Author: Sarah Davidson
Description: Former magical anime hero Skyler is doing his best to adjust to a mundane life after having sealed away the Amulets and saved the world. He's going to college, working a crappy retail job, and trying to be "normal." But just as he's starting to move on, a new kind of magic appears, reigniting all the nightmares and anxieties Skyler thought he put behind him.
Along with the magic comes the reappearance of his former magic ally, Levi, who is being mysteriously silent about why he's back in America, and Skyler can't help but wonder if Levi's return and this new magic could be connected.
Finished: September 2023

Any ideas on lgbt (mostly gay stuff) in khajiiti culture?
Canon sources of LGBT khajiit are rare from what I know of, encountered some gay NPCs when I was playing ESO which was never commented upon (this was before the Elsweyr expansion which I haven't played), and years ago, sex jokes from Daggerfall were often brought up as crumbs of representation but I believe they're less lore-y and more fantasy flavor takes on basic jokes. Gender is very important to the notions of what makes LGBT- khajiit culture, judging by the creation myth in Words of Clan Mother Ahnissi as well as by the honorifics they use in their naming conventions, seem to go for a male/female binary. There are no transgender or gender non-conforming khajiit mentioned that I know of, although I cannot name any culturally relevant sexism either, so it's fair to assume it's not much of a thing. Historically, the real life cultures I've read about that strictly see gender as male or female seem to inch for both sides of the same coin approaches, or seeing them as two separate things, and given khajiit motives of duality and seeing outside of it I would assume it's the first. I also believe people outside that strict biological binary have and will always exist, although in video games representation it is not fair to read much into their absence because those people are rarely if ever represented in mainstream media.
This being out of the way, here's the headcanons portion! I'll be referring to khajiit and elsweyri culture interchangeably (a can of worms for another day)
My main idea would be that khajiit are very lax about sex, do not consider it a taboo topic and in their culture, have a lot of freedom around it. Ostracizing someone for homosexual relationships would be considered an attack. The times it could be a big deal would be surrounding situations where someone wants biological children, should it be of their own desire or because of peer pressure, which would be niche situations more depending on individuals than culture as a whole. However, I also believe that in using our modern terms, the social norm would be bisexuality and that someone displaying exclusive preference should it be gay or het might raise a few eyebrows. Given this, I do not believe that the born and raised elsweyri have specific gay subcultures as is the case in our modern world. Same sex marriages would also happen (more in my marriage post).
Regarding transgender people, with the strong binary I mentioned above I think gender non-conformity and transgender identities would be understood closely to our modern world. It'd be easier to understand to a khajiit that someone would transition from male to female and the other way around, but more complex personal expressions of gender would be outsides of the social norm and broadly characterized as "third other" or by less gentle people, as a combination of traits of each, the basic "x soul y body" or whatnot phrases you sometimes hear. This could be both rejected and reclaimed by people! And contrary to gay stuff, it's likely that GNC individuals would group up to find in each other respite from the social norm.
But if you're to ask LBGT questions to a khajiit the most likely answer would be in the lines of "why is this your business?", or adjacent 😺

Book recommendation anon here
Yeah you've hit the nail on the head. But also made me question if I know what I want looool. As things stand, the books I read of whatever genre are overwhelmingly straight and it makes me a little sad. I'm not looking for tropey things and yeah, when I search for lbgt fiction that's not what I want either. I guess i just want to find the books that are about gay relationships in the way that gen books are about straight relationships. I don't even need it to be a b plot! The older I get the more it feels that anything I buy in a highstreet bookshop is set in an au in which lbgt people do not exist. Does that make sense?
I know I can go to lbgt booksellers but I don't know how to avoid books that are centred around being gay. I guess, I feel like the real world has moved past 'gay' being a sticking point and I live my day to day life crossing paths with lbgt people just living their lives and then everything I read that's not fic is just lacking that. I know that is largely because of how new it is for lbgt life to be like this. Published fiction is 99% straight. But I guess I wish there was somewhere I could go to speak to other readers who happen to be lbgt but are readers first and for them to go 'oh I really liked this character, he was just like me or my friend or my partner'. I guess I just want background gays? Or main characters who happen to be gay but that's not the story.
Your books look fun actually! I think I'll check them out.
