King Tut’s Iconic Death Mask Was Intended for Someone Else
Research from the University of York points to an "overlooked clue" hiding in plain sight.
Tutankhamun’s death mask is one of the most-recognized images around the globe. Measuring 21 inches tall, inlaid with a detailed mosaic of precious stones, and featuring a 5.5 lb golden beard, the artifact is surely one of the world’s most iconic objects. But researchers think that the pharaoh’s ears may be hiding a secret in plain sight.
The death mask was found in 1925 by the Egyptologist Howard Carter during his excavations of Tutankhamun’s tomb which his team rediscovered in 1922 in the Valley of the Kings near the city of Luxor. Carter’s records are kept at the University of Oxford’s Griffith Institute which was established 17 years after Carter first discovered Tutankhamun’s tomb as the center for Egyptology at the university, named after the university’s first Professor of Egyptology, Francis Llewellyn Griffith.
Tutankhamun, known as the “Boy King,” came to the throne aged just nine and ruled Egypt for around nine years between ca. 1332 and 1323 BCE. He was riddled with ailments including scoliosis and a cleft palate, thought to be due to his parents being brother and sister.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But new research out of the University of York suggests that the mask was not originally designed for the young Pharaoh, and was instead intended for a regal female burial—perhaps Tutankhamun’s stepmother Queen Nefertiti who died before Tutankhamun, though no specific date for her death is known. This theory hinges on one key detail of the death mask: Tutankhamun’s pierced ears.
Piercings were typically only found on the death masks of female rulers and children. Lead researcher Professor Joann Fletcher said in a documentary for History Hit in 2022 that “research suggests that the King wouldn’t have worn earrings beyond childhood, so by the age of 20 when he died he would not have been portrayed with pierced ears” calling the pierced ears of the mask a “long-overlooked feature”.
When compared, the gold used on the face of Tutankhamun is entirely different to the gold used on the rest of the mask, suggesting—as Fletcher put it—that Tutankhamun’s face was “effectively grafted on” to the pre-existing mask of a previous—and likely female—ruler.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There is no doubt, however, that the likeness is of King Tut, as the likeness of a death mask was considered imperative should the person’s soul be able to be reunited with their body for judgement by the god of funerary practices and guide to the underworld, Anubis, after their death.
“I was sure the death mask was not specifically designed for King Tut”, Fletcher said.
Fletcher suggests that the originally intended recipient of the mask could be the Pharaoh Nefertiti, who married and ruled alongside Tutankhamun’s father Pharaoh Akhenaten. This theory was first proposed in 2015 by the British Egyptologist Nicholas Reeves. There is scholarly debate about whether Nefertiti ruled as pharaoh on her own for a short time between her husband’s death and Tutankhamun ascending to the throne. Nefertiti’s tomb has never been discovere
The reason for this make-do-and-mend approach to the burial of, at that point, the most powerful and wealthy man in Egypt may be due to the suddenness of his death, aged around 19. Theories on Tutankhamun’s cause of death have included murder, but it is currently believed that he passed away from malaria and an infection the young ruler developed after a serious chariot crash which left him with a broken leg at the time of his burial. The lack of preparation for this death may have led to the decision to alter a pre-existing mask rather than commission a new one from scratch. Other details suggesting that Tutankhamun’s burial was hurried were patches of paint on the walls of his tomb which would have still been wet when the tomb was sealed.
The mask is kept in the Grand Egyptian Museum in Cairo, which re-opened last month after an 11 year delay.

MerMay is HERE!!!
Tumblr media
What would the Neighbors look like as merfolk? Well, after plenty of research (thank you Wiki, many fishing sites, & relatives irl), here's my take on that in alphabetical order.
🐶🐟Barnaby B. Beagle: Atlantic Spiny Dogfish. Okay, okay, this was an automatic choice just because of the name. Although, two venomous spines, can grow up to 4' (4 feet), often seen hunting prey in dog-like packs (hence the dog-like name), tends to feed primarily on crustaceans, jellyfish, squid, &/or schooling fish. Cod, red hake, goosefish, other spiny dogfish, larger sharks, seals, & killer whales all prey on dogfish. Dogfish also have a habit of getting caught in fishing nets due to their size, often resulting in bycatch (n. the unwanted fish and other marine creatures caught during commercial fishing for a different species). Now, clearly, Barnaby will be the same size as in his bio, same colors to as is the case with everyone else here.
