime! wish we got to see more of her overall but i am holding out for a ql-centric season soon...trust...also going back to the client format from the first season felt super comfy and nice (despite the trauma of it all...lc writers pls make your female characters suffer less....)
also rlly enjoyed the new characters this season! last season was a little tough for me in that we strayed from the main trio quite a bit but i thought xf's addition to their dynamic was super fun! (and i am sure it will stay that way in the future....for sure..) shiguang was so cute (and devastating) in this arc...lg's time and space-transcending downbadness was great to see...and ofc the visuals and music! so good as always it's amazing to see where the series has come since 2021 :0
thank u anon!! :D

Hey Ahmed! Don't worry about the response time, I'd much prefer a delayed thoughtful response than a rushed one, after all! For my first question: The outskirts are known for having all sorts of dangerous creatures, especially since they likely had to be kicked out from the City. More interesting to me, are the Outreaches, where presumably the K Corp singularity / Whatever the Pallid Whale is afraid of resides. Do you have any interest in exploring the monsters of the Outskirts/reaches, or are you more going to stay more city focused (Sweepers and the like)? For my second question, Assuming Angela and crew are even able to restore Carmen, what would they do with her? I know everyone would likely focus on city problems and all that. But we both know the more interesting thing: Resolution and angst, baby! How would Carmen try to resolve issues with Tiphereth, (Also makes me wonder about Ayin... So excited for Epilogue 2!) Ayin, and Angela?
Dear hncdhnmfr,
Hello once more! As always, it's a pleasure to see your asks within my inbox, and once more, I see that you have quite the interesting asks! Although I know you don't mind the delays, allow me to apologise for nevertheless taking so much time to get to your ask, I hope the answer is worth the wait!
For your first question, it's an interesting one. I am quite fascinated by the monsters of the Outreaches/Outskirts and all of the lore implications they have. I think that eventually, PM will explore the Outskirts somehow, as they did mention wanting an Outskirts exploration game in their post-LoR interview (2020 or 2021, I think?), so I believe we will eventually get a glimpse as to what lies there, but as for what I believe lies there, it's difficult to tell. I think that, if K-Corp's singularity is but a child and yet possesses this much strength, it is certainly worrying to say the least to wonder what stronger, more powerful and more unhinged monsters lie there.
While I think it would be fun to explore such a setting, the lack of details makes coming up with anything but short stories a little difficult, and I admit that my favourite parts of LC/LoR are the Sephirahs and the main cast in general. I don't think I'll focus on the Sweepers again for a while, though, so if I do find myself returning to write about an Outskirts/Outreaches setting in the future, I will attempt to explore them a little more thoroughly, even if I don't think I'll be able to do too much due to the lack of information surrounding them. So the short answer is that it'll depend on the setting of the next story I write that takes place in the Outskirts/Outreaches, really.
For your second question, that's a question I've thought about for a long, long time! It would be such a delightfully angsty dynamic that I've thought about it for a while for any potential AiP sequel of sorts (if something of that nature ever comes to fruition), as the characterisation of Carmen within it would be pivotal to the whole story; Carmen, if she manages to overcome her own Distortion, would still have to battle endlessly with her mind's worries and anxieties. After all, we know for a fact that her heart's fragility is what even led her down the dark path of self-harm and what kickstarted the foundation of the Lobotomy Corporation and, by extension, the creation of the Library. And while I don't doubt that she'd have recognised the overarching and painful effects of her hasty decision, whoever said that her sheer guilt would ever leave her? After all, if she felt enough guilt for Enoch's death that she was willing to to end it all, imagine how she'd feel knowing that she either directly or indirectly responsible for countless deaths thanks to the Distortions, the Ensemble, the people she whispered to as the Distortion, etc...
Now, of course, it's true that she likely had no real control over herself at that point in time, but I believe she would still blame herself for the pain she caused back then, and as such, it's very plausible she would enter a depression spiral as she finds herself surrounded by people who care for her and want the best for her now.
People who, in her eyes at least, she failed.
Surrounded by the Librarians again, Ayin, Angela and Tiphy, I think Carmen would go through an experience similar to the one narrated in Kali's page in LoR; she'd have rapid mood switches between laughing, crying, and just standing motionless. While I said that she would recognise that self-harm is never the answer, perhaps, in her bleakest and darkest moments, she feels that it would be best for everyone involved if she were the one to truly fade away forever this time around. I also think that she would almost resemble Hod, in a way, attempting to atone for her sins towards those she knew she hurt most, such as Tiphereth and Angela, and I think it would create an even more complicated dynamic with Tiphy, as both sides would feel as if they hurt the other, and with Carmen's rapid mood shifts, it'd not difficult to imagine a scenario where Carmen is attempting to initiate small talk with Tiphy, having the chat veer into the past's events, and then having Carmen wrap her arms around Tiphy while she fights back tears and apologises endlessly, leaving a confused and scared Tiphy who just returns to hug until Ayin or Angela come over.