I'm a complete genre whore which is part of the problem lol. I'm not looking for 'gay scifi' or 'gay romance' I just want some of the books I read to represent the world as I see it. I love mystery books, thrillers, adventure stories, I'll read any kind of fantasy (not a great fan of really long series cause I either lose time and read 7 books in a few weeks or I lose interest half way), I'll read historical works. Ones set in mundane real life, ones set in created worlds. I try and avoid stories that are too scary lol as I get really taken in by them, but I do end up reading quite a few of them anyway. I do love a romance tbh but it has to be done well and I've never been able to figure out exactly what I want from them. A lot of men in het romance books are frankly terrifying, and their love interests wouldn't know a red flag if it hit them in the face. I don't like anything that's too forgiving of its characters i guess? I want them to feel real and part of that is them having the humanity to make mistakes but if I feel like the author doesn't Know they've written a Bad Person tm I get weirded out lol. Nothing better than a misguided character that the author has fully intended to be misguided. I don't need them therapised. I do like an acknowledgement from the author that people aren't good or bad and I like the characters I read to show that. I love a sympathetic bad person. And... this is telling you nothing about what I like to read lol.
I guess the main thing is that I'll read anything as long as it grips me. 'Well written' is very subjective isn't it. I want to be caught up in it, I don't want to be thrown out of the story by dialogue I can't follow or an arc which even the author doesn't seem to be sure of. I don't actually mind overly flowery writing, I love learning new words lol. But really long sentences annoy me (very hypocritical I know. My formal writing is about as convoluted as this). I'm pretty forgiving of most things if I like what I'm reading tbh. I'm not a past tense purist and I'll put up with a inconsistent character if I can see they are supposed to be like that.
I read the seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo recent-ish ly and I liked the f/f relationship in that. I've enjoyed Sarah waters books which are historical lesbian romance, so I'll def go for 'lbgt fiction' I just need other stuff going on. I need an actual story, not just a coffee shop au plunged in to a original story. Honestly if you go for space opera at all, you should read a matter of oaths, it was fab. I was guessing right till the end, did not expect it at all. The only thing I'd change about it is I'd love more tbh. A sequel would be fab. I love things with twists, so I'll read just about any kind of mystery. Anything where the narrative is untangling a story that already happened is fun. I enjoy gillian flynn, David Mitchell, honestly I'll pretty much read anything. I get a lot of my books second hand or from my libraries ebook service (this is pretty limited) so I read a lot of the award winners a few years late, where everyone bought it and now I can get it cheap. That said I've never had any interest in fifty shades or any popular ya books in the years since I've been a young adult lol. I mainly want to read about people around my age. 30s or so if it's more of a mundane life story. If the story takes you outside of every day life then I care less about ages. I've read some great stories with older protagonists.
Hmmmm I guess I don't know enough about what I'm looking for for ppl to recommend actual books which is fair enough as I'm massively picky and that doesn't work with ppl I know Irl either but like... where are you guys going for book reviews??? I'm gonna check out what ppl have mentioned in the notes of that post but yeah i think i need some go to places for reviews. Maybe that's where I should be starting.
--
It's definitely a problem. I'm not big on gay lit myself for similar reasons.
As far as I know, mystery has a longer history of including more queerness, though of course, the farther back you go, the more of it is tragedy.
where are you guys going for book reviews???
Frankly, nowhere.
All sources of queer book reviews I've found have been completely useless to me. Only lists of what exists have been useful, not lists that try to tell me what's "good".
I'll google "gay werewolf FBI" and then judge for myself what's garbage and what's at least up to the level of bad fic I'd read anyway. I've found plenty I've liked well enough to read. I haven't found so much I'd unequivocally rec, especially if someone is looking for high quality prose.
And horror of horrors, a lot of authors I once liked seem to have reacted to pandemic stress by taking all of the conflict out of their books.

I've deleted tiktok off my phone and now mainly use Instagram reels. I get a bunch of content related to Japan (makes sense I'm moving there) but omfg the comments are like the trenches. Some are purely racist to Japanese citizens and others are such Japan dick riders that it's insane.
Anyway recently got a post about a white guy complaining that TOKYO has gotten too "foreign" and that he doesn't want Japan to "lose" their culture. I've got a lot of thoughts on this but nowhere to put them so here they are:
I'm literally losing my mind at how many people think Japan is this orientalist non-westernized country when Japan has westernized itself since the 1890s. Losing my mind at foreigners in Japan complaining that there are more foreigners in Japan and acting like they've been in Japan since before it when they moved there in like 2010.