✉️🐟Eddie Dear: Common (freshwater) Carp. These guys are all over the place where I go fishing/crabbing, make for good eating, too. What they do is root around soft sediment They usually feed on aquatic plants, worms, zooplankton, & other small animals found in the deposits. Their rooting upsets the water's bed & degrades their habitats by uprooting vegetation and increasing turbidity (cloudiness in the water due to particles). They're native to freshwater lakes & rivers in Eurasia. They were introduced to the United States in the late 1800s as a new sportfish. Now found in 48 U.S. states & most temperate areas around the globe. They typically prefer slow-moving systems with soft muddy/sandy bottoms. Found in most lakes & rivers in Louisiana. They sort of look like massive goldfish that evolved to be tougher for the wild. Somehow, they're often confused with native small/largemouth buffalo [fish]. Generally, they're a sort of golden brown/brassy green color that wanes to a pale yellow/white belly. The silvery variety can be found too, I've just caught the others. Subterminal mouths with two sets of barbels (AKA: "whiskers") off the upper corners of their mouths, large scales. Like most North American fish, they can grow +50 lbs but are more commonly found between 10-20 lbs.
🦋 🐟Frank Frankly: Florida Pompano. The Florida pompano, part of the jack family, is a species of marine fish with a compressed body, short snout & deeply forked tail. Pompano fish often have a color variation of blue, green & yellow on their dorsal areas with silver &/or yellow on their body & fins. I imagine he/they studies butterfly fish instead of actual butterflies. He'll still pop up to the surface to watch actual butterflies flutter around. Most adults of this breed feed on small surf clams, amphipods (I.e. sand-hoppers/beach-fleas, predaceous ghost shrimp, whale ectoparasites Cyamus, etc.), crabs, shrimp & even mussels. If he finds pearls or precious-looking items, he gives them to Eddie or Julie.
🐛🐟Howdy Pillar: Fimbriated Moray Eel. Get it? Because he's got freckles. Huh, huh? Anyways, these eels (aka Gymnothorax fimbriatus/ dark-spotted moray/spot-face moray), are a moray eel of the family Muraenidae, obviously. They're medium-sized moray that can reach a maximum length of 80 centimeters (31 in), though Howdy would be bigger (+8ft, maybe). Its serpentine-shaped body has a white-cream to light brown background color dotted with numerous dark spots which latter vary in size and shape depending on the individual & maturity. It has a tapered snout, is greenish-yellow with black dots, the corners of the mouth are white, & a very boop-worthy snout tip. He does the same things in his OG counterpart's way but with fish-based needs; worms, fallen crates of goods, fish filets from seemingly nonsentient fish, & so on. Wally is far more slippery, so plucking a chosen item is easier in Mer!form than bing bipedal. Howdy is an eel, so hunting isn't much of a challenge for him.
🌈🐠Julie Joyful: The Lybia Tessellata (commonly named "Pom-pom/Cheerleader/Boxer crab") comes from its symbiotic exercise of brandishing a stinging sea anemone (usually Triactis producta) in each of its claws to fend off predators & possibly to stun prey. Its "boxer crab" title comes from its bellicose reaction to threats. Something about this just fits...
🐔🐳Poppy Partridge: There are a lot of fish in the ocean, like birds in a tree. The chicken could be tuna (chicken of the sea), that much I know. Maybe a little parrot fish for color? Grouper for size? I can't find anything for her.
🌟🐠Sally Starlet: I'll be honest here, I was going to automatically pick a default starfish to go here, but then is kept digging. I'm stuck between a Lion Fish & a Manderinfish. Surprise, surprise, I can't pick. Maybe both with a touch of Flame Angel Fish for color?
😘🐟Wally Darling/Home: Yellowhead Jawfish (AKA; Opistognathus aurifrons) these little darlings [pun intended] are usually seen in undersized colonies around sandy &/or rubble-coated areas near reefs. Their lairs, smallish architectural phenomena, are created by excavating holes and lining them with rocks & shells for support - all done with their mouths. Obviously, Darling is half humanoid so he could use his hands here. Still, it's an interesting idea for him to be the one who builds Home. 🤔
These are just my thoughts on what they'd look like fish-wise. I'll need more time to pick & choose what other traits they'll each keep or lose. Feel free to use this as a sort of prompt or muse material 🤗!