Ah, delicious, nutritious angst~
I think Ayin and Angela would act as her caretakers, in a way. They'd be the ones to understand the shifts in attitude she underwent while understanding the trauma she has to face; they'd faced similar ones, after all. They'd try to get her used to normal life again while making sure she'd not faking he recovery just to make them happy as part of the atonement she so desperately craves.
Of course, that's not mentioning the dynamic with Ayin and her finally resolving the endless romantic tension between the two of them, Tiphy and Angela attempting to form a sort of familial cohesive unit with her...there's plenty of entertaining and fun dynamic, but as I always say: All good things come after mountains and mountains of angst~
So, what do you think? I certainly hope this was worth the wait! As always, thank you for your detailed and fun asks, hncdhnmfr, and as always, be well, take care, and see ya'! I hope to see more of your asks soon!

T*LC Refutation (but decidedly NOT Johnlock refutation, because that definitely was a thing.)
Part- 1: Introduction.
[Note: I love and ship johnlock because I saw it for myself in the show when I watched it and was part of the general audience in the past. I even want it to become canon in some Holmes adaption in the future. But T*lc needs to get sucked into obscurity and forgotten. Other fandoms like Good Omens, etc., are following the same rhetoric in their "meta" posts, and that needs to go. This is crucial for our basic critical thinking skills and objectivity.]
Alright, folks. Let's talk about the logical fallacies, and how most of the t*lc metas are flawed to their core.
Not to beat the dead horse here, but I entered the fandom in late 2021 (after having watched BBC Sherlock a year ago). I'd started to ship Johnlock as soon as I entered the fandom (because that's what I saw on the show independently, as part of the general audience in the past, even though it was on a subconscious level at first).
I discovered T*LC in December, watched and read metas about it, became a T*LCer myself (albeit briefly - for like a month or two), and then I grew out of it.
I grew out of T*LC because while the meta posts were seemingly clever, I always thought there was something off with most of them. I didn't have much vocabulary related to critical thinking skills back then (because English is not my first language), so I couldn't put my finger on exactly what was wrong with them.
I reluctantly and falsely assumed they must be right just because I couldn't come up with effective counter-arguments then (what a flawed way of thinking). I just thought that this thing (t*lc) was not my cup of tea (ha!).
I continued to ship Johnlock though. I still do it wholeheartedly. I'm no longer part of the BBC Sherlock fandom, but I do still ship Holmes/Watson enthusiastically in various other Sherlock Holmes adaptations.
In the meantime (i.e., from when I dropped the idea of t*lc like a hot potato to the day I decided to exit this fandom for good), I did a lot of research.
Research related to what the fandom used to be like throughout different eras when the show was still on air (through sources such as old posts on Tumblr/other social media platforms, Sarah Z and hbomberguy's videos on t*lc and the actual show criticism respectively), and also research about how the rhetoric of most conspiracy theorists looks and sounds. I've read about articles on science vs pseudo-science as well (I come from a science background myself, so those articles were helpful as a refresher for me).
I also read a lot about cult psychology and how it can be used effectively to lure anyone in.
T*lc checks all the boxes of flawed ways of thinking, various logical fallacies used to prove or disprove something, pseudoscience, a typical conspiracy theorist's rhetoric, and a cult group's way of thinking in real life.
When I use these terms, I do not throw them around lightly. I've read a lot about this along with my friend, let's call them Kim. For context, Kim also comes from a science background. They ship johnlock too.
I know the comparison of T*lc with a religious cult in real life has been done to death, and same is the case with the comparison of t*lc with any other outlandish conspiracy theory out there. It's just that I've been bottling up my thoughts and feelings on this thing for way too long. I can't do that anymore. Just bear with me if you find something repetitive.
Kim and I read about all these things on the internet, had a lot of long discussions for months altogether, and now I've personally decided to share our conclusions with anyone out there who stumbles upon this post.
This blog is a few days old, and I'm the only person behind this, so I don't have many followers just yet. I'm not even expecting anything from anyone. If you see this post, I just want you to read it with an open mind and act according to your judgement afterwards.
Now that we have the whole context with us, let's begin.
Part- 2 : What's wrong with their actual meta posts?
T*LC (but NOT Johnlock as a whole) refutation master post.