Saw someone comparing Japan to Hawai'i in how it's losing its culture (truly mindboggling considering what Japan has done to Okinawa) and another guy who's name was literally Noah saying "Americans should keep their bs out of japan no one wants your stupid westernization" like dude ur name is Noah.
Also, no part of America has "westernized" Japan since the early 20th century, and Japan's "westernization" is entirely Japan's own doing for wanting to be in proximity to whiteness. No other culture country or people gets to decide where Japan's culture gets to go, that is solely up to the Japanese people (mind you not the government but the PEOPLE)
Most people obsessed with Japanese culture have never read an actual book on Japan that goes beyond "Japan has shrines that worship the kami or spirits of the world" and "being polite is important as a tourist in Japan". If they did, then they'd know that during the pre-war era and throughout the wartime era, the Japanese government purposefully put out cultural propaganda in order to boost nationalism. They wanted Japan to seem entirely unique and therefore more special than all other Asian countries. This is not to say Japan does not have beautiful cultural traditions that extend centuries, but largely those have been transformed and marketed to Japanese and foreign tourists alike.
Shrines and shrine groups donate and mass support alt-right-wing groups in Japan. The over-politeness culture is part of the awful workplace conditions and suicide rates. Actual Japanese people have spoken to these facts but that does not mean they do not like their home culture. Globalization/modernization will not westernize Japan. Women's rights, LGBT rights, labor rights, and immigrants' rights, will not westernize Japan. They will save Japan.
These Japan-obsessed right-wingers will ignore the hundreds of years of protests and civil rights groups to create an orientalist idea of Japan. None and I mean NONE of those people care about Japan, Japanese culture, or Japanese people, they only care about living out their orientalist fantasies while actual Japanese people living their daily lives are simply background props.
We need to stop pretending Japanese people are not their own people with history, culture, and movements.
Here are just SOME links on Japanese politics not known by most people (please message me if you're interested in these topics or would like more resources):
Nippon Kaigi- Alt Right Religious Group
Japanese Work Culture
Ainu - Indigenous Group of the Lands in the Okhotsk Sea
Ryukuans (Okinawans) - Indigenous Group of the Ryukyu Islands
Scream from the Shadows- A Book on the 60s Feminist Movement in Japan
Chizuko Ueno "Forty Years of Japanese Feminism" - Prominent Japanese Feminist
Burakumin - Lowest "Caste" Group in Japan
Zainichi Koreans - Resident Koreans Who's Families Entered Japan During and After the War
LGBT Rights - LBGT+ Rights Group in Japan
Organizing the Spontaneous - 60s ANPO Movement
Sadly I cannot find the twitter page that often posts modern-day Japanese news that normally is not posted by other news organizations. But if any of you remember it please send me the page so I can add it as I believe it is an important resource. Or just reblog with it!
Look, whether you like or dislike Japan, remember it's a country with people just like anywhere else. Do not dismiss the work activists have done in Japan. Do not say Japan "needs this political movement", instead talk about how Japanese progressive groups need international support and recognition (mind you don't say this about any country, especially largely nonwhite countries!!! you are completely ignoring and rejecting the work millions have put into social change!!! instead talk about those people!!! talk about those movements!!! don't let their efforts be forgotten!!! don't let any government tell you these movements are new!!! THEY AREN'T!!!!). One of the biggest ways we can create change and push away alt-right groups and people from any place is by ruining their image of those places.
Do NOT let the alt-right in Japan convince you Japan is purely homogenous and that Japan is the best country in the world. Do not let the Japanese government erase the Ainu, the Ryukyuan, Immigrants, Zainichi Koreans, LGBTQ+ citizens, women's rights, the Burakumin, the poor, and the communists/progressives of Japan. Do not let ANY country erase that history!
DO NOT LET JAPAN PLAY THE VICTIM TO "WESTERIZATION"

Oh yeah black history month (aka my community victim complex on steroids month) at least some people acknowledge the accomplishments and inventions black Americans did.
June feel like we need to give LBGT too much “validation” also I’m the same guy about the orcs. The black Aragon thing got me and been my question.
Why don’t current fantasy writers make kingdoms inspired by African kingdoms and say they created trade routes with predominantly European inspired kingdoms?
Like it’s not difficult, why I’m getting blackwash characters or black elves in the rings of power did.