Easter arrives early this year, hopping in on the last day of the month this Sunday, March 31st. Let’s hope that the Easter Bunny brings us a respite from the drenching downpours of late and gifts us with a bright, sunshiny day. In cheery anticipation, our market vendors will deck their stalls with an array of edible delights to fill your shopping baskets this weekend. From local ham to pastured lamb to award-winning cheeses, we’ll have it ready and waiting. And, to fully prime your holiday table, here are a few recipes to complement whatever it is you’re dishing up as the main attraction this Sunday. Sautéed Oyster Mushrooms with Garlic & Scallions Oyster mushrooms are prized the world over for their culinary uses and are one of the most commonly cultivated types of mushrooms across the globe. Also known as tree oyster mushrooms, these fungi grow naturally on or near trees in temperate and subtropical forests. Our vendors produce oyster mushrooms indoors in climate-controlled sheds in a substrate usually composed of sawdust or straw.    Oyster mushrooms come in several different varieties and vibrant hues including:
Pearl oyster (Pleurotus ostreatus)
Blue oyster (Pleurotus columbinus)
Golden oyster (Pleurotus citrinopileatus)
Pink oyster (Pleurotus djamor)
Phoenix oyster (Pleurotus pulmonarius)
King oyster (Pleurotus eryngii)
These pretty, shell-shaped fungi possess a mild umami flavor and meaty texture that make them the perfect candidates to whip up in a quick and simple sauté for serving alongside your Easter headliner:
Yields four servings:
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 pound Mushrooms.NYC oyster mushrooms
4 Jersey Farm Produce garlic cloves, minced
4 4E Green Farm scallions, finely chopped
Salt and pepper
Instructions:
Heat olive oil in a large skillet on medium heat until hot but not smoking.
Immediately add mushrooms and garlic, and sauté for 2-3 minutes, regularly stirring with spatula.
After 2-3 minutes of sautéeing, reduce heat a bit and sprinkle mushrooms with a bit of salt, stir to mix.
Cover with the lid and continue to cook the mushrooms for another 5-7 minutes, occasionally stirring, until mushrooms soften and release some juices.
Mushrooms should be cooked for a total of 7-10 minutes. If there is too much liquid in the pan, cook for 1-2 more minutes uncovered, on medium heat, to let extra moisture evaporate.
When mushrooms are ready, add half of chopped scallions to the mix and season with salt and pepper.
Top each serving with remaining chopped scallions.
Potatoes Au Gratin Creamy, cheesy and decadent, potatoes au gratin pair beautifully with robust and hearty Easter main dishes such as leg of lamb or baked Mangalitsa ham from Goode and Local. Thanks to their ability to last so well in cold storage, potatoes are available year-round at our markets so you can gather up Yukon Gold or another variety that will work well in this recipe:
1 lb peeled Jersey Farm Produce white or yellow potatoes
¾ cup milk
¾ cup heavy cream
1 tsp Kosher salt
1 tsp dry mustard
1 tsp pepper and ¼ tsp nutmeg, to taste
1 cup Havarti, Fontina, Swiss, Gruyère, or Gouda cheese
3 tbsp Maplebrook Farm butter, diced
2 tsp smoked paprika
12 oz fresh cheese curd (optional)
Maple Roasted Carrots Down to Earth Markets’ logo is a bright orange carrot so naturally we relish a tasty carrot-based side dish, and so does the Easter Bunny! Carrots remain in peak season through late April but, like potatoes, will store unpeeled in your refrigerator for weeks at a time under the right conditions.
Add a splash of color and sweet appeal to your tablescape with a platter of these scrumptious maple glazed carrots. The easy-to-source ingredient list and simple cooking instructions will take the hassle out of your prep, leaving you more time to sit back and enjoy the feast!
2 ½ lbs Sun Sprout Farm medium carrots, scrubbed and trimmed
4 tbsp Maplebrook Farm butter, cubed
½ tsp black pepper
1 tsp kosher salt
¼ cup Maplebrook Farm maple syrup
2 tbsp 4E Green Farm parsley, minced
To all who celebrate, we wish you a dry, colorful and relaxed Easter weekend and we look forward to seeing you at the market!

Eggplant Lasagna
Tumblr media
HOW TO MAKE EGGPLANT LASAGNA
Ingredients
3 large eggplants (about 3 lbs) 1 teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons olive oil, spray olive oil or ghee ———- 1 tablespoon olive oil one onion, diced 4–8 garlic cloves, rough chopped 6 ounces baby spinach, about 2 extra-large handfuls Salt and pepper to taste ( 1/4 teaspoon each) ——- 16-ounce tub of whole milk ricotta (or sub tofu ricotta) 1 large egg 1/4 cup chopped basil 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg 1/4 teaspoon pepper —— 24-ounce jar marinara sauce, about 3 cups 8 no-boil lasagna noodles (or sub- gluten-free lasagna noodles) Feel free to use regular lasagna noodles that have been cooked to al dente. 1– 1 1/2 cups grated mozzarella (or meltable vegan cheese) 1/4– 1/3 cup pecorino (or parm, but I like pecorino better here) 1/4–1/2 teaspoon chili flakes (optional) 1 large garlic clove 1/4 cup toasted almonds, pinenuts or smoked almonds 1/2 cup packed basil leaves 1 cup packed arugula 1 teaspoon lemon zest 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 1/3–1/2 cup light flavored olive oil (make sure oil is not bitter) 1/4 teaspoon salt (if your almonds are heavily salted, use salt to taste.) 1/4 cracked pepper
STEP 1:
Prep the Eggplant & Preheat the oven to 400F
Slice 3 large globe eggplant, lengthwise, into 1/2 inch thick slices. You can cut them into rounds, but then there are more to manage that way.