These writers are in their lates 20’s and older, in the age of internet where you can easily research these real life kingdoms. Is it because they aren’t interested in these kingdoms and why I get sloppy seconds?
I thought shit could get more diverse for fantasy, but nope everything needs to have LA diversity with in Britain country inspired setting
Why don’t current fantasy writers make kingdoms inspired by African kingdoms and say they created trade routes with predominantly European inspired kingdoms?
Some do. The problem isn't that nobody is writing fantasy based off of African history or culture, the problem is that none of those works are being adapted. Because the goal is literally just to show off a prominent black face, they don't care about anything other than that. They certainly don't care about trying to promote an entirely new black/African fantasy world and potentially launch a brand new, profitable series. It's much easier to take something that's already a proven moneymaker and then blackwash some of the characters. It's cynical and lazy and it shows what these supposed "allies" think not only of the source material they're vandalizing, but the people they're pandering to. They're saying those people aren't worth the time or effort to give them something of quality that can truly be their own. That they're just a box to check off on a list.

“Make a black Atlantis for goodness sake if you want.” Wait that MCU Wakanda lol
Wait Disney Atlantis were brown though, funny enough they are more how the Greeks describe the Atlantians being very different from us vs the pseudo scifi Greek we usually see
Also yeah, Tolkien and other fantasy writers did the ground work, but all these fuckers are so mediocre
Also another thing
Black creators: Why do white people hate us?!
Me: Oh white people don’t hate us, they don’t like media that treats white people the same way homophobic people treats LBGT.
Like a black YouTuber I Watch jlongbone pointed that the magical negeroes might be implying that certain people with anxiety, depression, etc = white tears
Wtf going in black Hollywood? Because such dehumanization I seen in a group that start with K…
Forgive me, but I’m more inclined to protected my white stepfamily who I been estranged to for over a decade (my fault) if a race war protect. That be on the side that lionized welfare queens, deadbeats, and pimps
Like how much fucking hatred you have in your heart towards white people?
Disney did manage to do pretty good with Atlantis ya.
@jlongbone Haven't seen her pop up on here in a while, good to see that the former ILikeChildrenFried has landed
Tumblr media
107K subs, always liked helping promo her videos on here girl made it
w00t
Miss the Vince Vaughn icons tho.
She was a entertaining voice of sanity on here
I'm really hoping I'm reading what you said there right and she's still a voice of sanity, seen people go off the rails in different directions on here so I never know and video titles don't help much.
As for any race war issues, pray it never gets to that, but I also have zero loyalty to anyone based on skin colour alone so it'll get even more confusing for me.
Line up against whichever side it seems like thought that starting a race war was a good idea in the first place, I'd rather not cast my lot with racists.
I kinda went off track there, just a nice flashback when you brought up jlongbone, looks like she's doin ok which I'm glad about.

Diversity in my books
I've been reluctant to make this post, because I feel like my intentions could be easily misconstrued. People might think I'm trying to make myself look a certain way or support some kind of agenda, but no. I've just ALWAYS written diverse books. Simply put, I think there should be all types of characters, for all sorts of people to enjoy. So I feature ALL KINDS of characters -- white, black, abled, disabled, straight, LBGT, pretty, plain, old, young, etc, etc. Writing the same character over and over again just isn't fun to me! (I've also had people personally thank me for Asian and disability representation, which is another reason I'm compiling this list)
So, without further ado, here is a (mostly) comprehensive list of my stories that emphasize diversity (these are major characters and plotlines, btw, not unimportant side plots or characters)
(P.S. - this includes a few books written under my other pen name, Caylen McQueen)
Books with diverse lead characters:
The Darker Ages: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B077HVG9YW (Alfred du Bois is black and I love him and I will take that love to the grave with me!!! He's my guy for life. I'm putting him first because I think he might be my favorite character of all time.)
School for Spirits: A Dead Girl and a Samurai https://www.amazon.com/School-Spirits-Dead-Samurai-Spirit-ebook/dp/B078YNFD4F/ (Taishi is Japanese)
School for Spirits: Rebel Archangel https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07GCXT6WV (Chris Pho is Asian-American)
School for Spirits: Angel of Death https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07K5ZF89N (Luciana is Hispanic)
A Crew of Criminals and Cutthroats: https://www.amazon.com/Crew-Criminals-Cutthroats-Aron-Lewes-ebook/dp/B0BTS5MJLW (Jean-Rene is black... also, I like that Davin is 70+ and kicking ass)
School for Spirits: Almost an Archangel https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07SQW9NN4 (Kaylene is African-American)
The Fourth Dragon: https://www.amazon.com/Fourth-Dragon-Aron-Lewes-ebook/dp/B096QB3MBP (Esmay is black)
An Elven Debutante: https://www.amazon.com/Elven-Debutante-Airships-Dragons-Book-ebook/dp/B0BGJLSMZP/ (Julian is Asian; so is Himiko in book 2)
School for Spirits: Pretty Dead Girl https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09HN5ZYK2 (Vineet is Indian-American... I SUPER love Vineet, he's one of my favorites of all time)
Vixen's Chosen https://www.amazon.com/Vixens-Chosen-Fox-Assassin-Book-ebook/dp/B08ZD63ZXQ/ (Kylin is a kitsune, and it's strongly hinted that she is Japanese)
Angels & Outlaws: https://www.amazon.com/Angels-Outlaws-Aron-Lewes-ebook/dp/B0BDGBK95Y/ (Bo Lightfoot is Native American)
A Family of Wizards: https://www.amazon.com/Wizard-80s-Family-Wizards-Book-ebook/dp/B0B478DMNP/ (the titular magical family is Chinese)
Pride & Prejudice & Airships: https://www.amazon.com/Pride-Prejudice-Airships-Steampunk-Book-ebook/dp/B07G38N7FF/ (Bin Li is Asian)
Whispers of Steam: https://www.amazon.com/Caged-Princess-Whispers-Steam-Book-ebook/dp/B088PF6K36 (leads in this book are a pair of brown-skinned mercenaries, an Asian hero-turned-villain-turned-hero, and a bisexual woman)
Ghost of Redemption: https://www.amazon.com/Ghost-Redemption-School-Spirits-Story-ebook/dp/B096Q9Q5ZY/ (Johnny Wong is biracial)
Little Alien on the Prairie: https://www.amazon.com/Little-Alien-Prairie-First-Contact-ebook/dp/B08PDGS9PC/ (Rain is Native American)
The Wishing Princess: https://www.amazon.com/Wishing-Princess-Magic-Dreams-Book-ebook/dp/B09ZVL578X/ (the MC's eventual love interest, Nils, is a dark-skinned elf)
Palace of Maids: https://www.amazon.com/Palace-Maids-Weird-Portal-Fantasy-ebook/dp/B098TNW5K5 (Dustin is indigenous)
Books with disability representation:
School for Spirits: Rebel Archangel https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07GCXT6WV (Anna uses a wheelchair)
The Darker Ages: https://www.amazon.com/Darker-Ages-Aron-Lewes-ebook/dp/B077HVG9YW/ (Alice has quadriplegia)
Vixen's Challenge: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08ZD26H6H (Sara uses a wheelchair)
A Sheriff's Redemption: https://www.amazon.com/Sheriffs-Redemption-Lady-Robin-Hood-ebook/dp/B0784QFSKX (the Sheriff of Nottingham's younger brother, Kinlay, is disabled)
Cinderella & Dragons: https://www.amazon.com/Cinderella-Dragons-Complete-Aron-Lewes-ebook/dp/B07D3GLSPW (Terra uses crutches)
Books with LBGT+ characters:
My Lady Robin Hood series https://www.amazon.com/Lady-Locksley-Robin-Hood-Book-ebook/dp/B077LJ9G8N/ (there are many diverse characters in this series, but my trans Little John is most prominent, imo)
The Darker Ages: https://www.amazon.com/Darker-Ages-Aron-Lewes-ebook/dp/B077HVG9YW/ (Jalen/Jai is trans)(Jonathan is bisexual and ends up in a relationship with a man)
The Darkest Knight: https://www.amazon.com/Darkest-Knight-Black-Chronicles-Book-ebook/dp/B07HFTSNDD (Daniul is asexual... and autistic, for that matter... he's another one of my all-time favorite characters)
The Barefoot Barmaid: https://www.amazon.com/Barefoot-Barmaid-Belles-Bullets-Book-ebook (there are a ton of diverse characters throughout the series, but there is a gay couple, and Vee is a lesbian)
(I could have more LGBT+ characters, imo, but there are other authors do it better... actually, I'm thinking of one author friend in particular, and if she's reading this... DO write that gay historical, please! I want it!!)
I've probably forgotten some, but I'd say this is a pretty decent (and growing!) list. Also, many of my series starters are free, so they should be easy to get into!