>>Get a Free Recipe Ebook 1000 recipes<<
Tumblr media
Sprinkle one side with 1/2 teaspoon salt, turn them over and sprinkle with another 1/2 teaspoon salt – sprinkling as evenly as possible.
Let this sit 15-20 minutes, allowing them to sweat, which removes bitterness, while the oven heats up.
ROAST THE EGGPLANT TO PREVENT WATERY LASAGNA!
Roasting the eggplant ahead prevents the lasagna from becoming watery.  Place the eggplant in the middle of the 400 F oven until deeply golden 30-40 minutes.
Tumblr media
STEP 2: MAKE THE FILLING
While the eggplant is roasting, make the filling. Saute one onion and 4-8 garlic cloves.
Tumblr media
Add a heaping mount of fresh spinach.
Tumblr media
Wilt it and season with salt and pepper.
Tumblr media
Mix up the ricotta with basil, nutmeg, egg and salt and pepper.
Tumblr media
STEP 3: ASSEMBLE THE EGGPLANT LASAGNA
Here I’m using a 25-ounce jar of store-bought marinara sauce.
Tumblr media
Trader Joe’s Organic Marinara is flavorful as well and this brand or Organic “no-sugar-added”  Marinara Sauce made with 100% olive oil and no weird seed oils.
Tumblr media
Spread 3/4 cup of marinara sauce on the bottom of a  greased baking dish.
Add all the filling. It doesn’t look like I added it all here but I went back and added the rest, and forgot to take a picture.
Tumblr media
Add the remaining ricotta- yep it will be on the top this time.  Sprinkle with Mozzarella and Pecorino.
Tumblr media
FYI: I do prefer saltier pecorino here versus tangier parmesan. Up to you.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
STEP 4: BAKE THE EGGPLANT LASAGNA
Cover with parchment and foil (basically don’t let the foil touch the lasagna) and bake covered, until bubbling, then uncover for the last 10-15  minutes until golden and bubbling.
STEP 5: MAKE THE ARUGULA PESTO
Tumblr media
When it is done, it will be slightly puffed, golden and delicious smelling – and you’ll feel especially proud of yourself.

Like, I’m sorry, but the joke that was made about Bohemian Rhapsody in the opening of the Golden Globes was tasteless. Most jokes of the night were fine, but that wasn’t okay.
I can’t remember word for word, but to give context they introduced all the major movies nominated for the night. When it came to Bohemian Rhapsody, the only thing they had to say was that Rami had to wear “Freddie’s teeth.” They went on to make a joke about how difficult that had to be because you’d have to get permission from his family to “exhume the body” (e.g. suggesting Rami literally wore his teeth) and then they alluded to the fact that Freddie was actually cremated so that would be very difficult/impossible.
Maybe I’m overly sensitive about death, and it’s such a small moment in the entire show. However, Freddie’s death isn’t fair game for jokes to me. His death was traumatic to a lot of people. They did not show it in the movie for reasons, but Freddie suffered a lot from his diagnosis to his death. He was suffering from an illness that was largely ignored across the world by world leaders, and it was blamed heavily on “lifestyle choices.” The press hounded him day and night about it and shamed him for his identity and life. etc.
I just fail to find the humor in Freddie’s death or in Freddie being dead, knowing how much pain he was in and how much the press did not respect his privacy during his illness. Their constant harassment of him literally impacted when and where he could get medical treatment. His husband and friends had to watch him die, and their ability to find closure was compromised by drama and the media. Freddie Mercury was treated like garbage while he was sick. It’s just not funny to make light of him being dead.
His death demonstrated how awful the media can be and I don’t think it should be something people casually joke about. Plus, that’s literally the only thing they could say about the movie.

the house episode in which he tells the stories of the 3 leg problems and speaks about his own leg issue is a gold standard of television.