Whoever you are out there, I hope you check out my work! <3

LIFX bulbs - Mine died a few months ago, so I've been putting up with a crappy CFL which makes waking up - even in summer - really difficult and makes me feel disassociated in the evening. I've just got a new LIFX bulb; being slowly woken by a bright white light in the mornings is wonderful.
Sun puddles - Now summer is getting closer, there're more puddles of sunlight in the lounge and the desire to just curl up and sleep in them is way too strong ^.^;
My tiny balcony garden (and adjacent indoor plants). Spurred on by the new desk purchase, I went out and bought some balcony baskets, so now my "garden" consists of: a blueberry bush from last year (B/Day gift from my Mum); an unwanted tomato plant from my Uncle; two flower pots; a strawberry plant; a Bird of Paradise; a cactus, a succulent, and an Amaryllis.
Having short hair - I hate having long hair during the summer, it's hard to handle, makes my face hot and itchy and is just a PITA. So I got it cut recently, and now it's blissfully short again :D
As I don't have a general tag games list, I'm going to tag the last 10 people in my notifs as instructed.
Dear last 10 people in my notifs, please feel free to ignore this if you don't fancy playing.

Get to Know Tag
I got tagged in this by @iparisaltanwing and @lowslore. Thanks guys <3
Rules: tag 9 people you want to get to know/catch up with
Favorite color: Still purple, but am very much enjoying the “it’s just snowed and now the sky is clear again” brilliant-but-somehow-translucent blue
Last song: The Gent and I listened to a lot of classical rock while cooking over the Xmas break, but I cannot recall the last one I heard. Probably something by AC/DC or Led Zeppelin ^.^;
Currently reading: Nothing; I am between worlds right now. However I got given a load of books over Xmas, so I’ll probably start with “Rain: Four Walks in English Weather“ by Melissa Harrison
Last movie at home: Wish Dragon. It’s basically “Aladdin, only the Genie is a Dragon”, but it still gave me a punch to the heart.
Sweet, savory, or spicy: Spicy. I’m having a small craving for something with ginger in it rn (although I’m still all three as and when)
Currently working on: A prompt from the Homestead’s Fall Prompt Week; as yet untitled, it’s a short story turning the concept of good/ evil being light/ dark on its head. Also the first draft of The Ruby Falls, a modern/ fix-it AU of TESIV: Oblivion.
Tagging: @strosmkai-rum @chauceryfairytales @morganwriteblr @warriorbookworm @odysseywritings @spacetimewraithwrites @jaguarthecat @dreamwishing @alias-levi (IDK who’s still active or still wants tag games, so please let me know if you want taken off this list)

So one of my all time favourite fantasy stories is Assassin X Demon King by Brittney Hart (free to read on Substack you guys!! It’s soon becoming a book!)
And the pairing is a human assassin with a deep seated fear and hatred of blood. And his also human (but was briefly the king of the demon country) companion, who is utterly devoted to him and will happily ensure that in his traumatised, dissociated state the (eventual) boyfriend is cleaned off of all blood. The better to not traumatise him further.
Kain (ex-king) will shield Sal’s (ex-assassin) eyes from the consequences of his own actions after he loses controls/reacts out of instinct. Or even if he doesn’t and it’s somebody else’s doing.
Meanwhile Sal will look at Kain’s darkness, see the unloveable within him (or what his man mistakenly believes to be unloveable) - all of the chaos, rage and murderous intent upon the people who’ve wronged him - and love him anyway.
This quote is so them it hurts!!!
Assassin X Demon King everybody! Get your angsty, heartwarming, chronic illness rep, LGBTQIA+ fantasy romance for free right now! (This is a gentle nudge, not an outright order, also this is not for a limited time, this story is free all the time).
I will advocate for this story every time. Because when I tell you this story has changed my life I am not exaggerating; I’ve seen echoes of myself in the characters, it got me through some rough times, it’s given me the confidence to branch out creatively and actually post fanfic again after a long hiatus.
Not only does the lovely author encourage my fics of her work, but she also kindly takes the time to read them and comment. Hello, am I in heaven??!
She is such a fierce sweetheart, and also a diehard believer in the power of fandom - her works deserve so much more love you guys. (She’s got several lbgt+ stories on her Substack, all freee).
Her author handle on ao3 is the same as her tumblr, imma tag her purely so it’s easier for you to find her stuff. (Brittney if you don’t want me to tag you in stuff like this in future, feel free to say and I’ll stop 🫡). @bmgh-writing

Trans Rights Readathon Day 2
I’ve started reading Infinity Alchemist by Kacen Callender, and it’s been really gripping! So far it seems being trans is considered relatively normal in this fantasy world, and the conflicts / injustices are along other axes, such as wealth and class.
I will be matching donations to trans causes (including mutual aid). Here are some in my area:
- Margie’s Hope
- Black Transmen of Ohio
- TransOhio
- LBGT Community Center of Greater Cleveland
DM me if you make a donation and want me to match it!

Heyy it's very random but.. do you have any tips for ppl who wanna forcemasc but can't transition and are in a homophobic environment? I love your posts and id love to live these fantasies one day but gender dysphoria and homophobia sucks and idk what to do about it :(
My best advice would be to find a more open minded environment. I’ve been there so I know how it can feel and I’m so sorry you are going through that. But I don’t know your exact situation but different cities, states, countries are more lbgt friendly than others and I’d recommend finding one. If it is an in home issue then can you move? Find your local queer community? I am currently in the process of moving myself, while I live in a very lbgt friendly city, the areas around my city are not so friendly. Good luck and I hope you can find your happy place.

Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Romance, LBGT
Rating: 3.75 out of 5
Trigger Warning: Death, Grief, Death of parent, Violence, Injury/injury detail, Murder, Vomit, Child abuse, Emotional abuse
Summary:
How much would you risk to save the ones you love? Would you tempt even the most dangerous fate? Briseis has one chance to save her mother, but she'll need to do the impossible: find the last fragment of the deadly Absyrtus Heart. If she is to locate the missing piece, she must turn to the blood relatives she's never known, learn about their secret powers, and take her place in their ancient lineage. Briseis is not the only one who wants the Heart, and her enemies will stop at nothing to fulfill their own ruthless plans. The fates tell of a truly dangerous journey, one that could end in more heartache, more death. Bolstered by the sisterhood of ancient magic, can Briseis harness her power to save the people she loves most?
*Opinions*
After a bit of chaos while buying this book (long story, but apparently sometimes special additions are not the same size as normal hardcover novels) I was finally able to sit down and finish the This Poison Heart duology. I was excited to see where Briseis’s journey would go after the shocking end of the first novel. Now that Greek Myth had come knocking on Briseis’s door in a way that had nothing to do with the naming of individuals in her birth family, she had to get a crash course in the legends as well as continue to learn about her magical powers to save those she loves the most. I loved This Poison Heart, but I feel like this book stumbled in a few places where that one excelled. There was a constant sense of movement and forward motion in the first novel that didn’t carry into the second part of the story. After the aftermath of the events that ended the first novel, there was a bunch of just sitting around all not really getting anywhere. Briseis was purposefully left in the dark or she wasn’t picking up on things that the reader did, so there was a lot of her internal monologue about trying to figure out what was happening. The pacing made it so that it took me a while to get through the first half of the novel and then fly through the second half. The way that Byron reimagined Greek Myth and Legends in this story. There are so many tales of the gods having children and the chaos that causes, why couldn’t there be lines that still exist to this day? While I missed the focus on Briseis’s powers, which I thought were extremely interesting and unique, the dive into the mystery and the connection between the past and present were well done. Byron said in the acknowledgments that this is a story about generational trauma and that is evident in the way that the characters deal with the burden of the Absyrtus Heart. I think it can also be seen in the way that Karter’s family deals with the truth about their family and ancestors. I really enjoy Briseis as a character, as well as Mo, but the rest of the characters didn’t seem to have as much depth as they were given in the first novel. The betrayal that Briseis suffered in the first novel hurt, and her loss hurt, yet in this novel, I really didn’t feel as if there were any serious stakes because it was telegraphed to the reader before it happens. I wanted to like the characters that were introduced to, and some of them I did become fond of, but it wasn’t the same closeness to the characters as in the first novel. I also didn’t really sink into the relationship as I usually do, but that might just be because I am no longer the intended audience for the book. Teenage me would probably have loved this romance. Overall, I enjoyed the end of this story but liked the first book better than this one. Still, a fun duology that I think had an interesting magical ability, a lot of information about poisonous plants that I had never heard of before, and twisted Greek myth in a fun way. 3.75 stars.
